We tested two versions of the Ford F-150 pickup: one with the new 5.0-liter V8 and the other with an EcoBoost turbocharged V6. Performance numbers for the two engines were nearly identical overall, but we liked the V8's sound better than the more high-tech V6's. Both of our trucks got the same fuel economy -- 15 mpg overall, which was then strong for the class.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

Anonymous, OH (2011 Ford F-150 FX2 5.0-L V8)

"My truck is equipped with numerous speakers, 98% of the time 1 speaker works. The Ford mechanics replaced a speaker but couldn't fix the problem. "When running the AC, the cool air only comes out of the driver’s side vents and in the back. The passenger side vents are blowing hot air."

Gayle P., CO (2011 Ford F-150 XLT 5.0-L V8)

"Damper went out and the drivers side blew outside cold air regardless of the control setting. The passenger side worked find because the damper on that side did not go out. Doug L., MO (2011 Ford F-150 Platinum 3.5-L V6 turbo)

"There was a problem with a part failure that caused the fan to cease functioning. An electronic part that continues to fail from time to time. This part is now carried in the truck as it is easy to replace by the owner."

R H., SK (2011 Ford F-150 XLT 5.0-L V8)

"Bearing in motor is starting to squeak. I've had other issues with the blender door actuator, needed replacing because the gears inside was cheap plastic and the teeth broke. The control that changes between the upper vents and floor vents sticks quite often. When the engine starts, the climate control cycles through heat mode for a couple seconds before switching to AC. Its always done this and sucks when it's 95 degrees outside, here in the south."

Mike L., ON (2011 Ford F-150 XLT 3.7-L V6)

"Experienced an intermittent loss of the electrical assist on the power steering electric motor in the rack and pinion. Failures caused a binding in the steering and wonding of vehicle. Entire rack and pinion system required replacement. This type of issure with steering I consider to be a safety issue plus cost is sufficent for replacement of rack and pinion. Electric assist is a nice idea for adding fuel effeciency but not a good idea when failure will cause binding in the steering system. Same type of system installed in Ford's cars that the manufacturer is being sued for and Ford has done some recalls on for certain cars. System needs a redesign and recall."

"With about 15000 mile on the vehicle we took it on an extended journey to Canada/Alaska. On the return trip the vehicle became more and more sluggish and the Rocky Mountains were a concern but we did drive it home. The dealership was very responsive and determined that the engine had lost a cylinder and replaced it under warranty. We were without this vehicle about 10 days maybe two week. My only complaint was that Ford would not provide a new vehicle warranty on this engine but deducted the 15000 miles the vehicle had been driven. I do believe the 50,000 mile warranty should have been applied to this replacement engine. For the record, this multi piece pickup bed is extremely dirty with a topper on. Timing belt or chain

"I have a 3.5L Eco-Boost engine. At about 160000 km, the engine had noticeably lost a bit of power and the Check Engine Light (CEL) had intermittently turned on but had reset without me having to do anything. The CEL turned on and did not reset at about 62000 km and I took it to a local trusted mechanic at Fountain Tire. The mechanic diagnosed that the timing belt needed replacement. I also had the phazers (computer-controlled camshaft timing control units) replaced at the same time, even though they were not diagnosed as faulty. Total cost of $3700. About 3 weeks later, my engine lost most of its power and the CEL light came on again. I took it to the same Fountain Tire shop for warranty repair, because I assumed that the same problem had reoccurred. I am currently waiting on this repair to be completed."

"Ford has a service bulletin about the 2011 to 2015 Eco Boost engines, where the engine is left over night or a few hours that when it id restarted there is a loud rattle for a few seconds. It is the cam shaft synchronize gears bleeding the oil out of them. They are trying to find the proper positions. Ford nor my after market insurance Protective would do anything for me even tho it was cover because of the expense. Protective offered to cover the cost of the cam synchronize gears and nothing else. Manley Ford of Belvidere IL. told me it was my imagination till the factory warranty expired. It does not harm the engine but makes a lot of noise. Ford has a Technical Service Builtin TSB-15-0131 That covers the noise for the F-150 2011 to 5-29-2015 Eco Boost 3.5L motors. "My truck has a 3.5L Eco-Boost engine. The 'check engine light (CEL)' occurred intermittently between 60,000 km and 93000 km, but reset each time without me doing anything. When the CEL occurred at about 93000 km and did not reset for days, I took it to a local dealer for the 95000 km inspection and to troubleshoot the CEL. The dealer said that they had to replace all plugs due to having too much wear (i.e. plug gaps were too large) and that this gap had caused the individual plug coils to fail due to the high voltages needed to produce a spark with the large plug gaps. The Inspection and replacing the plugs cost about $600 but the additional parts & labour cost of replacing the 6 coils brought the cost up to $1400. When the parts desk worker heard what happened to the plugs and coils, he said it was not unusual for a 3.5L Eco-Boost motor to suffer this failure."

"The coils around each spark plug that produce the electronic fuel injection arced across and would not let the engine accelerate. It would still run if there was not much load on it. According to internet discussions this is a common problem that cost up to $600 our of pocket to correct."

"Bought truck in 2011; it had 3.7L ecoboost engine. Since 2012 or so, the engine has had an intermittent hesitation (felt like one spark plug did not fire under heavy load/acceleration). Hesitation became much more common in 2016 after hauling/towing some heavy loads therefore took into Ford dealership at about 93,000 km. Dealership said that I had worn the plugs down until gap had widened from 0.28" gap to 0.56" gap and that the larger gap caused all 6 coils to fail due to higher internal"

Ford service couldn't really solve the problem, they had some suggestions but it was mostly a shrug on their part. Rust

"We purchased this truck in 2017 summer and it was pre scratched and had what we thought were paint chipping from gravel roads around the front and rear wheel wells. We had the paint repaired that year but less than 12 months later it was apparent that much of what we thought was surface rust was full penetration from the inside. We returned to the body shop to complain and at the same time did some research into the cab corners and rear wheel well penetration issues. The shop stood behind their work and we worked out a parts only deal to repair the damage by replacing the cab corners and wheel well steel. What this means though is that by 2017 the truck had fully rusted out in those areas and new repair panels were needed in 5 years. From our research we found that US domestic trucks are again suffering from corrosion problems much like they did in the 1970's. Technically corrosion problems have been solved and we should be expecting at least 10 years before interior corrosion becomes an issue. We are back to the rusty ford problems that plagued not only Ford but the big 4 automakers during that time. We spoke to 4 body shops in the area and they indicated that all domestic trucks were suffering from these premature corrosion problems. Very disappointing, expensive and well beyond minor cosmetic damage. Frankly when you are paying 10's of 1000's of $ for a truck you expect high quality in all areas especially one that was so high profile just a couple of generations ago."
