The world needs more small trucks. They’re easier to park and maneuver and cost less to feed than full-sized behemoths, like the Chevrolet Silverado, Ford F-150, and Ram 1500. But then the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon twins came along with the first modern compact truck redesign in 11 years. GM had Rocky Mountain high hopes for this truck, and sales have been strong.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

"lack in power with the 4 cylinder"

ERNEST K., NY (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Transmission does not down shift properly. Will actually lug the engine a slow speeds."

Anonymous, GA (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Drives like a new car rather than a truck."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Handling is fine, minor hesitation upon accelerating depending on the speed ."

RONALD M., VA (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"For some strange reason the acceleration is limited to 98mph, this may be some nannie's idea of safety but the whole acceleration system is being limited. In ex. when taking off from a stop in traffic the car hesitates when trying to increase speed to keep up with traffic it seems as though no matter how much pressure one places on the accelerator it just putts along, falling behind, until I really push hard to give it a burst of power. Also when giving the vehicle a burst of power it sounds a"

DAVID M., NV (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Acceleration is barely adequate. I realize that this is a diesel truck and not a sports car, but 20 more horsepower would be welcome."

JACK P., TX (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"It drives like a car, not a 4wd truck."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Transmission sometimes hesitates to shift down when accelerating. Minor annoyance."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"This truck is very quiet inside and the V6 is very strong and quick. Overall the truck handles great."

R P., KS (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Has enough power and good turning radius"

Anonymous, CT (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Handles well and has a solid feel, however the programming in the engine/transmission sometimes does not allow you to accelerate properly. It will sometimes bog down rather than downshifting, especially after turning a corner and trying to accelerate. At other times it behaves properly."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Ride comfort"

Anonymous, NY (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"easy to drive. smooth. parks easily. comfortable puling into traffic."

Anonymous, MA (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"acceleration and handling and especially comfort are outstanding!"

TOM K., CO (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"It drives with easy handling."

Anonymous, MD (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"The only thing that frustrates me about this truck is the acceleration, very slow to move from stop, even though it's a compact truck it should have a stronger engine."

JOSE L., FL (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"It is a truck and its handling on corners at speed is poor, acceleration is good, power is good"

Dominic C., MO (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Handling and acceleration is adequate."

Anonymous, ME (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Highly maneuverable with adequate engine power. Verfy good in thick city traffic and equally as good off road keeping in mind this is avwirk truck not a jeep"

Joseph T., NY (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Acceleration and maintaining speeds is poor. The transmission doesn't know when to shift to accelerate gradually and when it finally does, it shifts down 2 gears, revs and takes off fast. In a fairly wide range of situations when you want to pick up speed a little bit and depress the accelerator gradually, it hesitates and feels like it bogging down then the transmission drops 2 gears and ti takes off very fast. I have had this checked out by 2 different chevy dealerships and both said there is nothing wrong with it and the transmission is trying to figure out what you want it to do. Apparently pressing the accelerator slightly doesn't interpret into "speed up slightly" in Chevy's world. This is the only vehicle with which I've ever had this problem including 2 other Chevy full sized trucks. And there are a variety of other minor issues with fit and finish."

Anonymous, MN (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"outstanding acceleration and pick for a 4 cylinder engine, no problem at all pulling into hiway speed traffic, and the handling is pretty much same as any sedan or SUV, very responsive"

Anonymous, NC (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Smooth and powerful. Unfortunate lag in high speed down shift!"

Anonymous, CT (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"It is less responsive than other vehicles we have owned but does get up and go when needed."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Has good pickup for a 4 cyl engine. Engine and transmission are well matched for the kind of driving I do with this truck"

Anonymous, KS (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Good looking truck."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Great handling and pick up for a large pick up truck."

James S., PA (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Like the way it shifts smoothly and grips the road in all kinds of weather."

Dorisann M., TN (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Sometimes transmission reluctant to downshift when trying to accelerate."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Mileage, 28 city/highway combined and I've gotten 32 MPG on a trip before. Amazing for 3/4 size truck."

Anonymous, OH (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Smooth ride, good steering, but noisy. Sometimes acceleration is a little sluggish. Shifting feels delayed sometimes."

