The Volt is an electric car for drivers who don't want to be limited by battery range. It usually allows you to drive gas-free for 35 miles, however the exact number depends on weather and driving style. In our testing, it ranged from 20 to 50 miles. When the battery is depleted, a backup gasoline engine kicks in to keep the electric motor running. This allows you to keep driving for up to 315 more miles before refueling.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

"Very quiet and soft ride. Accelerates quickly in sport mode."

Anonymous, NJ (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"the acceleration is super"

DICK H., MI (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Quiet, peppy acceleration, zero engine vibration. I refill the fuel tank every six months driving 35 miles per day average"

Anonymous, CT (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Drive over 900 mile on electric at a time. Only use gas when I head out of town on trips longer than 50 miles. It is amazing in city driving, I keep in low gear and it almost stops itself at stop lights. Everyone should drive this kind car! And it is very quiet. I feel sorry for big diesel pick-up trucks driving in heavy traffic."

JON S., CO (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Fun to drive, smooth acceleration, and it's electric!"

LUCIEN L., WV (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"After owning two Prius autos the past seven years, the Volt is a heck of a lot more fun and more practical."

THOMAS H., FL (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"The only thing I would change is to make it turn on a dime like my old Honda Accord!"

DIANE T., FL (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"This car is fast and smooth to drive from a dead stop. It is very solid at high speed on expressways. The steering is solid and sure. Suspension is supple and the ride is very comfortable."

CHARLES M., FL (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"handles great! quiet!"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"quick and quiet acceleration very good turning radius"

JIM D., FL (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Easy to accelerate; easy to pass other vehicles; easy to park because of its size."

C K., KS (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Wonderful acceleration!"

Anonymous, FL (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Electric torque very useful merging, handling not so great due to the low resistance tires and battery weight."

JOE B., CA (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Handles really well and lots of power when passing and when needed."

William L., AB (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Nimble handling, strong acceleration, great braking. Low center of gravity to hug Road."

Drew M., CA (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"The acceleration is very poor in the Volt. It is great and peppy on electric but once it switches over to gas, it can't handle anything but flat roads in town. I get warning notifications and horrible loud noises when trying to climb the hilly roads of California. It sounds like a lawnmower whining and can't keep up with the other traffic on the road."

Rachel P., CA (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Handles great! Off the line is impressive. Passing ability is fantastic."

Stephen E., CT (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"The acceleration is good on electric or gasoline. Handling is quite good too."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Completely transparent feel between electric and gasoline propulsion"

Thomas H., CA (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Acceleration is very good, the electric motor is fantastic. The cr tends to under steer whichis not so good. That plus the poor performing headlights are the two major complaints I have about the car"

Felipe Z., CT (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Being an electric car, the acceleration is surprisingly good - much better than most ICE vehicles. The handling is as good as any car I've driven, mostly Toyota."

Anonymous, FL (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"For a heavy clunky family car, the acceleration, especially 0-60 is surprisingly good. That is an additional value of the fully electric motor. Bit, best, IN California you get to use the HOV lane!"

M S., CA (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"The instant torque is amazing. Accelerating onto the freeway is effortless. The car is heavier than a comparable gas vehicle, but the battery gives it a low center of gravity so it corners very well. The electric steering is very responsive. I actually enjoy my commutes now."

Michael E., WA (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Very fast off line, flat in corner"

Terry R., CA (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Amazing in every way. great acceleration fantastic fuel economy solid feel"

Wes K., CT (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"The electric vehicle is at time too quite. Pedestrians dont know I am there."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"An even better sports car than the 2015 that looks good too. I can bend necks on acceleration. No transmission, no gears."

Gary C., MA (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Acceleration and handling are excellent. The fuel economy is outstanding."

Anonymous, MI (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Outstanding"

William B., TX (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Accelerates quickly and handlea well in traffic."

Jan P., MI (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"It handles very well - good acceleration."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"enough power to merge with busy traffic"

Anonymous, MD (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Great acceleration with the electric motor."

Anonymous, MO (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"The Volt does not have great acceleration at high speeds but it is adequate for merging on the highway, etc. The acceleration from a stand still to about 30 MPH is very fast and it happens without engine noise."

Thomas L., CT (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"exceptional acceleration for a small car. It handles very well."

David L., MN (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Acceleration and the great handling. The car is a so fun to drive! Like a go cart."

Anonymous, TN (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Acceleration is fast with no lag."

Anonymous, CO (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"I generally get about 50 miles on a charge and find this vehicle to be very economical to drive on a daily basis, AND LOVE that i get carpool stickers with this car"

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Handles very well. Tight turns and good acceleration."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Not quite enough leg room for 6'2" driver. Seats are a trifle narrow. Climate controls (like all dash controls) hard to decipher/access."

Anonymous, WI (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Controls are a bit confusing. You have to turn on the radio to use the navigation system. Seat warmer switches are located near others causing them to be turned on when not needed."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"The seats are too thin for my wife."

LANDON O., AZ (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Rides extremely well. Very little wind noise. Ride is comfortable and pleasant"

JAN P., MI (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Seats are not supportive nor comfortable for this price car seats fail to meet value"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Seats fit like a glove, climate control the air conditioner should have vents for the back seats.their is no noise in the cabin and the ride great."

GLENN S., OH (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"The ride noise is more than I expected, especially when the engine has to run."

