While this iteration of the Honda Accord remains an excellent midsized sedan overall, gas mileage is not as good as that of the previous model. This Accord still has a generous backseat, however both the four- and six-cylinder versions are more powerful than before. Stability control was made standard in all trim levels and crash-test results are impressive. We tested both a four-cylinder LX-P model and a six-cylinder EX-L.

Reliability History Reliability History The reliability charts are based on responses on hundreds of thousands of vehicles from our latest Annual Auto Survey. Consumer Reports subscribers reported on any serious problems they had with their vehicles during the past 12 months that they considered serious because of cost, failure, safety, or downtime, in any of the trouble spots included in the table below. The results are presented relative to the average model that year. Extra weight is given to the more serious areas such as major engine or transmission problems. Based on this data and further analysis, we predict reliability for the latest year. N/A indicates that we did not receive a large enough sample size to provide data for a specific year. An X indicates that the vehicle was not manufactured for a specific year.

The battery was OK and the only problem that was found at that time was that the rear brakes needed new pads and calipers. On May 8 the car would not start and made no attempt to start. I called AAA and their technician determined that the battery was good and the starter was likely to be bad. That night a tow truck arrived and took my car to my Honda dealership. The next day the service department determined that the starter was bad and I approved their recommendation to replace the starter. They also did the work needed on the rear brakes. The new starter is working well."

"Due to a known issue with the 'Eco' engines fouling spark plugs and seal leakage, my engine failed twice. Honda did not notify me prior to the failures when they knew of the issue even when my car was only serviced at a Honda dealership. Found our through my own research there was a class action lawsuit for the failures. After the first failure, Honda 'patched' the issue hoping to get past the lawsuit settlement extended warranty period. My second failure for the same seal failure occurred within a year and the care was then out of the extended warranty period by a couple of months. Honda didn't want to fix the problem without me fully paying for the repair ($2,500-$3,200). I argued against this charge finally coming to a settlement with me paying $500 for a defect they knew about for years. I will not be purchasing another Honda product due to their in actions and not standing behind their manufacturing which had a known defect...I have purchased 5 Honda's in the past. They should have told me and taken necessary warranty actions during my many dealer visits for all the normal maintenance activities."

"The check engine light came on and the car was running rough. I was told to have the car towed to the dealer and not drive it. There was a ring problem on one bank of cylinders allowing oil to pass and foul the plugs. The dealer informed me that I needed a ring job which would cost approximately $3500. This was something about the V6 engine. I advised I would check it out and let them know. I checked online and found that this problem was the subject of a class action lawsuit a few years ago but I was not told even though I have had all service done at the dealer and this is my third Honda bought at this dealer. They called Honda and after much discussion they agreed to pay approx. 2/3 of the cost and I paid approximately $1300. I was without the car for 3 weeks. To settle the suit the agreement was to extend the warranty to 8 years but I was past that. I have really enjoyed this car but I wont be buying another Honda especially now that the Accord doesn't come with the V6 motor. Bottom line the dealer should have told me as I have had this car regularly serviced and have done the EXTRA things like timing belts, etc as they recommended. Again I want to say that overall I have really enjoyed this car but I wont be buying another Honda Accord."

Anonymous, TN (2009 Honda Accord EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"The car started running rough and was towed to the dealer per their advice. The car had to have new rings in one bank of the V6 engine as it was blowing oil past the rings and fouling the plugs. It turns out that there had been a service bulletin put out several years ago that I had not heard about regarding this problem. After several calls to Honda they agreed to pay 2/3 of the repair cost which was substantial for a 10 year old car. I paid approximately $1400 to fix. I had always had the car serviced at the dealer and had also purchased two previous cars from this dealer. Needless to say i was upset as I loved this car and anticipated more service than it turned out to be. It was a problem with the V6 motor I found out from forums and chat rooms. I have always thought of Honda as very reliable but I wont be buying another. Next time I go with Toyota."

"Several warning lights have will display, and usually within a day or two reset. My independent mechanic who only works on Honda said the ECM Software needed to be updated. The local Honda Dealer said it was up do date, but they also installed a Battery that was not the correct one for my car, then argued with me that it was. Not until it Failed less than a year later, and AAA came to the same conclusion that I did, the Dealer replaced the Battery with the correct one. I've owned Honda's since my first one I purchased New in 1978. I've had problems with my last two Honda's, a 2007 Fit I purchased new in 2006, and within the first 15,000 miles had ignition problems, stumbling, and misfires, which stumped 3 great independent mechanics, and 4 Dealers. Finally it was determined thousands of miles later, and numerous trips to the mechanics and 4 dealers with the final dealer finally checking the coilpacks (after I had already suggested this to a couple mechanics and 3 Dealer Service Departments) I felt this should have been taken care of under warranty, since I had this problem from the first year. The BEST (HA!) Honda would do is spilt the difference. This is a far cry from Honda Service I'd come to expect, and was more like the lack of service American Manufacturers would give in the 1970's and 80's. Both my Fit and the Accord I have now, are the only two Honda's that have had very disappointing Fuel Economy. As low as 15 MPG in the Fit (average about 25 MPG), and as low as 12 MPG (average about 18 MPG) with the Accord 4 Cylinder! Twice when my Fit was in the shop, I rented 4 Cylinder Accords with the CVT Transmissions, and both got around 30 MPG. My Accord was in the shop for repairs do to a hit and run collision, and the Nissan Sentra I had for a rental car, consistently got 34+ MPG. Just this past week, a friend was telling me that his Fully Loaded (Cargo) Gas F-150 Ford Van was getting about 19 MPG, in the rain, hydroplaning and a lot of uphill driving. Recently, a friend loaned me her Subaru Forrester All Wheel Drive SUV for a day, and that not only had more power, a better ride, and got over 29 MPG! Talking to the Dealer about my poor mileage with the Accord, they just seem surprised, and do nothing about it. The poor mileage with my Fit, I believe was associated with the coil pack issue, but Honda would never acknowledge. I believe this will be my Last Honda. There may be a Hyundai or Kia for my next car."

