The Edge is a car-based SUV with a 3.5-liter V6 engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is available, but the Ford crossover SUV doesn't offer a third-row seat. Ride is good and the powertrain is quite strong, but lacks refinement. The Edge isn't particularly agile, though its handling is ultimately secure. Interior fit and finish are unimpressive. IIHS crash-test results are commendable.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for over 300,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2021 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

    Richard B., LA (2008 Ford Edge Limited 3.5-L V6)

    Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

    What Owners Say

    Gear selector or linkage

    Peter V., FL (2008 Ford Edge SEL 3.5-L V6)
    Rough shifting

    Anonymous, CA (2008 Ford Edge 3.5-L V6)

"rough shifting was caused by computer"

Anonymous, IL (2008 Ford Edge SE 3.5-L V6)

"The transmission would hesitate when accelerating on an interstate ramp"

Anonymous, MD (2008 Ford Edge SE 3.5-L V6)

"The transmission on this vehicle has had myriad of transmission issues. The shifts are hard and sometimes it does not kick down in gear for acceleration needs. The transmission is just junk"

    Daniel P., FL (2008 Ford Edge Limted 3.5-L V6)

"trans would sometimes bang when shifting, especially from first to second gear"

    Richard G., NJ (2008 Ford Edge SEL 3.5-L V6)

"Sometimes the car wouldn't shift into another gear. It would stay in the gear it started in when trying to gain speed"

    Anonymous, CA (2008 Ford Edge 3.5-L V6)
    Slipping transmission

"The transmission would hesitate when accelerating onto an interstate ramp, for example"

Anonymous, MD (2008 Ford Edge SE 3.5-L V6)
    Transmission computer

"Sometimes it would get stuck in what sounded like being out of gear and I would have to pull over and move the gear shift up and back until it shifted back into gear"

    Ruth W., CA (2008 Ford Edge 3.5-L V6)

"Transmission would drop down to a very low gear. The only way to reset it was to come to a full stop turn the engine off, shift into "P" wait a few seconds and restart the engine. This happened several (5-6) times in commute traffic usually at 10-20 mph on Hwy 101. We took the car to the dealer and they were NOT ABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM. Finally it FAILED and we were able to drive it to the dealer in that failed condition. The onboard computer DID NOT present any useful information. An experienced mechanic had seen this problem before. We were told that the problem was a faulty computer part inside the transmission. The cost to repair this problem was more than ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS."

Anonymous, CA (2008 Ford Edge SEL 3.5-L V6)

"Speed sensor intermittently fails. After driving a while, it resets. Only solution is to rebuild transmission because of where sensor is located"

    Damian D., TX (2008 Ford Edge SEL 3.5-L V6)

"On the highway with my kids, a sensor went out making all of my gauges stop working. It seemed to be a common problem for the vehicle but it was still expensive to fix"

Anonymous, TX (2008 Ford Edge Limted 3.5-L V6)
    Transmission leaks

"Cost was less than $900 cdn. and was fixed. No problems since fix. I consider the leak minor considering the vehicle had over 90000 km on it at the time AND HAS BEEN THE ONLY ISSUE WE HAVE HAD WITH THIS VEHICLE."

Anonymous, BC (2008 Ford Edge Limted 3.5-L V6)

"Gasket leak - needed replacement - approx. $500 cdn. to repair (in hard to get at spot)"

    Robert T., VA (2008 Ford Edge Limted 3.5-L V6)

"The work was covered by warranty.Had PTU sel leaking between trans & PTU. PTU was replaced"

Anonymous, MN (2008 Ford Edge Limted 3.5-L V6)

"The transmission would sometimes slip, shift hard, or get stuck in a gear. Took it to the dealership and they said it was a sensor in the transmission that was bad and had to be replaced. Been fine so far since"

    Heidi T., AR (2008 Ford Edge SEL 3.5-L V6)

"trans started shifting improperly, sometimes rpm surges without speed increasing. Dealer said everything was fine. Then Trans finally locked up without warning. Dealer said it was both sensors: replaced but gas mileage dropped and minor problems"

    Richard G., NJ (2008 Ford Edge SEL 3.5-L V6)

Anonymous, PA (2008 Ford Edge Limted 3.5-L V6)
    Differential

"twice I have had the car in for service regarding shifting issues. Both were covered under warranty (extended) and both times it was the computer component that had to be replaced/reset"

Anonymous, CO (2008 Ford Edge Limted 3.5-L V6)

"The original equipment was a 5 disc player. The CD player quit changing and playing the inserted discs. Ford technicians were unable to repair the unit. External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"This feature works most of the time, but it often requires me to discunnect and reconnect until either the phone or ipod decide to work. I don't think it relateds to the intermittent door lock failures that have been a problem for the last two years"

    James T., CA (2008 Ford Edge SEL 3.5-L V6)

    Shocks or struts

"The shocks and struts no longer provide the ride recovery expected (at this low a KM thats not quality) they are the original Factory parts. Along with this the springs were not longer providing the support need for the ride. Rough ride, bottoming out with 4 passengers. Again original parts - low KMs -- not quality parts. Car comes with trailer pckg so does have (supposedly) heavier suspension parts."

    Charles T., AB (2008 Ford Edge Limted 3.5-L V6)

    "Shocks/struts needed replaced"

    Frank C., IN (2008 Ford Edge Limted 3.5-L V6)
