T he world needs more small trucks. They’re easier to park and maneuver and cost less to feed than full-sized behemoths, like the Chevrolet Silverado, Ford F-150, and Ram 1500. But then the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon twins came along with the first modern compact truck redesign in 11 years. GM had Rocky Mountain high hopes for this truck, and sales have been strong.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

What Owners Say

"Quick and maneuverable compared to a full size truck"

Robert J., CA (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Tows very well."

Anonymous, MI (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Plenty of power, drives like a mid size car, and quiet compared to last truck."

S P., TX (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"The engine (V6) probably has sufficient power but the transmission programming is terrible. It waits until the engine is lugging before it downshifts. Let's say you want to gently pass a vehicle at 50 mph. You slowly press down on the accelerator but nothing happens, you press down some more and still nothing. If you are on a slight incline, you may even lose speed. Pressing down more and the transmission will jump down two gears and you get a lot more acceleration than you need or want. Often,..."

William F., MD (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Acceleration is quick without wheel spin or axel hop. Very easy to drive at highway speeds with no drifting. Good brake feel with or without load. The 8 speed transmission does not like stop and go traffic, often hesitates to upshift and can clunk during a down shift. Otherwise transmission smoothly shifts in normal driving."

Anonymous, NC (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"It drives on the rough side now, but when I test drove it no problem."

William B., MO (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"nothing, wish i hadn't bought this truck. Looking already to trade in and only about 1000 miles on it"

Randall B., AZ (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"It's the best small truck out there and well worth the money, and best Toyota in all areas and most importantly safety."

Ernedst A., KY (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"handling is surprisingly good for a pick up."

Anonymous, MD (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"For a four cylinder diesel this truck has get up and go. Runs quietly unlike older diesels. Handles excellent for towing and hauling or just riding down the road."

Anonymous, MI (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"I have the turbo diesel. I was attracted to it because of the fuel economy. However the day to day driving experience with the diesel is abysmal. The turbo lag is noticeable and long. Bottom end torque is non-existent. The transmission shifting is sloppy and imprecise. To have a decent in-town driving experience I frequently set the truck into tow/haul mode which allows the engine to rev higher before shifting and downshifts more aggressively and keeps the engine in its power band."

Mike M., IA (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Very smooth on the highway. Perfectly adequate acceleration for a diesel. Economy is fabulous."

Clifford D., TX (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"quick acceleration, but a bit jittery on irregular surfaces"

Anonymous, WI (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Always shifting gears!"

Anthony J., NH (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"There is a significant turbo lag. I have almost gotten in accidents because of the delayed time between me stepping on the accelerator and the truck responding."

Rodney M., CO (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"A powerful V6 and eight-speed auto transmission allows effortless driving in hilly driving conditions."

David Y., PA (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Very responsive, I like the throttle and shift point calibrations. Handling is very good, and the vehicle is much easier to drive and park in constricted spaces than a full-size truck."

Anonymous, PA (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Excellent acceleration, even loaded. Good brakes, and confident handling. Good mileage (lifetime average 23 mpg) for so much power."

Russell N., OR (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Handles very well and is responsive. Acceleration is good"

Anonymous, CO (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Very strong acceleration including when towing"

Anonymous, VA (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Prior to the 2017 Chevrolet Colorado I am now driving I owned and drove a similar 2015 Colorado. Handling of the 2017 is similar to that on the 2015, but acceleration is much better, and quieter, with the 2017. This may be due to the fact that the 2017 has an 8-speed automatic transmission while the 2015 had a 8-speed transmission."

Richard W., WA (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"I use my truck for hauling building materials and aggregate. It drives very well on road and off road as-well-as being loaded or empty. The suspension is very very good."

Van R., TX (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Very good in the city and in traffic for a truck, good parking in small spaces too"

Anonymous, UT (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"The acceleration is very good with good directional stability and no wheel hop. Shifting is usually unnoticed and smooth except in stop and go traffic when it hunts and sometimes clunks into gear. The steering is a variable effort design however I think it’s too light at highway speeds. The ride is ok for a truck. Watch out for speed bumps as the tail will bounce."

