This version of the Elantra was a well-rounded competitor with rankings near the top of our small-sedan Ratings. An easy car with which to live, the Hyundai combines nimble handling with comfort and a well-controlled ride. The car also offers a neatly laid out and well-equipped interior. However, the coupe-like stylling dictates a beltline that swoops upward toward the rear. This can impede the view to the rear quarters.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

JONATHAN D., QC (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Handles well but rides harshly. Good acceleration for the mpg.”

WILLIAM F., PA (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“like it very much, only problem is the road noise.”

JIM B., WA (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“The Elantra is a very rough ride.”

Anonymous, PA (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Has a very stiff ride.”

Anonymous, LA (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“It accelerates a bit better than my Prius, which isn't saying much, but I'll take what I can get.”

Anonymous, NY (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“easy to drive, suspension could be softer”

HERBERT M., NJ (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“handles great and precise , great gas mileage”

WILLIAM W., OH (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“a. steering is "sticky" to slight adjustments when driving at highway speeds, requiring extra attention and a less smooth (more jerky) ride than other vehicles ive owned. b. excessive heat enters the vehicle near front floor ventilation areas, causing additional/excessive heat in vehicle when running.”

Anonymous, VA (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Under powered, especially with air conditioning on.”

THOMAS D., CT (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Terrible on snow and ice”

Anonymous, IN (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“This is not by nature a snappy car, whether in econo mode or not, but when you push it, it will respond. The steering and ride are smooth without being mushy.”

R R., MN (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Really lacks acceleration and the road noise is terrible!”

Anonymous, FL (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“I put the engine in ECO mode, so not so fast accelerations, but I hope the engine will last longer because too much gasoline injected can wash the oil in the cylinders and reduce the life of the engine.”

Anonymous, ON (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“It handles very poorly in icy conditions.”

ANTHONY U., OH (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Handling ok, but tires were rotated and ever since then the ride has been bumpy.”

Anonymous, NY (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“The car handles well. The acceleration is lacking. The gas mileage really is poor for this size vehicle.”

LYNN E., AZ (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“good mileage no complaints”

MURRAY S., ON (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“I think the acceleration is what I expected, but will look for a car that has quicker acceleration in the future.”

Anonymous, FL (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“This car is used mainly for in-town driving. I don't use it on long trips because it does not have the "poop" going up mountain roads. We use the Santa Fe instead.”

D B., BC (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

“I've taken a few trips in my car and find I am thrilled with how my car seats are comfortable. The a/c keeps me very comfortable and it gives me a great ride. The trips I've taken are 5+ hours and I have no complaints.”

KATHLEEN Z., GA (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“It's comfortable, but a little noisy, and not as smooth a ride as our other car.”

MARTY H., NC (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Seats: Are great. Climate control: can't control the air flow from vents very good. Noise: To much road noise. Ride: Rough ride, doesn't take bumps, pot holes well at all.”

LYNN E., AZ (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“For me it would be a perfect car if it wasn't so noisy. On some roads it's so loud that conversation is not possible. After 117,000 miles We just couldn't take it any more. Our Camry is much better.”

BOB B., CA (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Air conditioning doesn't work. Loud outside noise when driving.”

Anonymous, CA (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“The shock absorbers aren't that great. I;m aware of every bump in the road. It does get noisy, too. I've gotten used to the seats, knowing how to adjust helps. Wish the steering wheel were angled differently.”

Anonymous, NY (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“too noisy”

Anonymous, FL (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Poor visibility”

ROGER G., OH (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“The cleverness of the Elantra's interior design was a surprising improvement over my 2006 Prius. Very roomy for its apparent size. (Elantra was bought in a pinch after I destroyed the Prius in January 2013.)”

Anonymous, NY (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Loud and light. Feels like a tin can.”

Anonymous, PA (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“In 4th year, floor carpet sheds, leaving floor fibers everywhere. I consider this to be a health and safety matter for those with asthma. Was happy until this development. Seats are also too low and make it more difficult for older people to get out of the car.”

Anonymous, CA (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Too much road noise. Don't like the ride from the performance tires.”

Anonymous, AZ (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Noisy on the highway, and already needs new shocks.”

JAY W., SC (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“noisy, cramped”

SANDRA V., MI (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Driver's seat too Hard. Road noise too loud.”

