The Equinox splits the difference between small SUVs and midsized models. While nice and roomy inside, it's less efficient than other five-passenger SUVs, but burns as much gas as larger, seven-passenger models. The 3.6-liter engine supplies quick acceleration times at the test track, but feels sluggish in routine driving with its unrefined and slow-shifting six-speed automatic transmission doing it no favors.

Anonymous, AZ (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"4cyl has little or NO power"

John S., SC (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"good acceleration it is a 6 cyl comfortable. bad no ac in rear area road noise is bad can not open window when driving mits much to noisy from wind. but mechanically has been good"

"Acceleration, handling and versatility."

"very disappointed in the fuel economy and the lack of acceleration capability"

ANNE G., MA (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"engine sounds like it is going to blow up"

MARTIN W., PA (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"V6 good acceleration and handling Rear view camera front and side air bags Some limited viewing in front window due to pillar size to accommodate air bags Our LT also has a premium sound system"

Anonymous, AB (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"I love this car, but if I get another it will have a 6 cyl engine. The 4 cylinder is a little under powered for this heavy a car."

Anonymous, FL (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"It drives too slow and excelerates terribly. The cars transmission slips from time to time so the car jolts forward. Not very safe"

D W., ON (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"4 cylinder engine is a dog. wish I got the 6"

Anonymous, NY (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Decent acceleration (6 cyl.) and very roomy for a,vehicle of that size. I'm 6', over 200 lbs and have no problems at all with rear seating and driver seating..."

Anonymous, NY (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"It drives like a car in steering and smooth ride. If there is anything I am not thrilled with it's the fact that it sometimes jerks when I begin to accelerate. This is caused by the transmission, and they manual says it's because of it not being warmed up. I don't know that I believe that, but at least it is a known issue."

Anonymous, IN (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"good handling but do not like the acceleration"

JOSEPH B., IN (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The 2012 Chevrolet Equinox is a 4 cylinder and it doesn't have the acceleration that is always necessary to get up to 70 mph and stay there. We should have purchased a 6 cylinder and will do so next time."

Anonymous, TX (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Even with the 3.1 liter 3 cylinder engine acceleration is a little sluggish."

JUDITH W., WI (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The 4 cylinder's accelerates with difficulty and sometimes struggles when shifting from first to 2nd. Occasionally it will pop when making the shift."

Anonymous, MI (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Sluggish acceleration and average handling. Very comfortable interior seating and good phone and GPS system."

FRANCIS W., PA (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"4 cyl. Motor gives poor acceleration given the weight of the vehicule. Fuel consumption is good though. Handling and steering are excellent and the ride is very stable and precise."

Anonymous, QC (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"I have the V6 and the power is very good. It can tow and it can pass. It rides and handles like a truck, which is exactly what I wanted and expected."

Anonymous, VA (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"very sluggish for 4 cyl."

Anonymous, MO (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Engine seems to be working hard all the time. Doesn't seem smooth."

DOROTHY S., NV (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Acceleration is poor and causes difficulty in merging onto high speed roads."

Anonymous, NJ (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Power steering making noise and has vibration at low speeds. Chevrolet service wanted $1200 for repair and was told it may or may not correct problem. Why would anyone pay $1200 to not have problem corrected? Is it just me or am I missing something here?"

DON R., KY (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Very easy to handle and the acceleration is all that is required, while at times may seem a bit sluggish, the gear ratios seem about right to accelerate on hills."

David N., WI (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Great to drive. Wish it had the 6 cyl. but i like the wheelbase and the way it handles."

Anonymous, VT (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Handles well. Steering is still tight and responsive. Acceleration is anemic, but that is the reality of the 4 cylinder engine. Runs well, but power is lacking for acceleration."

Mark C., IN (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"This vehicle has the v6 engine and towing package and does a good job of towing the boat and trailer I own. When not towing the boat, it has sufficient acceleration to easily blend into high speed highway traffic"

Anonymous, AL (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The V6 engine responds well. The handling is great for this type of vehicle."

Anonymous, NC (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"ADEQUATE ACCLEREATION, NIMBLE HANDLEING"

Anonymous, BC (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Great driving long distance. Quick going thru' traffic on busy highways."

Anonymous, IA (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The engine is very responsive when the throttle is depressed. The roadability is great responsive quick and stable."

Tom C., TX (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Responsive and good on the highway"

Anonymous, WI (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Car still handles very well and has plenty of power when needed."

Anonymous, PA (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"This vehicle comes in a 4 and 6 Cylinder, I feel for the size of the vehicle, the 4 Cylinder is very much underpowered especially when the AC is on and you have a full load of passengers, never mind going up a hill. Otherwise, it handles very nicely and good on gas for the size of the vehicle."

Anonymous, NY (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Feels and handles like a car, great road manners."

Ernie D., NY (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The Equinox is a 4 cylinder. Acceleration can very sluggish and quite noisy when accelerating on a freeway or when necessary to accelerate quickly for passing or emergency purposes."

