With its Hemi V8, this version of the Ram is among the quickest trucks we've tested. But it's also one of the thirstiest, averaging a paltry 11 mpg. A jittery ride and cumbersome handling hurt the Ram's overall score, as did the barely adequate brakes. The cabin is a bit noisy, and access is very difficult. On the plus side, our Ram had a large cargo bed and tows more than 8,000 pounds.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

"Bought the 2004 Dodge Ram from private party who took exceptional care of the truck. We have owned the truck for almost four years and except for minor maintenance items, no repairs required. There was a National recall on both air bags which has been completed. The truck is stylish, comfortable, responsive. It has the 5.7 v8, plenty of power. The gas mileage is about 18 (on the road, 13 in town) could be a bit better."

What Owners Say

"We like the V hood. Rides great, but the cab noise could be lowered. Don't turn the Ram into a square box ford"

Anonymous, ON (2004 Dodge Ram 1500)

"This truck is really comfortable. We replaced the factory seat covers with leather covers, but they're really comfy seats. Even the back seat is comfy. We've taken long trips & didn't have any problem sitting for 500 miles."
