Owner Reported Trouble Spots

The Reliability score is based on our latest subscriber survey of 2016 Honda Accord owners. The owner comments describe problems respondents experienced with this vehicle.

In-car Electronics

CD or DVD players, radio, speakers, GPS, communication system (e.g., OnStar), display screen freezes or goes blank, phone pairing (e.g. Bluetooth), voice control commands, steering wheel controls, portable music device interface (e.g., iPod/MP3 player), backup or other camera/sensors.

What Owners Say

Android Auto

"Android Auto occasionally shuts off the sound to the speakers in the Honda Accord. I have to re-start the car engine to restore sound to the speakers. Note that I have Android Auto and Honda Link on my Accord."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Honda Accord EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Apple CarPlay

"The in car entertainment system assumes I want to play my apple music, which I rarely do. Frequently I switch to sirius xm or fm and it switches back to apple music. Causes more of a distraction than it was to resolve. Additionally on the interface (non apple play) the buttons are hard push when in a travelling car in traffic, again making it more of a distraction than old fashion knobs."

Robert C., CA (2016 Honda Accord EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"During apple car play navigation, music from an Ipod playlist would start after every nav insruction"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Honda Accord EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Just clunky! Sometimes it does, sometimes it does not"

John S., NY (2016 Honda Accord EX-L 3.5-L V6)
Backup or other camera/sensors

"The backup camera became dislodged from its mount and the mount had to be replaced"

Daniel S., VA (2016 Honda Accord EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Backup camera came loose and was replaced"

Anonymous, IN (2016 Honda Accord LX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"backup camera became dislodged from the rear and stopped providing clear video of backing up. Even though the vehicle was still under warrenty Honda initially insisted it was not covered. They relented and fixed for free."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Honda Accord EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Back up camera came loose, causing darker video."

Richard P., MI (2016 Honda Accord EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"the camera stopped working it was replaced by the dealer"

Anonymous, MA (2016 Honda Accord Touring 3.5-L V6)

"Dashboard screen is not easily visible in sunlight conditions. Angle of screen is wrong, screen is too faint"

Anonymous, ON (2016 Honda Accord Unsure 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The display for the backup camera blacked out over a period of time. For a while it seemed to have bad signal quality, then the link seemed to cut out completely. By my eye, it would seem that an analog connector somewhere got disconnected (vibration, maybe?). Whatever the cause, the Honda technicians at the dealer said it would cost a fairly large amount to fix, and we do know how to use our rear view mirrors, so we're not interested in fixing it at this time. It was somewhat disappointing that that system would 1) fail fairly early into the life of the vehicle, 2) not be covered automatically through certified pre-ownership, and 3) not have some more intelligent form of debugging than "we're going to throw that part out and put a new one in, so you have to buy a new part", given that I watched it die gradually and it really looked exactly like the sort of problem I would expect to see if a VGA cable was slowly wiggling its way out of a connector. As I did the debugging through my wife who is somewhat less aggressive and somewhat less electrically inclined than I am, I didn't confront the dealer like this at the time."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Honda Accord Unsure 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The backup camera, the physical camera itself, is held in place by a plastic clip. The clip broke, but Honda won't sell you just the clip. You have to buy the entire camera assembly, including the camera for $$$."

Anonymous, NC (2016 Honda Accord EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Camera just quit working one day. Called dealership to have it looked at but did not feel like paying $129 just to look at it and then have to pay repair cost. Waiting until I have the money to fix it."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Honda Accord EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Display screen freezes up

"Phone calls (bluetooth) disconnects frequently & phone calls are dropped and the display screen freezes up. The bluetooth volume is very loud and distracting. Dealer tells me nothing can be done about the high volume. Software was updated, still having frequent problems (daily)"

Michael P., CA (2016 Honda Accord Sport 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Screen often changes wihout command and difficult to change back"

Joel N., FL (2016 Honda Accord EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Problems with Android Auto and the Honda Display screen. Not fully compatible even though Honda supports Android Auto"

Anonymous, TX (2016 Honda Accord EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"This happens quite often when starting the car. Most of the time I have to pull over, turn the vehicle off than back on again and 90% of the time it works. As for the navigation I quite often get a message that it can't access maps. At this point I just live with it."

