We tested two versions of the Ford F-150 pickup: one with the new 5.0-liter V8 and the other with an EcoBoost turbocharged V6. Performance numbers for the two engines were nearly identical overall, but we liked the V8's sound better than the more high-tech V6's. Both of our trucks got the same fuel economy -- 15 mpg overall, which was then strong for the class.

What Owners Say

"The ecco boost really helps with towing along with anti-sway towing for my camper."

Arnold L., IL (2012 Ford F-150)

"The Ecoboost system gives amazing acceleration with the V-6 engine. It is there when you need it."

Anonymous, OH (2012 Ford F-150)

"Drives great at 85-90k miles. No major issues to report."

Anonymous, GA (2012 Ford F-150)

"The 3.5 eco boost was a concern for longevity. But I have been impressed with the power and acceleration for a full sized pickup. If I drive it properly I can achieve 25 MPG highway. Toyota Tacoma with it's go-cart interior can't match that. And with the rproper rear end gear ratio this engine transmission combination can pull 12,000 lbs. Or haul 1,500 lbs in the bed. This is a working man's truck with the ability to ride like a modest luxury car."

Thomas M., MO (2012 Ford F-150)

"Great acceleration"

Anonymous, FL (2012 Ford F-150)

"It is an Ecoboost engine and has amazing, smooth power. A real joy to drive! Have to watch speed because it is so quiet and smooth."

Anonymous, MO (2012 Ford F-150)

"My truck has the 3.5L EcoBoost engine. As for the good; this engine has great power and torque for take off. Now for the bad. The gas mileage isn't what it should be for a 6-Cylinder engine. Also, there is a very long hesitation before takeoff when you shove the gas peddle to the floor. This needs to be much more instantaneous."

Anonymous, OH (2012 Ford F-150)

"Eco boost makes me think I'm driving a dragster!"

Ralph J., CA (2012 Ford F-150)

"The vehicle is very stable, comfortable, and easy to maneuver, both on the highway as well as in city traffic."

William P., VA (2012 Ford F-150)

"The eco boost engine is very powerful and smooth. Very good at towing our travel trailer."

Jack J., OR (2012 Ford F-150)

"Steering responds well, ride is smooth, accelerates quickly when needed. Highly recommend. Would buy again."

Anonymous, IA (2012 Ford F-150)

"We have owned many F series pickups over the years, most were daily drivers, and used for towing boats, trailers exc. This F-150 Raptor is the best of them all. Rides and handles on the highway nice, tow's 10.000 lb enclosed trailer with ease, and is great for off road exploring"

Kevin B., CA (2012 Ford F-150)

"Find it sluggish upon first accelerating. Have had trouble with turbos failing!"

Helen N., MI (2012 Ford F-150)

"Overall good, but the vehicle has had issues with brakes sticking. Sometimes only one wheel sometimes just the front or back. This has caused decreased fuel economy and premature brake wear. Based on how it happens, it seems like it is a computer issue that may be tied to abs?"

Ethan B., FL (2012 Ford F-150)

"Fantastic engine with strong power and good mileage."

John S., IN (2012 Ford F-150)

"Don't like the 90 mph speed limiter. Makes passing scary."

Larry G., CA (2012 Ford F-150)

"It is just so fun to drive. It handles very nicely on the freeway at top speeds as well as on dirt roads in the mountains. 4 wheel driving is very enjoyable also."

Anonymous, UT (2012 Ford F-150)

"The 5.0 V8 accelerates nicely. The truck is heavy and most of the time, even in snow I dont need to turn on 4 wheel drive."

Brian N., NJ (2012 Ford F-150)

"This truck has wonderful acceleration and is very easy to handle on the road. Quick, nimble, and peppy. Its a big truck, and has some get and go!"

Randall S., OK (2012 Ford F-150)

"tough to turn at times"

Anonymous, ME (2012 Ford F-150)

"Use it mainly to pull a travel trailer. It does a good job. Has good power and control when pulling trailer even on grades."

Anonymous, WA (2012 Ford F-150)

"Amazing acceleration with beginning hesitation due to turbo lag. Handling is good but jumpy on bumps."