Anonymous, NC (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"My V6 is smooth and has plenty of power for its daily driver duties. It's an LT model so it came with the Autotrac transfer case which moves between 2WD and 4WD seamlessly when conditions aren't the best."

Robert R., MI (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Good seats, good driving position, quiet on freeway"

Robert J., CA (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"This truck costs close to the same price for a full size truck, yet the seats are smaller (not as deep) and lack the bolstering of the seats in the full size Chevys."

Bob N., ME (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"The seats in my Colorado are not well-enough padded and cause discomfort, especially on longer drives (i.e. my drive to our vacation home on the Outer Banks)."

Dale S., PA (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Very comfortable front seats -- not too firm or too soft. Rear seats are very firm with little legroom, but I do appreciate that the rear passenger-side seat can be configured to safely hold a child car seat."

Anonymous, MD (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Car like smooth ride . Hood shakes at Hwy speed . Back seat comfortable. Under back seat storage is poor . The backseats fold up but seriously limits space for storage. Terrible design no storage space in back. Owned Honda Ridgeline for ten years loved the trunk and all the storage in back. Back seats folded flat making lots of storage space. Chevy needs a makeover."

Patrick L., WI (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Quiet and smooth ride for a pickup. Seats have been comfortable on long trips"

Anonymous, CO (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Seats are very hard and uncomfortable on longer drives."

Anonymous, WI (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"For basic seats with no lumbar adjustment I find the seats very comfortable even on long trips."

Anonymous, IL (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Seats are comfortable"

Anonymous, MI (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Back seat too small no room at all anyone over 8 years of age will not fit"

Raymond M., NH (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Comfortable fabric seats in my LT model. Good lumbar support and are cool in summer and warm in winter. Ride is pretty good for a pickup."

Robert R., MI (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"All good except ride quality that is a little rough."

Anonymous, IN (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"The seats are comfortable for my back on long drives; and, the noise level is very good. It rides almost like my Pacifica, which I love!"

Frances C., AL (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Drive's seat is tilted too far back for my comfort. I added a folded towel to correct the tilt."

Russell N., OR (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Seating is a bit stiff and unrefined. Leg comfort for some one tall is a tad disconcerting. Fit and finish is excellent and noise level is very very low. Ride is a C+."

Charles G., TX (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Drivers seat not very comfortable for long driving stints"

Anonymous, KS (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Poor rear view, lower rear end. Noisy tires."

Robert R., OR (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"I just like it always a good truck"

Jim T., OH (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"It's a midsize truck with full size truck towing capacity. The new V6 engine makes a 100 more HP than my older Explorer and gets better gas mileage. Seeing 23 mpg highway in 2 wheel drive mode. GM sales incentive on the Z71 package brought price down so it was cheaper than less well equipped GMC Canyon."

Anonymous, NC (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"For all of the problems we have had and all the trips to the dealership and the poor MPG it is not worth the trouble."

William B., MO (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Diesel mileage is excellent. Torque is unbelievable."

Clifford D., TX (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"I got this Z71 version with 4 wheel drive and crew cab for the same price as a std crew cab model. The small truck handles my 19 ft boat with barely a down shift so there is plenty of power for a larger load. The V6 and 8 speed transmission make a nice package."

Anonymous, NC (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"The Z71 is considered the top of the line trim level in the Colorado since they don't offer an LTZ trim level. Yet it comes with what is easily, at least in my opinion, the ugliest seat trim. The vinly/leather trim and hard cloth facing of the seats is ugly. They now offer full leather seats but at an almost $1,000 premium over the standard Z71 seats. In my opinion, the LT level seat trim has a much better appearance."

Bruce W., NJ (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"Great gas mileage for the power the comes with the V6"

Anonymous, UT (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"I expected a much better overall value for a 2017 mid-size truck. Cup holders are very lacking."

Rodney M., CO (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)

"The Colorado suits my needs. It pulls my bass boat with no problem. It is very reliable."

Mary N., TX (2017 Chevrolet Colorado)