William U., NJ (2016 Honda Accord Touring 3.5-L V6)

"If radio station was changed the display did not show it"

Anonymous, OH (2016 Honda Accord Touring 3.5-L V6)

"Have to turn off ignition and restart to fix the problem. Has happened a couple of times in the past 2 1/2 years."

Tony A., CA (2016 Honda Accord EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"At time, the display screen does not respond or flickers (hesitates)."

Hermine C., TX (2016 Honda Accord LX-S 3.5-L V6)
Display screen goes blank

"The radio unit was replace in spring 2018"

Anonymous, MA (2016 Honda Accord EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The display went entirely blank. We took it to the dealership - they took i back, did something, and it was working when we got it back. The problem has not occurred again."

Karl J., TX (2016 Honda Accord EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"All screen access goes dead. So no audio, Navi, phone Bluetooth, radio, backup camera"

Anonymous, ON (2016 Honda Accord Touring 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"This problem has existed for several years and can be fixed by rebooting when you restart the car. The problem cannot be replicated by a Honda professional, so they can try to troubleshoot it only if it is taken to the dealer without turning off the engine--not always convenient, and the first time I did this nobody with the appropriate training was at work. The next time, they decided what new component was needed, and they asked me to pay $100 good-faith because the vehicle was out of warranty (component and labor cost many times that amount which they wrote off). The repair worked fine for a while, and then it decided to play the same game, and of course I had another appointment. When this happens the radio and other audio components do not function and the screen fails to display some important information. I'm waiting for the next time it happens, with hope that I won't be on my way to something important. Now I am wondering if it is somehow triggered by extremes in temperature."

Anonymous, (2016 Honda Accord EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"display screen goes dark and will come back after a few minutes. Windows and sunroof open on their own at times and a few times car would not start."

Anonymous, OH (2016 Honda Accord EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Accord has 2 screens, both go blank about 5 times a month, it was the same problem with my old 2014 Accord. With both cars, the whole system would suddenly stop working requiring full stop, shut off the engine and restart, if you are on the highway, you must take the next exit to do so, very annoying"

Dror A., NY (2016 Honda Accord EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"There are places where the current MPG and MPG for this tank are supposed to show up - on occasion (probably once every 2 months) these are blank. Just an annoyance."

Michael R., MD (2016 Honda Accord EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Honda dealership has had to factory reset the in-dash infotainment screen twice now- stopped working for no apparent reason. Car itself was fully functional, but did lose the backup camera when the display was not working"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Honda Accord EX-L 3.5-L V6)
External music device interface (e.g., smart phone, MP3 player)

"Syncing GPS on phone with Bluetooth. Can't consistently get voice directions. Adding a new phone was very difficult. I had my first phone added by a technician at the dealer and even he had difficulty. Hands free is often distracting and I can't always answer calls without picking up my phone. Not a user friendly system"

Elizabeth S., MA (2016 Honda Accord 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Apple car play and the navigation system sometimes go off line. A restart of the car is required to get these back on line"

Anonymous, MA (2016 Honda Accord Touring 3.5-L V6)

Hardware replacement

"clock would auto reset top a specific/s are time every time the car was restarted"

Anonymous, MI (2016 Honda Accord EX-L 3.5-L V6)
In-dash navigation system (GPS)

"1. Navigation System does not load up the maps. 2. The Navigation System frequently does not know where it is"

Anonymous, SC (2016 Honda Accord EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Map is continually incorrect as to location. Pinpoints my location 2-3 miles from actual location. Then suddenly will revert to correct location. "Where to," is extremely difficult to use. Old system of 2012 model much simpler to use and accurate. Had to order paper manual which also is of little help"

Anonymous, CT (2016 Honda Accord EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"it's worthless. Biggest problem is that it doesn't remember where it was parked. Thus, it takes 3-10 minutes after you start the car for the satellites to figure out where you are and hence where to go"

Bob R., WA (2016 Honda Accord EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Kept losing satellite. Dealer replaced antenna"

Anonymous, MA (2016 Honda Accord Touring 3.5-L V6)

"Extremely difficult to adjust voice level of the GPS"

Joel N., FL (2016 Honda Accord EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"ry slow to come on-line i.e. warm up. The response is very slow. Not enough map size to be able to anticipate cross streets. The result is that we most frequently use our smartphones for navigation."