Dave-Karen P., CO (2012 Ford F-150)

"I had a 2011 F-150 of this same model, XLT and was in an accident. Someone, at 65 mph hit me broadside, T-bone, and rolled the truck over twice with my son and I inside. Son walked away, I rode in ambulance away with a broken neck. We both should have been killed because this accident was horrific. We both are fine now because of the Ford F-150!"

Mark G., KS (2012 Ford F-150)

"I bought the Ecoboost V6 because of its performance, and it has not disappointed, even though it's having a problem with hesitation sometimes at highway speeds. The handling is good for 4x4 pickup truck with towing package."

James V., MA (2012 Ford F-150)

"acceleration is Awesome for a V6. Love the dual turbo engine. CrewCab is roomy and comfortable. Supsension is stiff, but it's a Truck, better with a load in the bed. Tows my trailer and Jeep GREAT. handling it great."

Michael R., UT (2012 Ford F-150)

"Many times the transmission ‘clunks’ real hard upon acceleration. Not great pickup for this type vehicle"

Anonymous, FL (2012 Ford F-150)

"Pulls my travel trailer very well."

Steve S., NM (2012 Ford F-150)

"Handles well for a pickup. Good acceleration. Tows 27ft trailer very competently"

Dave L., AB (2012 Ford F-150)

"The truck drives great, acceleration and handling are very good."

Robert H., GA (2012 Ford F-150)

"Excellent acceleration and handling. Very pleased with how the vehicle drives."

Candace K., TX (2012 Ford F-150)

"eco-boost gives quick acceleration"

Ryan R., AZ (2012 Ford F-150)

"Great driving this truck!"

Anonymous, IL (2012 Ford F-150)

"Very good acceleration. Amazing gas mileage."

Anonymous, FL (2012 Ford F-150)

"The F150 is an exceptionally comfortable highway cruiser. Gas mileage on the highway is very good 23 to 25 mpg. The ecoboost 3.5 V6 is very powerful but thrifty if driven sensibly. I have a cab-high Campershell which help s the aerodynamics of vehicle."

John Y., KS (2012 Ford F-150)

"The Eco boost engine is great the ride is excellent and it smooth."

Anonymous, NC (2012 Ford F-150)

"3.5L Ecoboost very responsive even with 85K miles. Runs overall very well however not as much Eco as their is Boost and I'm light on the throttle. Overall does not deliver the efficiency touted for."

Anonymous, MI (2012 Ford F-150)

"I love every thing about this truck. With the eco-boost and dual turbos it goes when you need it. It is a joy to drive, comfortable and responding."

Linn G., CA (2012 Ford F-150)

"5.0L engine has plenty of horsepower for this truck, even when loaded."

Robert S., VA (2012 Ford F-150)

"The Eco-boost engine is wonderful. Excellent acceleration without compromising gas efficiency."

Penny M., CA (2012 Ford F-150)

"acceleration"

Anonymous, PA (2012 Ford F-150)

"It is very stable even when loaded and pulling a travel trailer. It is easy to stay up with the traffic and especially in hilly or mountainous conditions while loaded and towing."

Rebecca M., TX (2012 Ford F-150)

"It has always jumped when accelerating. If you rabbit start, it shift correctly, if you just pull away normally it bumps into 3rd. Ford has no idea why. I do like the styling, the ride and comfort. What I don’t like is the air conditioning system. $2,000 to have the “plastic‿ blend door repaired. It was behind the steering wheel requiring them to remove the panel to get to it. Why plastic?"

James H., VA (2012 Ford F-150)

"The eco boost motor just wants to keep pulling"

Anonymous, CA (2012 Ford F-150)

"good pick up for speed, handles nice"

Bruce B., VT (2012 Ford F-150)

"This truck accelerates and handles beautifully. Haven't had a truck do this before. Very smooth."

Margaret H., BC (2012 Ford F-150)

"Great work truck. Pulls 16' trailer with tractor every day. Handles great with or without trailer."

