With the X5's redesign, BMW has dialed back the sharp handling and taut ride of previous models, trading some of their sporty feel for a cushier ride that makes it seem, well, less BMW-like. The cabin is now more luxurious, solid, and quiet. Fit and finish are impeccable, and it's loaded with an array of up-to-date electronic features.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

"It accelerates strongly, stops quickly, and corners like a sports car. If you want an SUV that will bring out the Walter Mitty in you, this is your vehicle!"

JOHN S., FL (2016 BMW X5)

"This is a plug-in hybrid with a 4-cylinder engine. I did not expect that the acceleration and handling of the vehicle would be a great as it is. I have also driven the 6-cylinder version of the car and this has better performance and very good gas mileage."

W C., IL (2016 BMW X5)

"Not enough resistance in the steering."

Anonymous, SC (2016 BMW X5)

"Handling is a little rough, especially when starting from a full stop. The powerful V8 engines launches too suddenly."

David R., MN (2016 BMW X5)

"Very smooth read ride handles curves very well, fast acceleration When having to change lanes I feel very confident with this car"

Anonymous, SC (2016 BMW X5)

"Love this car! Have the plug in electric hybrid model. Great fuel economy! And wonderful handling!"

Anonymous, WI (2016 BMW X5)

"This monster goes 0-60 in under 4 seconds. It's such a pleasure to drive! Step on the gas to enter the freeway, and you're in triple digit mph before you realize it."

Edward K., TX (2016 BMW X5)

"Very agile"

Anonymous, NJ (2016 BMW X5)

"Response to acceleration and braking. Cornering at any speed."

Anonymous, AR (2016 BMW X5)

Anonymous, NJ (2016 BMW X5)

"Love the ride. Firm and comfortable at the same time. Sporty when you want it to be."

Patrick S., OH (2016 BMW X5)

"The diesel engine provides exceptional acceleration and torque while providing superb fuel mileage. Sticker quotes 30 mpg highway but I think we get at least 32 mpg. Averaging 28 mpg around town. Love the handling, ride, power, acceleration and mileage we are getting"

Anonymous, VA (2016 BMW X5)

"Frequently goes out of alignment causing the vehicle to wander in the lane on the highway. In mountain driving with rough roads, it can be unsettling. After an alignment it tracks well, but that might only last 1-2 months."

Anonymous, CA (2016 BMW X5)

"Steering feel and control excellent. Feels very safe."

Anonymous, GA (2016 BMW X5)

"OK - I did this on the last question. Handling is great in all conditions. Acceleration is there if needed, but I don't use or need it anymore. Maybe when I was 16 I would have answers differently. For now, I want more comfort and reliability. The X5 gives it to me."

Richard M., NH (2016 BMW X5)

"with the sport's chassis, an expensive extra, and on sport setting it handles very well"

Felix W., BC (2016 BMW X5)

"V8 is extremely powerful (only issue is getting up to speed almost too fast-have to look down to realize how fast you are going); by far the best handling SUV I have ever driven"

Anonymous, WA (2016 BMW X5)

"There's seriously NO NEED for more power, never been caught wanting for more."

Adam H., MA (2016 BMW X5)

"hybrid battery provides a huge amount of torque at takeoff sticks to the road"

Troy B., OH (2016 BMW X5)

"This is a driver's car. The suspension can be a little harsh and the fun-flat tires do not help. Acceleration can be brisk."

Robert B., SC (2016 BMW X5)

"for a 3.5 liter engine has plenty of pick up and horsepower. Best handling SUV out there."

Anonymous, MD (2016 BMW X5)

"Love the hybrid engine. I usually get around 1600 mile to a tank of gas. I plug in at home and at work. That being said, the electric engine and the combustion engine are very responsive. The car handles great, cornering is crisp and the ride is smooth."

Anonymous, WA (2016 BMW X5)

"This is an electric hybrid. Amazing power when needed and great MPG. It handles and drives like a BMW."

Robert J., PA (2016 BMW X5)

"Terrific handling. Good acceleration when needed."

Anonymous, NY (2016 BMW X5)

"Ample power, smooth acceleration, and meaningful driving modes that change the handling and ride characteristics in a notable way."

Robert J., NY (2016 BMW X5)

"Steering is all over the road"

Stephen F., MA (2016 BMW X5)

"Excellent handling - BUT TIRES are ridiculously expensive and do not last long. Need this handling with great tires at a reasonable price. Will never buy another vehicle that has run flat tires. They will be a deal breaker."

Anonymous, BC (2016 BMW X5)

"Power and torque at low rpms. For a large vehicle the handling is great."

John C., GA (2016 BMW X5)

"Great acceleration for short on ramps and great handling in the winter."

Anonymous, BC (2016 BMW X5)

"Thumbs up!"

