With this redesign, BMW dialed back the sharp handling and taut ride of previous models, trading some of their sporty feel for a cushier ride that makes it seem, well, less BMW-like. The cabin is now more luxurious, solid, and quiet. Fit and finish are impeccable and it's loaded with an array of up-to-date electronic features.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2014 BMW X5 owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"Water was leaking from the roof and draining to the drivers side floor"

Cindy S., NY (2014 BMW X5 xDrive35i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)
Seals and/or weather-stripping

"The weather stripping around the drivers and passenger side doors is not airtight and makes a constant wind noise"

David K., MA (2014 BMW X5 xDrive50i 4.4-L V8 turbo)

"Driver's door needed rubber weather stripping replaced by dealer due to excessive air leaks and wind noise."

Anonymous, RI (2014 BMW X5 xDrive35i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"Excessive wind noise near left ear, shoulder and arm penetrating the driver's side door seal at speeds between 55 and 70 mph. (This is not mirror-induced wind noise, because it continues even with the side mirror folded in and the noise is not replicated on the front passenger side of the vehicle.)"

Mark M., RI (2014 BMW X5 xDrive35i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)
Squeaks or rattles

"There was a problem with the rear lift gate that was supposedly fixed, but there is still an intermittent rattling that can't be identified"

Anonymous, CA (2014 BMW X5 xDrive35i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"hatch creaks turning out of driveway slightly"

Thomas M., CA (2014 BMW X5 xDrive35i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

What Owners Say

Electronic or air suspension

"Air suspension failure"

"Air springs worn out. Replaced. Car fine after replacement."

Anonymous, NC (2014 BMW X5 xDrive50i 4.4-L V8 turbo)

"The rear air suspension will fail when the vehicle is parked on a hill or slope, causing the vehicle to drop on the bump stops. The air compressor will reinflate the rear air bags after a while, but the issue continues to arise. I will need to take it to a repair shop to get it repaired. I am considering switching out the air suspension with standard springs due to this being a common issue."

Anonymous, OR (2014 BMW X5 xDrive50i 4.4-L V8 turbo)

"The wheels were lower than they were supposed to be and the car "bounced" while driving."

Anonymous, MD (2014 BMW X5 Unsure 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"Real suspension air bag leaks resulting in lowered suspension and loss of shock support until car was parked with key off resulting in air pump slowly restoring air"

Anonymous, TX (2014 BMW X5 sDrive35i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

Anonymous, CA (2014 BMW X5 xDrive35d 3.0-L 6 Cyl diesel)

"Air springs reached the end of their natural life and had to be replaced. When they failed, rear of vehicle dropped and rough roads made it undriveable."

Robert R., NC (2014 BMW X5 xDrive50i 4.4-L V8 turbo)

"both rear air bags for the suspension gave up, leaving the vehicle uneven and extremely bouncy"

Marcial D., MA (2014 BMW X5 xDrive35i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)
Shocks or struts

"I purchased the BMW with 29K miles, after driving it for a few months I noticed that the front end made noise and was not a comfortable riding SUV. I noticed a rotating like noise after driving it for 16 months or so at 38k miles and when I took it to the dealer they said I blew a strut. The vehicle had less than 40k miles on it so after a nightmare at the dealer I had the 1 strut replaced and when I got it back the front end sounded worse so I then started to look for another vehicle. In March of 2020, I traded it in and purchased a Honda Ridgeline RTL-E. It was my first BMW and last. I expressed my dissatisfaction with BMW of North America but they were of no help. A CPO should go through a check of 150 parts. Obviously they did a horrible job inspecting as I only had it for 30 months, I needed brakes, a strut and a cracked air duct which I did not do. There was nothing that great about such an advaced driving machine but my honda will be just fine after 30 months as I have at least 2 of them in the past. BMW gets one star for looking good."

Anonymous, NY (2014 BMW X5 xDrive35i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)
Steering linkage (includes rack and pinion)

"Steering rack replaced"

Robert H., TX (2014 BMW X5 xDrive35i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

Timothy G., CA (2014 BMW X5 sDrive35i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"Known problem with connecting a smartphone via the USB port in the center console. It randomly looses connection. Online forums say there is a problem with insufficient amperage to the USB port in the center console. It's not all the time, but intermittent. Probably 15% of the time it disconnects."

Anonymous, AE (2014 BMW X5 xDrive35d 3.0-L 6 Cyl diesel)

"Low freon. Couldn't find the leak."