DENNIS A., FL (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“I'm used to being tall but, at 85, I've shrunk. I bought the car without thinking about seat adjustment. Turned out not to have the capacity to raise the driver's seat. I got a cushion for this and will pay more attention next purchase.”

Anonymous, MA (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“The seats are hard; vents for climate control blow right on me; the car is noisy.”

Anonymous, CO (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Front passenger to low”

FRANK F., NB (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Seats are not comfortable over a long distance. Road noise is also pretty pronounced in the city. The controls are easy to use and pairing the blue tooth is a snap”

JONATHAN D., QC (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“The seats in this car are a bit too stiff, could use more springs or padding for long trips”

BLAKE L., VA (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Springs could be better--you feel the bumps. However I really like the comfort of the seat's shape.”

D B., BC (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“road noise very loud”

Anonymous, CO (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Clunky and cheap”

Anonymous, MN (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Many cars have seats with sides that come up around you. They can be uncomfortable. We would rather have flat seats. Material is very hard to clean.Asked dealer how to clean and they didn't seem to know.”

D M., NY (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Road noise high,ride just ok.”

WILLIAM M., CO (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Car is black inside and out, leather. No window tinting when purchased used. Had windows tinted . Still almost intolerable upon initial entry in summer”

Anonymous, PA (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“It's a bit noisy.”

Anonymous, NJ (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Road and wind noise excessive. Noisy valves when starting. Dealer unconcernd.”

DAN M., ON (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Seats are not comfortable for long trips OR over rough roads.”

Anonymous, MI (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“On highway driving the car is very comfortable with excellent gas mileage (35). The only issue is that the car tends to "drift" towards the left to the point that I can change lanes without trying. All the controls are very user friendly.”

Anonymous, IL (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Comfortable seats , good power from 4 cyclender.”

P P., LA (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Climate control is excellent. Ride is only satisfactory. Really feel bumps in the road. No repair issues at all. Dealer "adds on" extras during servicing unless you are top of game. Gas mileage is disappointing; was expecting over 30 mpg. With a combo of city and highway driving, only average 28 mpg. This is main reason I would not buy again. Better repair record than CR ratings indicate in our case.”

D G., MN (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“the heated leather seats”

WOODSON N., GA (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“It has heated seats in both the front and back. It has ample headroom and leg room for a tall driver (6' 3", 35" leg inseam) while still allowing someone to sit behind the driver.”

WILLIAM S., IL (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“A/C vents in worst possible position”

Anonymous, MD (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“There are a number of blind spots, including not being able to see the front or back end of the car. Newer models now have cameras, which would have been helpful. Also, noise is sometimes annoying. But it is roomy and comfortable for a small call.”

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

“THis vehicle holds it value and has great MPG for the price.”

Anonymous, WI (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“We paid $17900. Came home and checked our Consumer Reports car issue and determined that this was a good deal.”

Anonymous, OH (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“70k miles and the car feels/looks like a much older car. I am sorry we spent the extra $$ to get a Limited model.”

WILLIAM F., PA (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“I feel it was an outstanding value for the price. I have had a family member and two friends purchase Hyundai autos based on their impression and experience with my vehicle. While I have not had to use it, the warranty seems exceptional.”

WILLIAM S., IL (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Good car for price”

FRANK F., NB (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“The main factor about this car, is when you are braking and going of a bumping road at the same time, the brake system appears like it going to crash and break apart.”

Anonymous, NY (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“They lied about MPG. They only just now recalled vehicle for problem I complained about in the first 30 days of ownership.”

Anonymous, TX (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“All things considered, I pretty much got what I paid for with the car. The black interior is a bummer, tho. That's the only interior color available with the silver exterior. The warranty is excellent. I know I've had less expense than owners of other makes of car. I do think the gas mileage estimates are rather inflated. Also the windshield wiper blades are cheap - I have to pay extra to get blades that do a good job of clearing the windshield and LAST. All of the glass, windshield, etc.”

Anonymous, NY (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“many features, everything works, good performer (despite basic transmission missing gears).”

DONALD F., MD (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Road noise too loud but overall I got my moneys wotrth.”

Anonymous, FL (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“For about $19,000 and all the "bells" and "whistles" that were standard on the car, it was a very good deal.”

Anonymous, IL (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Initial price paid. MPG was grossly overstated. Engine problem(s)”

Anonymous, KY (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“I bought the car partially due to their claims of 40 mpg. Later found this wasn't true and my mileage is significantly less than advertised.”

