Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2016 Acura MDX owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"Forward collision warning ("FCW") system is spotty at best. It simply does not seem to sense much of what's happening up ahead"

Anonymous, GA (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The camera is fuzzy. On a scale of 1-10 and ten being the clearest, this one is at 3 and the dealer said they cannot do anything with it since all of the models for this particular year have the same quality of camera."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The backup camera would not work if I signaled before parallel parking, reversed in to space, pulled forward, and then back into reverse. The second time in reverse the screen would be blank. After multiple attempts over a 1.5 yrs a software fix came out"

Stuart K., IL (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The backup camera doesn't not always show when car is in reverse. We also get alerts for the forward sensors and dealer always says they cleared and there is no problem"

Anonymous, NY (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Sometimes the camera does not display a view.....it's just blank"

Anonymous, NY (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Backup camera placement is sub par. It fogs up and distorts when raining. I have seen clearer pictures on a far less expensive vehicle's backup camera (Ford Flex!)"

Anonymous, WA (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"About 5% of the time, the backup camera does not come on and display when you go into reverse. The car does reverse, but the screen is blank. It never happens when I take it to the dealership for service, so they do nothing except say they can't duplicate the problem"

Scott R., CA (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Display screen freezes up

"Slow Electronics. Takes forever to start up after starting the vehicle. Navigation screens lock up as well as display control screen. Acura has the worst and slowest tech in the industry. Replaced computers and problems still persist. Never by an Acura product again"

Randall M., BC (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Display screen goes blank

"hard to replicate, took photos using phone. Unit was replaced"

Anonymous, ON (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"GPS system very difficult to use. Poor design."

Anonymous, MO (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Almost always gives bad directions. Very hard to enter address that you want to go to. Must always enter the street address -- cannot say or enter nearest Target."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Gps is not intuitive. Acura dealer has provided experts to assist in problems but their response has been that the 2016 navigation is new and not very good"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The AcuraLink system would not receive traffic or direction info."

Greg A., ON (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Nav system is SLOW!! Does not even fire up until 30 - 35 seconds after the vehicle starts."

Randall M., BC (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Needs constant updating"

Felix K., ON (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Takes an Embarrassing long time to load. Moving around map slow then jumps. Does not search along route which 2009 TL did. Removed weather Satellite radar which 2009 TL had. Nav system terrible"

Thomas R., TN (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"It impossible for the owner to update the system"

Stone H., MO (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Every time that we change a phone, we must reenter the previous phone from the start. i.e. we have to delete that phone and re-pair."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"I have an iPhone XS plus. Acura is unable to pair properly with apple products and say it is an apple problem! I suggest it is an Acura problem as iPhone is the number one cell phone in North America. Overall, Acura's Tech is terrible and I will never by another."

Anonymous, BC (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The entire infotainment system is SLOW and terrible. Will not accept voice commands and cannot pair my iPhone properly. Acura says it is an Apple problem. I'd never buy an Acura ever again. NO value!"

Randall M., BC (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Iphone and Bluetooth system will not download the contacts"

Mike E., TX (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Had issues with pairing phone to acuralink. Took into dealer and was told would this happens as apple makes updates to iOS and will resolve over time. It did resolve after awhile"

Anonymous, IL (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Phone not always pairing. Garage:"Do you update your iPhone regularly?" Me:"Of course!" Garage:"well, there's your problem!" Do I have to change cars just to talk hands-free?!!! They claim no responsibility"

Anonymous, NC (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Software update fixes

"On three occasions the car has flashed warnings that the ABS and traction control systems are not working and to proceed immediately to a dealer. Each time no cause was found and the system re-set. Dealers cite the need for software updates not yet available.."

Ron C., OR (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Steering wheel controls

"Automatic Engine Stop has quit working and Acura mechanics don't seem to want to address the problem; giving several causes that the owner should check out. Forum information notes that this is a problem on the 2016 MDX for many owners."

Anonymous, AL (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Voice control commands

"The existing system just does not work well for voice commands. Plus, you must pay a feed to maintain AcuraLink. No worth the money at all."

Anonymous, GA (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The voice control rarely recognized my commands such that I gave up on it. Pretty much worthless."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Virtually useless; does not respond correctly"

Felix K., ON (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Does not seem to understand Southern English. My android has no problem"

Thomas R., TN (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Coolers and lines

"Acura recall for a transmission cooler issue"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Gear selector or linkage

"Occasionally the gear selector doesn't respond when I start my car and move the gear selector to reverse to get out of a parking spot"

Anonymous, NY (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Rough shifting

"When the car is in a parking lot going slow, if you touch the accelerator even a little the car jerks. In normal driving it seems to shift slow at low speeds. The car had a firmware update but the problem still exists."