Eric F., CA (2016 Honda Accord EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The navigation system lost the signal and I was left lost"

Anonymous, IL (2016 Honda Accord EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"It's inaccurate often. I use the GPS On my phone instead"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Honda Accord EX 3.5-L V6)

"1. Honda's touch system is almost impossible for the passenger to use as there is no control dial (as in a BMW iDrive). Difficult using touch screen while car is in motion, even for something as simple as the volume control on radio. 2. Honda dealer (before sale) told us the car has Garmin navigation system. New destination addresses can be entered into Garmin units at any time. Honda instead locks out entry of a new address, placing the driver and passengers in danger by requiring them to pull over to the side of the freeway and place the car in park, at which time an address can be added to the route. Makes the unit unacceptable. Honda has no interest in resolving this, but they should provide a software update and FIX IT. Also, three months after applying a map update given by Honda, Nav system gives cannot unlock maps error message every time car is driven. Pressing OK makes the message go away, and unit opens the old map. Honda provides no support for this problem. DO YOU KNOW A GOOD ATTORNEY INTERESTED IN CLASS ACTION?"

Daniel B., CA (2016 Honda Accord EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Phone pairing (e.g., Bluetooth)

"Find it very difficult to use. Answering hands free is inconsistent and distracting to do. I especially have difficulty syncing my phone GPS with Bluetooth. Can't get the voice directions. Also just got new phone and found it very hard to add it. Originally the dealer had to do it. Other problem: Twice all the warning lights came on indicating every possible problem! Had to take it to dealer both times ( computer problem) and eventually they had to reset the system as advised by Honda headquar"

Elizabeth S., MA (2016 Honda Accord 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The voice command system stopped recognizing my voice despite having the same phone. At the dealership, they deleted my phone from the car memory and we re-paired the phone with the car. So far, this has worked"

Anonymous, AZ (2016 Honda Accord LX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Using voice commands to make a call only works 50% of the time. And with that, only 50% of the calls that go through go to the car speaker. The other half you have to hit TRANSFER on the screen while the person on the other end is screaming "Hello?""

Renee W., CA (2016 Honda Accord Touring 3.5-L V6)

"Not a very intuitive or reliable process. Very frustrating"

Michael V., NJ (2016 Honda Accord EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Does not always pair to the Bluetooth in my Accord. Not sure of the reasons for this."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Honda Accord EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Phone pairing is very unreliable. Solmetimes will pair after 15-20 minutes of trying."

Eric F., CA (2016 Honda Accord EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Phone calls automatically get answered but the system. I cannot ignore or cancel calls. I cannot see who is calling on the dashboard, I have to look at my phone and take my eyes completely off the road."

Anonymous, ND (2016 Honda Accord EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"All part of the mess that they call an Infotainment System. It's buggy software. You can't change which phone is paired easily -- it doesn't forget the last paired phone, even after turning the car off. Sometimes it will also just drop a pairing."

"Very difficult to operate. Disconnects from Bluetooth often"

Anonymous, LA (2016 Honda Accord Touring 3.5-L V6)

"The bluetooth device will no show up to connect most of the time. Sometimes in suddenly connects after up to an hour. I can answer the call and it will still be ringing in the car, while the caller can hear the ringing. It won't always hang-up or disconnect, or has a mind of it's own as to when it will disconnect. Service always says that they can't duplicate the problem, even with video's we've taken showing the problems. The problem started when purchased, however we were constantly told that it was just our cell phone (which we've since replaced and still have the same problem) because theirs worked fine. It can go a month or so of 0 connection and then work fine for a few days/weeks and then we're back where we started. The top screen doesn't always light up or show the control button changes being made below. The bluetooth will tell me that my phone bluetooth is not turned on, however it's the car device that is not engaging."

Anonymous, (2016 Honda Accord Unsure 3.5-L V6)

"The entire infotainment system is horrible! It frequently crashes and gives an error message in poorly written broken English. Voice commands are bad; blue tooth pairing is clunky; everything is bad."

Anonymous, NC (2016 Honda Accord EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"Apple Car Play would sometimes pair the phone, other times would not. When Apple Car Play did not work, Bluetooth did not always pair the phone either. If I don't plug in Apple Car Play, Bluetooth will not always work. Sometimes the whole system would not work. Would see Tuner is not working which meant the electronic system did not work; radio, etc."

