Transmission Major
Transmission rebuild or replacement, torque converter, clutch replacement.
What Owners Say
"Not in last 12 months. Transmission leaked at 50K mi. Replaced under warranty. New tran. blew up on a trip at 160K mi. Ck engine light came on and tran. blew 5 min later while charging up hill at 70 mph 12 mi. south of Jasper, WY. Reman. tran. put in at Honda dealership along with external Magnafine Filter. I had installed a tran cooler at about 40K mi. After reading on Ody Forum how to get extra miles from a reman., I think it will be OK. Had I known the Honda V6 tran. had a serious design fault in 2001, I would not have bought it. Otherwise, I have loved my Ody."
Robert J., TN (2001 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5-L V6)"At 80,000 miles, local Honda replaced transmission free due to wrong fluid viscosity recommended. At 160,000 miles transmission was replaced by a different shop in another State and I had to pay for the entire deal! Something's not being passed on about the transmission fluid info!"
Anonymous, MS (2001 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5-L V6)"THE TRANSMISSION COMPLETLY FAILED WITH NO NOTICEABLE WARNING"
Tony-Barbara S., FL (2001 Honda Odyssey LX 3.5-L V6)"This is the second transmission for this car. 1st replaced at 115000. This one at 255000. The rest of the car is running like a top. Uses only 1qt oil every 10000. So felt the transmission still worth it even at 260000 miles"
Anonymous, CA (2001 Honda Odyssey LX 3.5-L V6)"Transmission would not shift, replacement transmission installed immediately when problem occurred. It took about ten days."
Anonymous, AZ (2001 Honda Odyssey LX 3.5-L V6)"the shifting became more difficult and then the check engine light came on and the code was for a transmission failure. Has happened 2 times in the past at 60K mile intervals. Honda replaced it the 1st time and I had to pay for the 2nd one, hopefully they replaced the 2nd one with an improved, ruggedized replacement."
Anonymous, CO (2001 Honda Odyssey LX 3.5-L V6)"At 50000, the original transmission went out and was replaced on warranty due to original manufacturers design flaw. I have had to replace it twice since then as well. I suspect there's something strange with the electrical system that messes with the transmission. I have had to constantly replace batteries and jump start the car."
Anonymous, NV (2001 Honda Odyssey Unsure 3.5-L V6)"A few years after I purchased the 2001 Honda Odyssey, the Check-Engine light would come on intermittently. Each time I brought it to the dealer, it went out, and there were not stored previous errors found. Eventually I bought my own OBD II diagnostic instrument and got the P-Code for the error. The manual shows that this was for the Transmission and all its related solenoids. The diagnostic tree pointed to checking the solenoids first (entirely inaccessible since they are on top of the transmission and under the the chassis panel). My ODB II diag instrument allowed me to connect to a PC and print out the error code and message, which I did. In the last three weeks of the extended transmission warranty, I bought it to the dealer with the printout. Good thing, because the Engine-Check light had reset itself. They acknowledge the error code and stated it needed a new transmission, which they replaced without cost. Fast forward to 2020, the Engine-Check light came on again, this time point to a different P-code that is transmission related. I checked the transmission fluid, and it was a bit low and the dealer had done the 30k maintenance on it. (replacing the fluid) I brought it to the dealer, and they did not even check the solenoids, and just stated it needed a new transmission - cost $5k. The warranty replaced transmission did not even last half as long as the original, mileage-wise. I had other items fixed on it. Damaged right front bearing replaced, leaking radiator replaced, but declined replacing the transmission. When I got it back, I noticed the trans fluid was topped off, but the P-code was still there. I reset the Codes, have driven it since and the Engine-Check light, so far, hasn't come on again. So what is the problem with transmission. Online, I can find hundreds of complaints, not only for 2001, but also 2002 (which I thought they cleared up) and all subsequent years except for 2014, which seemed to be a stellar year. There are YouTube videos with trans teardowns that show exactly what goes wrong, i.e. the pressure plates that (en/dis)gage each gear wear out (primary reason), but also the particulates clog up the internal filters and affect shifting. The websites stated that just flushing/refilling the trans fluid five (5) times had restore proper shifting. Looking at the pressure plates, they seem undersized. Also, some recommended getting a transmission oil cooler (not std from factory) to lengthen the service interval. In the past, Honda has built great cars, with nary a problem and, according to CU, a very high reliability record. If I check now, Honda has drop to an average reliability record. Additionally, the Odyssey now uses a 10-spead automatic trans, with an unproven record. While a nice vehicle, it now cost $40k-$50k. At that price, I want an absolutely reliable vehicle. I keep my vehicles for 250k miles, and I have at least 100k to go on this one."
Anonymous, NJ (2001 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5-L V6)"The transmission just failed without notice. It took a week to fix. The vehicle had 245000 miles on it, so this wasn't exactly unexpected."

Anonymous, MN (2001 Honda Odyssey LX 3.5-L V6)"First transmission rebuild was far enough after 100K that we were told it was past the recall. $5000 - for warranty of remanufactured transmiss. 2nd replacement was about 50K miles later. It took a while for us to convince them. 2nd prob. CANN"
Anonymous, OK (2001 Honda Odyssey 3.5-L V6)"Failed. Replaced under warranty. Still the best car I have ever bought"
Anonymous, CO (2001 Honda Odyssey LX 3.5-L V6)"Catatrophic failure of an overheated transmission. Was recognized as a recall problem by Honda and honored for 7 years and 7 months. Our transmission failed after 9 years, and Honda asked us to pay the $5,500 of a transmission rebuilt . Not again!"
Klaus N., MA (2001 Honda Odyssey LX 3.5-L V6)"I was told there was clutch material in the transmission and problems with the torque converter. Had taken my car to the dealer for 14 years, very much trusted. So I decided to sell the car instead of replace transmission"
Jan R., OR (2001 Honda Odyssey 3.5-L V6)"4th transmission"

Anonymous, CA (2001 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5-L V6)"The cost of the rebuild varied from various dealers and repair shops: $2700 - $5700, the Honda dealer being the most expensive. I spoke with the dealer and discovered they have the work done at a local repair shop. The repair shops owner was the form"
Bob H., OR (2001 Honda Odyssey LX 3.5-L V6)"THREE transmissions since we owned it...other than that and the fact that the cheap plastic decorations and knobs are falling off, it's been a good car. OH, and except for the fact that the engine light goes on and off and we can't figure out why"
Anonymous, CA (2001 Honda Odyssey 3.5-L V6)"Trans failed at 150k. After some research i found many other Odyssey's had the same problem. I had a Jasper re-manufactured trans installed. The latter failed a month later. Fortunately still under warranty. But van seems to be falling apart"

Anonymous, GA (2001 Honda Odyssey 3.5-L V6)"Transmission had be be replaced at 110,000 -- some of this is due to my inexperience about autos. I should have done better maintenance. I do repairs as needed, regular oil changes, but missed this preventative care"
Maureen G., NJ (2001 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5-L V6)
"At low speeds and lower gears, changes would sometimes [especially when not warmed up] cause converter to lock in upper gear. A restart would bypass the lock up and normal operation would return. When warmed up, operation was very good. Mechanically not solved."