Daniel C., CA (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"If I had to do it over again, I'd have probably bought a v6 Equinox. We wouldn't have taken THAT big a hit in fuel economy, and the 4 cylinder feels a bit underpowered. It's not unsafe or miserable to drive--it just needs a little more oomph. It does handle nicely for an SUV, though."

Quinton L., OH (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"meets expectations"

Roger B., DE (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Acceleration is slow."

Chuck H., GA (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The V6 accelerates nicely"

Christine G., WI (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"V-6 engine is peppy, ride is comfortable"

L M., SC (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The acceleration on this car is very slow, even with only one or two passengers on this. The transmission does not respond well in low gears to downshift in order to provide more power."

Kevin C., NH (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Acceleration is very good and is attributed to the fact we have a V6 engine not a 4 cylinder engine. Handling is very good and firm. Steering system is hydraulic."

Bruce Z., AB (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The 4 cylinder engine tends to bog or hesitate when accelerating."

Anonymous, FL (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"road noise on concrete paving is so bad you cannot here talk or radio."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Tires are noisy."

Richard K., NY (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"rear ac or heat is poor road noise bad cannot open any window because of air noise"

Anonymous, DE (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The seat is comfortable, the ride is medium, you do feel the bumps in the road"

Dave R., IA (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The HEATED seats are nicely designed and comfortable even on a long ride. The overall ride and noise level is comparable to a higher end vehicle."

Donald K., SC (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Comfortable seats, roomy back seat bench that adjusts."

Douglas M., WA (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"It handles like a passenger automobile not a van or truck"

Don T., NY (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"After 4 years of ownership the comfort remains outstanding. There are no visible signs of wear. I use the vehicle for multiple purposes, to include carrying around athletic equipment and gardening supplies."

Richard M., NJ (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Purchased new. Live on dirt road and Mfgr never able to resolve dust sucking in through back flow through vents. Car always dusty inside and noticeably uncomfortable breathing"

K D., NE (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Surprising comfortable for small SUV"

Anonymous, NJ (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The Equinox is downright spacious. It's a little noisy (the engine noise transmits pretty clearly into the cabin), but the seats are extremely comfortable, as is the driving position. The ride is smooth and not overly floaty or jarring. The back seat is quite roomy, and it's adjustable (sliding forward and back with two options for incline per side)."

Quinton L., OH (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"No a/c in back seat area. I live in desert people complain."

PHILLIP S., NV (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The seats have good support My wife claims it is comfortable even when her back is bothering her."

BARBARA Y., ON (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The ride is somewhat rough."

Anonymous, MI (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"My only issue with the Equinox is the positioning of the A/C vents. The vents are low and there is little play in the movement of the vents so essentially the air ven aims at your hands on the steering wheel when you are driving. The engine could be quieter, but then this isn't top lop line model (Traverse)."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Very comfortable ride and handling."

RICHARD D., KY (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The back seat leg room is amazing! Lot's of space and a reclining back bench seat make this a very comfortable area for a full size adult on long trips. The in-dash radio and steering wheel audio controls could be better designed. For example, you cannot use the radio channel search control from the steering wheel."

GEORGE M., NE (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Only 2 air vents- difficult to cool back seat and only drivers seat is electronic- front passenger seat moves manually"

LAURA S., TX (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"I don't think the seats are as comfortable as the seats in the cars I owned in the 90's."

ROBERT S., TX (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Suspension is too firm so any bumps in the road are felt."

Anonymous, NJ (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"I find the seats to be slightly uncomfortable. I have some difficulty sitting for more than a half hour in these seats."

ANNE O., MD (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Very pleased with everything except ride is rather harsh - like a truck."

Anonymous, FL (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The front bucket seats could be a little wider otherwise very comfortable."

Anonymous, DE (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The driver seat has a wide range of adjustment and is very comfortable. The settings selector makes it very easy for my wife and I to change as driver. The rear seat is adjustable for leg room making it very comfortable for passengers."

JAMES W., MA (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Leg and Body Room"

Anonymous, RI (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Not adequate climate control for rear passengers, driver seat memory setting drifts; front windshield defroster/defogger very weak; side view mirrors' defroster ineffective"

Anonymous, MD (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"AC does not cool down as fast as I think it should. The back seat has more difficulty cooling."

JAMES T., MI (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Very comfortable travel car"

Anonymous, PA (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Excellent noise insulation and good padding to reduce ride noise and rattle."

Anonymous, QC (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The front seats are the only thing I don't love. They are shaped like a cup, with high sides. Getting in and out of the vehicle is uncomfortable. My 80 year old uncle has to sit in the back because those seats are flat. It is too difficult to get out of the front because you have to lift yourself up first, you can not just slide out."

HELEN O., FL (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"This vehicle is the right size and right height driving compared to a car. The controls are easy to use and the seats are comfortable and easy to adjust."

JOHNOTHY S., IL (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Rust on inside bottom of doors."

Anonymous, MI (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Seats comfort and adjustments, ride Had problem with driver info screen going out. Chevrolet shop had to replace at 50k miles 3.6 yrs old."