Anonymous, CA (2009 Honda Accord EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"I had major oil leakage inside motor that was getting inside spark plugs. $1400 to repair. After researching the car, there was a history of oil burning with the car. A quart of oil burns every two thousand miles. There were many complaints but there was never a recall."

Anonymous, TX (2009 Honda Accord EX 3.5-L V6)

"My vehicle was one of those tagged as potentially having an oil consumption problem but Honda would only cover about 1/4 of the cost to fix it so I did not have it done. It has now turned into a leak and I have to put in about 1 quart of oil every fill up of gas. They should have fixed it as it was a defect."

Anonymous, (2009 Honda Accord Unsure Unsure)

"At about 95,000 miles found oil on driveway.Took an excellent &experinced mechanic 3 try's to fix.Was an old leaky gasket that officially needed a whole new expensive part.Honda does not sell this gasket separately from the metal part.My great mechanic jerry-rigged a seal with some silicone (?) been fine since"

"Relatively high mileage on the Accord. We have had low oil issues for at least 5 years. No oil light to indicate problems, but just the motor racing when the oil level gets low. When recall issued, our mileage was too high for the fix, but the problem was much older, and should have been covered"

Erin F., WI (2009 Honda Accord LX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Recall occurred in Honda's 6 cylinder cars for excessive oil consumption and a class action lawsuit out of those issues, which Honda lost. There was later a warning of possible similar issues by Honda in their 4 cylinder cars (I believe specifically Accords were having such issues). I ended up having the same issue in my 4 cylinder Accord. Honda made me prove sufficient maintenance on my Accord since 2009 and when I did, Honda paid around 90% of the cost to address fixing leaking valve gasket se"

"The car is burning oil as there is no evidence of leakage under the car. The dealer recommended testing for where the oil leak was and suggested it may need major engine work. We replaced the PCV Valve ourselves and are checking to see if that fixed the problem."

Anonymous, MT (2009 Honda Accord EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"The head gasket leaks. Rather than repair it which my mechanics say will be very costly, he recommends that I just have my oil checked and refilled more often. So far, this is the better way to go since I plan to replace this car with a 2019 model. I'm leaning toward a Honda or Toyota Hybrid this time."

"Despite purchasing latest upgrade, system is not consistently accurate and frequently provides wrong directional information"

Charles T., VA (2009 Honda Accord EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The Honda Navigation system deck/player (where the navigation map CD is inserted) is mounted inside the trunk under the rear deck (next to the speakers. It worked famously for 4 or 5 years. Then map portion of the system would occasionally (3 or 4 times a year) stop working. The error message would say something to the effect of Disc reader error. Consult your dealer or Cannot read disc. Consult your dealer. But then, the next day it would work again. Upon receiving the error messages, I investigated the navigation deck (in the trunk), and I noticed it was EXTREMELY hot to the touch. Over time, the failure (error) happened more and more frequently. (Note: when the system wasn't working, the only thing that I was able to access through the onscreen Navigation System was the Trip Computer...everything else was disabled [greyed out]). I had replaced the old CD with the updated when Honda would notify me that the new update was available. Finally, the navigation system stopped working entirely (this was around 2016...so, it was approximately 7 or 8 years old (remember, I bought this car brand new). I am a stickler about taking my car in to the dealership for regular maintenance (you can ask First Texas Honda in Austin, Texas). When I asked the service team about my navigation system, I was basically told that there was nothing that could be done...the repair costs would be exorbitant...upwards of $4,000. Seriously? I was told that I might be able to find something after-market, which I quickly declined. Apparently, so much of the vehicle itself is tied to the navigation system, it would be nearly impossible to install a new system and calibrate everything. What a HUGE disappointment. I recently went out on a limb and purchased the map update (just praying that it would miraculously, somehow, fix the problem). Sadly, when I ejected the old map disc, I heard grinding and churning noised coming from the deck. The disc would not come out of the deck. I tried repeatedly, until the disc finally came out...along with a part of the deck that had deteriorated over time (flat, round piece of metal). Needless to say, I knew that I was out of luck at this point. This car has never been wrecked or driven roughly. I am a proud and fussy owner of my car (I need it to last me, because a new car payment is not within my budget). The bottom line is this: I believe that the navigation deck is of poor quality, and it over heats with time, degrading and deteriorating the components within it. It can't be repaired, and I suppose I will never again purchase another car with on-board navigation."
