The Honda CR-V's redesign yielded big improvements. The four-cylinder engine is smooth and spirited yet economical. The interior is roomier, and fit and finish are very good. The CR-V is among the top-scoring small SUVs and represents a good dollar value. Crash tests are also very impressive. Too much road noise is our main gripe.

Climate System

Blower (fan) motor, A/C compressor, condenser, evaporator, heater system, automatic climate control, refrigerant leakage, electrical failure.

What Owners Say

A/C compressor

"The air conditioning was not cooling very well and started to make noise late summer 2016. A fan type thing in the air conditioning system had metal pieces coming off of it and it damage the system and it cost approx. $1000 to repair"

Anonymous, WI (2002 Honda CR-V 2.3-L 4 Cyl)

"Compressor failed during the summer in congested traffic. Found this is a common problem with CRV's in high heat situations"

Anonymous, CA (2002 Honda CR-V 2.3-L 4 Cyl)

"This was the second compressor replacement. The first was done by a private repair shop, the recent one by the dealership. The compressor failed. Info on-line indicates that this is due to the location of the compressor, a problem that Honda has since fixed in newer models"

Jean E., MD (2002 Honda CR-V 2.3-L 4 Cyl)

"We were returning from our road trip to the east coast in July of 2016. The AC quit just outside of Lincoln, NE. We had it checked and repaired before we left on our road trip. The Honda dealership repaired the AC with no charge, it was under warranty for a year and it quit within a month of the repair"
