The world needs more small trucks. They’re easier to park and maneuver and cost less to feed than full-sized behemoths, like the Chevrolet Silverado, Ford F-150, and Ram 1500. But then the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon twins came along with the first modern compact truck redesign in 11 years. GM had Rocky Mountain high hopes for this truck, and sales have been strong.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2016 Chevrolet Colorado owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"Faulty infotainment module made back up camera non functional which I feel posed a significant safety hazard"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 2.8-L 4 Cyl diesel)
Display screen freezes up

"the display would freeze when I first started the truck. The dealer replaced the screen. No problem since"

Anonymous, OK (2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 3.6-L V6)

"so far it only happened in hot weather this summer-clears itself when the interior cools down. Hasn't been reported to dealer yet."

Anonymous, (2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 2.8-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"the dealer replaced the screen, and upgraded the firmware, under warranty. Problem was fixed"

Anonymous, OK (2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 3.6-L V6)

"The dashboard display would freeze or shift within 2 months of purchase. (Under certain conditions, I am prone to rely heavily on the advantages of the digital display). Dealer would reset. Finally display totally failed. CKT board was blamed for a short circuit with part cost OF $547 plus $295 for installation and "alignment". Although I had gone to dealer repeatedly with problem from within 6 weeks of purchase, they refused to cover because truck was nearly four years old. Although we had bought 3 vehicles from this dealer since moving here, unsure would use for our next one(s)."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Chevrolet Colorado LT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"See previous entry about display screen"

David M., NV (2016 Chevrolet Colorado LT 3.6-L V6)

"when first starting the vehicle, the screen freezes, or the touch screen quits working. It has happened about 6 times. I took it to the dealer about 6 months ago, and the did an firmware up grade. However, the freeze up has happened twice since, and I have an appointment to have it looked over again."

Anonymous, OK (2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 3.6-L V6)
Display screen goes blank

"Screen went blank on several occasions. Lost all functions through the equipment. Back to dealer twice on this issue"

Larry D., NY (2016 Chevrolet Colorado LT 3.6-L V6)

"Not just the display screen going blank, the whole dash board lights/displays go dark. It seems as though there is no reason for this to happen, time of day, cloud or shadow, ??? I just had my dealer check this but they were unable to pull any codes from the computer??? Also recently the display screen did a weirdly, the most noticeable, the clock had stopped and nothing would function. After we had stopped/ parked with car off (shopping) and restarted things were back to normal"

David M., NV (2016 Chevrolet Colorado LT 3.6-L V6)

"Software update seems to have resolved the issue which was very intermittent"

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 3.6-L V6)

"Screen suddenly went blank and did not work for the 50 mile ride home. Once it sat and was restarted it worked fine and has worked perfectly ever since"

Anonymous, WI (2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 3.6-L V6)

"There is a problem of which Chevrolet is aware with the radios installed in the W/T model, but which has not yet been remediated"

Anonymous, CT (2016 Chevrolet Colorado WT 3.6-L V6)

"Infotainment system became inoperable. Due to faulty computer module. Replaced under warranty"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 2.8-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"The screen just started to go blank one day. So backup camera, etc wouldn't work. I took it into the chevy dealer. It was under warranty, they did an upgrade to the software. Good to go"

Anonymous, UT (2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 3.6-L V6)

"We had several episodes with the screen going blank, eventually our Chevrolet dealer did a update to the system, that seemed to fix the issue. HOWEVER: instead of blank the screen dims to not quite blank and at odd times. I think that the sensor is not programed efficiently It does not adjust efficiently when driving through a tunnel or in a shadow area (mountain shadows), it is as if there is built in delay for the change it should make."

David M., NV (2016 Chevrolet Colorado LT 3.6-L V6)

"Only happened once. Humidity was extremely high for 24 hours prior. Also radio display does not wake up on last setting when humidity is high for long period."

Vaughn C., OK (2016 Chevrolet Colorado 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"the display screen would go blank on both displays. took it to dealer and they could not find problem, offered to replace radio"

Anonymous, (2016 Chevrolet Colorado LT 3.6-L V6)

"On start up, all display screens did not function. The gages were illuminated but all read zero. I got warnings that all safety systems were inoperable. I re-started and had same problem. I carefully drove home a short distance. After turning off engine and re-starting things seemed back to normal. This only happened once, but am concerned it may happen again."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Chevrolet Colorado LT 3.6-L V6)

"It is as if black plastic is overlaid the displays. It is not a dimming but a complete blackout. if dimmed certain elements are still faintly visible. (not in blackout mode! the dimmer switch has no effect aether) Recently we experience a blackout where even the clock stopped (from 1305 to 1341) OnStar would not connect nor was any part of the display visible. Including GPS. the AC and Radio continued to function but I could not see to change any settings. After shutting the vehicle off and on again things came back to normal. We have reported this to our dealer/Chevrolet several times and have them with a open complaint/notice on this. On a long road trip last Fall this weird blackout occured in broad daylight !?!? and the OnStar connection was lost also. A CHEVROLET dealer in Madison WI was able to get us connected w/OnStar again by doing a Global Reset"

David M., NV (2016 Chevrolet Colorado LT 3.6-L V6)

"When shifting back from reverse (when rear view camera is on) to drive, screen goes completely blue and will not display. Problem usually corrects itself if engine is shut off and vehicle is allowed to sit for a period of time, but will eventually recur."