Anonymous, (2014 BMW X5 xDrive35d 3.0-L 6 Cyl diesel)

"AC compressor would stop working and fan would not blow any air. It's as if it "froze up." Had it in to BMW dealer twice for repairs. Second time they fixed it due to a directive from BMW for 2014 X 5 cars"

Anonymous, UT (2014 BMW X5 xDrive35i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)
Automatic climate control

"The worst climate control system ever."

Anonymous, CA (2014 BMW X5 xDrive35i Unsure)

"The air-conditioning system is simply inadequate. The automatic choice does not deliver sufficiently cool air. Manual settings don't get the job done either. For a car of this price I expect set it and forget it and BMW does not deliver. The A/C is a CONSTANT disappointment. I am told BMW has known this for several model releases and has chosen to not improve the A/C. VERY bad. I do not want another X5."

Anonymous, TX (2014 BMW X5 xDrive50i 3.0-L 6 Cyl diesel)
Blower (fan) motor

"In preceding comments, I mentioned fan would stop blowing when system froze. If we turned off AC, the fan would blow again. Then we could "thaw" it out. Sometimes temp would reach 85 in the car. It is now fixed and works very well"

Anonymous, FL (2014 BMW X5 sDrive35i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

Jesse C., MN (2014 BMW X5 xDrive35d 3.0-L 6 Cyl diesel)

"Check engine light. No drivability issues. Took 3 total visits to dealer and over 2 months for parts before problem was resolved. Resolution completely satisfactory. Loaner car provided for all dealer visits"

Anonymous, PA (2014 BMW X5 xDrive35d 3.0-L 6 Cyl diesel)

Oil leaks

"The engine is burning oil and consumes excess oil in between frequent expensive oil changes. On 2 recent road trips, the car indicated that the oil level was low, and 2 quarts of oil needed to be added immediately. Due to this issue, I now must carry extra oil in the trunk at all times."

Anonymous, OR (2014 BMW X5 xDrive50i 4.4-L V8 turbo)

"Oil Filter Housing Gasket Leaking Engine Oil. Covered by extended warranty; would have cost nearly $800 without extended warranty. Internet research indicates this is common problem for years and service adviser said similar thing. Ridiculous that BMW hasn't corrected it."

Anonymous, MD (2014 BMW X5 xDrive35i 3.0-L 6 Cyl turbo)

"The keyless locking system does not work correctly. I'll have the key in my pocket but it won't open a passanger or rear door, or something the hatch. Very, very annoying!"

David K., MA (2014 BMW X5 xDrive50i 4.4-L V8 turbo)

"Rear driver side passenger door. Called dealer at 9am. They said bring car in at 10:15 AM. The repair (defective actuator was replaced) and complete diagnosis was finished at 11:30 AM. The dealer also washed the car. There was no charge to me"

George W., NJ (2014 BMW X5 xDrive35d 3.0-L 6 Cyl diesel)

"Front driver's door and both rear passenger doors opened suddenly when myself or a rear passenger leaned on the door. BMW denied there was a problems but replaced all the locks and latches on all four doors. The problem stopped after that. Someone co"

Steve S., CA (2014 BMW X5)

Exhaust

Muffler, pipes, catalytic converter, exhaust manifold, leaks.

What Owners Say

"The exhaust system has a recall under way, altho very slowly. The issue is the engine can smoke badly and possibly catch on fire. We need to drive 2200 miles across the country to our summer home and BMW is dragging their feet on fixing the problem. Thus, we are at risk of being stranded for a lengthy time along our 2200 mile trek with a car loaded with luggage and other items. Incredibly bad customer service. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
Oct 25, 2018
The melting intake manifold can increase the risk of a fire.
Summary:
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2013-2018 BMW 328d and 328d xDrive, 2014-2018 328d Sports Wagon and 328d xDrive Sports Wagon, 2014-2016 535d and 535d xDrive, 2015 740Ld xDrive, 2015-2017 X3 xDrive28d SAV and 2014-2017 X5 xDrive35d SAV vehicles equipped with an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) module with an integrated cooler. If the EGR cooler leaks internally, the coolant can mix with diesel engine soot. The high EGR temperatures may result in these particles possibly smoldering and melting the intake manifold.
What should you do:
BMW will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and replace the EGR cooler as necessary. If a leak has already occurred, the engine intake manifold will also be replaced. These repairs will be made free of charge. The recall began May 13, 2019. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.
For more information:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
