Cars With the Most Comfortable Front Seats

Consumer Reports drivers of all sizes assess seat comfort and support for cars, SUVs, and trucks over thousands of test miles

Best car, SUV, and truck front seats, including the Honda CR-V.

A comfortable front seat can make all the difference on a long road trip, or even a short one. But it’s difficult in the showroom or on one or two short test drives to truly understand how well you fit—or don’t fit—into those seats.

That’s why Consumer Reports does the testing for you. We drive each car we buy for thousands of miles, conducting multiple tests, including assessing front seat comfort and support.

We have tall, short, and in-between test drivers weigh in on how well a seat provides thigh, torso, and lumbar support, and the position of the head restraint. We also examine hip, lower back, and shoulder support, and whether there’s enough adjustability for fine-tuning.

A good seat will support the body evenly and allow your muscles to relax. If you have to use your own strength to support yourself, then the seat has ergonomic deficiencies, and you might get tired and uncomfortable.

More on cars

Gene Petersen, an engineer who has been evaluating seats at the Auto Test Center for more than 20 years, advises car shoppers to read the CR road-test findings, but also to pay particular attention to how the seats feel to them.

“Seat comfort is very personal,” Petersen says. “Take the time to set up the seat at the dealership, then take the car on a long test drive. And if there will be more than one driver, be sure each gets a chance to fully assess the seat.”

We have identified the best cars, SUVs, and pickup trucks for front seat comfort, based on evaluations by our small, medium, and tall testers. The cars and SUVs are broken into two price categories.

Each standout model is presented with its Overall Score and reliability and owner satisfaction ratings, along with highlights from our road test. Most categories include alternative models that also score high for driver comfort. When there is more than one good choice, they are in rank order based on the front seat comfort score. We also present the worst in the category.
