Striking styling distinguishes the Chevrolet Malibu, complete with sumptuous curves that evoke the luxurious Audi A7. Beyond the style there is true substance, with a comfortable ride, an almost absurdly quiet cabin, and undaunting controls. And, compared to the previous model, the rear seat now has more room. But there are several form and functional setbacks that result from this swoopy look, most notably visibility.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"fast enough for me handles fine"

RICHARD E., WV (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"It practically drives itself."

NONDA M., ID (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Great acceleration, terrifi handling, a pleasure to drive"

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Handling is excellent, precise, straight-arrow. No land-yacht leaning and dodging on cornering or emergency handling, that I've noticed. I'm very impressed with the acceleration, very strong when you need it, even though it's only a 1.5L engine, and I came from a 3.8L vehicle! Engine noise under normal driving is almost imperceptible. Engine noise is louder under hard acceleration (merging, passing), but seems mostly due to the turbocharger coming to life (this is NOT a knock). It can definit"

THOMAS C., MI (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Great acceleration from small engine. Handling much more secure than previous Malibu (2004)"

HERBERT M., WA (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"I am less satisfied with the cruise control. It has too much variation once Set."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"it is a 2016 limited,2.5l eng,it gets 35 mpg on highway,handles well,& is quiet"

RALPH R., MN (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"the acceleration is quite touchy - the car tends to jerk a lot if you're not careful with the pedal. more than the other Malibu I drove before."

DEB R., MN (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"The hybrid drives like a full electric car. Smooth, linear acceleration. Great brake feel and steering. This car handles like an American car. I’m tired of driving jittery, short wheelbase Japanese cars."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Great handling super accelaration"

Anonymous, MN (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"excellent power, handles extremely well."

Anonymous, PA (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

Anonymous, VA (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Looks good,has good acceration"

Anonymous, MI (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"2.0 turbo 4 feels like v6, great acceleration virtually no turbo lag. 19i n rims let in a few more bumps but hug the road for a car its size"

Anonymous, MA (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"The Malibu has a 4 cylinder with a turbo. It has excellent power when I need it. The handling is very good."

R B., CA (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"good for a small engine"

Anonymous, MD (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Very smooth, comfortable and quiet. I have the larger engine (2.0L turbo) so response is quite good but gas mileage does not seem to suffer."

"Peppy, quiet, reasonable steering feel."

Anonymous, PA (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"It's basically a smooth ride."

Michael I., MI (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Amazing acceleration for a small 4 cylinder engine."

Rodney H., NY (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"I am very impressed with the performance of the Malibu's 4 cylinder engine and still gives almost 31 + mpg. Of course it can't compete with a high performance car but it is more than ample for normal driving. I have driven some cars in it's class that were given high marks by your testers, only to be unimpressed or only slightly impressed. Strangely you haven't asked me to discuss it's styling. I was quite surprised by your reviewers description as "swoopy styling" Really? This is from a professional auto reviewer? Yet other cars with similar lines weren't called out. There are many, but Tesla comes to mind. I am not always a GM fan. I often meet with guys who are car buffs and even they ridiculed that comment."

Arthur M., NY (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"great gas mileage handles well OK acceloration"

Thomas W., IN (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"I have only good things to say on this topic."

Thomas S., ON (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Good pickup and handling."

Anonymous, WI (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Very fast car with the turbocharged 2.0L engine. And great mileage to boot. Only drawback is premium gasoline but it's worth it. Not as crazy about the handling in high speed turns but it's acceptable."

Robert L., CA (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Low profile tires are horrible, one flat, one side wall tare, and two blowouts,"

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"It handles wonderfully"

Anonymous, OH (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"adequate acceleration, handles well for the base package. well controlled, nice brakes"

Anonymous, WI (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"good handling and very good acceleration."

C G., NY (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Turbo engine accelerates remarkably well for a 4 cylinder engine. Never a worry when pulling onto a major highway or when passing on a two lane road."

David F., PA (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Good: ride and fuel economy is better than expected. Bad, Climate control system is frustrating to deal with."

Anonymous, MI (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Hate start stop. Does not perform right."

William M., MI (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"It will pass everything on the road but the Highway Patrol."

Sandra C., AL (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

Gerald W., NY (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

Eddie C., TX (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"The ride is like you're floating along on a cloud. Tolerable road noise on broken, bumpy roads. Seats are comfortable. Rear seat has ample head and leg room for 6'4" individual, however, the seat is rather shallow so, there isn't much leg support and might get uncomfortable on long trips. The A/C functions well, and cool air distribution is good, though it takes somewhat longer for the back seat to get thoroughly cooled."

THOMAS C., MI (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Very quiet in passenger cabin. You can't hear the engine running at idle. The legroom and headroom are much better than my previous 2013 Malibu"

Anonymous, CT (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"The power seats have a memory setting. The leather on these seats make them very comfortable. The climate control is automatic. I can set a temperature, and it maintains that setting. The noise level is low, except for noisy roads. The ride is very comfortable."

R B., CA (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Excessive road noise. Varies with road surface, but is distracting at all levels. Groved roads as in some freeways are unbearable. Need ear plugs at times. Can't hear audio sysyem. Ride is stiff and jarring on all but the newest hard surface roads."

STEVEN K., IL (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Great ride, room, quiet, very nice ride. Lots of room in back. Big trunk and has a spare. Wow."