Shapiro I., IL (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"cold starts first 2 shifts rough"

James H., TX (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Rough shifting...not very smooth. Was told the computer needed updating and I had to pay for it (even though it was under warranted) and the problem stayed the same."

John O., IL (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"In a heavy traffic, moving from 15-20 mph to higher to keep up with the traffic, the new replaced transmission still hesitates."

Bharti P., PA (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"I think the way that the car shifts at times is jumpy. Although not always, it does tend to happen more often than not. It also has 3 modes: Comfort, Normal and Sport. Sometimes they work well, other times I felt that it didn't put out the power to go with it's name. It just always felt at times a bit sluggish. When the car starts moving it makes a clickity-clack noise that the dealer was not able to fix even after 3 visits."

Luis M., FL (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"At slowing transmission sometimes shift roughly"

Al B., FL (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Acura has been unable to correct the rough shifting and gear hunting in this transmission. Drove a 2018 MDX loaner and experienced none of these problems. Wish there was some type of class action we could participate in. Local dealer admits similar complaints by other owners."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Delayed shifts at speeds less than 25 mph."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Had software updated but the transmission is still very rough shifting when cold"

Anonymous, SC (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"New 9 speed transmission shifts poorly. Often confused and shifts too much at low speeds. Dealer stated no solution to date"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The transmission lags on acceleration. This can be dangerous when acceleration speed is important like when changing lanes"

Kelly B., CA (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The 9-speed transmission is very unresponsive and sluggish, to the point of being dangerous at times. You have to practically floor the accelerator to merge on the highway. Same with passing cars. The transmission always wants to switch to a numerically higher gear, plus the engine computer turns off cylinders to save gas. This creats a long delay to reach full power and downshift, often on the order of several critical seconds"

Enrique H., IL (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Car jerks (rough shifting) when automatic gear shifting takes place - especially in lower gears. Dealership and Acura corporate customer service representative stated that this is standard in all MDX's"

Shiny J., TX (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The MDX had a newly used dual clutch transmission that shifted very abruptly at slow speeds, held on to a high gear too long on down hill roads, and overall was poorly matched to a family vehicle. The dealer tried to reprogram the transmission with updated software, which barely made a difference with the way the vehicle drives. I would not recommend this vehicle solely based on how poorly the vehicle drives with this transmission"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Sometimes goes into netueal. Trouble finding the correct gear. Sometimes very jerky, especially when the car has first been turned on"

Anonymous, NY (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Computer lags selecting which gear to shift into which is alarming when you are trying to accelerate into traffic"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Rough and/or missing downshifts. Transmission wiring harness replaced by Acura dealer under warranty. So far, problem is resolved"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"This is supposed to be a quality vehicle. At low speeds, however, it shifts very rough-- both up and down. I would advise against purchasing this vehicle. The dealer cannot help"

Anonymous, AL (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Slipping transmission

"Traveling at 30 miles an hour, car suddenly wouldn't go, motor running but car wouldn't respond to throttle. Managed to get off road. Couldn't shift out of drive but car wouldn't go. Warning lights flashing. Finally, turned car off, waited a bit and restarted. Car ran normal"

Ed M., NC (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"This is my fourth new MDX in seven years. Therefore I have experience to compare. My transmission was replaced with a new one. Regardless the new transmission has difficulty finding the right gear. It makes driving unpleasant. I will not buy another MDX"

Anonymous, NY (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Transmission computer

"Transmission has always seemed to shift awkwardly. It had to be rebuilt 2 years ago and more recently they had to do some computer updating. It still is not perfect--we get what feels to be slipping and hard shifting occasionally."

W B., AZ (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The transmission programming is wholly focused on gas savings at the expense of engine performance. Shift points are poorly chosen. The only way to summon any engine power is to fully depress the accelerator which uses up tremendous amounts of gas"

Enrique H., IL (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"After two very cold nights of vehicle setting outside, had several shifting errors and failures until temperature warmed up during the daytime. Took vehicle to dealer for error codes corrections and clearing (re flashed the computer); this resolved the issue, but never had the same cold temps again yet"

Dave W., OH (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Transmission sensor or solenoid

"Wouldn't shift at the appropriate time"

Jim D., IL (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, clutch replacement.