Mark S., TN (2012 Ford F-150)

"Its engine is stronger than most v8s out there"

Eugene H., VA (2012 Ford F-150)

"It handles like a truck, which I don't mind. It handles a load easily but requires a little more room to maneuver...but it's a truck! It's smooth on the road, quiet, comfortable, and capable of carrying a load or pulling a trailer. For me this vehicle can do it all, and do it all well."

Anonymous, MT (2012 Ford F-150)

"The 2012 F-150 has fairly good acceleration but it is not as good as the acceleration of the 2014 Escape."

Anonymous, TX (2012 Ford F-150)

"It is a quiet vehicle and nice to go on extended drives with =, it give you a feeling of safety and comfort. I tow a 21 foot trailer with ease. Really enjoy the sound it makes while accelerating."

Anonymous, BC (2012 Ford F-150)

"Acceleration is very good and towing trailers is easy."

Charles Z., WI (2012 Ford F-150)

"3.5 ecoboost is awesome. I can pull my 7500# trailer at speed limits, up hill. Handling is good for a truck."

Steve S., NM (2012 Ford F-150)

"I really like the handing and and power!"

"Good performance."

Anonymous, MA (2012 Ford F-150)

Anonymous, CA (2012 Ford F-150)

Anonymous, NH (2012 Ford F-150)

"It is a bit of a bumpy ride"

Anonymous, NY (2012 Ford F-150)

"Good acceleration while still getting good gas mileage. A few hiccups when shifting in low gears."

Anonymous, WI (2012 Ford F-150)

"For a pickup it has enough power to merge safely into traffic even when pulling a trailer. Steering feedback is good, factory mirrors help to eliminate many blind spots."

William S., AR (2012 Ford F-150)

"The eco boast engine is great."

Michael D., NV (2012 Ford F-150)

"Eco Boost is amazing! Acceleration of a race car and mpg of a small sedan. My F150 is 4WD!"

Ralph J., CA (2012 Ford F-150)

"Very good acceleration and handling for a 4 wheel drive vehicle"

Anonymous, MS (2012 Ford F-150)

"it is a 2 wheel drive but handles our steep gravel driveway well. Gets good mileage when pulling our trailer"

James N., OR (2012 Ford F-150)

"I get a smile on my face every time I ask it to respond."

G W., TX (2012 Ford F-150)

"The ecoboost v6 will not run properly when it is humid or raining. The turbo takes in too much moisture and the computer make it stall in order not to burn up the cat converter. Ford issued a repair at the owner's expense and my truck stalled again the very next day during a light rain. The stalls have almost cause accident on two occasions."

Robert B., TX (2012 Ford F-150)

"My F150 handles very well for a full size truck, and the Ecoboost engine has great acceleration and towing torque. The bad is that the Ecoboost doesn't get near the gas mileage that it did when new."

Cecil P., AR (2012 Ford F-150)

"works great in snow and rain"

Wyatt G., IA (2012 Ford F-150)

"Handling is very good, larger turn radius than I like. Transmission shifts very abruptly at times."

Anonymous, TX (2012 Ford F-150)

"Nice speed when needed for highway merges."

Anonymous, TX (2012 Ford F-150)

"The engine torque and responsiveness are first rate so you feel you are in control"

Mark C., ME (2012 Ford F-150)

"This is a big truck, but the handling of it so easy and comfortable. Love it!"

Bob B., CA (2012 Ford F-150)

"The acceleration and power in the truck is great however I have had a lot of problems with misfires and engine codes because of this as well as a catalytic converter code pop up. This has put the truck briefly into limp mode while attempting to pass on a hi-way! I have had plugs and could replaced numerous times and this keeps happening very frustrating. I'd buy the truck again but not with an ecoboost"

Anonymous, AB (2012 Ford F-150)

"It's freakin' awesome for a truck! I love it."

Anonymous, SD (2012 Ford F-150)

"Handles well."

Anonymous, AB (2012 Ford F-150)

"Turbo has turbo lag on very quick acceleration, turbo use while driving is very good. We pull a camper and the ecoboost definately gives us the same power as a v8. Handling is good for a truck."

David P., CO (2012 Ford F-150)

"Acceleration is just fine with the V8 engine. But the long box and cab make my version difficult to maneuver in parking lots."