WILLIAM M., MI (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"noise, not quiet like CR said it was."

Anonymous, VA (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Seats look and feel great (got leather). Ride is buttery smooth and blissfully quiet - reminds me of my aunt's early 1980's Pontiac Parisienne - plush and quiet."

DAVID W., ON (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Rough, abrupt downshift on braking in Premier model (2.0 Turbo, 8 speed transmission)."

Anonymous, IN (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"I had a difficult time getting use to and understanding the controls for the seats, warnings, all the new technology. There is a lot of technical things to know about this car because it has all the "bells and whistles""

Anonymous, TX (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Front seat comfort is poor overall, seat cushion is not competitive. Manual adjust seats are not optimized for all driver variations/sizes."

Anonymous, MI (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"easier to get in and out vs 2013 model"

Anonymous, NY (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"seat comfort bad"

COLLIN S., IL (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"I commute 1 hour each way everyday. The Malibu has enough controls for the drivers seat that I can adjust it so that I am comfortable. My back never hurts when I drive. I am 6' 1" and can move the seat back to a comfortable spot as well. In short, I feel good when I get to where I am going."

Alan R., MI (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"seats are very comfortable, love the heated or air cooled seats"

Anonymous, NC (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Seats are comfortable but car has much road noise."

Steven R., TX (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"The seat controls are easily accessable and have given me no trouble. Outside noises are barely audible giving it very easy to carry on conversations. The ride is very smooth and it handles bumps nicely."

Thomas S., ON (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Super quiet and smooth ride, as long the the sunroof shade is closed. If the shade is open, there is noticeable wind noise. The seals need to be better."

Justin M., MI (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"very good"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"The car is very quiet. The seats provide very good support. It is a very smooth ride."

Dean W., MI (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Have a clicking in drivers seat when making turns, back to dealer twice, not fixed yet."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"great ride and handling combination. plenty of room."

C G., NY (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"I’m 6’2‿ and the seats fit me. They are wide and comfortable. Lots of room for my knees and elbows. The car is very quiet and drives as smooth as a full electric car (I have a hybrid}"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Seats are comfortable. Cabin noise is low."

Mark R., IL (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"quiet, smooth ride, seats are a little on the smaller side"

Anonymous, WI (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Seats are very comfortable for long rides"

Anonymous, MN (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Although the seats are comfortable, we find that the cooled seats are not as comfortable as seats without cooling. The car does tend to be somewhat noisy while traveling (could be the tires). I find that on some roads, I have to turn up the radio if I want to hear it."

Judy D., MN (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"I have the Premier Malibu. The seats are very comfortable on short trips or longer trips. I have the power seats and I can find the right position for me. It also has memory seat controls."

R B., CA (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Good driving position for all family members. Ride is sporty and a little bit rough on rough roads."

Gary E., MD (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Very comfortable Very roomy.front and back.Big car ride. Smooth acceleration. Good braking power.Fantastic highway gas mileage."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Some difficult getting in and out of car"

Anonymous, WI (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"quite ride...comfortable seats"

Thomas W., IN (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Noise & ride due to 19‿ tires"

Len W., FL (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Very quiet car with smooth ride. The leather seats are nice and comfortable."

David W., ON (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Quiet on the road, and comforta le ride.. Love the acceleratioin of the hybrid engine."

Donald V., CA (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Comfortable to drive but have a click in seat when making a turn, either right or left"

Anonymous, NY (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Love the air vented leather seats and heated. Multiple settings to aid in comfort. Longest trip was 4 hours of driving and did not get uncomfortable, even at 6-2. Have rode in the rear seat which also provides lots of leg room, but the 19 in tires on the Premier seem to allow a little more road noise."

Jim J., MI (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"fun to drive with the premier package"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Great value premiere trim ..2.0 turbo feels like v6.. lane departure, emergency braking, adaptive cruise, heated vented leather, skyscape sunroof.. so much more..all the features possible. Aggressive style with alternate 19 in wheels, much iced for less money and modern looks i and out compared to quirky looks of Toyota or Nissan. Comparable to 2018 accord and 2018 mazda 6 but Same features not avail in 2016 on those vehicles"

Jana E., MI (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"The car is unbelievable! I can't believe it has only 4 cylinders-the pick up on the highway is amazing!"

C G., NY (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"The Malibu is a very nice car to drive. Handling is very good. The entertainment system is very good especially Android Auto capability. However the OnStar is too expensive as well as additional internet connection. I wish it had built in navigation, however Android Auto is used as navigation, but it does use some data. The styling is excellent."

PETER C., NJ (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Side and rear styling are excellent, but the front looks very bland"

RICHARD R., ME (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"allgood"

JOHN P., NY (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Excellent styling"

Anonymous, BC (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Interior dashboard feels clunky. Like it was designed for elderly people who need big knobs and buttons."

Anonymous, OH (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Great styling and good looking."

WILLIAM M., MI (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"Fantastically beautiful styling - GM outdid themselves"

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Chevrolet Malibu)

"I have told GM in the past that I have no use for OnStar and would rather not have it, but my opinion has not prevailed, and I am told that it is impossible to purchase a new GM vehicle without OnStar. The OnStar included with this vehicle requires that there be an antenna shaped like a shark fin in the rear middle of the roof. I think this really detracts from the appearance of the car."