Anonymous, MO (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"The truck definitely had some power. There are still issues with the transmission getting seemingly "confused" as to what great to enter when accelerating. For example, when using the u-turn lane under an overpass. In the situation where you're just about to enter traffic again and you're rolling slowly waiting for your opening. If you have the weekend turned far and you press the gas hard to accelerate quickly from a slow roll, the truck will pause for almost a full second before finally selecting a gear. I've started to put the truck in first gear when I'm in heavy traffic situations so that it will accelerate exactly when and how much I need. Another thing is when going downhill such as driving through a mountain valley, the transmission will "clunk" when downshifting. I feel it prominently on my foot that is on the brake but my fiance said she couldn't really feel it from the passenger seat. I definitely notice it while driving."

Anonymous, AZ (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"the V6 Is as powerful in this truck as the 5.3 V8 in the silverado"

Anonymous, MS (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Outstanding handling, acceleration for a small truck."

Anonymous, NH (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"just the fuel mileage"

Stan C., OH (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Does not shift gears well in city traffic. I often turn on the tow package feature to overcome this even though I am not towing anything,."

Anonymous, MI (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"It is the only vehicle that I thoroughly enjoy driving. It rides and handles like a sports car but it sounds like a truck and rides high. The smaller steering wheel and comfortable bucket seats makes driving fun."

Benny L., TX (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"When taking off from a stop the system does not accelerate a quick as it should, it starts off well enough but then it acts like it bogs down. (think driving in large puddle or soft sand) Ditto when trying to pass another vehicle. (Pass a 18 wheeler and you are moving ok and it bogs down before accelerating more. and the vehicle behind you is rapidly eating up the safety margin.) It is very irritating that the car tops out at 98 mph with a blurb on your dashboard that require you to remove your eyes from the road to answer!!!"

David M., NV (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Quiet"

Steven S., CA (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Handles well and has plenty of acceleration."

Reed B., OH (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"It’s got to be the combination of power and mileage, that’s both very good for a 4,500 lbs truck, that can tow it’s own weight effortlessly. While being comfortable with a great degree of control and handling, braking and getupandgo! With an exciting amount of off road adventure and capabilities. All for a great price with style."

Kevin V., MA (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"When accelerating it takes it a while to get through the gears and catch up. Very slow and if you need immediate acceleration it can be dangerous (such as merging)."

Anonymous, WI (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"When accelerating from a constant 20-25 mph the transmission stays in a higher gear and the engine bogs down momentarily."

Kim H., CO (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"The truck handles very good on highway and what little I have taken it on forest roads. I have the V6 amid it has plenty of power to pass when I need it. Just starting to tow a travel trailer and not sure if it will n handle the trailer we bought. It is in the weight specifications, but need to take za few more t trips to be comfortable with handling. Overall, I love this truck."

Anonymous, OR (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Great handling in a variety of conditions, and responsive acceleration"

Anonymous, IL (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"While not towing everything is great, the engine needs more power for towing at highway speeds."

Justin M., MI (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"When I step on the gas petal there is a pause of 2 to 3 seconds before acceleration starts.Dealer tells me it's normal. I think it could be dangerous when trying to pass another car on a two LANE highway."

Anonymous, ID (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Transmission shifts into higher gears too quickly then will not downshift until radical acceleration is required. merging into traffic or passing situations are very stressful. Rides like a buckboard and the seats are hard as rocks and very narrow. power sets do not have enough adjustment."

John S., CO (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"It accelerates relatively well, but most Chevys seem to need to have the gas pedal pushed down pretty forcefully to get going."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Handling is pretty typical of trucks I've driven. Acceleration is surprisingly fast for a 4-cylinder engine and it doesn't labor at all to maintain expressway speeds."

K L., OH (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Lots of power and very good feed back through the steering with a good feel of the road."

Anonymous, ND (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Responsive steering."

Anonymous, LA (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"The engine bogs down when trying to accelerate."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"In comparison to the V8 Chevrolet Silverado I previously owned, this 6 cylinder Colorado strains to keep consistently at the speed limit on my mountain roads. Without a many geared transmission, it has to "leap" to shift down to a lower gear to remain at speed."

