The Focus has an accomplished ride and good braking. It is agile and fun-to-drive, and it handles like a sports car. However, while overall crash protection is good, the Focus received a Poor in the IIHS side-crash test when tested without its optional side airbags. The Focus' 2005 freshening brought two new engines and a revised interior. But the quality of interior materials is low grade. Also, fuel economy is unimpressive.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

"Very harsh ride and abrupt shifting."

JEFF K., WA (2005 Ford Focus)

"Great handling seats fun to drive is focus st"

Anonymous, VA (2005 Ford Focus)

"This is the ZX model with the 2.2 litre engine and stick shift. The acceleration is outstanding."

ROBERT M., PA (2005 Ford Focus)

"acceleration is average handling is agile and firm"

TADEUSZ D., BC (2005 Ford Focus)

"From the factory, this car had slow acceleration and poor fuel economy. Both improved greatly when I replaced the original fine wire spark plugs with Autolite single platinum plugs. The spark plug swap added 4-5 mpg by itself. Another small improvement came with switching to synthetic oil. Handling is very good with this car. It can sneak in and out of the tightest parking places with relative ease and has a great turn radius."

JOHN E., IL (2005 Ford Focus)

"Handling on this car is so much better than other cars in its class. By far."

Eric S., CA (2005 Ford Focus)

"When new, it was doggy and the mileage was lower than expected. After replacing the original no-name plugs with Autolite platinum, the acceleration improved and mileage jumped by 5mpg. Handling has always been good enough for me. It has enabled me to avoid accidents over the 13 years I have owned this Focus."

John E., IL (2005 Ford Focus)

"it is a nice driving car.Nimble, under any conditions."

Tom V., OR (2005 Ford Focus)

"ST model drives and handles like a sports car."

Anonymous, OH (2005 Ford Focus)

"Decent power and acceleration for a small engine"

Tom N., AZ (2005 Ford Focus)

"With almost 100K miles, the car still drives great, nice solid handling, tight steering and taut ride."

L G., NJ (2005 Ford Focus)

"Great little car in every way!"

Donald D., CA (2005 Ford Focus)

"Excellent reliablity"

Anonymous, MD (2005 Ford Focus)

"Very quick with the larger 2.3. Great handling."

Nathan B., CO (2005 Ford Focus)

"Great handling, peppy acceleration."

Michael D., NV (2005 Ford Focus)

"Very peppy for such a low cost model."

Anonymous, NJ (2005 Ford Focus)

"Handles great summer or winter"

Anonymous, MI (2005 Ford Focus)

"It has a lot of "get up and go" and a smooth ride, so we have to watch our speed. Very nice ride, especially for an economy car."

Anonymous, CA (2005 Ford Focus)

"Acceleration is poor. Handling is not too bad. It has an excellent turning radius."

Anonymous, CA (2005 Ford Focus)

"I t is a joy to dive. It responds exactly as you expect to all inputs, steering, brakes, throttle, etc. It holds its course and goes exactly where you point it. Its small size and responsiveness make it great in tight spots."

Steven R., WA (2005 Ford Focus)

"Drives so much better than any other car in its class. And so much cheaper than others inits class, too."

Eric S., CA (2005 Ford Focus)

"Car handles very good with plenty of acceleration."

Barry W., WV (2005 Ford Focus)

"Super reliable and fast and peppy. But, it would only be fair to tell readers that this model year, Ford used a Mazda 3 power/drive train and that's why this car is so great!"

Philip D., NJ (2005 Ford Focus)

"As I previously mentioned, the interior space is great for a smaller car. Acceleration is just above average, handling is very good."

A P., DC (2005 Ford Focus)

"The car drives well. My wife uses it for short distances."

Anonymous, NY (2005 Ford Focus)

"Sporty acceleration and steering and handling"

Paul B., NJ (2005 Ford Focus)

"twelve years old and has never been in shop for anything except general maintenance (knock on wood.). Love this car."

Linda R., MI (2005 Ford Focus)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"I call it my "dog car." You can fold the back seats down and it makes a nice area for transporting dogs. But I don't take it on the freeway often, and I never take it on long trips. The handling and the ride are just not very comfortable. I'm only 5'3"; I think most men would be quite miserable riding or driving it."

MARCIA B., MO (2005 Ford Focus)

"Cheaply made (doors and rear gate are extremely cheap) Noisy both from road noise, and the blower fan is noisy in the winter time when engaged , bouncy in handling, weak acceleration."

Anonymous, IL (2005 Ford Focus)

"driver seat lost heating after just few months climate control is good noise inside cabin was a little above excepted level at beginning but after 6 years of driving was terrible. ride is agile"

TADEUSZ D., BC (2005 Ford Focus)

"Very comfortable driver's seat but steering wheel does not telescope out far enough so I have to reach for it making for tired arms on long trips. Cheep plastic parts i.e. sun glasses storage, latch for center console, etc."