MICHAEL F., NH (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Overall mileage was misrepresented by the manufacturer”

J G., KY (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“My operational costs have been very minimal. With 94,000 miles I still get very good mileage, solid handling, decent acceleration, and a comfortable ride. The controls are all user friendly and it's been a great value for me.”

PHILLIP T., FL (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“great value”

WOODSON N., GA (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“I have owned this vehicle for over a year now and it has been completely reliable (knock on wood) .... I cannot begin to tell you how comforting it is to drive a car without worries!”

BARBARA C., DE (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Mileage is way below expected”

Anonymous, FL (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Exceptional value for the money! Even the base model included features that normally cost extra in other makes - little features that add up to a very pleasant car to own. Examples include elevator seat height, tilt steering, remote mirrors, electronic locking, and in-car USB/Audio jack.”

R R., MN (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Hyundai advertised a mpg that was determined to be fraud but instead of settling the lawsuit, they keep appealing the decision. The result is that the ill feelings toward Hyundai continue and I will not buy another at any price.”

Anonymous, TX (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“We purchased a relatively inexpensive model. I think they cut corners and did not include a high security lock system, which they have on most cars. We also bought an after-market spare tire "donut" as all that was included in the car was an inflation kit which can't repair all tire damage.”

ROBERT T., PA (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Cheap company, no spare tire, Cannot purchase a service manual for the car. Lied to EPA about MPG. Then did mot fulfill agreement to compensate owners. Computer always overstates MPG by 3-4 MPG. All in all, an untrustworthy company.”

Anonymous, MN (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Vehicles in the same class or group with the same options were at least $5,0000 more than my Elantra. The Elantra was a very good value.”

Anonymous, MA (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“I was first attracted by its looks, then found out it cost less than others in its class, and have been very impressed by the good workmanship and appearance of the interior. All together, great value for the money.”

Anonymous, VA (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Car has provided good service, but am not confident that it will continue to do so going forward, am returning it at end of lease, would not want to buy it.”

PETR V., ON (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“I bought this car based on the promise of 29mpg in city and 39 on freeway. They lied. Lucky to get 24 in city. It will get 39 + on long trips. They give about 1 tank of gas a year for misleading adds about the mileage. That doesn't help much. I wanted a car that was more green for the environment. It's no greener than most other new cars. Very disappointing for me. Also the seats' fabric is so cheap that water even leaves ugly dark stains.”

Anonymous, WA (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Good styling. Disappointed milage.”

K N., CA (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“I feel that I overpaid for this car. It lacked features for the cost.”

Anonymous, NB (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Good value for price so far with 36,000 miles. We will see in the long run.”

Anonymous, WA (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Hyundai falsified gas mileage. They have a compensation program that is insulting. I would never buy another car from them again.”

MYRNA B., CA (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Too much road noise and cannot get better MPG than 30 on freeways and 24 in city.”

KENNETH J., CA (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

“seat are hard to keep clean. Leather would have been better”

HERBERT M., NJ (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“up to date”

K N., CA (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Great lines set it apart from other brands”

P P., LA (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“I like the style of the car on outside. Very pretty lines. I like the interior style too except the seats stain way too easily.”

Anonymous, WA (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“A stylish car that is not 'plain jane' in appearance and it doesn't look like so many other cars on the road.”

JOHN K., AZ (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Looked nice at time of purchase”

JAMES R., OR (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Good styling that has bold look.”

Anonymous, WA (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“Big blind spot created by sides of front windshield decreases safety. Sometimes cannot see pedestrians at street corners die to this. This alone would prevent me from purchasing this vehicle again”

Anonymous, ON (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“My car is always noticed. The styling of the 2012 should have remained the same. It is a beautiful car.”

Anonymous, WI (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“The body and paint quality is so poor. It scratches and dents incredibly easily and with the cheap plastic parts things just break. Incredibly disappointed.”

NATALIE D., TX (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“The distance between seat and consol is either too wide or too narrow. Took almost 60 minutes to retrievecar keys dropped between seat and consul. Blind spots so bad it os dangerous. A lot of quality car for the price.”

J P., ON (2012 Hyundai Elantra)

“It still has that new look, especially since I added the exterior butler coding.neasybto keep clean.”

JAMES C., NV (2012 Hyundai Elantra)
