Image-conscious parents may avoid them, but there's simply no beating a minivan for overall versatility and practical family transportation. The Honda Odyssey blended a comfortable cabin, flexible seating, and room for eight people with responsive handling and impressive fuel economy. The smooth six-speed automatic transmission boosts fuel economy to a best-in-class 21 mpg overall.

What Owners Say

"Handles vvery nice for a van. Not a "floater". (note that some drivers may prefer a softer ride) At certain speeds the car fails to downshift when passing causing poor acceleration. Does not happen often. Sometimes, with low speed acceleration it will abruptly downshift into first with a noticeable thump."

DANIEL D., NJ (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Pretty Good for such a large/high car, but definitely does not drive like a regular car."

WILLIAM R., GA (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"It is difficult to know where the front and front sides of the car are as they are not visible. So it is very difficult to park and in some circumstances to drive. It just feels way too big"

"Good handling"

Anonymous, NS (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Good handling but lackluster acceleration"

"Handles well for a Van. We've had Minivan's since '84 and this is ine of the best."

RICHARD M., OH (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"At 96,000 kms, when parked on a slight incline (or decline) the van experiences a very hard shift out of park. Not sure if this is an indication of an pending issue."

Anonymous, AB (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"For a big Van it has very good acceleration and handling"

Anonymous, NJ (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"This vehicle drives nicely, whether in traffic or on the highway. Acceleration is responsive and handling is very positive. The features of this van are user friendly - ease of door opening/closing. The navigation system, side view camera, lane departure warnings, and backup camera are excellent safety features. This van is quieter than I expected. On the road recently the van delivered 26.5 mpg while cruising at around 75mph. I consider that very good. Overall, this van exceeds my expec"

Anonymous, FL (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"The car handles very well for such a big car and can accelerate smoothly and quite quickly when need be."

DENIS T., IL (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"The acceleration seems to be less than what I was expecting after reading reviews both online and in CR."

JEFF M., FL (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Tires. Came with Michelin Primacy MXM4 tires. The car is 25 months old now and has less than 21,000 miles. The tires are really worn even though regularly rotated and the van has been aligned once. Unbelievable that the tread is nearly gone on short trip driving. My wife doesn't average 200 miles in a week."

DOUGLAS A., VA (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"especially like side camera for changing lanes"

Anonymous, OH (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Handles like a regular passenger car. Fun to drive"

Anonymous, NJ (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"The power steering is not as helpful as my previous American made vehicle. It seems stiff and requires too much effort at the beginning of a turn. The vehicle does not help return to straight ahead from a slight turn, but must be forced to so with too much effort, in my opinion. Also, a major error in the design of these vehicles is the lack of ability to start the car with a key in the event of loss of the remote. If you are on vacation in the mountains 500 miles from home and you lose your"

Anonymous, FL (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Acceleration seems sluggish - even for a minivan."

BRAD T., SC (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Transmission has a problem selecting proper gear when decelerating and then quickly accelerating ie: slowing down for a red light and then it turns green and when you accelerate there i a large surge and the gear is improperly selected making a banging type noise and you feel like you were rear-ended."

DENNIS M., PA (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Does not accelerate as good as the last model I had (2006) the newer 6 speed transmission does not downshift very fast and seems to lag. The older 5 speed transmission had much better acceleration."

MARK R., TX (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Corners well (very little body roll)"

Anonymous, CA (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Excellent handling like a car."

MARIO M., FL (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"The 6/3 cylinder arrangement gives it good acceleration when I need it and good economy. I regularly pull a small trailer with this car."

TERRY B., AL (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Cruise control does not hold speed very well (drops about 3 mph before accelerating enough). Also, sometimes the transmission has a load clunk when accelerating after slowing down to 5-10 mph (but not zero)."

Anonymous, PA (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"The transmission slams into gear after 30mins of stop and go traffic."

Anonymous, VA (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Continental tires that came as equipped on this EXL are EXTREMELY noisy at 70 MPH. You have to turn the radio up to 16 so you can hear it."

BUTCH K., NC (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Handing acceleration comfort are superb. A pleasure to drive"

JEFF S., FL (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"No problem"

BOB B., NC (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"acceleration is very good- maneuvers well well and is very comfortable on long distance drives"

JOE-VANESSA B., MN (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"The front axle was bent on our new car and the dealer did not discover that until 30,000 miles of my complaints. The car handles like a bus."

H C., CA (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"The vehicle doesn't coast, when going downhill, for instance. It "throttles down," automatically slowing the vehicle. It took some getting used to."

