We tested two versions of the Ford F-150 pickup: one with the new 5.0-liter V8 and the other with an EcoBoost turbocharged V6. Performance numbers for the two engines were nearly identical overall, but we liked the V8's sound better than the more high-tech V6's. Both of our trucks got the same fuel economy -- 15 mpg overall, which was then strong for the class.

What Owners Say

"Ecoboost engine has excellent power. Drives and rides really nice. Acceleration is top notch. Has the power to pull 6,000 pound camper."

Anonymous, IN (2013 Ford F-150)

"good get up and go handles well"

Dawn H., FL (2013 Ford F-150)

"The ecoboost engine is amazing. I frequently tow with this vehicle and there is no shortage of power or response when accelerating or climbing hills. Absolutely no problem crossing 10,000 foot passes at the speed limit while towing either the camper or a trailer with two tractors on it."

Charles S., CO (2013 Ford F-150)

"The acceleration is really good and the handling is OK for a truck. Gas mileage is not that good"

Anonymous, MA (2013 Ford F-150)

"Comfort Excellent ride Bad—-gas mileage —speed control on steering wheel (I take eyes off road to look down at steering wheel to make adjustments)"

Anonymous, TX (2013 Ford F-150)

"The acceleration is much like a car, however, the handling is that of a truck."

Anonymous, NC (2013 Ford F-150)

"After I stop and put it in reverse or another gear, It hesitates too long before it will actually move again. I would like to start backing up sooner than it lets me."

Paul B., MI (2013 Ford F-150)

"The electronic power steering is great. Much easier and no power steering pump/fluid to maintain. 4 wheel drive works well. Power is sufficient for towing even with the smaller V-6 engine and mileage is good for a truck of this size."

Lois J., TX (2013 Ford F-150)

"The acceleration is very capable, combined with good braking and very good handling, it is a tremendous help to avoid collisions."

Mark M., MO (2013 Ford F-150)

G N., BC (2013 Ford F-150)

Ann R., IN (2013 Ford F-150)

Ken L., MO (2013 Ford F-150)

Anonymous, VA (2013 Ford F-150)

"I use this vehicle for 5th wheel (30ft, 9000 lbs) towing. The EcoBoost (3.5l) engine and chassis works great. Had to update mirrors and tires (LTs) though, since original equipment was not up to handling the 5th wheel load (tires) and the mirrors were not safe. Has great Max Tow package!"

"Full of pep and responsive to driver input."

Don M., GA (2013 Ford F-150)

"The Eco-Boost engine in my F-150 has plenty of power to haul or tow anything I need to be hauling or towing. It also is a super comfortable truck to ride in and exhibits extremely good handling whether towing, hauling, or empty. It has really good acceleration and is very quiet when driving under all circumstances. It handles high winds better than my old F-250 did."

"Turbp boost is very impressive and responsive when needing to pass another car, even when pulling my boat"

Jim H., IL (2013 Ford F-150)

"The acceleration on this vehicle is very good. I have no problem with freeway on ramps."

James R., PA (2013 Ford F-150)

"IT accelerates more slowly now then when we first got it but it seems to pull off the line pretty well. The truck handles well but honeslty has a huge turning radius since well its a truck. Otherwise the ride is comfortable."

Anonymous, TX (2013 Ford F-150)

"Vehicle has the Ecoboost engine. This engine has a very bad hesitation when accelerating from a stop. I took it to the dealer during the warranty period for this issue and was told they couldn't reproduce the problem! This problem is a daily occurrence! This is the only issue I have had with the vehicle and still have which is very disappointing."

"F150 is a great truck to drive."

Anonymous, IA (2013 Ford F-150)

"The ECO boost 3.5 engine and drive train are excellent. Much more power than my old 8 cyl. engine. The truck accelerates better then most cars. When towing, I hardly know that I'm towing something big or small."

"It has a v6, but accelerates very smoothly and holds it on with other trucks. It has a good feeling of the road"

Jeff B., CA (2013 Ford F-150)

"drives well, sound system and phone perfect plus comfortable."

Larry A., CA (2013 Ford F-150)

"Love the handling of this truck. The EcoBoost engine is a marvel--so powerful. The handling is responsive and agile. I use it to pull a horse trailer and it does the job effortlessly."

Ellen M., CA (2013 Ford F-150)

"The vehicle handles good. However, after 2 trips to dealership, where the problem is still not diagnosed, upon accelerating it feels like truck gets in gear and won't change so even with foot off accelerator truck goes 5 or 6 mph on its own."