Radio

"Radio does not work properly. It fades in and out & seems like a software issue as it seems unrelated to reception of the radio signal"

Michael P., CA (2016 Honda Accord Sport 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The AM and FM stations will stop receiving a signal yet the satellite radio still works. The radio has been replaced but the problem still exists. I have to shut the car off to reboot the system to make it operational again. Otherwise the car is great"

"It would not tune the radio outside of the Atlanta area, where I purchased it. It was replaced by Honda without charge"

Anonymous, GA (2016 Honda Accord EX-L 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The User Interface in this radio system is truly poor. Lack of rotary volume control knob is the number one issue. This slider systems is crap. Too many screens to simply switch from AM to FM is another. On other cars like the Chevy Cruze, you have soft buttons that can actually choose AM or FM stations directly. Not on this car. It takes 5 steps to switch from one bluetooth (my wifes) phone to mine. In my 2011 Accord I could do that with one voice command. Although touchscreens are defa"

"The software for the infotainment system is crap all around! Sporadic error message Tunner (sic) has stopped working will display, and then the entire system is unusable -- radio, bluetooth, etc. Factory reset doesn't consistently fix it. Bob R., WA (2016 Honda Accord EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"System stopped recognizing voice commands altogether. Had to delete and re-pair my phone at the dealership. Even when it does recognize my voice, it never correctly recognizes the name of an entry in my Contacts. It usually comes up with multiple names - most of which don't sound anything like what I said. Thus I have to go through a separate step to pick from a list. Sometimes it thinks I'm speaking numbers and spits out some digits on the screen. So then I have to start all over. Further"

Body Integrity

Squeaks, rattles, wind noises, loose or cracked seals and/or weather-stripping, air and water leaks.

What Owners Say

Air or water leaks

"Water was getting into the body through a tail light. Gallons of water would seep in and pool into the spare tire compartment. While driving I could hear the water sloshing around. I took it to a Honda dealership and they changed the weather stripping on the trunk, but that did not fix the problem. Every time it rained, water would collect in the spare tire compartment and Honda had no idea how it was getting in. My car began to smell of mildew and mold so I sold it."

"Parking brake lever on caliper seized"

Anonymous, ON (2016 Honda Accord Touring 3.5-L V6)

"Parking brake cable pulls a lever on the rear caliper to activate the brake. Corrosion and/or dirt gets into the caliper mechanism, so the lever seizes in the brake-on position. Per my independent mechanic, the solution is to replace the caliper. Problem showed up at 3 years/40K miles on my 2016 Accord. Dealer won't cover the caliper replacement under warranty, claims it is due to heavy salt use on winter roads and is not a "defect". I had the exact same problem at 3 years/100K miles on my previous (2015) Accord, which is an almost-identical car. Incidentally, due to coronavirus, I have not had the problem repaired. I pried on the seized lever to release the parking brake, and wrapped a piece of paper around the brake handle by the driver's seat to remind me not to use it."

Transmission Minor

Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.

What Owners Say

Rough shifting

"The auto trans downshifts rather roughly resulting in unwanted engine braking. As a result, passengers feel like they are being shoved forward. The "S" mode is horrible. It doesn't seem to know when to upshift. And when downshifts, it results in extreme engine braking, giving the car a very herky jerky ride"

"Back up camera stopped working. Software fix did not work. Camera was replaced. No problem since replacement"

Stan G., VA (2016 Honda Accord EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"System is very buggy; frequent false positives, occasional false negatives in its collision detection. Nearly rear ended 3 times due to system going off despite lack of threat, in once case total lack of anything on or near the road ahead of us for hundreds of feet in a 35mph zone. Complaints to Honda have been met with responses of its working as intended. Nothing is wrong. We even bought a dash cam to record the events. This lead to an awkward conversation with a Honda rep where after being shown the footage they paused for a while, before trying to explain how a vehicle that had turned into a parking lot 30 seconds in front of our car clearly was a valid collision threat. Forward collision system has also responded to: oncoming traffic across a 40' median, oncoming traffic on the other side of a permanent barrier with a lane width center median on each side, stopped cross street traffic, traffic on a frontage road, & traffic on wide winding roads (this one is the most understandable). We live in Austin Texas, and our streets are not narrow. Brought the car to our Honda dealership, where we bought it, a couple times for inspection of the system. Apparently everything was fully functional, properly calibrated, and up to date in its software. We have since turned off the system, false positives were happening at least monthly, sometimes daily. The forward collision detection system was why we bought the car in the first place. We will not be buying a Honda again."