What Owners Say

Transmission rebuild or replacement

"Recall for contamination of transmission fluid with coolant."

George H., WA (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Transmission fluid and coolant mixed causing rebuild. Not certain of exact extent but Acura had it for close to 2 weeks. I had the feeling that I wasn't the first."

W B., AZ (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Car was recalled for faulty transmission & transmiison cooling system. It took months to get it repaired as they. Could not get the parts even though it could breakdown at any time. The service department in Charlotte N.C. did not/ would not follow up with Acura to get the parts. Acura said it wasn’t their problem call the dealer. I was stuck in the middle. This was my third Acura and. LAST. This is not the service I expected and had experienced with my previous Acura’s. Dealer and Acura did not seem to care. Finally I made weekly trips to the dealership and constant calls to service coordinator.. it is fixed now."

Mike L., SC (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The car failed to upshift a couple of times and was shifting up and down excessively at times."

Bruce W., NC (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"slipping gears warranty replaced"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Probably never worked as advertised as the nine gear transmission was very jerky. Finally started having issues changing out of first and had a chirping sound in it. Being replaced as we speak"

Anonymous, TX (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"the transmission was hesitating from about 35 to 40 mph to higher spped"

Bharti P., PA (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"recall issued"

George H., OR (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The transmission went out and needed to be replaced. It was slipping and missing gears."

Flynn A., CA (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"It was replaced about an year ago due to the radiator fluid getting mixed up with Transmission fluid, causing erratic performance"

Bharti P., PA (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Trans made chirp noise between shifts. Honda sent a new converter along with the new trans. Thank goodness."

Anonymous, NC (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Known TSB by Acura on chirp noise when transmission shifting from 3-4 gear. Complete transmission replacement."

Brian G., WI (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"ZF 9 speed replaced at 28,000 miles for a too common problem of radiator fluid mixing with the transmission fluid. There was a recall for the failed part. The transmission shifts became very abrupt and noisy. Now at 48,000 miles it’s exhibiting the same symptoms again. Have an appointment at the dealer next week for a diagnosis. Swing and a miss with Acura. We’ll probably never own another one."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Transmission cooler failed at about 12,000 miles, allowing transmission fluid to circulate in cooling sysgtem and coolant to circulate in transmission, destroying transmission. Dealer warrantied by replacing transmission, heat exchanger (not sure if this is integral with radiator), and cleaning cooling system with detergent. Problem fixed in 3 days and we were given a loaner. This seems to happen somewhat regularly with Acura's and Honda Pilots as there are internet postings of same failure. My"

George U., GA (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"With in the first year of purchase (brand new) at around 9000 miles, car started making sharp squeaking sound and jerk when shifting from 2nd gear to higher gear. After testing, dealership stated the transmission had gone bad - they replaced it. But then they also replaced the radiator and the starter since they were also bad! Even though squeaking has stopped, car still makes slight jerk when gears shift- dealership and corporate customer service stated that it's standard for all MDX's !"

Shiny J., TX (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Started experiencing when driving 45 mph in higher gears. There was a clicking sound when shifting from second to third gear. Dealer couldn't fix it. Dealing gave us 2018 MDX for 2 weeks while they waited for new transmission"

John A., IN (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Transmission cooling line leaked and contaminated cooling system and transmission fluid. Warranty repair replaced transmission and radiator"

Anonymous, SC (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"At the 5K miles mark the transmission needed replacing, very disappointed at this problem with Acura, but it's a ZF sourced unit so I gave the benefit of the doubt"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Radiator cracked and leaked coolant into the transmission fluid. That circulated into the transmission and ruined the transmission. This was covered under warranty. But and Acura, really?? so disappointed"

Anonymous, TX (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Seal failure allowing coolant to leak into transmission fluid. Warranty covered full transmission replacement and cooling system flush"

Priscilla W., CA (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Dealership tech said I needed a new clutch"

Anonymous, MA (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

Anonymous, CA (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The entire transmission was replaced because according to dealer coolant was getting into transmission. This is a known issue and they had experienced it before"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"I have had 2 new transmissions installed. At 25k and 50k miles"

"Loud rattle noise from rear suspension when driving over a bumpy road"

Robert S., NJ (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"$74,000 vehicle and there are persistent squeaks and and rattles that the dealer is unwilling to even give the time of day to. Brought the vehicle in several times and they road test it around the parking lot and tell me they heard no noises. Never buying another Acura"

Randall M., BC (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The suspension has noticeable squeaks which have became noticeable about one month after purchase. Three attempts to fix the issue couldn't get it solved."

