What Owners Say

Loose exterior trim or moldings

"Part of the exterior trim has come loose"

Anonymous, MT (2003 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5-L V6)

"Plastic rivets used to hold on exterior trim in place fail, causing plastic front lower bumper cover to make noise over bumps. Replaced previously, but recurred"

Anonymous, NJ (2003 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5-L V6)

"The rubber molding around the sliding door comes off repeatedly. The right door door molding came loose and then jammed to door. could not close the door. removed the molding and drove to dealer to repair $1225.00"

Loose interior trim or moldings

"Trim around both front seats is broken. Driver's door cloth trim is torn due to my leg/knew riding there when I drive the car"

Anonymous, MO (2003 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5-L V6)
Paint (fading, chalking, cracking, or peeling)

"The clear coat on the exterior horizontal surfaces of my Odyssey has failed. There are large dull, white patches on both the hood and the roof of the car. Although the sides and back of the car look good, the rest is unacceptable. In researching on the web, it is clear that Honda has a major problem with this failure that affects all of its vehicles, especially the darker colors."

Anonymous, CA (2003 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5-L V6)

"The whole car body has been cracking and peeling for several years. Especially the hood."

Bonnie S., CA (2003 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5-L V6)

"Paint above sliding doors (and spreading) is peeling off. Honda refuses to do anything about it because it is not the grey color paint that was recalled awhile ago. It is Havasu Blue."

Anonymous, CA (2003 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5-L V6)

"Midnight Blue color had issues after 5 or 6 years with peeling paint. A recall was issued many years ago but I was not aware of it. I see other midnight blue Honda Odyssey vans that appear to have the same issue."

Anonymous, MD (2003 Honda Odyssey LX 3.5-L V6)

"Car sits out in the weather all the time; had paint chipping repaired once about 9 years ago; it needs painting again. But everything else works great."

John S., CA (2003 Honda Odyssey 3.5-L V6)

"has required multiple paint jobs"

Anonymous, (2003 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5-L V6)

"The body and roof panels (sheet metal skin) of the Honda Odyssey are not continuously welded together. Instead, the seams are joined with a flexible sealant, over which the factory paint is applied. Not surprisingly, these seams become the sites for flexure, expansion, and contraction, and hence the factory paint cracks along these seams with normal vehicle operation. this is especially pronounced at the rear of the car, where the roof panel and rear corner pillars are subjected to the stresses caused by the opening and closing of the liftgate. My roof paint on my 2003 Odyssey began to crack by 2015, causing water leaks along the edges of the roof panels, and pooling into the rear cargo basin.."

Anonymous, (2003 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5-L V6)

"Paint flaking off in a few areas. Primed and repainted. Looks new"

Anonymous, IN (2003 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5-L V6)

"Original paint was repaired 2-3 years ago under warranty coverage due to a defect in factory paint for the roof; now this (repainted) surface and several panels of the original paint are again blistering and peeling off down to bare metal"

"Paint coming off all over Van"

Bill-Jane N., OR (2003 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5-L V6)

Sarah Z., VA (2003 Honda Odyssey LX 3.5-L V6)

"About 3 years into ownership, the Navajo Blue paint began to peel away from under the side windows (both sides) and the roof"

Michael B., CA (2003 Honda Odyssey 3.5-L V6)

"Several panels had severe peeling several years ago (about 6 years after purchase) which triggered a recall, and were repainted under warranty. Since then other panels have had less extensive peeling and chipping, not covered under warrantee"

Anonymous, WA (2003 Honda Odyssey LX 3.5-L V6)

"The problem was a failure of a prior warranty-covered repainting, which originally was a recall. The repaint from the recall started to chip and flake, so the dealership accepted that the recall repainting was not done well, and covered this new repainting job as if it were under warranty."

Anonymous, CA (2003 Honda Odyssey 3.5-L V6)

"The paint had been peeling for several years. The color of paint had a recall in Japan but not in the U.S.A.. Attempted to get Honda to cover cost of repainting the van but Honda would not. I paid for a new paint job because the van ran well."

"intermittent failure to go into first gear from a full stop"

Bill H., CA (2003 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5-L V6)

"This vehicle is known for transmission failure. As a consequence I had been scrupulous in changing the transmission fluid more frequently than recommended always using genuine Honda fluid. Eventually at about 134000 miles my luck ran out and I got a total failure. I spent about $3500 for a rebuilt unit and new transmission cooler. Cross your fingers for another 100,000 miles!"

Anonymous, LA (2003 Honda Odyssey LX 3.5-L V6)

"I experienced a problem with the Odyssey when on the freeway. The transmission basically sounded like it was in neutral, though was in drive. I contacted Honda Motor Corp. They said that since the original owner brought this vehicle in for the transmission recall inspection and no problem was noted, and I was not the original owner there would be no warranty coverage. So I had the transmission completely rebuilt out of pocket. Since that time the transmission has been ok."

"transmission failed the other month (about 177,000 miles). I had to have it rebuilt"

Mark P., FL (2003 Honda Odyssey LX 3.5-L V6)

"Transmission failed, was rebuilt improperly and was rebuilt again"

Steve R., CA (2003 Honda Odyssey EX 3.5-L V6)

"The transmission rebuilt 4 years ago. Then it was replaced with a new (rebuilt by Honda). Since the transmission was replaced by a Transmission business, Honda charges $1200.00 extra for some kind of policy. This amount was added to the so called new transmission. They have a 4 year warranty on the transmission they put in. Honda takes old transmissions and rebuilds them some were in the U.S. I asked is this a new transmission and they then told me it was a rebuilt one. They do not put new"

Heater system

"The heater core has been prone to clogging since 2018. This causes reduced flow of radiator fluid through the in-dash heater core. Access to the heater core for replacement requires extensive disassembly of the dashboard, with repair estimates of approximately $2,000. I have had the coolant system flushed repeatedly, with some improvement of heater performance, but conclude that the minute passages through the corrugated heater core serve (unintentionally) as the principal filter for the entire engine coolant system. An easy remedy would be to add a servicable and accessible filter through which engine coolant first flows before it passes through the firewall and into the dashboard."
