The attention-getting PT Cruiser is essentially a front-wheel drive wagon, although its taller height gives it more of an SUV look, as well as a slightly higher driving position. The Cruiser offers attractively flexible interior packaging, but is limited by its powertrain and total cargo capacity.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

David L., ON (2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser)

"It oversteers in a tight turn when accelerating, which could be hazardous."

Anonymous, TX (2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser)

"Only 150 horsepower so not real fast at acceleration but we've driven it for 150000 miles with doing just scheduled maintenance. We've had to change the rt front axle bearing once. No other major issues."

MARK D., ID (2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser)

"Sits up high, has lots of room inside, handles easily"

DUANE B., WA (2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser)

"Standard 4 cylinder engine is somewhat underpowered."

Anonymous, AZ (2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser)

"I really like the handling and find the acceleration adequate. However, it definitely isn't a powerful car. It has the base (non-turbo) engine."

DAVID L., ON (2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser)

"Great handling, exceptional power & acceleration. Turning radius is not exceptional, but adequate."

THEODORE A., CA (2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser)

"My Dream Cruiser GT has a 2.4 turbo charged engine and a 5-speed manual transmission. For city and open road driving it offers all the performance I need. It has quick response and all the pleasure of a true drivers car. The high seats provide good visibility which is another plus."

MICHAEL M., CA (2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser)

"Car could use a little more horsepower and steering and handling are somewhat dead with no secure feel."

W M., OH (2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser)

"Poor turning radius makes it very difficult to parallel park."

Roland F., WI (2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser)

"Snappy acceleration and positive handling"

Anonymous, MS (2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser)

Anonymous, KS (2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser)

"GT model has 220 hp high output turbo, 0-60 in 7 seconds. Plenty of power, often doesn't downshift on uphill grades. very good stopping power from 4 wheel disc brakes, and upgraded suspension from lower models contributes to almost sports car handling. Good tires contribute significantly, Michelin Pilot Sports. Prior Continentals were high performance and were excellent with an even softer ride, but somewhat fragile sidewalls."

Richard E., CA (2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser)

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Noise level is pretty good for a modestly priced car. Seats are comfortable and ride is good. It has the manual transmission that I want along with a good compliment of up-market features for a car of that era (2004). Up-market manual transmission cars are getting hard to find."

David L., ON (2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser)

"Seat elevation and car height is ideal for getting in and out and people age."

Anonymous, PA (2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser)

"Very upright and comfortable seating position. 13 years old and everything still looks great inside. Great visibility. A smooth but not mushy ride and handling."

Jerry C., MO (2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser)

"Cargo flexibility is outstanding. Ride is a bit noisy, though."

Anonymous, QC (2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser)

"It has very good lumbar support for a short person, and good head height for a tall person."

NANCY M., MD (2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser)

"I transport a lot of seniors. Sedans are too low. SUVs are too high. The PT Cruiser is the best I've found."

Anonymous, CA (2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser)

"I am quite satisfied with seats, climate control and ride. I am also quite satisfied with the noise level. It is quite good for a low priced car and I take issue with those who complain that they are noisy."

DAVID L., ON (2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser)

"It is noisier than I'd like."

Anonymous, TX (2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser)

"I have back problems. The PT Cruiser is higher off the ground than many past cars I have owner, It is easy for more to get in and out of the car which save strain on my back. The seats also have very good back support."

R M., CA (2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser)

"Seats are leather, with seat heater, comfortable. bottom seat cushion could be slightly longer for better thigh support. Car is very solidly constructed, almost truck-like, no rattles or flexing or squeaks. Ride on the GT model is smooth and compliant, it is upgraded from the lower models. New Michelin Pilot Sport tires help as well."

Richard E., CA (2004 Chrysler PT Cruiser)
