The Equinox splits the difference between small SUVs and midsized models. While nice and roomy inside, it's less efficient than other five-passenger SUVs, but burns as much gas as larger, seven-passenger models. The 3.6-liter engine supplies quick acceleration times at the test track, but feels sluggish in routine driving with its unrefined and slow-shifting six-speed automatic transmission doing it no favors.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Ed S., MS (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

Anonymous, FL (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

David B., IL (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"excellent car - no repairs !!! - Sluggish acceleration - step on it & motor roars but car does not move much faster"

"My 4 cylinder Equinox is a little sluggish on starting out and on inclines. I am satisfied to put up with that for the better gas mileage."

Paul E., NB (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Acceleration when entering highway is sluggish."

Marilyn S., AZ (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"blind spot where passenger side - side mirror is. Makes for very difficult driving in congested areas"

Anonymous, MT (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Handles extremely well. Because of my height (5'1) there is a blind spot on my right rear side that is hard for me to judge which makes me have a difficult time backing out. But mirrors help me immensely and also the warning chimes stop me."

Kimberly F., WA (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"accelerates very fast--excellent driving quality"

Anonymous, NC (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Drove thru the mountains of Colorado, Wyoming, and South Dakota without loss of power, traction or control. Smooth driving on nearly any surface. Has enough power to pass or get out of the way. Very good, stable handling in emergency situations."

Beth H., MO (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"nicely designed, comfortable, compact"

Terry F., MI (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Acceleration is MUCH better than I expected from a small/midsize car. Even interstate driving is relatively easy. Acceleration is remarkable for a vehicle of its size on the interstate."

Mary L., TN (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The posts inside the car are so wide (probably for accident safety) but it makes it difficult to see."

Alice H., PA (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"a little sluggest acceleration"

Anonymous, MI (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"If I were to do it again, I would have taken the Equinox with the 6 cylinder engine instead of the 4 cyl"

GERALD L., ON (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"4 cylinder is under powered and bad gas mileage. Advertised as 23 to 32 mpg. best on the road, 26mpg. Strugles going up hills, eg Virginia I-75."

Anonymous, NY (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The four cylinder engine strains to go up hills."

ROBERT K., MO (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Acceleration of the 4-cylinder engine is minimal but not what was unexpected. Down shifting when pulling up a hill will sometimes cause excessive engine RPM."

Anonymous, TX (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Satisfied with everything on this car"

RAYMOND M., WA (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"all good. Except columns in the front are two wide causes a small blind spot."

DANIEL P., MO (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"It feels gutless on acceleration and the brakes fade in the middle of pressing on them, but it catches back up. Disconcerting to me."

MARY J., WA (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Acceleration is great. Handling is a little squeamish in corners, and a bit rough riding. But overall ok. I've driven nicer SUVs but am overall satisfied."

Anonymous, IN (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Has a significant hesitation at the beginning of acceleration."

Anonymous, IL (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"We drove our Equinox on a 3600 mile road trip in 2014, it did great! The 4 cylinder had plenty of power in the Sierra Nevadas and we had no problem with the traction/handling driving in a snowstorm in the same mountains (on I-80)"

NICHOLAS B., FL (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Under powered"

Anonymous, WA (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"4 cyl is a bit sluggish, would have preferred the 6 cyl."

FRANK P., CA (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"I wish the equinox had smoother and more acceleration. It revs very high and is a bit sluggish when you need fast acceleration"

Anonymous, RI (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Handles well but not AWD or 6 cylinder. Not satisfied with acceleration"

Anonymous, MA (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The four cylinder engine is not strong enough for the vehicle"

Anonymous, FL (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The increased mileage of the I-4 is not sufficient to offset the lack of power. The interior road noise is unacceptable for the price paid."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Handling is great and choose 2.4 liter engine for mileage rather than power !"

RAY B., WA (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Handling excellent. Acceleration mushy. Transmission hunts for gears on hills and when passing. Have the V6. Engine has enough HP so I am guessing this is a gearing / trans issue to keep the MPG up for the EPA ratings."

JOSEPH Z., NY (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Poor acceleration due to transmission gearing. Torque converter not tightly coupled and churns."

Anonymous, OH (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Very easy to drive, not the greatest rear view. The backup camera is very basic."

Anonymous, MD (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Acceleration is limited with the 4 cylinder engine. Must turn off the economy feature to get any pickup at all."

MICHAEL H., NJ (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Being a four cylinder is good but it doesn't get up and go like a six cylinder. Next time I would get a six cylinder."

Anonymous, FL (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Guess I wasn't paying much attention to details when we decided to buy the Equinox. I was very surprised to find that it only had a 4 cylinder engine. However, it performs and accelerates extremely well. Have been very satisfied with it."

JAMES S., SD (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"4 cylinder. Slow accelleration."

