While the current Explorer is a vast improvement over its predecessor, it competed in a market with many more choices. Still, its steady ride and versatile, well-designed interior made for a well-rounded package. Its main drawbacks were an unrefined V6 engine and unimpressive performance on our off-road course. Stability control was standard in 2005.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

JAMES S., GA (2005 Ford Explorer)

"The cabin is too noisy, although other vehicles are worse."

Kenneth H., CA (2005 Ford Explorer)

"This car has an annoying noise at highway speeds with the wind hitting the car in a specific direction. Very annoying."

Anonymous, FL (2005 Ford Explorer)

Ronald N., WA (2005 Ford Explorer)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Loved everything about it except the transmission. Had to have a transmission rebuild at 71,000 miles and AGAIN at 105,000 miles. Ford Explorer transmissions suck!"

DOUGLAS T., AE (2005 Ford Explorer)

"Good value for a 2005 model. The vehicle has lasted more than 10 years and 160,000 miles."

MICHAEL B., VA (2005 Ford Explorer)

"Since we purchased this veichle in 2005, we have not had 1 problem with it until the a/c compressor went just this year in 2016. It has started eveytime we beeded it and has never had a major problem. The inside is roomy and comfortable. It was a very good purchase."

Anonymous, NY (2005 Ford Explorer)

"It does what it is suppose to do. Haul stuff and will seat 7 adults."

JOHN D., CO (2005 Ford Explorer)

"purchased used from car rental company 1 year old with about 30K miles; purchased extra warranty and glad I did"

Anonymous, WA (2005 Ford Explorer)

"It was a good buy three time air & heat control problems great driving truck very bad gas mileage for its size 19mpg on the highway with V6 rear window hinges rusted bad were connects to the glass no probables with motor or tran. just replaced front wheel bearings at 175000 :)"

John B., MN (2005 Ford Explorer)

"In the past 12 years, we have only had to replace the alternator and the transmission. I will say that my husband is not diligent about maintenance"

Anonymous, NJ (2005 Ford Explorer)

"Bought new at "family" price to tow behind motor home. It has about as many miles being towed as is on odometer. Only repairs has been one wheel bearing and replacement of intake manifold from corrosion. We love this vehicle and there is certainly no value in replacing it with a new Explorer."

Gordon R., CA (2005 Ford Explorer)