Mark H., ON (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"For a vehicle in this price bracket the squeaks and rattles experienced are unacceptable. Acura has cheapened their entire offering and raised their prices. I will never buy another product from them."

Anonymous, BC (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"noises from front end steering mechanisms when turning wheel. Mechanical noises when driving in uneven road conditions. Noisy cabin at highway speeds as well as in city driving. Will NOT BUY this vehicle again."

"MDX began to experience pulsing of brakes during freeway speed stops. Brought the vehicle to the Acura dealer for inspection and issue was repaired under warranty."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Rotors

"Rotors overheat easily and begin to make the wheels chatter when braking. Acura denies there is a problem, BUt there is evidence that this is a known problem with MDX cars, from searching NHTSA records. Acura has refuse t fix, claims all I need to do is turn the rotors. I believe the rotors warp easily with heat because they are not properly engineered."

S P., CA (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"The rotors heated up coming down a mountain and it caused a permanent vibration when braking. I had to replace the rotors."

Flynn A., CA (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)

"Previous to the MDX we owned a Honda Odyssey. The rotors warped, causing significant vibration when brakes were applied. Rotors and pads were replaced at 45,000 miles. The aftermarket replacements lasted till we sold it with 135,000 miles. MDX has the same problem at about the same mileage. No improvement from Honda Cars in 10 years. Both of these were my wife’s grocery getter/kid hauler. She’s not an aggressive driver."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Acura MDX None 3.5-L V6)
Squeaking

"The squeaking or clicking sound normally happens when you are on full stop and when backing. You would hear a clacking or squaking sound and after a visit to the dealership they said that it is normal. Those were not heard when it was newer how can it be normal."

"2016-2018: Noticed car occasionally hesitant like not “getting” into gear but no stalling. Wife driving car and stalls while at a light. Simply restarts car with no issue. February 2019: Wife driving car and stalls but when restarted, all lights in dash are on and car will only move forward at idle speed and throttle completely not responsive (e.g., can press gas pedal to floor with no acceleration). Limped car into TiresPlus at Lake Miriam and they verify that battery/alternator are ok and recommend Acura dealership because they suspect a bigger issue. Regal Acura (2615 Lakeland Hills Blvd Bldg 2, Lakeland, FL 33805, (863) 262-4238)) Visit 1 (March 2019): Matthew in service. Regal Service does full check and reports “nothing wrong.” March 2019: Vehicle continues with hesitancy and stalls. Regal Acura Visit 2 (March 2019): Bring back to Matthew and they repeat check and finding nothing wrong. I insist on fuel line flush which I pay for. April 2019: Vehicle continues with hesitancy and stalls. I then perform Google search on this issue and find out about Acura recall P3W MDX. I call Matthew in Regal Acura service and let him know that there is a recall on this exact issue. Appears Regal Acura completely unaware of this issue. Matthew states we can arrange to bring the vehicle back for the recall resolution. Regal Acura performs software update. Vehicle continues to exhibit hesitancy while driving. April 2019: I then receive letter from Acura Automobile Division outlining the recall: 1. Safety Consequence per recall: “Reduced fuel flow to the engine combined with vehicle operation in high temperature conditions can restrict vehicle acceleration and/or cause an engine stall, which increases risk of crash.” 2. What will Acura do? “The dealer will update the software for the engine control unit…. If the diagnostic scan confirms a previous occurrence of engine stalling, the fuel pump will be replaced for free.” April 2019: I immediately call Regal Acura to inform them of this and arrange to bring vehicle back for fuel pump replacement. I am then informed that recall issue has been adequately addressed and I am not eligible for fuel pump replacement. April 9, 2019: Called American Honda’s Customer Support and Campaign Center (888-234-2138) to open Case # 09483906 to report inability to get this recall resolved by Regal Acura. April 30, 2019: Speak with Service Manager Kyle at Regal Acura about this issue and he recommends we bring vehicle in to do full check and make sure nothing else wrong. May 2, 2019: Drop Acura MDX off at Regal Acura and personally speak with Kyle (Service Manager) and Lead Service Tech about the issues. They inform me that there is a software “back door” that will allow them to see if there has been engine stalls despite car alerts being reset during the prior routine checks. I left message for GM Sonny Glover on his office voicemail to apprise him of the situation and my concerns."