HOLLY B., ID (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Cruise control is minimal, it won't keep up with traffic even on small rolling hills on the interstate. I would like for someone to call me from Honda 317 727 2350 about this poor feature"

RON A., IN (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Style and comfort. solid performance"

WILLIAM W., MO (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"On-going problem with vehicle pulling to left that dealer has not been able to correct. At first complaint with less than 2,500 miles, dealer suggested I purchase "better quality" tires than what came with vehicle. Transmission has jerky shifting, especially at slower stop/slow and go speeds."

E D., IL (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"the transmission is not very smooth when shifting gears"

Anonymous, SC (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Handling is best feeling for any 7 passenger vehicle I test drove. Miles better feel than the Sienna, more nimble than the Pilot and Highlander as well due to the lower CG. Suspension is reasonably firm, but ride is not uncomfortable due to the very comfortable seats. Acceleration is acceptable. Not looking for a dragster minivan. Excellent visibility around the vehicle."

SAMUEL H., WI (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Odyssey is very maneuverable with tight turning radius, easy to parallel park, good acceleration (at the cost of gas mileage), and excellent stopping--avoided two deer so far."

Anonymous, MD (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Impressive acceleration when needed such as entering an expressway."

PAUL M., PA (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"The 6 cylinder engine provides good acceleration. The turn radius enables tight U-turns when required."

Troy C., OH (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Poor cruise control on the highway. Small hills on the interstate ...the speed drops off 2,3 miles an hour....some cars don't do that"

Anonymous, IN (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Had a Prius with gear less transmission. Hated it! Sounded horrible and always felt like it was struggling. The low end turbo mated with the gearl said transmission is genius. The two work well together and are very satisfying to drive."

Christophe A., OH (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Generally rides good but could have less noose"

Anonymous, MO (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"This vehicle was designed to drive more like a sports sedan than a large minivan. Engine needs a timing chain not a breakable and noisy rubber belt. Acceleration is ok for a large, heavy family mover. The gas mileage though is outstanding."

S S., NY (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Has the room of a mini-van and the handling of a sedan. Acceleration is adequate and the ride is quite smooth with the all season tires."

J J., MD (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"My wife does not like how the Odyssey drops 2 cylinders for ECO mode, which is automatic in our model and cannot be disabled. She feels the shifting is clunky and does not like it. Rotors went bad at 13k miles under normal driving conditions and had to be replaced."

Joe P., AR (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Excellent handling and acceleration for this class of vehicle."

Marcel M., BC (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Able to confidently accelerate to merge onto traffic."

Paul M., PA (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Awful. Transmission started slipping at 23,000 miles. Had flush done, no change. Now at a little over 30,000, exceleration at 30 - 40 miles per hour and again at 60 miles per hour is enough of hesitation to feel unsafe on the road"

Anonymous, IL (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Car handles well. I have found that Honda’s generally handle well. I accelerates well and generally, the driving experience is remarkable for such a large car."

Denis T., IL (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"easy push on acceleration and easy to steer"

Anonymous, AR (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"The Odyssey drives very smooth and has great suspension. The acceleration is there when you need it for merging on to highways and changing lanes. I am also really surprised with how easy it is to maneuver considering how large of a vehicle it is. The backup cameras make pulling into tight spots a breeze. This was important for me because I live in the city where I have to parallel park daily. I also really appreciate the proximity sensors in the front of the car as well for the same reason."

Nathan R., MI (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Heavy vehicle. Doesn't corner very well. Size of the engine limits acceleration."

Michael K., RI (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Best thing about the car is the driving experience (except the seat, which is painful). It is fast, handles beautifully, accelerates wonderfully, has an amazing turning circle."

Anonymous, MD (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Surprisingly responsive."

Anonymous, NJ (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"The good. View of the road from driver’s position is great. Acceleration is great. Cruise control is handy and accurate (but, see “bad‿ below). Side mirrors are nice and large. Seats are comfortable. Braking is responsive. Turning radius is impressive. The bad. The buttons for cruise control are not user friendly. The up/down toggle is too small causing distraction while driving. Head rests in rear seats tend to rise too high, blocking some of the view via rear view mirror."

Anonymous, FL (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Car is a pleasure to drive. Plenty of power and smooth accerleration. Handles and brakes well."

Stephen M., PA (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Very reliable, responsive with excellent stability and road feel for a large vehicle!"

