While this version of the GMC Terrain is not a bad vehicle, the competition had left it in the dust. While nice and roomy inside, the Terrain is less efficient than other five-passenger SUVs, but burns as much gas as larger, seven-passenger models. The 3.6-liter engine, shared with many other General Motors products, supplies quick acceleration times at the test track, but feels sluggish in routine driving.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Owner Satisfaction with:

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

“quiet on the road, no wind noise, powerful enough for my driving,”

JOHN B., FL (2013 GMC Terrain)

“Everything is good except acceleration is sluggish”

ANTHONY C., NY (2013 GMC Terrain)

“Acceleration with the four-cylinder engine is her Renda's. Also the truck is very hard to get in and out of”

SUSAN N., NJ (2013 GMC Terrain)

“When accelerating to pass, transmission down shifts too far and sticks at very high rpm until you back off the pedal. Very problematic until you get experience with this pattern.”

R R., OH (2013 GMC Terrain)

“great performance, nice handling, sport car like”

JOHN W., IL (2013 GMC Terrain)

“I feel GM has done an excellent job in balancing power and gas mileage with this vehicle. Even though it's a 4 cylinder, it's very easy to get up to speed on the highway. I have always felt rear wheel drive vehicles are better "driving" vehicles, but GM has closed the gap with the Terrain. It is certainly no sports car, but, compared to some other fwd cars, understeer is at a minimum.”

Anonymous, IN (2013 GMC Terrain)

“I had a 2013 that had a 4 cyl and it seemed under powered . I traded to another 2013 that was 6 cyl . Great car to drive”

Anonymous, IN (2013 GMC Terrain)

“4 cylinder engine /transmission does lots of shifting. Performs well but constant shifting is somewhat irritating. We live in Ozark Mountains so there is lots of ups and downs.”

Anonymous, AR (2013 GMC Terrain)

“Too many blind spots”

Anonymous, OH (2013 GMC Terrain)

“The turning radius of my Terrain is not as tight as other similar vehicles making it a bit harder to navigate into narrow parking spaces.”

Anonymous, NC (2013 GMC Terrain)

“Would like better acceleration. Handling is fine.”

JOHN H., NS (2013 GMC Terrain)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

“The driving experience is great and the seats are very comfortable.”

FREDERICK B., MT (2013 GMC Terrain)

“It definitely is not the 2013 Terrain's fault. But, this car was purchased to be my husband's "carpool car". In 2014 he slipped two discs in his neck and the way the seats are styled (narrow and curved in), his shoulders are forced to be rounded and pushed forward....something that is definitely not very comfortable for him. He now drives the car with not the best gas mileage to and from work.”

Anonymous, ID (2013 GMC Terrain)

“THE AIR VENTS DO NOT PROPERLY DIRECT THE AIR AND COULD OFFER MORE ADJUSTMENT OPTIONS”

WILLIAM H., MI (2013 GMC Terrain)

“The AC does not provide enough cooling to the back seats”

Anonymous, FL (2013 GMC Terrain)

“It is very noisy. Hard to hear while on cellphone (as passenger) Unable to have sunroof open for long due to wind noise”

Anonymous, WI (2013 GMC Terrain)

“firm and comfortable seats; firm ride and handling;”

Anonymous, FL (2013 GMC Terrain)

“I love the driving position of this SUV. It can adjusted for 4' people and 7' people and everyone is happy. I had knee problems with many other vehicles from a cramped driving position. No raised footwell on the drivers left foot area like most others in this class. The ColorTouch radio has excellent sound and speakers and the hands free calls are clear. For a 2013 model GMC should offer the option of updating so Pandora and other services can work directly rather than plugging into Blueto”

DAN K., KY (2013 GMC Terrain)

“I love the programmable power seats. I'm a fairly big guy and this feature has made getting in and out easy. I also love the comfort height of this vehicle.”

BEN C., GA (2013 GMC Terrain)

“Disappointedwith location of drivers side air vents. Left hand side can not be adjusted upward enough to provide adequate air flow for my wants. Right hand side vent flows air right at steering wheel, not driver”

Anonymous, AR (2013 GMC Terrain)

“The car is very noisy on asphalt roads that are not smooth.”

SYLVIA W., OR (2013 GMC Terrain)

“General road noise precludes talking over speaker while driving: back seat uncomfortable harsh ride: driver experience necessary to accommodate acceleration response for a 4 cylinder, the modern tailgating driver between ages 25-50 unable to change change in culture even after driving 2500 miles. Navigation has great safety feature that precludes driver from making destination or searches while moving. Seems desirable that a passenger should be able to configure the navigation or any other chang”

JOE B., AL (2013 GMC Terrain)

“This vehicle is missing a/c in the back seat so the comfort level is diminished by that.”