JOHN R., MN (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Very poor visibility outside. very cramped back seat. It's a 2-seater with a minimal back seat. Needs more EV range and faster charging capability so I can drive purely electric more."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"The car should have come equipped with heated steering wheel since heating cabin eats up so much battery power."

Anonymous, MO (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Sporty and fun but the seats for long drives are terribly uncomfortable"

Anonymous, TN (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"seats are not well padded and there is not nearly enough legroom for me. Ride is somewhat harsh due to low profile tires and high tire pressure--but that's a good tradeoff for fuel economy, which I appreciate."

Anonymous, WI (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"seat very comfortable, love heated seats, very quiet ride"

Anonymous, TN (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Very comfortable, nice leather"

Anonymous, WV (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Volt is uncomfortable to sit in and offers very poor outside visibility. I don't feel safe driving it because there are so many blind spots, especially forward to the left and right due to sloped, thick A-pillar"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"This is really a two passenger car. Very difficult to put adults in the rear seat."

James, MI (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"The seat comfort could be better Noise and ride are fine"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"The comfort in the Volt is horrible. It cause my husband a serious back injury due to the lack of ergonomic seats and positioning of the seat structure. In addiiton, when I drive it the seats cause my feet and toes to go numb. The ergoninomics and lack of lumbar support os very poor."

Rachel P., CA (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Very quiet ride and seats feel great even though manual adjustment"

Terry R., CA (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Road noise is higher than it could be. When in gasoline mode, the road noise combined with the engine make for an uncomfortably high noise level."

A C., CA (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Being an electric car, it's silent. The seats are perfectly comfortable, the controls are readily accessible, and the ride is excellent."

Anonymous, FL (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Very comfortable car and quiet. Great car."

William L., AB (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Ride and noise level is good, but legroom is poor"

David B., MS (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"For a small car it is very comfortable. It is very quiet. Foot room in the back seat is tight."

David L., MN (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"I guess I have what qualify as long legs and the legroom is a couple of inches too short. The 2015 model is simply a bit cramped both for the driver and rear seat occupants."

J S., WA (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"A little hard to get into for anyone over 6 foot."

Matt W., FL (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"7500 federal rebate for the volt is amazing."

Anonymous, NJ (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Rebates provided by federal, state and my company made the value extraordinary. I would not feel the same if I had to pay the sticker price."

Anonymous, CA (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Overall, I am saving over 600$ per month. My regular maintenance is occurring every year instead of every quarter. Everything is a great customer experience."

DANIEL R., QC (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"This is a roomy, full size vehicle. For the lease price we have a great looking, nice riding, energy efficient vehicle. The electricity cost is minimal compared to what we would be paying in gas."

JAN P., MI (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"The bonus was that, in California, I also got stickers that allows me to drive in the carpool lane"

Anonymous, CA (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"I get 219 mpg in a car that rides extremely well, is very comfortable and has nearly every safety feature. I think this is a very under-rated vehicle."

MATT W., FL (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Made choice of Volt over Prius. I made wrong choice."

Anonymous, AZ (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"With all the rebates and government incentives, I bought my Volt for less than $20K, less than the cost of most gas powered compact cars. For that money I bought a fun to drive, cool car that cuts down on my trips to the gas station."

Thomas L., CT (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Mileage and comfort. Great in City driving, ease of entry and comfortable interior."

Jan P., MI (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"More than 300 miles range. Great fuel mileage (75 mpg combined) 40 miles battery range."

Drew M., CA (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Plug in with 40 plus miles everyday used is great, as well as the vehicle being green stickie eligible to allow single occupant vehicle to use carpool lanes!!!"

Michael S., CA (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Fuel economy of this vehicle enables significantly reduced purchases of gas - it has great fuel economy."

Anonymous, MI (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Great, smooth electric acceleration. Brilliant concept of using the electric engine for my normal commute (I've saved over $12,000 in gas, net electricity since I bought it), but not feeling limited by the battery when I want to drive a distance. All for a reasonable price."

Brad M., CA (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Value rapidly depreciates. After one year resell value fell $7,500 or tax credit amount plus another 15 to 20 percent"

David B., MS (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"We got the volt as a year end lease at a very attractive rate. Best deal i have ever made on a new car. Ad it has required no maintenance and been flaw free. With or driving we'vee gotten over 90 miles per gallon of fossil fuel."

M S., CA (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"This car is paying for itself. I can get to work and back during the summer for 250 mpg plus (less in the winter). I don't have range anxiety. I fill up maybe once a month and it's usually less than $20. This is my commuter car and I plan on owning it for at least 10 years. I plug in when I get home and have a full battery when I wake up for work just from a normal 120v outlet. Plus I'm not putting the extra miles on my truck. I'm extremely happy with the value of the car."

Michael E., WA (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Fed and state discounts plus Chevy discounts equals a fantastic car for under $19000. Factor in the lack of repairs and electricity costs and I am running this car for about $30 a month."

Gary C., MA (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"Very good lease price. Well tailored interior and exterior for price. Good mileage value - electric bills are reasonable and minimal gas usage."

Jan P., MI (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"This car has saved us a ton of money on gas and oil changes, because of the battery use. It's great when we go to the mall and can get a parking spot at the charging station, because we don't use any gas at all. It's fun to drive and you can't hear it coming."

Mary G., OH (2015 Chevrolet Volt)

"For an electric vehicle, there is no off-the-grid anxiety. Great price and great looks"

Vincent C., NY (2015 Chevrolet Volt)