Anonymous, CO (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"great acceleration and speed"

Anonymous, WA (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

RONALD M., VA (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"The cab is very quiet and comfortable. The ride I would call very good for this type of vehicle."

JACK Z., CT (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Climate control is poor"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"For a 4wd vehicle, it's surprisingly quiet and has a good ride."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Towards the end of a recent 3,000 mile trip, the drivers seat was slightly uncomfortable to my left leg. The left raised lip of the seat caused some discomfort and I had to adjust the position of my left leg. It never was noticeable before or since that trip."

GARY L., FL (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"The seats are ok for short trips around town but we took a cross country trip (6,000 miles) and the seats are terrible, very hard, no support, have to stop just to stretch our legs. Extreamly difficult to drive more than 6 hours a day. After trying 3 different cushions I found one that helps but not much. Our next trip (5,000 miles) we took the van, it pulls our little trailer just fine, 2 less miles per gallon. I really wouldn't advise buying this truck to pull a trailer, it's geared for fuel e"

JAMES L., FL (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

Russell F., CA (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Seat adjustment is poor, Comfort poor on trips Seat heaters are very good."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"The seats in the Colorado don't adjust to where I'm really comfortable driving, pressure is put on the back of my knees. I have to sit on a cushion to adjust myself to sit flatter."

Anonymous, MI (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"The ride and comfort is great for a truck. I do have a plastic squeak in the dash that I don’t like. I also don’t like the location of the 4 wheel drive switch. I hit it with my knee and turn on the 4wd by mistake. There is no indication on the instrument panel to indicate you are in 4wd."

Kim H., CO (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"We use the Colorado for long trip-you can adjust the seat to any comfort level. Very comfortable to travel in"

Robert H., IN (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"The connection on my driver side seat belt went out. The dealer said I had to replace the seat belt receptacle, but it's out of warranty after just 2 years. Very annoyed with it as it keeps beeping telling me to fasten my seatbelt."

Mike V., IL (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"The comfort level is great in the 2016 Colorado, the leather interior is beautiful and comfortable and appears to be quality material. The heated seats are great in winter"

David T., NE (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Road noise is quite evident on the midnight edition, for the price the seats could/should be a lot better."

Justin M., MI (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE seats! Definitely not suitable for any trip over 1 hour. The ride on this truck is also terrible."

William T., OH (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"SEATS ARE VERY COMFORTABLE FOR LONG TRIPS."

Thomas B., CA (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"The seats were ranked lower when I was researching the vehicle before purchase but I am very satisfied. We've driven on long roadtrips from Texas to Arizona and felt very comfortable. The seat heaters have also been a blessing in the winter. They heat up fast."

Anonymous, AZ (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Very little leg room in the back seat with the front seats all the way back."

Anonymous, MI (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"I traded in a diesel F250 for the Colorado and was worried about comfort in the smaller truck. To my surprise, the Colorado has proven to be very comfortable, even on long range trips."

James B., TX (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Truck cabin is very quiet - quieter than most cars I've owned. Seats are very comfortable on long trips."

Anonymous, AR (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"For a small truck it sits very high and can be difficult for shorter people to get in and out and reach into the bed. The light and 4wd buttons are very easily hit by your need and the setting inadvertently changed."

C G., PA (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Quiet and comfortable"

James M., LA (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"What a mistake. This truck was hard to enter/exit and not comfortable once inside. I got it for a very good price, kept it for a week, and sold it. Bad decision."

Doug T., NH (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"This vehicle is very stylish and the V6 motor seems very responsive, I personally wish the seats were wider. I love the infotainment system, really neat stereo system. My truck has some paint spots and flaws but I'm hoping the dealer can correct them."

KATHY E., FL (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"New vehicles are simply expensive!"

AMY R., WI (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"the is the W/T (basic) model, and does not have many bells and whistles; but it is sturdy, and fun to drive."

Randy W., IL (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Terrible value! For what i paid for this truck, there have been too many quality problems."

