The Chevrolet Equinox aims straight at the popular compact SUV segment, with its high-tech features, accomplished road manners and generous interior room. However, it doesn't quite deliver on its promise of good performance and fuel economy from its standard engine, and the interior is rather drab.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for about 329,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2020 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2019 Chevrolet Equinox owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Backup or other camera/sensors

"Intermittent outages of the camera system unrelated to weather conditions. The center stack, viewing screen was not operational at times save for a blue screen and a diagnostic warning statement. It required three (3) separate trips to the local dealer to get the camera system repaired (a camera was replaced). The repair was done under the full-factory warranty."

Steven R., MI (2019 Chevrolet Equinox Premier 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Display screen freezes up

"the entire center console froze center console frozen. took manytrips to dealer for a fix. I blame GM corporate taking a long time or a software fix"

Anonymous, (2019 Chevrolet Equinox Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"No functions of this device were available, had to shut down vehicle and restart ; a reboot."

Anonymous, CT (2019 Chevrolet Equinox Premier 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"DEALER VERY REULUCTANT TO FIX, HAD TO GET GENERAL MOTORS INVOLVED"

Anonymous, MO (2019 Chevrolet Equinox LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Display screen goes blank

"The rear camera would sometimes cause a blue screen to appear on the infotainment system when the vehicle was put into reverse. The cars was taken into the dealer several times that included diagnosis and replacement of parts including the rear facing camera. The basic problem appears to be resolved, but software issues continue that limit the functionality of the entire camera system. According to the dealer, this requires GM to issue an effective software update to resolve the problem."

Steven R., MI (2019 Chevrolet Equinox Premier 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Rear vision system failed. The dealership reprogrammed the system. It failed again so they replaced the module. When the system fails I do not have access to camera or gps. Recently the camera failed to turn off and I had no other screen options other than the camera while driving."

Nancy M., OR (2019 Chevrolet Equinox Premier 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"It was really the infotainment portion. The clock stopped working, radio continued to function. We had to pull over to the side of the road, shut everything off, open the door, wait ten minutes, open the door, start the car and check for operation. It was a nuisance and could have been a symptom of a bigger problem."

Alvis M., MI (2019 Chevrolet Equinox LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"My phone is paired with the car via bluetooth, but I cannot play music from the phone through the car. Phone commands work, but not music apps on the phone."

Chris F., MI (2019 Chevrolet Equinox Premier 1.6-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"USB ports became inoperable. Dealer had to order part, took several weeks to finally resolve."

Anonymous, MI (2019 Chevrolet Equinox Premier 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Anonymous, MI (2019 Chevrolet Equinox Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"There was no sound coming from any radio station. It was possible to tune the radio to different stations, but there was no sound at all. Also, I could not tune to any satellite radio station using the touch screen, though satellite radio stations did play sound."

Chris F., MI (2019 Chevrolet Equinox Premier 1.6-L 4 Cyl diesel)

"It was actually a chip in the paint. I tried my best to not drive it this winter and we don't even know when it happened, but there was a chip in the paint on the hood. Never had this happen to a new vehicle before. Just seems they are using a lower quality paint or something."
