The Chevrolet Equinox aims straight at the popular compact SUV segment, with its high-tech features, accomplished road manners and generous interior room. However, it doesn't quite deliver on its promise of good performance and fuel economy from its standard engine, and the interior is rather drab.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for about 329,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2020 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2020 Chevrolet Equinox owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Display screen goes blank

"Blank is incorrect. When car is first started, cold, display flickers until electronics warm up. Display was replaced but did not fix. Needs to go back for more diagnostics. Car was unavailable for a day ofdiagnostics then half a day to replace. As stated, still notfixed."

Anonymous, SC (2020 Chevrolet Equinox Premier 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"The screen goes to black, radio is silent"

Anonymous, MI (2020 Chevrolet Equinox Premier 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Radio

"the radio signal is regularly interrupted and goes silent."

Anonymous, MI (2020 Chevrolet Equinox Premier 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Squeaks or rattles

"around1200-1400 RPM the engine runs rough with a vibration that is transmitted to the passenger cabin. I had it back to the dealer and the problem is somewhat less but still very noticeable and annoying. They showed me a technical service bulletin regarding the problem but it seems that they are only installing something to mask the problem instead of an engine repair to fix it. I am making another appointment to see if they can resolve it. When I took it in the first time at around 600 miles they gave me a 2020 Equinox loaner that had the same vibration/noise at the same rpm just not as severe. The TSB indicated the problem exists in 2017-2020 vehicles with the 1.5L Turbo. I would this would have to impact long term reliability."

Anonymous, OH (2020 Chevrolet Equinox L 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)
Wind noise

"Safety systems are not refined and are annoying. Seats uncomfortable ride is rough. Steering not near as good as a 2017 equinox that I had which required replacement as a tree fell on it and totaled vehicle. 2017 was a FAR better vehicle than this 2020."

Anonymous, (2020 Chevrolet Equinox LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Highway...non stop windnoise"

Anonymous, MI (2020 Chevrolet Equinox LT 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Engine Minor

Accessory belts and pulleys, engine computer, engine mounts, engine knock or ping, oil leaks.

What Owners Say

Engine knock or ping

"This is a vibration at 1200-1400 rpm covered by my earlier comment"

Anonymous, OH (2020 Chevrolet Equinox L 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

"Loud knock when you start the car. We had a 2018 model, and had never ending problems. We traded it in, purely because we the 2018 was a lemon from day one."

Anonymous, (2020 Chevrolet Equinox Premier 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Drive System

Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, 4WD/AWD components, driveline vibration, traction control, electronic stability control (ESC), electrical failure.

What Owners Say

Electrical failure

"Could not start the vehicle. May have been caused by the car's security system. The system only failed twice. Diagnostics could not find the cause."

Anonymous, NJ (2020 Chevrolet Equinox LT 1.5-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

What Owners Say

"Brakes made noise when backing up. Returned to dealer , found broken brake disc ,was repaired this happened at 640mi.Dealer said disc was broken when installed at factory.Car assembled in Mexico."

Anonymous, PA (2020 Chevrolet Equinox LT 2.0-L 4 Cyl turbo)

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say
