This version of the Elantra rides comfortably and quietly. Additionally, its cabin is relatively spacious. The engine feels refined and provides adequate acceleration. Handling is secure, but not particularly agile. The Elantra has come a long way. In contrast to the previous version we tested, this model was a very good car with a lot to offer.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

What Owners Say

“Slow and squeals around corners. Basic car”

JAMES C., ON (2004 Hyundai Elantra)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

NA

What Owners Say

“The interior noise level is quite high. The driver's seat is not comfortable, it is too soft for long distance driving. I previously owned a 1999 Elantra and the seat was harder but more comfortable.”

ALEXANDRA B., NJ (2004 Hyundai Elantra)

“Shoulder belt of seat belts presses uncomfortably on my neck. Seats are o.k., but lack padding for comfort on long trips (I get a sore butt and pressure on siatic nerve, down leg). As I get older, it is harder to get out of the low seats.”

GAIL R., PA (2004 Hyundai Elantra)

“Seats are comfortable and worked great till we had kids now we have to push front seat so far forward it is uncomfortable for front seat passengers to fit in with the car seat in the back.”

Anonymous, ID (2004 Hyundai Elantra)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

NA

What Owners Say

“The other drivers insurance company replaced my totaled auto with this one (different model). I couldn't be happier.”

Anonymous, FL (2004 Hyundai Elantra)

“The Elantra was a tremendous value. You got a lot of things included that more expensive similar models (Corolla/Civic/Sentra) did not. The fit and feel was great. Good acceleration and mileage. Plenty of room. Good trunk size. Car is getting old and I do not know if a new Elantra is as good a value as it was then.”

BARRY J., NY (2004 Hyundai Elantra)

“Great value on this car. It just keeps going and going!”

Anonymous, ID (2004 Hyundai Elantra)

“Economical but very basic”

Anonymous, CA (2004 Hyundai Elantra)

“I paid 10k. for the car with 7k. miles on it. Was like new.”

Anonymous, CA (2004 Hyundai Elantra)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

NA

What Owners Say

“like the hatchback styling and GTS package. trim quality is a little below par. Will need to replace in next year instead of servicing AC”

EDWARD P., AL (2004 Hyundai Elantra)

Percentage of owners who would definitely purchase that same vehicle again. Owner-satisfaction Ratings are determined by the percentage of those who answered "definitely yes" to the question asked by the Consumer Reports Annual Auto Survey "Considering all factors (price, performance, reliability, comfort, enjoyment, etc.), would you get this car if you had to do it all over again?". If we don’t have sufficient data, a similar model might be used to form the owner-satisfaction score.
