We tested two versions of the Ford F-150 pickup: one with the new 5.0-liter V8 and the other with an EcoBoost turbocharged V6. Performance numbers for the two engines were nearly identical overall, but we liked the V8's sound better than the more high-tech V6's. Both of our trucks got the same fuel economy -- 15 mpg overall, which was then strong for the class.

Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

"Very quiet and powerful with great brakes"

Anonymous, WA (2011 Ford F-150)

"It has excellent acceleration with just a 6 cylinder engine. Handling is solid with good feedback."

Anonymous, MD (2011 Ford F-150)

"The truck has excellent acceleration and towing capacity. I don't think I've ever stressed the engine at all."

John B., TN (2011 Ford F-150)

"The Ecoboost engine is fantastic for acceleration when needs you press on the gas and power just comes through. If you watch your acceleration and speed you can regularly get more than 30 mpg when driving solo if you can avoid pressing too heavily on the gas pedal. Your top speed and how fast you get there determines rather you are getting great gas mileage or not. Press down on the gas and away you go with fantastic acceleration if you need it. Towing up to 11000 is no sweat."

Donald G., IN (2011 Ford F-150)

"It has excellent acceleration when needed without excessive engine noise transmission lag"

Stirling Y., YT (2011 Ford F-150)

"It takes way too much space for parallel parking.Does not turn tight enough. You didn't ask about the 2001 Tundra I just gave to my grandson. 325000 miles and STILL drives like a champ!!Only did oil changes and shed maint. My fave vehicle EVER!!!!! He loves it too!! Drives it to Houston and back every week. Thank you Toyota."

"The ride is comfortable for a truck and the ecoboost engine acceleration and towing capabilities are amazing."

John B., CA (2011 Ford F-150)

"Awesome acceleration, even when towing a trailer. I have 5000 pound trailers, when loaded and this pickup handles them with ease."

Virgil G., NE (2011 Ford F-150)

"The torque on the stock 5.0 liter engine is stunning and the truck pulls strongly with or without a trailer. The handling package makes the truck easier to drive than any 1/2 ton truck I have driven. The suspension tracks true and straight, even with the OEM Goodyear tires (since replaced with Michelin LTX M/S2's). Visibility is great and the towing mirrors provide a clear, safe, "no blind spot" view when trailering. I can take a standard 90 right turn at almost 25 mph without squealing the tires - better than my 1999 Explorer 2dr."

Garland M., NC (2011 Ford F-150)

"Good acceleration for a V6, some kick when shifting up hard in traffic between 2nd and 3rd gear but all in all very happy. Zero issues with drivetrain over almost 190,000 miles."

Rob G., GA (2011 Ford F-150)

"NOTHING BAD. The ecoboost engine makes this big truck fun to drive. (Super Crew with 61/2 foot bed. Drives and handles much better that expected. Great ride. We have 3 other vehicles and this is the one we choose to take on vacation."

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"This truck has been a workhorse and a tremendous value. I will buy another Ford truck in the future."

Steve W., TX (2011 Ford F-150)

"Excellent price for the most basic regular cab model. Did not have to pay for any extras that I did not need."

Timothy R., ON (2011 Ford F-150)

"The Ecoboost engine delivers erratic and unpredictable mileage-something like 17.5 mpg +/- 25%. Not sure it was worth the premium cost. Delivers plenty of power, much more than I need. Overall, nice truck."

Maurice B., WV (2011 Ford F-150)

"Just after warranty my electric mirrors stop working. They said it was a fuse which is in the rear window. Cost $1000.00 to fix it"

Anonymous, WA (2011 Ford F-150)

"We use our F150 for regular driving and for towing our 29' toy hauler. The ecoboost engine is absolutely amazing for towing."

Anonymous, TX (2011 Ford F-150)

"Great truck, hard working, long lasting"

Donald M., FL (2011 Ford F-150)

"2011 was a good year to buy a truck as the economy was still recovering. I paid $10,685 under MSRP and more than 5K under invoice. The new (then new) 6-speed transmission and the H85 tow/haul suspension made the truck a joy to drive. The only other maker competitive was Toyota, and their best price for a similar truck was $9K more. I would buy again."

Garland M., NC (2011 Ford F-150)

"Ford is too high priced compared to other trucks. They way they bucket their accessories is not good either, they force you into buying certain accessories you may not want due to it being included with other packages."

Anonymous, MI (2011 Ford F-150)

"Special MAX HD towing Package with 3.5L EcoBoost engine. This engine is faster and more powerful than the 450 cid F250 Ford of the past. 2 wheel drive super crew which doubles as a daily driver when you need it to or a Max Mowing machine when needed."

Donald G., IN (2011 Ford F-150)

"Paid a very low price for a somewhat basic vehicle. Got great value considering the vehicle<s retail price."

Anonymous, ON (2011 Ford F-150)

Harold H., TX (2011 Ford F-150)

"Vehicle as solid as the day I bought it 7 years ago. Great ride & Handling, very dependable."

Michael N., FL (2011 Ford F-150)

"Great vehicle to pull my 3 trailers of various sizes. Great vehicle for handling large objects in the covered box."

Dave G., WI (2011 Ford F-150)

"This truck has been awesome, aside from a few flaws in the braking and coolant systems. the first year of the ecoboost 3.5 V6. Plenty of power and very comfortable to drive. I had issues with the brake booster that needed multiple visits to the dealer. But after some serious troubleshooting they finally got it right. The coolant system as well. Problems with the water pump, coolant lines and the overflow tank had to be replaced. The Coil packs and plugs had to be replaced as well at around 70k m..."

Daniel W., NJ (2011 Ford F-150)

"The XLT was a great value. I sacrificed upscale features like leather, console shift, backup camera and GPS, but I added a separate backup camera for about $100 from Costco."

"Gas mileage has never been as good as expected."

Anonymous, AZ (2011 Ford F-150)

John P., ON (2011 Ford F-150)

"Good value for towing work horse"

Anonymous, ON (2011 Ford F-150)