PEGGY D., WA (2005 Ford Focus)

"Noisy, esp. in colder weather"

JAMES M., PA (2005 Ford Focus)

"Has quite a lot of noise from vibrations inside the cabin."

KURT P., NE (2005 Ford Focus)

"noisy ride which varies depending on whether all season tires are mounted (noisy) or winter tires (less noisy). Some viration noise from dashboard. Passenger door panel noisy due to vibration from some part within the door. As a result the car has a busy, tiring ride on vacation trips. As a result, prefer my Acura RDX when travelling."

Anonymous, WA (2005 Ford Focus)

"Car is just so poorly and cheaply made. Wind noise, uncomfortable seats and fabric, AC struggles to keep up."

CRAIG M., CA (2005 Ford Focus)

"It serves as a good reliable vehicle"

PETER W., ON (2005 Ford Focus)

"A/c doesn't cool as well as other cars I've had but from your Ratings I knew this before I bought it. Heating gets a "B" too."

MARK L., OH (2005 Ford Focus)

"The car is generally noisey. The air and heating work very fast and it has good pickup, but does not have cruise control so my husband does not want to take it on road trips where we could save money, but the noise is not condusive to road trips."

ROSEANNE G., CO (2005 Ford Focus)

"Being an older person the seats really sold me. The ease of getting in and out. I wish noise when driving was somewhat lower."

Anonymous, WI (2005 Ford Focus)

"The ride is great, comfortable - no compliants"

G M., CA (2005 Ford Focus)

"Very noisy engine noise, hubcaps chirped, upholstery on drivers seat wore through and I had to buy a seat cover to save foam, floor mat on drivers side also wore through."

PAUL B., NJ (2005 Ford Focus)

"the engine runs very loud"

Anonymous, PA (2005 Ford Focus)

"Seats are very firm Would like less cabin noise Stiff suspension making a somewhat rough ride"

Anonymous, SD (2005 Ford Focus)

"climate control selector switch brakes a lot"

Anonymous, MD (2005 Ford Focus)

"Seats are comfortable, and I feel very safe in the car - it has a good crash cage."

Anonymous, CA (2005 Ford Focus)

"When I bought it I had a bad back. Loved the seats as they were not too low or not too high. JUST RIGHT. In the last two years I have had replacements for left hip and left knee. Seats were a God send for these surgeries. I am now 80 years old and I find my car has the best seats for getting in and out. Friends and family have cars where seats are high and my daughter's car are so low."

B H., WI (2005 Ford Focus)

"Car is one of the most comfortable small cars I have driven or rode in."

Anonymous, MI (2005 Ford Focus)

"The ride quality is not good. I've never felt particularly comfortable making quick turns or in fast traffic on the highway."

Anonymous, MN (2005 Ford Focus)

"Seats are uncomfortable. engine noise is loud"

Anonymous, OH (2005 Ford Focus)

"Very noisy and seats are ok not great. Ride a little bumpy."

Barry W., WV (2005 Ford Focus)

"The Focus has surprisingly comfortable seats. Ride is a bit noisy and stiff but it is the perfect station wagon for hauling around my two Labradors. The squarish design provides lots of interior space and great head room for my large dogs. Too bad Ford stopped making the wagon after 2005."

A P., DC (2005 Ford Focus)

"Comfort is good. My wife who drives it is happy."

Anonymous, NY (2005 Ford Focus)

"Very quiet and smooth ride"

Paul B., NJ (2005 Ford Focus)

"The noise level inside the car is almost deafening - so much so that it is difficult to carry on a conversation with other passengers. It is almost the only source of dissatisfaction that I have with this car. Also, the seats are just OK in terms of comfort for long-distance driving."

Anonymous, CT (2005 Ford Focus)

"When I am driving I can't carry on a clear conversation"

Anonymous, CO (2005 Ford Focus)

"The car has been quite reliable and has requires little maintenance, except it has always shaken too much making it a little less comfortable and a little too noisy."

Anonymous, CA (2005 Ford Focus)

"Very uncomfortable driver seat"

Anonymous, WI (2005 Ford Focus)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Extremely high value car. It isn't perfect, but it is very good with very few downsides."

MICHAEL R., KS (2005 Ford Focus)

"This has been a very cheap car to drive. I have had very little repair infact only something with steering about 6 years ago. Everything else has been maintenance. I plan to drive it until it doesn't want to go no more."

Anonymous, MI (2005 Ford Focus)

"Not comfortable for long trips."

