The Silverado, and its twin the GMC Sierra, has been a good choice for years, and the redesigned 2014 model is an even better performer. With its overhaul, this new model has landed some solid punches in the ongoing pickup wars. Handling is more carlike than in most others. The cabin is as quiet as a luxury car's.

"radio goes off, lights on display go off. radio remains on even after key is removed from the ignition"

Anonymous, TX (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"The radio would cause a click in the speaker system when the driver door was opened before starting. Upon starting, the radio screen would take 15-20 seconds to display anything, and then it would either display FM 87.9 and produce static in the speakers, or the radio would reboot 2 or 3 times. The dealer kept the truck 3 days and downloaded a software update to the audio system. This has fixed that problem. They also had to apply a software patch to the engine ECM to go with the upgraded software in the audio/controls system."

Gary S., NC (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
Speakers

"I rarely listen to the radio, but my wife does when she's in my truck and she noticed that the speaker on the passenger side was barely/not working. At my last oil change they were suppose to order the replacement speakers, but I've already had to call a month later to ask again."

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Coolers and lines

"The truck leaked transmission fluid from fitting and line to cooler. When it failed t was on the road and a good amount of fluid was lost Took a short time to fix but with the fluid being so low i worry about the transmission holding up"

John R., CO (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)
Rough shifting

"Transmission downshift points are set too low which causes hesitation and vibration at low speeds, especially in areas with speed limits around 40 mph. Dealer says that is the way the transmission is designed to work. Also, making a turn after a stop light where the vehicle is sort of coasting around the corner, the transmission pauses to downshift after the accelerator has been pushed to force a downshift. This is the 6 speed transmission which operates just like the last one on a 2014 Silverado."

Anonymous, OK (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Kicking when coming to stop"

Anonymous, GA (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"Shifting is anything but smooth"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Excessive clunk going into Drive!"

Ralph B., ON (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Shifts are hard and sudden under low speeds with clunking noise but does not throw a check engine code. The NHTSA #10081880 and Manufacturer Communication #16NA019. This is very common but many dealers will ignore with the response of "The vehicle is operating as intended""

Anonymous, FL (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country 5.3-L V8)

"Shift points were inconsistent, shifting late at high rpm and sometimes a hard clunking shift when it did shift"

Anonymous, MD (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Transmission is absolutely terrible. The 6-Speed is rough and clunky. Makes terrible noises and rough shifts almost every time I drive it. I have owned a 2014 & 2015 Ram and I will never again buy a silverado"

Anonymous, IL (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"When traveling at low speeds transmission has very rough shifting, mine is the 8 speed automatic transmission."

Alvin P., TN (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"Vibration problem . Truck has fuel management system any time it's I 4 cylinder mode it vibrates and shudders . Brought it back to dealer 4 times they keep telling me it's normal . Constantly vibrates . . Calls gm they where useless with customer service ."

Neil B., MA (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Custom 5.3-L V8)
Transmission computer

"Problem is not resolved which is a transmission force lurching the truck forward. Always occurs when coming to a stop usually when under 5-10mph. Dealer explained it to be the computer searching for gear change during downshift and causing a forward jump. This jump feels like an impact from the rear as if I were in a minor traffic accident (enough to snap my head backwards, but not enough to cause injury). It happens about once a month and it's approximately 1-3 times per incident. The 1-3 times usually happens with the first surge/jump being violent and the next one or two being minor or slight. The next 1 or 2 usually will occur within minutes or up to the next day from the first. Mostly it only occurs one jump per incident. The fortunate thing about this anomaly, is it always happens when braking. Although I am aware of this anomaly, it always catches me off guard!!"

Anonymous, OH (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"i have to puch in the control to back out of the engine brake going down hill"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
Rust

"The Running boards chrome was coming off...lots"

Dave K., ON (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"At the top of the wheel wells on the bedside there is some surface rust on both sides. I only noticed this about 2 months ago while cleaning tar off it. The truck was purchased in the fall of 2016, so it's not even 4 years old yet, so I'm a little surprised by this."

Anonymous, PA (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

Transmission Major

Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, clutch replacement.

What Owners Say

Torque converter

"at about 50K miles the truck started to shudder when driven at highway speed on a smooth and level surface. The shudder would come and go. I discovered on the internet that this is a problem with the 2016 5.3 8 speed Silverado. I took it to the dealer and after a test drive he confirmed the shudder had a Service Bulletin on it. He remarked he got about 6 of these a week. They flushed the transmission and torque converter with fluid a time or two and reset the computer for the transmission. The shudder has not come back since this warranty service. The truck shifted smoother and at better shift points after the service. The shudder is a known issue in these trucks. I hope it does not return as I am a few miles away from my warranty expiring."

Robert B., AR (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country 5.3-L V8)

"Vibration at low speeds -- flushed the fluid twice, changed to a different fluid once. Apparently, there is a service bulletin on this, but no resolution."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

"Oil had to be replaced."