Anonymous, DE (2013 Ford F-150)

"The 3.5 liter has excellent performance. The fuel economy is decent but could be improved upon by offering a gear ratio that's a little slower. Normal highway speeds of 65 - 70 mph place the engine speed in an uneconomical, high torque demand area of the power band. I think that a ratio in the 3.73:1 to 4.00:1 would actually result in better economy. I get better mpg at 75 then I do at 62 - 65"

John M., MN (2013 Ford F-150)

"The mileage is at the low end (19 mpg) of what is advertised. The transmission has a spot (40-45 mph) when it seems to have trouble making up its mind what gear it should be in. There is too much hesitation from when you step on the gas to when the acceleration kicks in - this can be dangerous when coming onto an interstate in heavy traffic."

Anonymous, OH (2013 Ford F-150)

"For it's size, it handles very well. It's steering is quite precise and it doesn't wander about. Given the size of the engine, the acceleration is really great."

Ray S., ON (2013 Ford F-150)

"It is a very quit and conservative looking truck, yet it has great acceleration."

Ronald H., QC (2013 Ford F-150)

"I just finished a 4500 mile trip towing a 5000 lb. RV and this truck was outstanding. It handles very well when towing and though it is only a 5 liter engine it did a good job hauling my trailer around, even through mountains."

Stephen S., OK (2013 Ford F-150)

"Acceleration and handling is as good as my 5.0 mustang!"

Anonymous, CA (2013 Ford F-150)

"Terrific ride , very comfortable seats"

James K., TX (2013 Ford F-150)

"Very comfortable for long distance driving."

Anonymous, MI (2013 Ford F-150)

"Good comfort except would like handles above door on both sides like Honda. Ford has no handle above door on driver side and the passenger handle is forward near windshield. Honda and most other vehicles have handles above door. This gives you comfort to grab them even while driving."

"the f150 is super quite and has a great comfortable ride comparable to any high end sedan."

Ellen M., CA (2013 Ford F-150)

"This vehicle is a great ride. Forward side and rear visibility is excellent. Vastly better than the Subaru. It is very quite, and the seats are very comfortable. It handles nicely in rain and wind stoms and it feels safe. We use it for all long pleasure trips"

Raymond M., GA (2013 Ford F-150)

"The comfort of the seats far exceeds any pther vehicle that I have owned. In addition, the truck rides more like a car than it does as a truck. Extremely satisfied with the Ford F-150 Super Crew Lariat with the 3.5L EcoBoost Engine."

What Owners Say

"This truck is not loaded with gadgets inside, but it has the power to easily pull our boat or haul loads. It is quiet and has comfortabe seats for even an 8 hour drive. We have had no issues with any aspect."

Ann R., IN (2013 Ford F-150)

"I bargained well and picked up a $29k truck for less than $20k with a trade. The truck has pwr. windows, mirrors. A kicken 6 speaker stereo w/cd. I also got the toneau caver with it for !19,500.00/ The dealership was a good experience. Hold out you will get what you want."

"Automated rails don't always work."

Catherine B., IL (2013 Ford F-150)

"Have not had a moments problem with it. It starts, it runs, it hauls and it pulls. What else could a truck owner ask for?"

C L., FL (2013 Ford F-150)

"F-150 xl is an excellent truck. Great ride not a lot of fancy gadgets."

Anonymous, OH (2013 Ford F-150)

"I feel that I got great value for the money that I spent on the f150 so far it has been a very dependable truck to owne"

Wayne H., ON (2013 Ford F-150)

"The purchase value was quite good, but now at less than 100K miles, I have had significant problems with the sensors and electronics. Previously I had to replace the throttle-body sensor at about 60,000 miles. In the past 6 months I have spent $2500 due to failed sensors and electronics. My electronic power steering assist went out suddenly nearly causing an accident. That cost nearly $2000 to repair. Ford had a recall for this problem for 2014 vehicles, but has not been willing to extend it to 2013 vehicles. Ford is putting significant electronics in vehicles, but the electronics are not very robust and they fail."

Gary L., NM (2013 Ford F-150)

"Great all around truck for the money. Had a terrific rebate program when I purchased it so it was priced below competitive trucks. Very pleased with all aspects of my F150."