Werner R., TX (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"My Odyssey has excellent pick-up and acceleration, which is great given that many of the highways where I live are interstate speeds."

L V., NY (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"For a large vehicle the Odyssey has good acceleration and handles nimbly for a variety of driving conditions. The brakes stop the vehicle reasonably quickly; its suspension quickly absorbs rough road conditions. The seats provide excellent support and comfort. My one handling concern is its low road clearance: It is easy to bottom out on rough, uneven and back roads."

Anonymous, WA (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"For a larger van, it handles comfortably and with the side mirror camera, makes moving to the right extremely easy and safe."

Robert P., FL (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"The car does not track well. Keeping the car in the lane takes more concentration than many cars. It is improves when I run the tires about 1 to 2 psi below the pressure on the door jam. But it is still not great."

P M., MA (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"I believe that the handling is excellent on the vehicle. Considering that there are normally six individuals in the vehicle, the Odyssey has great handling & maneuvering. The only drawback is that the acceleration could use improvement. I also drive an Odyssey at my place of employment and the 2015 model has much faster acceleration compared to my 2014 model."

Goyo L., TX (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"The six speed auto works well with the 3.5 L V-6 to offer reasonable acceleration and good fuel efficiency. This car handles very much like a sedan and not a truck."

J J., MD (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"it just does a very good job"

James E., VA (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"It just handles very well. It seems to handle as well as a car."

Glenn G., IL (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"good acceleration for highways"

George G., NC (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Poor quality. Had 3 of 4 TPMS sensors go bad within a year. Not covered under warranty. Sloppy ride. Constantly gets stuck in snow, rain, mud, somebody sneezes. Sliding doors sometimes stay open, sometimes not. Dealer unable to find issues. Lots of recalls."

S S., NY (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"practically drives like a car"

Anonymous, AZ (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Power is fantastic, handles reliably and with control. Even with a cargo box on top it gets good mileage, handles well and is very quick, especially for a mini-van. It happily handles long trips, you don't get tired driving a car that goes where you point it."

John G., CA (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"The transmission is erratic. Sometimes it functions smoothly and the performance is lively. At other times it shifts roughly, upshifts too early and downshifts are slow when trying to accelerate. On the other hand it will downshift too early when coasting, as on suburban roads at, say, 40mph. I keep taking it to the dealer, but they never see the problem when testing. I am going to a different dealer next week."

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"VERY SATISFIED WTH EVERYTHING EXCEPT ROAD TIRE NOISE, ESPECIALLY ON CERTAIN ROAD SURFACES. IT IS A SHAME TO HAVE SUCH A GREAT AUDIO SYSTEM AND YOU CANT USE IT WITHOUT EAR PHONES DURING HIGHWAY DRIVING."

ALAN S., AZ (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Ride seems a little choppy, not as smooth as the windstar it replaced. It seems noisier than it needs to be. Recently rented an Escape that was quieter."

Anonymous, OH (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"There continues to still be an issue with wind noise in the windshield. This also existed in the previous two models that we have had."

JUSTIN S., IN (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Back seats ride is unstable. Any turn or change in direction or stopping "throws" the passenger. Must actively be aware or changes in direction and stopping. Excessive road noise."

Anonymous, TX (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Seats not comfortable, too narrow and thin. The arm-rest is narrow and skimpy."

"Very comfortable from and second row seats; noise still an issue; climate control very good."

E S., NY (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"I'm sure our Honda will run forever. However my issue is the same a most Japanese manufacturers, road noise at highway speeds is too much. They need to put a little effort into cabin isolation."

J D., MI (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Best seats ever. Very comfortable on long trips."

Anonymous, VA (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"I hate the inside of this car. 2 car seats in the back and no more room for anything but a cat. Noise in the front is terrible from window wind. Radio 3rd grade quality. Sounds like someone singing with their hand over their mouth. Basically a 4 passenger car if you are on a trip. Last seat is for luggage."

MARY A., OH (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Great van"

GARY J., TX (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"You can't drive it over ~30mph with a window down. It's hard to describe, but you get rapid (~4/sec) pressure waves of air/sound pummeling your head. I wonder if there's some kind of active noise cancellation system that can't handle the windows being down?"

GERALD T., NY (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Excessive road noise. concrete road surface is the worst. Foot and leg room in the vehicle is terrible, I frequently find I am covering both the brake and gas pedal at the same time. Radio and sound saystem controls are confusing at best."