Anonymous, MT (2012 Ford F-150)

"Rides like a limo. Plus I can go anywhere!"

Allan W., PA (2012 Ford F-150)

"very responsive"

Anonymous, OH (2012 Ford F-150)

"I bought this because it out ran all the other brands (comparing the Ecoboost V6 with 5L V-8s). Put your foot down and hang on. The twin-turbo has plenty of power; I tow a 26-foot trailer carrying four 900lb motorcycles with it, and it performs flawlessly. Mileage with trailer is about 13mpg; 15-17 without. Rides well on the highway - comfortable for long trips. This is my first automatic transmission vehicle: I would have opted for a stick if it were available."

James V., MA (2012 Ford F-150)

"The acceleration and handling are good even when pulling a horse trailer. It is one of the reasons we purchased the 2016 F150."

Eugenia G., TX (2012 Ford F-150)

"Nothing negative at all. Great acceleration and handling."

Robert S., OK (2012 Ford F-150)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Overall nice ride for LWB 4x4 truck. Seats supportive and comfortable on long trips. Usual windnoise however cabin is surprisingly quiet for mid-level package."

Anonymous, MI (2012 Ford F-150)

"Driving this vehicle is very easy and comfortable. Seats, leg room, distance from wheel, etc. is perfect."

Yvonne F., GA (2012 Ford F-150)

"The in-seat air-conditioning is amazing. We live in a very hot, humid climate and the in-seat A/C is a game-changer. We don't use it all the time, because it can be a bit much, but if you are trying to arrive at a formal event and not be a hot, sweating mess, the in-seat A/C really comes to the rescue. The seats are also very comfortable and super-adjustable. It is one of the most comfortable vehicles I've ever been in."

Elizabeth J., LA (2012 Ford F-150)

"An absolutely amazing ride, smooth, quiet, and comfortable."

Craig B., NY (2012 Ford F-150)

"All of the seats, driver and passengers, are extremely comfortable. The seats are wide and soft with excellent lumbar support. There is very little road noise so it is possible to carry on a conversation with passengers. The suspension is excellent and gives a very smooth ride."

Candace K., TX (2012 Ford F-150)

"Plenty of room to stretch out; back seat is cavernous. This truck has a smooth ride similar to many cars. We take it on vacation and have plenty of room for everything."

Michael H., IL (2012 Ford F-150)

"very comfortable seats, less noisy than expected - especially with good quality replacement tires, ride is smooth"

Robert S., VA (2012 Ford F-150)

"the ride is still good. the noise and seat comfort are still very good"

Mary M., NY (2012 Ford F-150)

"The ride is quite good but the wind noise is bad"

Jimmie D., AL (2012 Ford F-150)

"The driver seat at 66000 miles is bottoming out. Im 6 ft 210 pounds. somewhat disappointing"

Jack R., FL (2012 Ford F-150)

"Good value, reliable and comfortable and brake system and exhaust last a long time. I still have the original exhaust."

Anonymous, ON (2012 Ford F-150)

"Excellent seating position and support. Heated and cooled are very nice."

John S., IN (2012 Ford F-150)

"Looks great, seats are comfortable, low noise level and I really like the truck. The info system in the 2012 series truck is not easy to use and has already been changed on following models. The gas petal is too close to the drive shaft tunnel and the rounded design of the tunnel makes it difficult to keep you foot one the gas without fatigue."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Ford F-150)

"It's a very comfortable truck, tons of room in the backseat for storage and passengers. At 6'3, I can ride in the backseat comfortably without moving the driver's seat. It's also a very quiet ride and the seats are comfortable as well."

Anonymous, GA (2012 Ford F-150)

"Very quiet and comfortable for a truck"

Anonymous, ON (2012 Ford F-150)

"Who decided to make the truck as wide as it is? We have twice damaged the side mirrors (replacement cost over $400) because there is < 3" clearance on either side of the garage doors! Also, whose bright idea was it not to put a handle on the ceiling of the driver's side? How do you think shorter drivers can get into the cab without a handle to grab onto?"

