This version of the Elantra was a well-rounded competitor with rankings near the top of our small-sedan Ratings. An easy car with which to live, the Hyundai combines nimble handling with comfort and a well-controlled ride. The car also offers a neatly laid out and well-equipped interior. However, the coupe-like stylling dictates a beltline that swoops upward toward the rear. This can impede the view to the rear quarters.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

“Excellent gearshift and the controlled handling in sudden evasive manoeuvers has proved itself on a couple of occasions when other drivers decided that STOP signs were for other people. The speed-sensitive power steering is nicely weighted on the highway and quite light in parking lots. Hyundai Canada, though, has resolutely declined to accept responsibility for the sticking brake calipers and warped rotors that have plagued the car since delivery. In the U.S. Hyundai simply replaced the brak”

DAVID R., ON (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Not very powerful when starting to accelerate”

Anonymous, ON (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“My Elantra lacks power and acceleration when I need to speed up quickly to pass or increase speed.”

MICHAEL V., PA (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“I bit more horsepower would have been nice but is adequate. But acceleration was better than Civic the other car I considered.”

DANNY J., CA (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“No road feel. Acceleration is fine.”

Anonymous, SC (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Handles good. Driving at 55 MPH in the hills of AR, I got 42-43 MPG!!!”

CHARLES B., TX (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“My car had the live rear axle. Hops around I bumpy roads, particularly turns.”

Anonymous, NH (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“I realize it is a smaller car with a smaller engine, but it seems sluggish once there is more than 2 persons riding. Otherwise it drives and handles well for my driving style.”

Anonymous, UT (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Does not handle well. You lose control over small bumps.”

CHRIS P., MN (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“The configuration of the post & side view mirrors effectively create 'blind spots' when entering circles or sharp curves. For a full view of the road, it is necessary to lean forward in the seat. This is a potentially hazardous action. However, not doing so may allow a pedestrian or other obstacle to remain unseen until the last minute.”

Anonymous, VA (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“The Elantra in my opinion does not handle very well. When I first bought it I thought I'd just have to get used to it as I was used to driving a van. I never did. Driving over the slightest bump can cause a wreck. The slightest adjustment in steering can be an over adjustment. Its scary on the interstate.”

Anonymous, IN (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Tends to cutout if you need to accelerate to quickly.”

JOHN F., CA (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“The car is hard to accelerate smoothly as the fuel delivery seems imprecise and jerky. The car seems to surge.”

ROBERT J., MI (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“I generally drive the speed limit and/or 5 miles over. This has great acceleration to get me on and off the highway, as well as the speed necessary to pass. It gives me 3 different driving modes. 90% of the time I keep it on 'sporty' and find the handling spontaneous. I really enjoy driving it.”

TERRY H., OH (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Not enough power on the freeway or hills Poor visibility when changing lanes. Blind spot on rear posts.”

Anonymous, CA (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“This is the GT version of the Elantra. I am disappointed in its gas mileage and its handling, specifically handling on icy or wet pavement. It is also a noisy car. Rear compartment is small and awkward compared to the sedan version of the Elantra. I would not buy an Elantra GT again, but would definitely buy another Elantra sedan.”

“he convenience of the Hatch back for carrying groceries”

BUTLER M., NJ (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Rough riding car and hard to handle on rough roads”

Anonymous, MD (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Vehicle rides low so got stuck in snow left at intersections from snowplows. Also could not drive up a snow and ice covered driveway (slight hill) at work. Had to leave it parked at bottom of driveway. But that may be a tire issue. But still frustrating with a newer vehicle.”

KARI W., WI (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Underpowered. Needs a few more horsepower.”

Anonymous, SC (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“OK acceleration, just wish it had a little more horsepower”

DAVID B., IA (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Car seems light and the ride is stiff and uncomfortable, especially over rough roads. Car feels small for a six-foot male. Car came with 17" rims and this probably makes the ride feel even harsher.”