JOHN B., NY (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"The seats are extremely comfortable for all passengers. My previous Odyssey was 13 years old when I sold it and this new one is much more comfortable. Even adult rear seat passengers comment on how comfortable the seats are - even the third row seats!"

"Front seats are not sufficiently adjustable. They sit on a pedestal that feels too high. The seats are also very hard. Not terrible, but not very comfortable either."

JOHN C., NY (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Compared with my 2005 Odyssey Touring model, the 2014 Odyssey EX-L has more road noise and handling is a little sloppy."

Anonymous, TX (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Odysseys have always been very noisy. Why can't they add additional noise insulation to reduce the road noise coming into the interior. Also some wind noise from the windshield areas. You have commented on this problem for many years. Honda just does not get the message. What a shame."

"The ride is very rough..........as my granddaughter puts it, way too, bumpy..........I expected more from this vehicle.........."

Anonymous, TX (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"Front seats can't be adjusted to my liking. The front of the seats will not lower, thus placing undue pressure on the back of the knees and legs. Additionally, there is about 10-12 inches of door sill. While the van is low the long reach over the sill at entry and exit negate the low styling. The back of my wife's legs hit the sill before the feet make contact with the ground. That causes discomfort. There is a rattle at the back lift gate where the center seat belt attaches. There is wind noist."

The leather seats are really comfortable and the AC is great offering some control in the back. The window-shades, rear windows that open, and ease with which the 3rd row seats can be collapsed into the floor all indicate that a lot of thought and engineering went into making the interior as comfortable _and_ usable as possible. "Van feels like a creaky box that was thrown together on a Friday before closing. Has been creaking lots since less than 5,000km. Crabs worse than our first 2003 Odyssey does now (with almost 300,000km on it!) plastics were poor-fitting at delivery and dealership stone-walled the complaint."

The lower deck height makes it easier to get in and out of than some minivans for even older individuals who have trouble pulling themselves up. George G., NC (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"The ride of our 2014 Honda Odyssey is just what I like, neither to soft nor too hard. The van rides and like a car, engine is peppy. Transmission shifts okay, but sometimes does not go to the right gear, so Honda's engineers need to work on that. This van is very roomy, practical, all row seats are comfortable. The newer model has better front seats than mine, but the second and third row seats are very good. With the recall on the sits, now sits are more difficult to adjust after the recall, but other than that the van is very, very practical. Engine produces really good sound and when you drive the van spirited, you really enjoy it. I have few gripes. Transmission sometimes shifts in the wrong gear, when I am slowing the van and making a turn, it puts me on a higher gear. It does not happen often, but sometimes the computer does that. The van's infotainment system is the weakest point, but we hardly use it. I believe that this is the worst infotainment system in the business, period. If you put the right set of tires, the road noise is minimal, but it is not as good as some other cars in the business. The only mechanical issue we had was with the brake rotors - the front one warped after 53,000 miles of driving. This is a very decent minivan - we just love it and hope our kids will not make us sell it when they start going to high school."

Second row center arm rests were gone,,third row overhead handles gone, second row overhead handles moved towards rear so honda could eliminate the third row handles. The bad: Access to rear seats, closeness of front seat to steering wheel, interior dash, door panels mark easily and don’t clean up so easily. Space between driver’s seat and center consol too narrow to get hand there to retrieve dropped objects."

We bought the Odyssey for increased reliability AND because the car was the first minivan to meet the (then) highest standards of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. "Great car that has been totally problem free. Love to drive it!"

Werner R., TX (2014 Honda Odyssey)

"We bought the minivan for 33,500 OTD (out-the-door) brand new. We have 74,000 miles and the only mechanical issue was related to the brake rotors - the front ones warped when we drove the car from Olympia, Washington, to St. Petersburg, Florida. Last year alone, we had one round trip - Washington - Florida, and Olympia, WA, to Indian Wells,, and back. We can drive easily seven to eight hours and be fine. When we had our Toyota Prius, we could not drive the car more than 2.5 hours and had to stop for the day. On a highway, this van is very economical. We achieve 30+ mpg/hour. Because we idle a lot, the average mileage is about 20 mpg/hour, though. We also have a small trailer that we haul one ATV and one Dirt-Bike. This van pulls it like a champ. Granted, the trailer weight is about 400 lb, and the ATV and dirt bake are about 600 lb, so we are pulling 1,000 lb with it. The van loaded however, 2 adults, 3 kids, and lots of other gears. One gripe I have is that I fill and drain the transmission fluid (about 3.8 quarters) every 15,000 miles. Other than that, no issues. The best van for the money."