Anonymous, MD (2016 BMW X5)

"Such acomfortable car todrive and be a passenger in. Great for lobg trips. Only complaints: I have to put it in Sport mode every time I start the car. Wish it would stay locked in tgat mode. Would like bigger nav screen."

Anonymous, CA (2016 BMW X5)

"Extremely comfortable on long trips, almost infinitely adjustable"

JOHN S., FL (2016 BMW X5)

"Having owned a succession of X5's in the past (6), the 2016 and 2015 are the most comfortable that BMW has ever produced. The ride is so much smoother without the old jarring ride of previous models."

CRAIG B., TX (2016 BMW X5)

"AC auto thermostat is not working properly, need to turn it to 64 to make the car 70 degrees. Will take it in at next oil change for warranty service"

JIM A., CA (2016 BMW X5)

"My only complaint is that the air conditioner isn't strong enough to handle the Texas heat. I have had the windows tinted and I always use a front shade, but it still takes the car longer then it should to cool down when the temperature is over 95f."

DON R., TX (2016 BMW X5)

"I have sciatica and these seats allow me to drive for a longer period than any others I have found. Very comfortable."

DAN J., VA (2016 BMW X5)

"The X5 is exceptionally comfortable and I love the cooling in the seats as well as the cabin. I can adjust the seats in many directions plus I can adjust the lumbar support. Worth every penny."

KAREN H., VA (2016 BMW X5)

"Seats are extremely hard and firm, particularly on any distance exceeding 60 minutes. An extra cushion was often required for additional comfort."

Anonymous, ON (2016 BMW X5)

"Always comfortable, very secure on the road and amazingly quiet even at higher speeds. Somewhat stiff ride on sports setting (fully expected) but that setting produces near sports car handling in an SUV"

Anonymous, WA (2016 BMW X5)

"Wide, comfortable seats. Smooth but sporty ride."

Anonymous, GA (2016 BMW X5)

"I am tall with long legs. I like the thigh support from the sport seats, headroom and legroom."

Anonymous, VA (2016 BMW X5)

"Quiet, comfortable, yet firm ride with great feedback without being harsh."

Patrick S., OH (2016 BMW X5)

"Very comfortable for both my 5 foot 2 inch 130 lb wife and my 6 foot 260 lb."

Anonymous, NM (2016 BMW X5)

"very quiet when all windows up; short ride or long ride (even over 250 miles) the seats are comfortable and have many position options (I got an upgrade seat package) again, whether short or long ride it handles and responds well. Acceleration is not a big factor for me. It's there, but I don't feel any need for it - like I did when I was 16!"

Richard M., NH (2016 BMW X5)

"Seats are the very comfortable. Very adjustable to fit to our body. Ride is firm, but luxurious. Noise level is low in both front and rear seats. Visibility is great in all directions."

Anonymous, SC (2016 BMW X5)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Driver safety aids such as back up camera, lane departure, etc. are all add ons. At the price point for this vehicle most of these should be standard equipment."

Anonymous, IN (2016 BMW X5)

"They are expensive!"

LEN-MARY H., WI (2016 BMW X5)

"Paid $67K for this car and a year later this car appraised at $42K, and another year later appraised at $33K. Horrible depreciation. The electronics on this vehicle are unreliable. Sometimes my phone will sync with the car and sometimes it won't. We've had the dash pulled out at the BMW service dept to closely look at the electronics, and no resolve was found to understand why the electronics sometimes work and other times it doesn't. Very frustrating. Getting rid of this car."

Anonymous, TX (2016 BMW X5)

"Not worth the money"

Stephen F., MA (2016 BMW X5)

"You get what you pay for."

Anonymous, NJ (2016 BMW X5)

"I got my car at the end of the model year, when they wanted to clear the lot for newer cars. It's a fully loaded X5, and I especially like the heads up display. The steering wheel blocks sight of the speedometer, so it's a feature I now rely on. Runs & accelerates great!"

Anonymous, CA (2016 BMW X5)

"The fit and finish is remarkable and the interior exceptionally welcoming for driver and passengers alike. Everyone's seat adjusts (if you option the rear comfort seats) and there's plenty of customization with rear ventilation. The exhaust note on the M package is wonderful and acceleration brisk. This is a lot of vehicle for the money."

Adam H., MA (2016 BMW X5)

"Overpriced, overhyped, not worth it. Rear seat belt failed after 6 months of use. Features are not unique and are available on most every other competitor's model, at any price point."

William H., GA (2016 BMW X5)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"The styling just appeals to me. Love the headlights."

ERIC E., MI (2016 BMW X5)

"I wish they had not restyled to look like every other competitor - my 2005 X5 had a very specific size and shape that was unique to BMW, now it looks like every other car in the parking lot."

Anonymous, CA (2016 BMW X5)