Anonymous, HI (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“The visibility is comprised by the styling.”

Anonymous, FL (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Lousy acceleration. Gets about 10 miles per gallon less than what the manufacturer claims.”

JOHN J., NJ (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“The turning radius is small. I can make a U-turn on most city streets without backing up.”

DAVID L., WI (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Handles very well”

Anonymous, DE (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“There were 2 accidents, both caused by the stability control system. The car went off the road once causing serious damage to the vehicle. There was an acceleration problem when parking where several vehicles were hit by the Hyundai. We now drive it with the Stability system turned off. No incidents in 9 months. You should check the NHTSA website this is a very common problem. Since the Government requires stability control, they are not acting on all of the failures. This is infinitely worse t”

Anonymous, NY (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Engine a little weak on the hills. I drive in Econo mode which gears up early. In the hills I have to shift down to get power. This is what I would expect in a low horse powered engine.”

Anonymous, CA (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“The car runs loud, takes rough roads poorly, and underpowered.”

GARY M., VA (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Reversing is difficult because one cannot see where the car ends”

CHRISTOPHER R., ON (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“handling not good for a car this size. Under powered”

JOHN G., VA (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“During summer months, the Elantra is fine. MPG is highly dependent on speed -- over 43 mpg at 50-55, but 35 mpg at 68-72. HOWEVER, in Michigan winter when highways are wet / snowy / icy, the Elantra is hazardous; I feel virtually no control of the car vs my other vehicle. I feel unsafw over 35 mph on the freeway when others pass me doing 60. NOT ACCEPTABLE.”

AL B., MI (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“The car frightens me in bad weather. The rear end skips when it hits bumps because it is so light. It has no grab on the road.”

MERWIN B., MN (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Handling is very good. Acceleration for entering a highway is not great.”

Anonymous, NC (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Rides rough”

Anonymous, NJ (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Acceleration is just okay. Neither peppy nor slow. Sometimes it feels like its hesitant to down shift when passing power is needed. Steering is very numb but ultimately secure. It just has a very disconnected feel to it.”

Anonymous, WI (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Very roomy for a "compact" with good sized trunk. Love the "Fluidic Design" exterior and interior. Quite peppy for a four with six speed auto. It shifts up very quickly. City driving I am getting 29 plus mpg Over all, I am very pleased with this Hyundai Elantra GLS”

DOUG V., WI (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Poor acceleration”

Anonymous, MI (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“The Elantra is adequate when it comes to these features.”

THOMAS V., MI (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“acceleration is excellent”

Anonymous, NH (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“I have skidded off the road a few times. quite scary.”

Anonymous, TX (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“My last car was a standard and I wanted my nest car to be a standard Ford Mustang (close to retirement) but my 1995 Ford Probe threw a rod and I was tired of getting rides to work and renting cars on the weekend so I bought from Enterprise. I should have just bought a Ford Mustang automatic from Enterprise and traded it in for an standard when I retired this year.”

Anonymous, CA (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“it is fine to drive but it is boring, just no fun factor”

A W., WA (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“The acceleration is poor at slow and fast speeds. Handling in the winter is poor when more than 4 inches of snow. It does take curves extremely well. It doesn't take pot holes well at all.”

MOUNT P., IL (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Acceleration drags. Handling not as tight and responsive as the Accord.”

Anonymous, PA (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“The transmission (6 speed Automatic) shift very sluggish and sometime it is still in 4th gear at 65 miles an hour. I have to shift it manually. Had it in for service twice, and was told that there is nothing wrong.”

A V., NJ (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Alot of brake noise, rear. No mechanical problems.”

Anonymous, SD (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“My last car, a Honda Civic, drove as a more solid car. Noted going over bumps and breaking, especially on rough road.”

SHEILA W., CT (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“I like the car. Am disappointed in fuel economy.”

Anonymous, CA (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“It is simply a great car for the money in every regard.”