Sebastian W., TX (2016 Honda Accord EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"System doesn't work under 40mph, which makes it useless for most metropolitan commuting. System also doesn't work well; in clear daylight with light traffic and newly resurfaced roadway with fresh lines works about 90-95% of the time, dropping rapidly from there. We have a dash cam to back this up. System is now turned off most of the time as I prefer not to have the steering wheel suddenly jerk towards oncoming traffic, vehicles in other lanes, or off the road. System was inspected by our Honda dealership and pronounced fully functional. We will not be buying a Honda again."

Sebastian W., TX (2016 Honda Accord EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"On/Off switch keeps going off. Had to dealer 3 times and they said it was functioning properly. When it went out and wouldn't come on I drove to the dealer and showed the service MGR. He said switch was probably defective and to bring it back in a month so they could have the right tech look at it. When I took the car in they performed reg. service and said the switch was working properly and Honda didn't want to cover it. Svs Mgr said that since he observed the problem they would out of a courtesy replace it the following week and he would call me. He never did. Since then switch seems to be OK so I don't know if while they were looking at it there was a loose connection or whatever. Car is now out of warranty and if switch goes bad again I'm going to be very upset. This only happened about a month ago. A little insulted that they didn't call me to say they weren't going to replace switch."

Shocks or struts

"I had always heard about the unreliability issues that Honda owners had complained to dealerships about, but Honda Management in Japan choose to not report, which lead to falsely high reliability ratings. In short, Honda management lied, for over 11 years, to the US government and falsely overstated Honda reliability. The government then fined Honda the largest ever fine at the time, (Jan 2015)$35 million dollars, twice. One $35M fine for false reliability reporting, and the second $35M fine f"

Battery (not hybrid or electric)

"At least three separate times the battery discharged and would not start the car. The dealership was unable to determine the cause of the problem."

Casteel L., NY (2016 Honda Accord LX 3.5-L V6)

"First of all, I didn't see battery or alternator until I was 3 or 4 menus down, so not good. Anyway, OEM battery die in less than 2 years, and replacement by AAA also died in less than 2 years. Coincidence? I doubt it even though I was told there was no electrical system problem. I bought a battery tester and trickle charger, you can be sure I'll start getting nervous in another 1.5 years about the warning sign of a battery not charging. Last time it was losing all infotainment."

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Honda Accord EX-L 3.5-L V6)

"On push of the starter button, the car only 'clicked'. The engine never turned over, just like the battery were dead. Called AAA. When the tow truck driver showed up, he asked to try again so that he could hear the problem himself. And of course, it started right up. He ran a battery/starter/alternator check and all passed. Car has started fine every since then."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Honda Accord EX-L 3.5-L V6)

What Owners Say

Emission control devices (includes EGR)

"The engine thermostat failed & in cold (< 40 deg) it would not get/stay in closed loop which significantly reduces gas mileage. It was replaced incorrectly by dealer & is bad again. It works great in summer, but when winter returns again the mileage will drop 20%. Dealer will not return my phone calls"

Stanley N., MI (2016 Honda Accord EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"The coolant thermostat operation significantly degraded not allowing the engine to go into closed-loop. This seriously affects gas mileage AND eliminates emissions compliance. It was replaced once by the dealer, but was installed incorrectly and failed again within 3 months. I made the dealer give me a thermostat & antifreeze and I changed it! It's worked super ever since. Took me less than 1 hour."

Gary H., OR (2016 Honda Accord LX-S 3.5-L V6)
Transmission rebuild or replacement

"The transmission failed and Honda refused to honor the warrantee. I had to go to arbitration to get SOME relief. I believe the transmission is not robust enough for the vehicle. Very disappointing. It will probably prevent me from buying another Honda after many years of owning Hondas It was more the dealerships attitude than the performance of the vehicle"

Michael V., NJ (2016 Honda Accord EX 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"the transmission began to shudder. Honda claimed I exceeded the towing capacity which I did not"
