With its space-age body, super-efficient powertrain and laserlike focus on its urban mission, the i3 pushes the boundaries in automotive design. This tall, narrow, electric city car is the first widely available model to use lightweight carbon fiber for its basic body structure. That single mission focus contributes to making the i3 the most energy-efficient car we'd ever tested up to that point.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

What Owners Say

“VERY peppy compared to my former 2012 Nissan Leaf. But occasionally handles a bit "squirrel-ly" on slow speed cornering, and with high side winds at highway speeds. AMAZING tight turning radius allows one to maneuver easily in parking lots or make very tight U-turns without backing up.”

MATTHEW L., MI (2015 BMW i3)

“Very solid ride and excellent control. Acceleration is surprisingly quick.”

Anonymous, NC (2015 BMW i3)

“The acceleration of the car and the go kart handling surprised me, and brings out my speed demon.”

ANDREW H., CA (2015 BMW i3)

“Typical BMW engineering”

Anonymous, NJ (2015 BMW i3)

“Driving this car has been fun, safe and an all around delight. We love it.”

Anonymous, DE (2015 BMW i3)

“Deceleration is inconsistent, the regenerative braking randomly disables itself due to bumps, curves, etc and gives the sensation of unexpected acceleration.”

Anonymous, OR (2015 BMW i3)

“I've never owned a BMW before but this drives like a dream. The acceleration is much better than an "economy" car with more than enough oomph to get you into (and out of) trouble quickly. The ride is a bit stiff - on the test drive I joked that you could tell the date on a nickel when you rolled over it. On the other hand that somewhat harsh ride gives you a very good feel for the road when you're pushing the car into a corner...”

GEORGE B., CA (2015 BMW i3)

“Good acceleration. Range limitation is a problem.”

Anonymous, CA (2015 BMW i3)

“Great acceleration and maneuverability in traffic”

Anonymous, HI (2015 BMW i3)

“The acceleration is outstanding. Maybe not as fast as a Tesla, but faster than nearly anything else on the road. And the turning radius is exceptional.”

KEVIN B., IL (2015 BMW i3)

“very quick accelation”

Anonymous, CO (2015 BMW i3)

“Amazing vehicle -- very responsive!”

Anonymous, TX (2015 BMW i3)

“Fantastic performance; great acceleration and handling; wonderful adaptive cruise control.”

Anonymous, IL (2015 BMW i3)

“It is a dream car to drive. Great acceleration and handling with fantastic visibility.”

MEHDI M., CA (2015 BMW i3)

“Drive very quietly.....accelerate very good....no more gasoline fumes”

J W., NC (2015 BMW i3)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

NA

What Owners Say

“choppy ride because of short wheelbase”

Anonymous, CO (2015 BMW i3)

“The climate system needs improvement. The car can get hot and there are no air vents in the rear seats, so it would likely get quite uncomfortable in hot weather for rear seat passengers.”

Anonymous, NY (2015 BMW i3)

“The seats are very comfortable. I would prefer to have a power seat option available that would have memory settings for different drivers.”

C N., CA (2015 BMW i3)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

NA

What Owners Say

“All the extras from BMW make ownership rewarding.”

Anonymous, CT (2015 BMW i3)

“Although the i3 was expensive, it is a phenomenal car and more fun to drive than any of the 3-, 5,- 6- or 7-series BMWs I have owned.”

Anonymous, IL (2015 BMW i3)

“Because this is an electric vehicle, I drive by gas stations and wave, laughing. This car does have a Range Extender--a small 1.9 gallon tank for a little gasoline engine that charges the battery if it runs out of juice. I fill that about once every two months.”

KEVIN B., IL (2015 BMW i3)

“The car at this price is lacking a backup camera, which is a feature it needs”

Anonymous, CT (2015 BMW i3)

“I like the car a lot, but I felt the lease price was too high. The dealer has a poor reputation for this India of thing.”

W T., ID (2015 BMW i3)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

NA

What Owners Say

“The exterior is downright ugly - they could have made it look like a more "normal" car. The interior is incredibly beautiful - both the minimalist styling and the information display are incredible.”

GEORGE B., CA (2015 BMW i3)

“Design of side doors isn't good. Cannot open back door until I open the front one. To open front door, I have to release my seatbelt.”

If we don’t have sufficient data, a similar model might be used to form the owner-satisfaction score.