William T., OH (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Solid well built work truck easy to maneuver in city traffic. Quality of materials is above average"

Joseph T., NY (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"POWER WINDOWS AND POWER SEATS CANT BE FOUND ON SIMILAR TRUCKS FOR A BASE MODEL."

Thomas B., CA (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Just have been very happy with this truck-- given many people my opinion and this has helped them with this opinion!"

J B., TX (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Overall, very good quality for the price paid. Interior materials are good - not great. Engine is powerful and relatively quiet with decent fuel economy. Great value compared to the other midsize pickup options."

Anonymous, MO (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Unless you are hauling extreme loads this truck is every thing you could possibly want"

Anonymous, MS (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"excellent value for what I wanted, not all bells & whistles, just enough to make it comfortable for me"

Anonymous, NC (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"It is considerably cheaper than a new full size pickup and does exactly the same things, such as hauling."

John S., WI (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"It is 4WD and with an 8 ft bed that fills all of my needs at a reasonable price."

Donald S., MI (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"The block heads do not make a CD player for this vehicle so I will never buy another one regardless of how much I like the truck. Absolutely stupid of GM. I had to buy a separate player and there is no place to put it."

William K., NY (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"This was a fantastic value with the diesel engine. Finally GM is quietly importing its turbo-diesel so common in its European products. Great fuel economy with the small displacement rather than the mega-monster diesel engines GM and all others usually sell in the US. Great fuel economy, over 30mpg combined city/highway. Great towing capacity for a small truck. Comfortable front and back seats. No ill effects of periodic drives of 700+ miles."

Anonymous, NH (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"mileage"

Stan C., OH (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"No CD player, difficult to see 4wd switch...must lean to the left and the dash has no indication if in 4wd, interior lights are irritating...come up to bright slowly and go to off same way"

Glenn W., PA (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"The Z71 package was a better buy then individual options."

Anonymous, MD (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"The main reason I bought this truck was because it was the only small truck option with a diesel and therefore a greater towing capacity. We have been traveling cross country with it pulling a 25' trailer and it has performed flawlessly. When towing it gets 10-14 mpg, when not it can average up to 28."

Paul C., PA (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Well I’ve always owned a truck in my household of just my wife and I. A number of Chevys a Couple Dodge and one Mercedes SUV. I can honestly tell everyone that the Chevy and Dodges were the most reliable and durable, with the best pricing than any of the others, including a couple cars along the way, Like a VW Cabriolet. We have also used the trucks for towing a travel trailer all over the east coast and Gulf Coast! With great service from all the Chevys and the Dodges. But this latest, the Colorado, have been the best, of course the newest, but it has great power and economy! You asked me the average, but that all depends. See on a highway trip with a small load and no trailer, it get around 26 mpg, sometimes more! While towing on our last 4,000 mile trip we averaged 15.5! That’s great considering all our other trucks were lucky to see 12! We are now considering our next truck, it will be a new Chevy for sure! But now we’re retired so we need only one vehicle, so this time we have more money to spend on just one. I’m waiting to see the new Chevy 6 cyl InLine Diesel!"

Kevin V., MA (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Comfortable and peppy...enjoy the ride of the smaller pickup truck"

Anonymous, IL (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

Anonymous, AR (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

Anonymous, LA (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"This is a very basic truck, without carpet, power locks or any unnecessary gadgets; and that's exactly what I wanted. I didn't have to pay for stuff I never use."

"Storage on the doors cheap and not big enough.Bed cover that was factory installed has Micky mouse connectors.I suggest anyone should buy there covers from other dealers."

"Absolutely incredible midsize pickup. the Toyota Tacoma is not even comparable and I looked at both. The Duramax turbo diesel has no smell or smoke, is very economical, and just the right size being bigger than the Tacoma. No comparison between the two. Just as car and driver stated a few months , the Colorado makes the Tacoma laughable."

TOM K., CO (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Look is aggressive and sporty"

Anonymous, TX (2016 Chevrolet Colorado)

"The hood is difficult to see out over. There are blind spots on the passenger side to a driver. The futuristic styling is not what I would choose, I liked the lines of the older Colorado."
