Ford's Expedition EL is a huge SUV capable of carrying nine passengers, their luggage and still tow a heavy trailer. For the most part, the EL succeeds. It has a roomy third-row seat, it handles reasonably well, and it accelerates strongly while towing our 5,000-pound test trailer. However, the Expedition's ride is stiff, it gets low fuel economy and the engine frequently sounds coarse and strained.

Reliability indicates how models have performed in the past, providing the basis for predicting how the vehicles will hold up in the year ahead. These charts provide the most comprehensive reliability information available to consumers. Based on information received from our latest subscriber survey for about 420,000 vehicles, our reliability history charts give you a rundown on how 2000 through 2019 vehicles are holding up in 17 potential trouble spots, ranging from the engine, transmission, and brakes to power equipment and the electrical system. NA indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2013 Ford Expedition owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

Suspension

Shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage (includes rack and pinion), power steering (pumps and hoses, leaks), wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, electronic or air suspension.

What Owners Say

Shocks or struts

"All 4 shocks leak and need to be replaced"

Anonymous, GA (2013 Ford Expedition XLT 5.4-L V8)

Paint/Trim

Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling), loose interior and exterior trim or moldings, rust.

What Owners Say

"Rear panel piece above back hatch came loose during a heat wave. It had been glued in place at the factory after one of the latches failed. Disappointed in problems of trim falling off this vehicle. Have to keep a roll of duct tape handy"

Richard B., CA (2013 Ford Expedition Limited 5.4-L V8)
Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"Paint is bubbling on tailgate near join with tailgate handle. Ford says there is no corrosion and that the paint is out of warranty. I think there is corrosion in that the bubbles seem to have a white powder under them that looks like aluminum oxide. The tailgate is aluminum"

Jay C., SC (2013 Ford Expedition XL 5.4-L V8)
Rust

"Small rust patched on rear Hath"

Anonymous, OK (2013 Ford Expedition Limited 5.4-L V8)

"Rust is another term for corrosion; since the corrosion is limited to the aluminum tailgate at this time, I simply wanted to indicate that corrosion was a problem, and "rust" was the only category available to choose"

Jay C., SC (2013 Ford Expedition XL 5.4-L V8)

"Tail gate with bubbling rust under tha paint near the license plate holder"

Anonymous, MI (2013 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer 5.4-L V8)