Anonymous, FL (2013 GMC Terrain)

“Defrosting the windshield is tricky. The heat either Sears your eyeballs or it freezes you depending on what vents you choose to use. If you choose a different setting, it is alright.”

TONY P., ON (2013 GMC Terrain)

“The heated seats have been a huge plus during northeastern winters. The AC is a bit temperamental and took a bit of fiddling to find the "sweet spot" in the settings for comfortable temperature control.”

EDWARD F., MA (2013 GMC Terrain)

“Really hard to get the seatbelt buckled. Can't reach dash or glove box when buckled in. Not enough room for purse.other items I carry.”

ELSIE S., KS (2013 GMC Terrain)

“More adjustment in seats a little getting in drivers side.”

Anonymous, FL (2013 GMC Terrain)

“Very quiet inside from traffic noise and loud squawk boxes from the young crowd Nice comfortable seats and air conditioning”

GARY B., ON (2013 GMC Terrain)

“Had to replace back window wiper. Ride is harsh and bumpy. Did not get advertised gas mileage. Less mpg than expected.”

J K., NJ (2013 GMC Terrain)

“I wish that it had air vents for the back passengers. It takes quite a while for the rear seat passengers to get comfortable and the front seat passengers begin to get to the extreme of the desired temperature. In example, when it is hot, the front seat passengers are adequately cooled, bordering on cold while the back seat passengers are still quite uncomfortable.”

Anonymous, IN (2013 GMC Terrain)

“Need back seat heat and AC vents”

- S., MI (2013 GMC Terrain)

“Vents dont move as much a needed. difficult to get air in front seats and rear seats at the same time. No rear vents. No dual control.”

JIMMY S., AR (2013 GMC Terrain)

“the interior rattles... the dash and overhead rattle... it's very annoying. The heated seats are terrible. with both the bottom and back heated seats on the heat only comes up to the very lower part of my back...”

Anonymous, MA (2013 GMC Terrain)

“The air condiitoner has a tendency to stink - both inside the cabin and outside - it smells moldy. They added a fan to dry it out, but it doesnt seem to do enough to get rid of the stink.”

Anonymous, IL (2013 GMC Terrain)

“The air vents should have a 360 design as air flow/circulation as currently designed is poor.”

C I., ON (2013 GMC Terrain)

“EXCELLENT I FEEL SAFE WHEN DRIVING.”

Anonymous, OR (2013 GMC Terrain)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

“Solid construction. Excellent quality. Even my engineer friends from Toyota are impressed.”

DAN K., KY (2013 GMC Terrain)

“It was a little pricey but has turned out to be a good car over all!”

RONALD H., IL (2013 GMC Terrain)

“EXCELLENT”

Anonymous, OR (2013 GMC Terrain)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

“It looks a little too boxy for my liking”

Anonymous, AR (2013 GMC Terrain)

“The Terrain has a great unique look that distinguishes it from other cars. The back seat has a tremendous amount of adjustable room and the back fits a good sized pile of equipment for travel.”

EDWARD F., MA (2013 GMC Terrain)

“Side driver seat controls to close to driver door, making it hard to adjust seat position due to hard to get hands between seat and door.”

Anonymous, SC (2013 GMC Terrain)

“distinctive styling. No question it's a GMC Terrain.”

JOHN B., FL (2013 GMC Terrain)

“cute”

ROBERT S., GA (2013 GMC Terrain)

“The shiny accents around the gear shift area should be matte to avoid the glaring reflection from the sun.”

C I., ON (2013 GMC Terrain)

“Styling is great.”

FREDERICK B., MT (2013 GMC Terrain)

“Our GMC Terrain is a Denali series. It has all the bells and whistles. It looks so sharp for a SUV. The chrome wheels and the chrome accents make it look so good. I paid extra to get red and it is a great looking vehicle.”

GARY D., OK (2013 GMC Terrain)

“Very stylish vehicle”

Anonymous, MD (2013 GMC Terrain)

“looks great. get compliments on color and stile.”

Anonymous, KY (2013 GMC Terrain)

Percentage of owners who would definitely purchase that same vehicle again. Owner-satisfaction Ratings are determined by the percentage of those who answered "definitely yes" to the question asked by the Consumer Reports Annual Auto Survey "Considering all factors (price, performance, reliability, comfort, enjoyment, etc.), would you get this car if you had to do it all over again?". If we don’t have sufficient data, a similar model might be used to form the owner-satisfaction score.