Brian B., GA (2013 Ford F-150)

"It is a basic transportation vehicle I use for my farm and work"

R G., OH (2013 Ford F-150)

"I bought a bare bones model for a work/ranch truck. Was able to order one without an expensive interior and options that I didn't' want."

Lois J., TX (2013 Ford F-150)

"Incredible price for what I got"

J A., BC (2013 Ford F-150)

"I paid $28,000 + or 1 going on 5 years ago. I could get $18,000+ for the vehicle today. This vehicle does not depreciate very much."

Gail T., GA (2013 Ford F-150)

"Good solid truck with adequate power and performance"

Anonymous, IL (2013 Ford F-150)

"For under $20k, new, it's a great full sized truck. Option package included hitch and 7 pin trailer connector, power windows, locks, upgraded sound system and Sync. V6, 300hp engine pulls my 3500# trailer every day with plenty of power. Even with 2000# payload and trailer it handles well."

Julia J., SC (2013 Ford F-150)

"I got an exceptional deal on this truck as a year-end close out. I paid $13,000.00 under sticker prices. It has the Eco-Boost engine and has plenty of power and gets reasonable gas mileage for a full sized four wheel drive truck. The truck is nothing if not a pleasure to own."

Doug T., TX (2013 Ford F-150)

"For the price they are getting for trucks, the transmission should not have issues. The rear parking sensors should continue to work, the door locks should continue working on all doors, the SYNC screen should not randomly go blank (and voice control is not good at all - many times have to repeat or completely give up). Brakes should last beyond 40K, tires should last beyond 40K, backup parking sensors should last beyond 40K, reverse light bulb sockets should not be intermittent, the A/C should be colder, paid a premium for the turbo engine which does not get the advertised mileage gains. Other than the look/styling of the truck, will not buy another Ford truck."

Anonymous, MO (2013 Ford F-150)

"Thought price was excellent, much cheaper than comparable toyota. Have had zero problems. Maintainence costs very reasonable."

Greg F., GA (2013 Ford F-150)

"Well built. I have not had any issues with the truck from the day I purchased it ... all I have done to it is regular maintenance."

Glenn F., WV (2013 Ford F-150)

"longbed pickup as a work vehicle handles like a dream, has lot of get and go, capable for pulling trailers. one drawback is head rest if looking thu rear cab window, can block some vision."

Cleo P., AL (2013 Ford F-150)

"Trucks are so handy and versatile, love my F150."

Stephen B., TX (2013 Ford F-150)

"My F150 is paid off and in great shape. I still can still ask a high price for resale or trade in even though it is 5 years old."

"cheaper than most SUV's of this size."

Gary L., OH (2013 Ford F-150)

"Held its value"

James K., TX (2013 Ford F-150)

"its everything that ford advertised."

Larry A., CA (2013 Ford F-150)

"I really like the F-150 but feel that since it is so popular they have really boosted the price. I also don't like having to pay for things that are now extra like fender well liners."

Francis F., OH (2013 Ford F-150)

"This model had all the things we were looking for and more. It was way more 'loaded' than the Chevy and Toyota that we test drove and was the most affordable of the three."

Jamie R., IA (2013 Ford F-150)

"Good, serviceable truck at a really good price. Does everything we need done with good fuel economy."

Anonymous, IN (2013 Ford F-150)

"This is the 2nd F150 that I've bought in the past 15 years or so. It is the Supercrew model with the largest V8 that Ford offered at the time. We use it to pull a 26 ft. RV and for the most part I don't even know that I'm towing it. The truck is very responsive and fun to drive. There is plenty of room inside and in the box."

Ray S., ON (2013 Ford F-150)

"I paid 38K out the door, so it was somewhat of an acceptable deal. It's got tow package, the ecoboost 6 cyl eng and the big cab. Air cond in real hot weather takes a long time to cool down. I'll have to say that all pickups seem to have the same problem."

Eugene R., CA (2013 Ford F-150)

"They were running a 'special' if you were trading in a Ranger. The truck had to be financed for at least 3 mos. through Ford credit, but had a significant markdown."

L L., PA (2013 Ford F-150)

"The mileage is at the low end (19 mpg) of what is advertised. The transmission has a spot (40-45 mph) when it seems to have trouble making up its mind what gear it should be in. There is too much hesitation from when you step on the gas to when the acceleration kicks in - this can be dangerous when coming onto an interstate in heavy traffic. At only 39K miles I had to have the rear differential pinion seal replaced - it leaked. It was covered under warranty but none the less, it should bot ha..."
