Until the 2001 redesign arrives, don't spend the premium this outdated model demands--especially when the more sophisticated and less expensive GMC Yukon and Chevy Tahoe are available. The 2000 is merely a rebadged previous-generation Tahoe. Virtues include a smooth-shifting transmission and selectable full-time four-wheel drive. But, based on our experience with the last Tahoe we tested, expect sloppy handling, abysmal fuel economy, and awful brakes. For the 2001 model year, the Escalade will get the newer truck chassis and powertrains currently on the Tahoe and Yukon.