James K., CT (2016 Chevrolet Colorado WT 3.6-L V6)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"Doesn't always read the device. Sometimes won't play"

Brenda T., FL (2016 Chevrolet Colorado Base 3.6-L V6)

"It was not consistantly working. A new module seemed to fix the problem"

Anonymous, MT (2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 3.6-L V6)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"The GPS antenna failed to locate the vehicle. The navigation map was stuck in a single location. After taking it to the dealer, it was in the shop for 9 days to fix. The dealer spent more than 15 hours of labor time to diagnose and replace the HMI interface. It's unacceptable to have a vehicle with less than 5000 miles (at the time of failure) to be in the shop for 9 days for a nav system issue"

Anonymous, TX (2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 3.6-L V6)

"Traffic information isn’t always available."

Anonymous, MA (2016 Chevrolet Colorado LT 2.8-L 4 Cyl diesel)
Radio

"Radio would drop out, antenna problem , repaired quickly by service"

Robert M., VA (2016 Chevrolet Colorado LT 2.8-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"Radio can not be entirely shut down at times. Can mute the volume, but it's on in the background and interferes with other radio functions like pandora. This has been a problem since the vehicle was new, and dealer unable to resolve the issue. "Radio functioing as it should." I am told."

Anonymous, (2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 2.8-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"After about 3 mo of operation, the radio control cable fell off the radio module."

Anonymous, MI (2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 3.6-L V6)

"Sirius radio will not play in town--same radio in Chrysler 300 plays perfectly in town."

Anonymous, LA (2016 Chevrolet Colorado LT 3.6-L V6)

"Radio turns on by itself (un-commanded). Prior to engine shut down, selecting OFF on the radio and then shutting the engine down produces an un-commanded radio turning on with the 2nd engine start."

Daniel M., CA (2016 Chevrolet Colorado LT 3.6-L V6)
Voice control commands

"Fails to understand voice commands"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 3.6-L V6)

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Rough shifting

"The transmission is unable to determine how to down shift smoothly when pressing the gas for increased acceleration. There is always a 2-3 second pause when pressing the gas before it shifts down. The vehicle will often "jump" along when you press the gas a small amount. It seems confused as to whether it should down shift or stay in the current gear. The manufacture does not acknowledge that this is a problem"

Anonymous, TX (2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 3.6-L V6)

"When slightly accelerating around 40mph the transmission shifts back and forth"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Chevrolet Colorado LT 3.6-L V6)

"has been in shop 5 times for transmission shifting/vibration problems and they do not know how to fix"

Anonymous, MD (2016 Chevrolet Colorado LT 3.6-L V6)

"Transmission doesn't always shift down to low enough gear when deaccelerting, have to depression gas petal significantly to get in proper gear which causes rough shift. Basically the transmission hunts for the appropriate gear"

Anonymous, UT (2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 3.6-L V6)

"Does not change gears smoothly"

Anonymous, NC (2016 Chevrolet Colorado WT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Bogged down / slow to react on application of throttle. Hard downshifts. Better after dealer updated transmission control software but still far from perfect."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 3.6-L V6)

"Transmission shudders and will be taken in for service"

Anonymous, CT (2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 2.8-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"This is related to chuggle situation. Transmission is in wrong gear at low speeds then lurches into gear abruptly."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Chevrolet Colorado LT 3.6-L V6)

"Lengthy pauses when applying the gas heavily, then the transmissions leaps into gear. Dangerous if I needed those sudden power to avoid an accident. In day to day use it's just plain annoying."

Anonymous, CO (2016 Chevrolet Colorado LT 3.6-L V6)

"Transmission seems confused and doesn't always now what gear to go in and hesitates"

Wayne W., MD (2016 Chevrolet Colorado LT 3.6-L V6)
Transmission computer

"Transmission gets lost at speeds around 40mph shifts to quickly and bogs down the engine. Complained to dealer they did nothing Chevrolet knows about and is doing nothing which is bad because it's a safety issue. To correct the problem I purchased a $600 aftermarket tuner that changed the transmission shift points and fixed the problem. It's a crying shame to have to spend $600 to correct a problem with a new vehicle that's under warranty"

Anonymous, NC (2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 3.6-L V6)

"Needed to be reflashed. works well now"

Anonymous, CT (2016 Chevrolet Colorado LT 3.6-L V6)

"Transmission bogging down and hard downshifts attributed to computer program/software by dealer. Updated software supposedly installed.. Issue better but still not perfect."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 3.6-L V6)

"auto up-shifting wasn't always smooth"

Anonymous, PA (2016 Chevrolet Colorado LT 3.6-L V6)

"It does not shit down properly unless you engauge cruise."