WILLIAM O., NC (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“The car has been reliable and handles well. For a small car, the performance is really quite good.”

PAUL D., FL (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Noisy ride causes high volume on radio and phone; poor insulation against outside noise. Trunk is not as good as VW. AC /air flow is unsatisfactory.”

ROBERT S., VA (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“It is just what it is advertised to be, an economical, practical car. Acceleration and handling are what you would expect. Adequate, but nothing special.”

“All but GPS”

Anonymous, KY (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“It's steering and handling are not quite as good as I would like.”

Anonymous, VA (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Steering is great. Handles really well. Only negative is the bar support on the left side of windshield from the driver's seat. It's placement obstructs your field of vision sometimes when making a left hand turn.”

Anonymous, FL (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“The acceleration is ok for a small car with 4 cylinders, but the handling is not so great. Car feels like it has a drag when coming to a stop and cornering at medium to high speeds feels unstable. If you hit a bump while cornering the front end loses traction and shifts/jumps toward the direction of centrigugal force”

MICHAEL C., CA (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“slow acceleration, stuttery transmission”

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

“Noisy hard to hear radio while driving”

RICHARD W., NY (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Bad: 1. Leather seats are cheaply made and worn looking with less than 12k miles. 2. Road noise is horrible. Good: It's comfortable but with the other failures, I don't trust the mechanism to control the comfort will last.”

Anonymous, NC (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Would prefer a car with less road noise at freeway speeds.Probably would have required buying a larger car.”

J R., OR (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Very noisy. Air conditioning doesn't cool well in hot & humid weather.”

JOHN J., NJ (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“The driver side a/c ports air is blocked by your hands and arms when they are in the 2/10 position”

Anonymous, CA (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

GERALD B., TN (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“DIFFICULT TO GET IN AND OUT, ESPECIALLY IF THE CAR IS PARKED ON AN UP INCLINE. TOO NOISY.”

E D., MB (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“A big noisey ride. The cooling/heating system is not as powerful as I'd like. In particular, the heating system doesn't keep me warm enough in the very cold winter.”

Anonymous, OH (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“seat positioning for driver very good A/C works well RIDE is terrible- you feel all bumps and i have almost lost control several times when the car hits a severe bump in the road”

Anonymous, OH (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Bumpy ride. You feel pretty much every pebble. But the prtice, safety, economy and style make it more than worthwhile. My next car is going to be a smooth ride. Tall people have trouble entering and exiting but seated have room.”

JOANNE P., WA (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“seat bottoms are a bit short, tire noise, stiff ride”

DAVE L., OH (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Quality. Zero problems since new. Comfort, Economy.”

JACK W., FL (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Front seat backs are too deep”

RICHARD C., GA (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Comfort is super nice. The only negative is road noise from under the car and wind noise, in spite of windows being closed! if this could be fixed my 2013 Hyundai Elantra would be on par with a luxury car.”

Anonymous, TX (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Road noise with the low-profile tires”

Anonymous, NH (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“At my age, need more supportive back support. Since car is low, I have difficulty getting in and out of drivers seat.”

DAVID C., NC (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“difficult to see traffic coming from right hand side because of side view mirror and column supporting roof.”

Anonymous, NJ (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Ride is quite stiff and the car is a bit noisy. Biggest problem was with the BRAKES: Grinding Noise right from the start. After only two years, the rear Brake Pads were wearing badly and in the words of the mechanic who did the repair and replacement. "REAR PADS SEIZED IN CALIPER BRACKET"”

Anonymous, ON (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Seats are ok for comfort. Only driver seat is adjustable”

ROBERT F., ON (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“The seats sit low and aren't the most comfortable on a long trip. Other than that this has been a great vehicle.”

THOMAS K., ME (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“The engine is a little loud when accelerating.”

KEN T., OH (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Suspension is too stiff and no travel over larger bumps especially rear suspension- rear axle hops .”

JOE C., ON (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Driver's seat a little hard. Feels uncomfortable after 1 hour of driving. Otherwise no issues.”