NANCY M., VA (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"This is a nice vehicle to drive with plenty of front seats space"

Anonymous, OH (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"This is a very comfortable vehicle."

Anonymous, VA (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Very comforable"

Ned B., OH (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"seat's are very comfortable, ride comfortable and vehicle is quiet"

Monte M., OH (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Leather heated seats, very comfortable."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"I sit tall and have lower back issues with most bucket seats. This drivers seat is great. I get support for my lower back and don't have the upper back being pushed forward in an unnatural posture. The heated seat is very good but I would like more back heat at the lower settings. At the medium setting there is no back heat and TO Much bum heat. The drivers door could use better sealing. There is wind noise but nothing like my previous Prius and Vibe."

Dennis P., WI (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Quiet and spacious, plenty of trunk space and the rear seats fold down for large items."

Michael C., MO (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Very roomy and comfortable. Can be a bit sluggish going uphill."

Geoff M., NS (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Seats=comfortable, supportive. Ride somewhat stiff. High level of road/tire noise - level(s) vary with road surface conditions."

Anonymous, FL (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"the front seats seem to be caving in when the car is only 3 years old I would think they would be more durable"

Linda K., WA (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Love the heated seats! Next want a heated steering wheel."

Alice H., PA (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The structure of the seats to prevent back pain or fatigue is excellent. It's the main reason I bought the car. The noise and ride are ok, not great nor bad."

Anonymous, NC (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

Shirley B., PA (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Drives nice and is very comfortable"

Anonymous, ON (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"This vehicle feels like I am flying an airplane. The suspension is wonderful and it accelerates very quick. I cannot feel the road most of the time. it such a plush ride and well worth the price even though it was not an inexpensive price."

Kimberly F., WA (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Like all the features like heated seats and memorized controls. I have a long commute and it is comfortable and fairly quiet. My only complaint is it is pretty easy to "unmemorize" the seat seating."

Mary D., MA (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The adjustable front seats are the most comfortable I've found for my bad back"

Anonymous, SD (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"There is a lot of road noise when driving."

Gina C., PA (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"It has significant interior noise on the highway."

Mark S., IA (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Ride is quite stiff and bumpy.Seats are somewhat uncomfortable."

"The road noise is louder than I like."

Anonymous, TX (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"It not a quiet ride."

Anonymous, WI (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Seats are not comfortable. I am 5’11‿ and weigh161#. The AC is noisy. Ride is rough, compared to two previous SUV’s, Mountaineer and Suburban."

Eugene T., FL (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Poor visability - lots of blind spots and I do not have any of the newer featurs to see other cars and pedistrians"

Anonymous, FL (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"I wish the seats were more maneuverable, so that they are not tipped back. My back requires a seat pan that is level, not tipped back."

Anonymous, IN (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Love he seat, especially the lumbar feature. Memory controls for two separate individuals do not alway work correctly. The car is a SUV, but still I feel it rides a little rougher and nosier than it should. I have excellent Michelin tires."

Anonymous, FL (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"3 way power seat (LS model) doesn't tilt forward enouh for me. Accelerator petal is out of line with comfortable positioning of right leg (comfortable being straight ahead; not kicked right to the console fire wall). Space between gas and brake too narrow; if not careful car will accelerate and brake at the same time"

Anonymous, ME (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Comfort is fine. Road noise is horrible. Keep in mind, I do live in Texas where the roads are constantly under construction and all new pavement is of a very noisy type. But I cannot listen to the radio or make calls while actually driving."

Suzanne T., TX (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"good comfort in front seats"

Anonymous, MI (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"We leather seats and they are comfortable. The noise level is ok. The ride is good as we travel down any road."

Bruce S., MO (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Back seats (cloth) specifically and maybe the front cloth seats are a bit on the firm side but are reasonably supportive. Interior noise level is pretty good for an SUV/MPV but our's has some squeaks and rattles that sound to be coming from the front passenger side A-pillar and some kind of slight rattling noise from the driver's door area; maybe where the door handle is. Also you can't open the back windows too far down when the vehicle is moving because the front passenger's ears will hurt (something to do with the car's aerodynamics). Occasionally when traveling at a low speed (less than about 10 mph) a "thumping" noise can be heard and it sounds to be coming from the rear suspension. However, the car doesn't always make this sound, such as in in the summer but we might hear it in the winter months."

Robin E., UT (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Easy to enter, exit, and prepare to drive or ride. Seats can be adjusted into several positions to safely and comfortably drive or ride. Only noise in car is radio or iPhone."

Mary L., TN (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Purchased cloth seats and they aren't very forgiving. Use a cushion on long trips."