Anonymous, MI (2005 Ford Focus)

"I have 245,000 miles and repair cost are well under what I would expect."

GARY L., MD (2005 Ford Focus)

"Bought it second hand and it has stood up fairly well mechanically, structure/body it is terrible-rusted out structure parts are very evident under the car."

B B., QC (2005 Ford Focus)

"I felt it was overpriced, but my wife fell in love with it at first sight."

J P., AZ (2005 Ford Focus)

"Car has over 160,000 miles on it. Until recently the only real money spent was for normal maintenance"

Anonymous, PA (2005 Ford Focus)

"I bought this auto at the year end sale, with other promotions and paid less than sticker price for it before trade-in. Beyond that, the car has been fun to drive and has always gotten me to where I wanted to go without fail."

JOHN E., IL (2005 Ford Focus)

"Very good overall car for the money"

L G., NJ (2005 Ford Focus)

"OVERALL GOOD VALUE,FIT AND FINISH ISSUES WHEN NEW., TRIM OUT OF LINE: OBVIOUSLY HAVE TO KEEP ON TOP OF CORROSION; NON DEALER RUSTPROOFING IMPORTANT. CHEAP INTERNAL COMPONENTS.AS OF 2005. BUT OVERALL RELIABLE CAR."

Anonymous, QC (2005 Ford Focus)

"I researched cars for weeks before I started my search, had a list of local cars I wanted to see, was paying cash. I had done my homework. Problem: I lacked experience with dealer salesmen. Paid more than I needed to have done. However, the car met, and exceeded in some respects, all my qualifiers except age. it is 5 years older than the car I went to see. I am not disappointed in my purchase. The car is perfect for me. Main takeaway from experience: research, research, research! Know what"

EILEEN D., TN (2005 Ford Focus)

"Vehicle has been very reliable. Have only done maintenance."

Anonymous, CO (2005 Ford Focus)

"I bought that car brand new early in 2006. I don't quite understand this question. Why would I promote a 2005 car. Doubt anyone would buy one that old now!"

B H., WI (2005 Ford Focus)

"Still runs strong, has needed work through the years but even looks pretty good to this day, due to lucky external styling and good paint."

Tom N., AZ (2005 Ford Focus)

"Negotiated a fantastic price on this vehicle. Saved more than $3,500 off MSRP."

Eric S., CA (2005 Ford Focus)

"Have driven the car all over the country without any problems. Smooth ride and not to noisy. Drives like it's new."

Anonymous, GA (2005 Ford Focus)

"With over 215000 miles the car has had no major issues."

Anonymous, OH (2005 Ford Focus)

"good price for all the features on car."

Michael D., NV (2005 Ford Focus)

"The original purchase happened at Labor Day for the end of year sale, so there was $4000 off sticker. The car runs great. The only failed part since new was the alternator. Since then, tires, brakes, plugs, and other normal maintenance are all it has required. With synthetic oil, it starts easier during the -20F days in January. The car is absolutely reliable. It is getting older and somewhat rusty, but I still love it."

John E., IL (2005 Ford Focus)

"good value for the money. great mileage. very little maintenance required. at almost 200,000 miles the only things that detract are road noise and the interior of the wheels don't clear themselves of sticky snow, so they get seriously out of balance. you have to stop and clear it out or it can vibrate you right off the road."

Stephen D., MN (2005 Ford Focus)

"Price is great for what you get, assuming you buy at the right time and take the time to negotiate down he price to make it a good value."

Eric S., CA (2005 Ford Focus)

"The wagon gets good gas mileage and provides and immense about of cargo space for very little money."

Anonymous, AZ (2005 Ford Focus)

"Very functional vehicle, nice passenger space, huge trunk, good mileage, nice comfortable ride and competent handling"

Anonymous, NJ (2005 Ford Focus)

"This is a nimble car that is a pleasure to drive and ride in . It has been completely reliable. In its 134000 miles, it has never failed us."

Steven R., WA (2005 Ford Focus)

"200000 plus miles, original shocks, air filter, hoses, belts, engine, radiator, rides fine. Styling still relevant. Transmission failed twice."

Tom N., AZ (2005 Ford Focus)

"best car ever"

Linda R., MI (2005 Ford Focus)

"Great value for the money spent. Have had minimal repair costs - brakes, tires and oil changes. Runs well, good gas mileage and has good acceleration."

Stephen D., MN (2005 Ford Focus)

"For a 12 year old car, it was and still is an amazing value! Everything still works and the car runs great!"

Jared N., MA (2005 Ford Focus)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"Looks as good as a new car - there's not much difference in styling now-a-days."

MARIAN S., NJ (2005 Ford Focus)

"I like the styling which is why I brought the Focus in the first place"

G M., CA (2005 Ford Focus)