SCOTT W., CO (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"pro: sounds, ride ok con: seating is cramped : air vent flow directionality not good"

Anonymous, NM (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Our 2012 Equinox is one of the most comfortable cars I've ever owned. The seats are fantastic, and there is a ton of passenger space. The engine noise can be a bit loud, but that's my only real complaint."

Quinton L., OH (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Road noise us very bad. I would not purchase this vehicle again."

Gary M., TX (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"For an SUV it drives as easily as a sedan. Comfortable seats and responsive steering."

"Road noise can be distracting, unless radio is turned up."

Chuck H., GA (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"very loud road noise"

Anonymous, CA (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"I am very short and this vehicle is very easy to get in and out of without needing a step. It passes what I call the " butt" test, I can easily slide into the seat. the lumbar support is very good. The ride is very good. It is a quiet ride as well. The seat warmers are very powerful, almost to hoot on the highest level, but easily controlled."

Lynne S., MA (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Seats are extremely comfortable for long rides."

Anonymous, IL (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Very comfortable riding and very easy access to vehicle - some noise but not distracting"

Anonymous, SD (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"I have an LTZ model with leather seats. They are the most comfortable seats under all conditions that I have owned over the past 60 years."

Anonymous, GA (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"GOOD SEATS, LOW NOISE LEVEL, RIDE IS AVERAGE"

Anonymous, BC (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Seats have not sagged since buying our Equinox. The seats are heated which comes in handy during the cold weather months as well as for lower back pain. Drivers seat is fully automated and reclines. Passenger side not fully automated but also reclines."

Bruce Z., AB (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Very comfortable for older folks on long trips."

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"For the amount of miles on it, this SUV has served us well without any major mechanical problem. The Equinox is nicely equipped and handles the road nicely in any road condition."

Donald K., SC (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"4 cylinder so seems at times to lack acceleration"

Anonymous, MN (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Our Equinox has been rock-solid. It's had one recall, and one minor repair covered under the powertrain warranty. We paid almost $6k under sticker for it, and, with incentives, you could do the same. At the time (2012), it was hard to beat the price-to-features ratio in the Equinox, so we went with it."

Quinton L., OH (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The amenities as a group are great in the LTZ"

Doug H., WA (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Outstanding city and highway mileage. Great acceleration and the size of the vehicle gives me a sense of safety in traffic!"

Richard M., NJ (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"0% Financing, XM AM/FM Radio, A/C, also provides good heating in the winter months. Bluetooth compatible (can make phone calls through my iPhone) Heated seats w driver side lumbar support and electronic seat adjustment. Backseat is adjustable allowing for extra leg room. Also has USB connection and a number of power outlets. Dual remote mirrors."

Anonymous, AB (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"I bought the base model which was very well equipped for the price"

DOUGLAS M., TN (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"pleased to be able to buy a vehicle made in Ontario -- this was a deciding factor -- and aside from the rusting issue on door hems, it has proven to be a great vehicle. GM did repair the problem at no charge."

JIM M., ON (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Good value."

Anonymous, MI (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"very sluggish for 4 cyl."

Anonymous, MO (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"it is nearly 6 yr. old and if Traded it in now I should expect $16,000 trade in value per KBB. The MSRV was $28,095 and I paid $28,520 w/ tax & title, That is only 56% depreciation."

THOMAS O., OH (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"We have 1993 Ranger, 2006 Malibu Maxx, 2012 Toyota Senna, 1999 suburban, and the Equinox is the tightest and most quiet. The qualitity seems very good"

"Excellent price for the low mileage it has on it"

DIANNE M., SK (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"E85 option was great. That is all that I use."

JAMES G., PA (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"good view in traffic, relatively comfortably rear seating for adults, rear vision camera, easy trunk/rear access, trunk capacity"

EDWARD B., MI (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"All they make is junk nowadays. Engine was just rebuilt due to oil consumption, had a cracked exhaust manifold, resinator just puked, and since the dealer rebuild, it is a pig on gas"

Anonymous, ON (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Car was priced right and maintenance was low cost."

Brenda W., FL (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The navigation system is very clear. I am upset that I see newer models coming without and they say to use your phone...I do not want to use my phone, I like the bigger screen on the nav system. the mileage is good . i have 180, 000 miles on my car and it has only needed service to date for routine wear and tear. the only factor that I have an issue with is that the rear hatch is all rusted and pitted. It clearly was not painted in the same technique as the rest of the car which is very good shape for its age and use,"

Lynne S., MA (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Great value. We feel it’s time to get a new car but have had no problems with this one."

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"It's smartly styled"

RICHARD D., KY (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"It just looks "right." Nothing fancy, but it has the sleek look of a vehicle with purpose."

Anonymous, VA (2012 Chevrolet Equinox)

"I felt there was too much plastic inside which is supposed to make it safer, I guess, but I felt it lacked storage space for as big as it is. I want the storage I got in a van--with the shift on the wheel rather between the seats. Also, it was SO big on the outside it barely fit in our garage."
