Aside from a new crew-cab version, the GMC Sierra (and its Chevrolet Silverado twin) has changed little since its 1999 debut. Our tested Z71 Silverado had a stiff, choppy ride--other trim lines ride slightly better. Braking is adequate and fit and finish is unimpressive. The powertrain isn't as smooth as competing models from Toyota or Nissan.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"It's always had great acceleration, stopping, cornering and overall handling. I've never used it to haul a trailer so cannot judge that experience. I would not hesitate to haul a travel trailer or two-horse trailer with it, however."

Anonymous, VA (2004 GMC Sierra 1500)

"An absolute smooth drive. Even after 14 years, the ride is quiet. I enjoy towing loads with it. Very easy to handle with a horse trailer in tow."

"It's an eight cylinder and has plenty of power."

Anonymous, ID (2004 GMC Sierra 1500)

"With Qudrasteer it can turn on a tight radius for a pickup truck. At highway speeds it also hold tight to curves."

Steve R., TX (2004 GMC Sierra 1500)

Anonymous, CO (2004 GMC Sierra 1500)

"This is a truck that does everything one would expect from a truck. I bought it new and after twelve years there is no rust, corrosion, or any paint issues, and I live and drive it in Wisconsin, the rust belt. Have had absolutely NO mechanical issues of any kind."