Robert K., MO (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"There is a vibrating buzz/rattle that is a real annoyance in the rear of the cabin while you are driving. I cannot find it and it drives me nuts"

Mike B., ON (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Road noise is distracting. Really loud. Sometimes I wonder if there is any insulation. Tires are original and still have good tread. Don't want to change them even to find out if this cause excessive road noise."

Marilyn S., AZ (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"comfortable height of seats, steady ride in crosswinds and bad weather, fairly quiet inside"

Bill P., LA (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Very satisfied with comfort with my 6'2 frame and my wife's 5'4 frame. Ride is comfortable"

William C., MI (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The seats have great support and are easy to clean"

Carol H., FL (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"It’s the most comfortable car I’ve ever owned. There’s also plenty of leg room for passengers. Took a long vacation trip, and never had an ache, pain or that antsy feeling from sitting too long. Outstanding comfort!"

Beth H., MO (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Excessive road noise on rough surfaced pavement."

Anonymous, TX (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Its a comfortable ride. The navigation is excellent"

GENE B., IL (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Quiet ride, responsive to road, good seat adjustment"

WILLIAM M., DE (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Base model is noisy, Sears not overly comfortable."

NANCY M., VA (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The seats bother both my husband's legs and my legs when driving or riding in the front seat. He is 6' 1' and I am 5'2'. No matter how we adjust (and there are many possible adjustments), we are still bothered. Our other vehicle does not bother us."

ALICE H., PA (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Dislike the fact that there isn't a separate climate control for the back seats."

Anonymous, IN (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"the noise level increases from high to very high when driving 35 mph and above on any road surface, smooth to rough. The turning radius is very poor."

STUART B., LA (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"I should have upgraded. Did not get all the bells and whistles."

Anonymous, PA (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"I HATE the bucket seats and the black interior."

SYLVIA W., MI (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"This model has hand operated seat adjustments and its very annoying to have use levers after having automatic features."

Anonymous, OH (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"all were good. AC could get colder faster."

DANIEL P., MO (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"I have a back and neck injury from a car accident many years ago. I need to keep the seat back in my car quite straight; it cannot slope back like most people do. It was difficult to find a car that is comfortable in this seat position. the Equinox is comfortable for me. the Forester is close, but all other cars I tried were not comfortable for me."

ROSE M., PA (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"All seats comfortable. a/c vents too low, air blows on your torso, cannot be elevated. Vehicle quiet at all road speeds. power tailgate very useful. NAV easy to use."

JOSEPH Z., NY (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"they need to move the air vents on drivers side as with hnds on wheel they are blocked, also need to put air vents in back seat"

LINDA K., WA (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"It has a lot of leg room in the back seating area."

Anonymous, OH (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Heated seats comfortable smooth ride a little road noise!!"

RAY B., WA (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Windshield columns are to broad and partially block vision."

P P., PA (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Low speed ride poor and noisy on all but very smooth roads"

Anonymous, OH (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"it is very quiet , getting in an out easier for me. the climate system works great."

CHRISTA-MANFRED L., ON (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"I shattered by knee cap and found getting in and out of a car difficult - we bought the Equinox basically for the height of the seats for ease of getting in and out and we are not disappointed - excellent"

H C., ON (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"It is a very comfortable ride......heated seats are very nice."

Anonymous, MN (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"There is no dual zone climate control, the back seats do not get enough air and passengers are often hot"

GREG A., TX (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Satisfied with everything on this vehicle"

RAYMOND M., WA (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Road noise is high. I feel the bumps more than I'd like to."

Anonymous, WI (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The seats are firm and comfortable (leather surfaces) I would like some of the trim in the car to be softer than hard plastic in some areas. The climate controls work well and the car provides a very well controlled quiet ride and there is plenty of room."

MARK Q., NJ (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"There are insufficient air ducts on the front panel"

Anonymous, NY (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Way too much road noise for the price and trim level. The I-4 engine works way too hard, lacks powers and the mileage is not that great to offset the issues. V-6 next time."

Anonymous, CA (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"It is an OK car. We like the space the car has for hauling items. It gets good gas mileage. Based on what we paid it has been a serviceable car."

Ken S., GA (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Our 2014 Chevrolet Equinox has a very spunky V6 engine, a responsive transmission, very easily adjusted power seats, and decent sight lines that make driving a pleasant experience. It is a great value because it also has easily expanded cargo space, ample passenger room, forward and rear braking and video assistance with lane alerts. The vehicle is versatile because it is small enough to park easily in parking garages and comfortable to drive while commuting and on long trips. The V6 is conserva..."

James K., SC (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"Very good value for the money"

Anonymous, ON (2014 Chevrolet Equinox)

"The turning radius is terrible. The noise abatement in the vehicle is very poor, the tire noise when driving at low city speeds its loud and is deafening at interstate speeds. The a/c is very loud on max air flow and all of the a/c duct veins are too limited in there motion to direct the flow of air where it is desired."