Valerie H., NH (2012 Ford F-150)

"Overall, very comfortable, low noise, a lot of good adjustment. Negatives are: 1) there should be a handle above the door not just in front of the door. 2) driver's seat has a plastic piece to protect the corner that rubs against your leg if wearing shorts"

Scott E., KY (2012 Ford F-150)

"I've had it on several long trips and it is a) easy to drive, b) comfortable, c) fairly quiet. Much better than the Subaru."

James V., MA (2012 Ford F-150)

"Excellent driving truck, very well satisfied with handling and power."

Jesse C., VA (2012 Ford F-150)

"The heated and cooled leather seats are very nice for short or long rides. The 4WD rides very well and there is no outside noise."

Anonymous, MS (2012 Ford F-150)

"I have leather seating with the heat and ventilation (cooling) built in. So far, the wear of the leather seems to be good and the seats are comfortable. The only thing I would change is I would make the driver's seat drop one inch lower to the floor."

Anonymous, OH (2012 Ford F-150)

"Very quiet. Smooth ride. Handles snow and ice better than any previous truck I've owned."

Lyle B., VA (2012 Ford F-150)

"very comfortable seats on long trip"

Anonymous, FL (2012 Ford F-150)

"unable to see outside of rear of truck, blind spot also my toolbox is way too high had trouble with the steering power on the front end had to have 1900 in repairs done to it also electronics in the steering wheel is expensive to diogonise and repair"

Louis D., WY (2012 Ford F-150)

"Standard XLT Seats are a little hard."

Larry G., CA (2012 Ford F-150)

"Overall it is comfortable. But, the steering wheel needs a larger amount of travel when tilting. It does not tilt high enough for taller drivers. This has been noticed by several tall drivers"

Len W., IL (2012 Ford F-150)

"quite and comfortable ride"

Bruce B., VT (2012 Ford F-150)

"AC and Heated seats and adjusted able"

"This is my first Ford product in more than forty years. It is an excellent vehicle. The only mistake I made in its purchase was not getting the 4-door model."

"I got a decent price using CR buying service for pretty much exactly what I wanted."

Anonymous, WA (2012 Ford F-150)

"First, I love this truck. It has plenty of power for towing and hauling and has been very reliable. The bad news, rust on the rear corners of the cab. Sounds like this is a fairly normal problem unless you do more than just wash the vehicle frequently. Ford would not do anything about it (out of warranty). Quoted me almose $3,000 to fix."

"overall pretty happy, however did expect better mileage. my overall mpg is 15.6, and with the V6 I thought I'd get better."

Kenneth B., WA (2012 Ford F-150)

"I got exactly what I wanted for the price. Would do it all over again."

Anonymous, BC (2012 Ford F-150)

"Good value for the price. Reliable, long lasting vehicle. Very few problems and economical for our use. We travel with this vehicle, pulling a small travel trailer and the truck loaded with our gear."

Rebecca M., TX (2012 Ford F-150)

"I believe that it is the best light duty truck out their"

Monte M., ID (2012 Ford F-150)

"I have had more trouble with this vehicle than with all previous ones combined. Had I not got the premium extended warranty I could not afford to fix it. The Ford dealership is the worst for service. When we brought it home brand new my wife came upon a large greasy thumb nail clipping in a cup holder. Things got worse from there."

C D., ON (2012 Ford F-150)

"It was a great price and has held its value very well."

Stewart S., NC (2012 Ford F-150)

"I purchased the truck at the end of a lease so basically received a new vehicle at half price. It has great features and is essentially a new truck (very low miles)."

"it is still in style.pull 28ft travel trailer no problem."

Raymond K., TX (2012 Ford F-150)

"Holds its value better, if not the best of any full size trucks."

Eugene H., VA (2012 Ford F-150)

"All vehicles are over priced. The MSRP is always high. Then the dealer makes it look like you are really getting a deal when they take so many dollars off that. It means nothing. But give you low dollar for a trade in. They do not compare apples and apples."

Anonymous, SD (2012 Ford F-150)

"The performance of the 3.5 liter ecoboost engine is incredible, you would swear you are driving a large V8."

G W., TX (2012 Ford F-150)

"Very well built and reliable truck. Comfortable ride, like a car. Does a great job hauling a trailer and is well equipped for the job."