Ben G., OH (2016 Chevrolet Colorado LT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

"Transmission doesn't downshift when it needs to and creates chuggle situation, especially, at low speeds. Computer upgrades have not resolved problem."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Chevrolet Colorado LT 3.6-L V6)

"Transmission upshifts and downshifts at wrong times."

Daniel M., CA (2016 Chevrolet Colorado LT 3.6-L V6)
Transmission sensor or solenoid

"It was in the shifter itself, it stuck in drive and wouldn't let me get the key out. They said it was the wiring in the shifter itself that went bad. It has not happened again."

Stephen K., NC (2016 Chevrolet Colorado LT 3.6-L V6)

Fuel System

Check engine light, sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor), emission control devices (includes EGR), engine computer, engine computer, fuel cap, fuel gauge/sender, fuel injection system, fuel pump, fuel leaks, stalling or hesitation.

What Owners Say

"Took several visits to track down problem and time to repair. took forever to refuel (like it was always airlocked, and auto start would not work)"

Anonymous, NL (2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 3.6-L V6)

"DEF system/sensor problem"

Anonymous, WY (2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 2.8-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"DEF - Diesel Exhaust Fluid system issues - warming lamp illumination - limited top speed. Each time the vehicle experiences a DEF system fault the vehicle will illuminate the DEF warning lamp and send a DIC message that the vehicle will go into a reduced speed mode in a set amount of miles. This becomes very uncomfortable when your traveling cross country on highways where the speed is 75mph, and the DIC message tells you that it will limit to 55mph if you continue to drive, then to 45mph, and then to 5mph. When you have hundreds of miles to get where your going this might as well just leave you stranded, as the feeling is the same. The vehicle has been in the dealership multiple times to replace various components within the DEF system, but I still have issues with the robustness of the system."

James D., MI (2016 Chevrolet Colorado LT 2.8-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"Recalled and will be brought in for service"

Anonymous, CT (2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 2.8-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"The emissions control unit gave me problems starting the engine about a year ago but had it fixed by Chevrolet dealer. It is currently giving me the same problems."

Anonymous, MO (2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 3.6-L V6)

"Diesel Particulate Filter and sensor had to be replaced. Still was giving issues, so they replaced the entire exhaust, since that time no more problems."

Anonymous, OH (2016 Chevrolet Colorado LT 2.8-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"engine light came on and according to the service document there was open wire connector on the purge valve circuit which was repaired under warranty."

Fuel pump

"Fuel module failed and had to have vehicle towed to dealer for repair, would not start"

Paul C., FL (2016 Chevrolet Colorado LT 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"I was having issues with noise coming from engine compartment when the A/C was on. The dealer replaced the A/C compressor. The part was under warranty and the replacement was made at no cost to me"

Thomas S., OK (2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 3.6-L V6)

"After replacing (under warranty) the evaporator and (2 days later) the condenser, the compressor was bad. worst part was that GM had a national backorder and would not be able to supply a replacement. This was in September. My calls indicated that this issue was not limited to the Chevrolet"

John T., TX (2016 Chevrolet Colorado WT 3.6-L V6)
Automatic climate control

"heater not working only cool air problem 2times problem resolved"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Chevrolet Colorado Base 2.5-L 4 Cyl)

Karl D., NY (2016 Chevrolet Colorado LT 3.6-L V6)
Driveline vibration

"Massive vibration when shifting gears. These problems are all tied potentially to the engine computer and transmission capability. Serious implications but dealer and GM insist this is normal operating conditions"

Elizabeth P., WI (2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 2.5-L 4 Cyl)
Driveshaft or axle

"The axle was bent (probably caused by previous owner), causing the left rear wheel to wobble and a slight vibration"

Anonymous, RI (2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 3.6-L V6)
Electrical failure

"Trailer brake started functioning sporadicaly when about 1 year old. Taken to local dealer many times, each time no problem found, then started telling me problem is the trailer, accessory wiring, everything except the truck. Had to prove them wrong by videoing my truck with different trailer before they took it seriously. At one point they had truck for six weeks trying to diagnose problem before getting corporate service involved. Service mgr was sympathetic, but twice told me maybe i should just take it somewhere else. Finaly replaced the electronic brake module after about 2 years of dealing with a serious safety issue. No problems since. During this time truck developed issue with 4WD service light, disabling 4WD. Again each time could not fix problem. At a different dealer by now, who eventually fixed the problem by replacing the 4WD module after rewiring the entire circuit on the advice of corporate service. Corporate customer service was helpful and gave additional 2 year warranty on certain components, but i'm not sure the average person would have been so persistant, or fortunate. Retired GM employee, probably won't buy GM again. Actually like the truck, when everything works, but tired of constant service issues."

Anonymous, (2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 2.8-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"car cut off after fill up"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Chevrolet Colorado LT 3.6-L V6)
Engine computer

"Massive vibration. Cannot find solution for climbing hills when shifting gears. This computer supposedly attempts to learn your driving style and adapt a solution for said style. I say the computer is learning disabled because the solution it finds produces massive vibrations and inability to accelerate. This not only creates a safety hazard but also has Implications to the long term vehicle use"
