This version of the Chevrolet Impala was competitive in its class, but there were better choices. While ride and handling are sound, they lag behind those of many competitors. On the other hand, the revised interior is comfortable and has logical controls. Still, wind noise is notable and the engine isn't particularly refined.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

"Handles and accelerates extremely well"

Janee K., IN (2009 Chevrolet Impala)

"Accelerates quickly and handles great. One of the better mid-size cars I have driven."

Eric J., MO (2009 Chevrolet Impala)

"Big problem with the traction control system. When the car wa 8 years old with 130000 miles, that’s when I kept having problems with the traction control. It took 5 trips back to the dealership costing a total of $2000 to fix the problem and the message still comes on occasionally."

Anonymous, NY (2009 Chevrolet Impala)

"Good handling in traffic and on the open road"

Richard J., OH (2009 Chevrolet Impala)

"Excellent acceleration and handles very well."

Robert C., NH (2009 Chevrolet Impala)

"Drives and handles well, but needs more than 4 speed transmission for better acceleration and responsiveness."

Anonymous, MI (2009 Chevrolet Impala)

"Love this car. However the blending door motors fail quite frequently thou not terribly expensive to fix, its still a annoying problem."

Anonymous, MI (2009 Chevrolet Impala)

"Car has great acceleration, but handling is just okay. Understeer when pushing it into corners."

Anonymous, CA (2009 Chevrolet Impala)

"When we first looked at purchase of this vehicle, I was looking for the larger 3.9L engine. The salesperson said we should test drive the 3.5L and I was amazed at the power and responsiveness of this offering. After all the miles we've put on the Impala, the engine has had absolutely no issues and still has all the original power. I always use Mobil 1 oil."

JESS J., NE (2009 Chevrolet Impala)

"comfortable ride, good acceleration"

EDWARD B., MI (2009 Chevrolet Impala)

"Turn radius is excellent- pick up on passing very good- Very comfortable ride, low maintenance,"

H K., PA (2009 Chevrolet Impala)

What Owners Say

"Repairs all the time"

Anonymous, IA (2009 Chevrolet Impala)

"Car rides smoothly and has great road feel. My biggest complaints are that the AC has a stale odor that lingers despite many filter changes. Also, the rear locks randomly stop working, they mostly don't work but now and again one of them will start working. Very frustrating. Quote to repair $800"
