Ford C-MAX Change Vehicle

The C-Max is an appealing all-around package, combining the fuel efficiency of its standard hybrid powertrain with the practicality of a five-door hatchback design. Based on the Ford Focus, the C-Max packs an impressive amount of room and utility into a small footprint. Its tall stance and low entry height make for easy access, and the cabin is airy and spacious.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Owner Satisfaction with:

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"I have used this car for daily freeway commuting as well as longer trips. The acceleration is amazing, and outperforms the older Prius and Nissan hydrids that I have driven."

Anonymous, UT (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"zippy, great handling at high speeds enjoy driving in town"

Jennifer J., TX (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"Acceleration is fine for me. In EV mode the torque often spins the tires momentarily when starting from a standing stop - an annoyance. Car steers accurately and corners smoothly: it is a pleasure to drive."

Anonymous, MI (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"Surprisingly peppy for a plug-hybrid. Nimble handling also. I call this a sports car for seniors ... fun to drive, and easy to get in and out."

James S., FL (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"I’m able to use primarily electric power in my city driving. Cost effective and very quiet ride. Smooth as silk."

Steve S., ON (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"The electric drive gives a very crisp start from a stop. Combined with the gas engine it feels quite powerful in my limited experience. The ride is quiet and very smooth, with little lean and bumps well absorbed. Very nimble."

Diane D., FL (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"this car is a hybrid. the acceleration is fantastic compared to other mfr's hybrids. I complained to the dealer about the car oversteering in an emergency maneuver and they apparently fixed the problem since it never happened again. the turning radius is unusually wide. my last 3 cars, all of which were longer, made tighter u-turns, but now that i am aware of the problem, i can compensate for it. over all, driving my c-max is fun."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"Acceleration AND Handling. Good MPG also!"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"Very good acceleration and very quiet"

Anonymous, OH (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"For a compact car, it handles like a good-quality mid-sized car. It has really good handling, in town and on the freeway. Acceleration is crisp, and instant. I couldn't ask any more of it."

Anonymous, UT (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"Given that this is not a large car, it has surprisingly good handling. And the mileage is quite good, too."

Anonymous, IL (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"Quick acceleration, responsive handling, solid brakes, even with five adults in the car."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"Very smooth and stable ride at high speed. Turn radius is not great."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"Powertrain is smooth and much more responsive than our old Prius. Handling is very good for a tall vehicle."

Donald H., MB (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"Very good power for a plug-in hybrid...both acceleration and passing."

Robb R., NC (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"The car accelerates surprisingly well for a Hybrid although not necessarily from a dead stop, but rather for passing. It handles well but the turning radius is a bit wide for getting in and out of tight spots."

Anonymous, IA (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"Secure and confidence inspiring."

Edward J., TX (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"When we purchased this vehicle, I thought it would be a throw away economy car. We enjoy driving this car so much that my wife doesn't care to drive anything else we own. It isn't the fastest accelerating, but it has no issues climbing any steep grades or merging onto freeways. I don't know what Ford figured out, but I never thought a small car could ride and drive so well. We now use the C-Max for all long and short drives."

Kevin B., CA (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"This car has excellent acceleration for its size and e gine."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"It has plenty of power but sometimes acts squirrelly during hard acceleration."

George E., VA (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"Very responsive acceleration. Other hybrids have a noticeable and unsafe delay when accelerating from a stop."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"Passing power (gas/electric combined) is impressive. Very important on mountain highways in B.C."

Anonymous, BC (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"Battery power has a lot of get up and go"

Steve K., IL (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"The C-Max was a pleasant surprise in this area -- it handles quite well, with responsive acceleration. The only drawback is the POOR turning ratio."

Jon Z., IL (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"Exceeded my expectations for a hybrid"

Anonymous, MI (2017 Ford C-MAX)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Upright seating is very comfortable and the ride is poised. It is pretty quiet."

Donald H., MB (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"Very uncomfortable seats"

John H., TN (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"Virtually no noise when on electric power. Smooth as silk. Beautiful drive."

Steve S., ON (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"Lumbar support on passenger side. Before, had to use a pillow for 200 mile trip. Did not have to. YAY! Leather seats, very nice interior"

Anonymous, TX (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"Leather seats are reasonably comfortable. Car is quiet both in EV mode and in hybrid modes. Car handles very well although may bounce around on bumpy roads (we have lots of those in Michigan)."