C M., TX (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 6.2-L V8)
Transmission rebuild or replacement

"We purchased the truck with high miles on it, but a full maintenance log. We had the transmission fluid changed after we purchased it. 18 months later it started to shift rough. When we had it checked, it was found that the torque converter was completely gone."

Anonymous, WI (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"Transmission started to fail during a long road trip, would not accelerate, lost high gears, and had to be replaced"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

"I noticed the transmission reshooting while driving uphill. I continued to notice more shifting. I took it to my local dealer and the transmission needed replacing due to it failing. I was replaced under warranty"

Anonymous, AR (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"At 59,950 miles I pulled up to a stop sign. The truck engine quickly died as I stopped. it was sudden. The engine started immediately. I continued driving as I was on the way to a very important appointment. I was concerned it would die again but it didn't. On returning home I opened the hood an the belt on the A/C Compressor was off. I retrieved it from the engine area. It was broken and had been very hot. I looked at the pulleys and there was melted belt material on them. The A/C Compressor had locked up completely and that caused the engine to die. I put a wrench on it and it would not turn at all. Online I see the GM A/C Compressors on these trucks fail with some regularity. I took the truck to my mechanic. He is familiar with the situation and said the condensing coil had to be replaced to. The internal areas in the tubing are very small and any debris from the compressor will stop up the coil. I take it in for repair in two days. I am expecting a $1,500 repair. It is out of warranty. I would have changed the compressor myself but I don't have the proper refrigerant servicing equipment. Very disappointing. The first time in my 71 years I have had a compressor fail in a car or truck."

Robert B., AR (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country 5.3-L V8)
Automatic climate control

"the control was stuck on high heat took 14 days to get part then a day to fix it"

John R., CO (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 6.2-L V8)

"A/C comes on at all times even in the winter when your trying to heat cabin or defrost windshield it always comes on... Do Not Like this"

Anonymous, CT (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Custom 5.3-L V8)

"The controls will not change tempature it is always on hot. Got to get it fixed out of warranty before it gets warm"

John R., CO (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 6.2-L V8)
Condenser

"One day i turned on ac to defog windows during the rain and realized that ac wasn't coolin anymore. After a quick check i found out that system was out of refrigerant due to a refrigerant leak in ac condenser. After quick internet search i found out that this leak caused by faulty condenser design wich is well documented and GM is well aware of it, but when i contacted GM they refuse it to accept liability and cover repair cost since vehicle had over 40,000 miles on odometer and past manufacturer warranty. I had to pay over $1,200 to have it repaired."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

Drive System

Driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, 4WD/AWD components, driveline vibration, traction control, electronic stability control (ESC), electrical failure.

What Owners Say

Anonymous, IL (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
Driveshaft or axle

"the right front wheel bearing went bad due to lack of lubrication during assembly. Was fixed under warranty but took 2 days"

John R., CO (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)
Transfer case

"A constant clicking noise regardless of drive selected/ 2WD or 4WD. Chevy mechanic told me the noise is due to a change in the type of drive chain in the transfer case"

Anonymous, MD (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)

Brakes

Antilock system (ABS), parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, rotors, pulsation or vibration, squeaking, brake failure or wear.

"A rock lodged into the rear brake and scored the pad and rotor. Replaced same"

Anonymous, AR (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)
Regular brake failure

"The braking system randomly loses its power assist function. This only lasts a few seconds, but accidents happen in seconds. I am notifying the dealer (this will be a warranty repair). I have read on the internet of this being a GM truck problem since 2014 so hopefully will be a simple fix for the dealer."

Gary S., NC (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT 5.3-L V8)
Rotors

"rotors warped at 30K miles. Pads were like new. GM+Dealer replaced at no cost while technically out of warranty"

What Owners Say

Shocks or struts

"Unknown noise in front end that was traced to a defective shock. Both front shocks were replaced under warranty and the problem was corrected."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 6.2-L V8)
Steering wheel vibration

"Truck shimmies at 70 mph; took vehicle to selling dealer within a week of purchase; was told by mechanic that Chevrolet had equipped their light truck lines with passenger vehicle tires rather than truck tires to improve gas mileage and there was little they could do to correct the problem. Still have the vibration at about 70 mph; when the truck sits for a long period, the tires have flat portions that do not go away until the tires completely warm up; ahimmy is very bad until truck is driven 15 to 20 miles at highway speeds. I do not know if problem is fixed by replacing the tires with properly rated truck tires."

Anonymous, (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3-L V8)
Wheel balance

"Dealer can never seem to get the tires balanced. Truck vibrates"

Marvland B., TX (2016 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 High Country 5.3-L V8)

Fuel System

Check engine light, sensors (includes O2 or oxygen sensor), emission control devices (includes EGR), engine computer, engine computer, fuel cap, fuel gauge/sender, fuel injection system, fuel pump, fuel leaks, stalling or hesitation.

What Owners Say

Emission control devices (includes EGR)

"P0440 error code due to clogged vacuum system. CHEVROLET placed the system on top of fuel tank where dust and dirt can collect. They claim not their issue but when parts are replaced they are relocated to a new location on the vehicle. $800 later for me it's functional.