Anonymous, MI (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"I bought the car because it had comfortable, fabric seats with power adjustment."

George E., VA (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"This is the 'biggest' little car I have ever tested and/or bought. It is a compact sized car in terms of specs, but very large/roomey the be inside of."

Anonymous, UT (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"For a small car the seats are very comfortable (titanium) for a long trip - didn’ Expect it"

George P., GA (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"Very comfortable seating. Amazing headroom. Driver's seat is very accomodating to both my wife's and myself different physiques."

Greg S., ON (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"Car exterior seems small, but the interior is spacious. Car is very quiet."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"Easy to get into. Just a good all around car"

Anonymous, OH (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"High ceiling gives feeling of roominess in a compact size. Upright sitting and supportive seats give very comfortable and secure ride."

Diane D., FL (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"sits high, adjusts a lot"

Jennifer J., TX (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"It's very easy to get in and out, and the seats are comfortable"

James S., FL (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"seats are adequate. i am short and haven't had a great head/neck rest since my 1974 mazda rx2. This seat is as good as any other car seat. the car is relatively quiet and the ride as good as any other."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"I'm 5'3" and the leather adjustable seats in this car are the most comfortable seats I've ever experienced in any car I've ever owned. My 6' tall husband agrees."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"While the seats are very comfortable in the c-Max the driver on long trips has no good flat place to put his feet. Leaving your feet askew. And if not using cruise control the center console bulges out at the calf making the right knee and hip ache after a few hours as it forces you into a odd position."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"Very smooth ride"

Anonymous, MI (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"Uncomfortable for long trips. Very noisy inside cabin"

John H., TN (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"The ride is firm but not rough. The seats are very adjustable and comfortable, almost fitting like a glove. There is some road noise but not bad."

Anonymous, IA (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"The C-Max overall, has a solid well built feeling to it. For a small car, is has good road noise suppression. Very quiet ride. Even on the highway. The seats are comfortable, with a wide range of adjustibility. Also, the seats sit up on the high side, which is good. And for someone tall like myself (6'2") it's very easy to get in out. Very comfortable car."

Eric W., FL (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"Super quiet, especially when electric only. Very easy to get in and out of this car, even for my 85 year old father in law. Heated comfy seats."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"loud road noise"

Anonymous, MI (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"Seats are not comfortable. We are looking to replace because I am having back problems with this car. It may be because I am short, but very uncomfortable to drive more than 30 minutes."

Anonymous, CA (2017 Ford C-MAX)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Plug in Hybrid - local driving, including short trips on interstate average 1000 miles per tank of gas around 100 mpg plus plug in to recharge the battery but only when home."

Anonymous, MI (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"I got end of model year pricing and additional discount because my daughter works at ford dealership"

Anonymous, DE (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"The hybrid engine is great. Love the mileage I get."

Anonymous, MI (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"Depreciated too quickly. I am now upside down in financing"

John H., TN (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"Very economical to buy and drive. No maintenance expenses."

Robb R., NC (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"We really like the car, but paid $30,000 which is more than the competition. We use the plug-in hybrid feature a lot, and this results in very low operating costs."

David C., MD (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"Well other than having to wait about 4 years to have any trade in value on a 5 year loan, this car drops in value way too fast. It is a good car."

Anonymous, NY (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"The price was good and the gas mileage is fantastic."

Anonymous, OH (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"We were disappointed to find that the cost of running it on electricity is more than running it on gas. That is because electricity is more expensive in Massachusetts than most of the country and gas is cheaper than what was projected in the advertisement for the car."

Judith B., MA (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"Compared to other hybrids, especially the Toyota line, the lease on the C-Max is significantly less."

Anonymous, UT (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"This is our third and we decided to buy it since Ford has stopped making them. It is a wonderful vehicle. My wife commutes in it and often never uses the gasoline engine for a week at a time. For highway travel, it is comfortable and quiet at 80mph. Its handling and braking in wet or ice conditions is secure and competent. We have few complaints about the car and don’t understand why Ford didn’t do more to promote and retain the model."

Edward J., TX (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"If you want a great value in a great car, don't over look the C-Max Energi. It almost pays for itself."

Anonymous, MI (2017 Ford C-MAX)

"I think the price point of the c-max is set well. Fuel economy makes the vehicle worth the purchase price. Especially for people with a short commute."

Jay F., CA (2017 Ford C-MAX)