JERRY W., ON (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“You don't feel connected to the road. there is no feel in the steering wheel. Road noise comes into the car at highway speed.”

Anonymous, SC (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“My GT is feels good inside and out. Seats are comfortable and dash is well laid out.”

LUIZ A., ON (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“THE PASSENGER SEAT SETS WAY TO LOW AND IT CAN NOT BE RAISED..( THIS IS THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT).....”

CARY M., OR (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“difficult to enter & exit due to low roof line , seats uncomfortable on long trips over 200 miles for tall drivers”

Anonymous, FL (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“The Elantra is an economy car. As such, it lacks the comfort, quietness, and up-market cliate control features of many more expensive cars.”

Anonymous, WA (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“road noise and sometimes bumpy ride could be improved”

SUSAN M., MI (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“The only issue I have is that the driver side vents are somewhat blocked by the steering wheel. There is no way to aim the vents around the steering wheel.”

CYNTHIA I., MN (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“We found the Elantra to be an exceptional small car with outstanding comfort at an affordable price. We are, however, quite dissatisfied with the high level of road noise on longer trips. We're investigating a different brand of tire, but believe it would not be difficult for Hyundai to add better road noise insulation.”

GLENN J., MT (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“bumpy ride, and not very quiet”

JOHN D., ON (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“The leather seats are very uncomfortable & cause fatigue even on short trips of 30 miles. The suspension is brutal. If you hit a pothole you feel it from head to toe & the rear tends to hop off the ground when hitting a bump.”

DAVID B., NJ (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Ride is very stiff - feel every bump, Have had numerous flat tires from hitting potholes, etc.. Don't know if the flat tires are from the style of the tire and rim (sporty) or other factor.”

DEBRA R., NJ (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Location of A/C dash vents. Poor placement of center vents.”

STEPHEN P., AL (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Cabin is a little noisy.”

Anonymous, IL (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“There is more road noise in this car than I would like. Also, I am very short, and even adjusting the seat belt to the lowest possible position, it still hits me in the neck.”

JILL M., TX (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“The center of the seat is lower than the sides. My brother-in-law finds the sides hit/bother his hips on long drives. A cut-out seat cushion solved the problem. My mother, a backseat driver, benefits from the same cushion- to be able to see out the windows which are higher than my last car.”

SHEILA W., CT (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“There's not a bump in the road that this car doesn't react to.”

Anonymous, NJ (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Could do better on road noise”

MICHAEL B., FL (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Small interiors, bad seat comfort. For a person 5'10" difficult to get out of drivers seat. My car came equipped with run flat tires, and they are extremely low, reducing road to chassis clearance, therefore, augmenting risk of braking plastic protector.”

Anonymous, PR (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Suspension is good at handling most road defects but has a hard time responding to large potholes and lifted roadway segments. Sounds like shocks/springs are "bottoming out". Also noticeable over parking lot speed bumps. Seems to be a problem with the post-2011 Elantras, as others tell me of the same experience. Not sure if lower profile OEM tires contribute to the issue.”

DAVID S., NY (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Hear a little too much road noise”

JOHN S., NY (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Ride is smoother than Civic which is the other car I seriously considered; also smoother than the 2 previous cars I owned --- Acura RSX and Integra.”

DANNY J., CA (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Seats not comfortable for long drives. Noise level somewhat Uncomfortable.”

Anonymous, NY (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“The seats really need more support and better overall comfort.”

DANA M., MA (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“There is no adjustment on the passenger seat to increase the height, unlike the driver's seat, it make it hard to get into the vehicle”

Anonymous, GA (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Great car but I am considering a Chevy BOLT since there is a AAA charging station nearby. (PROVIDING GM comes out with a good lease price.) But getting a Bolt has nothing to do with my not liking the Hyundai--it is the best car I have ever owned.”

JACK W., OH (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“I had to add an adjustable lumbar seat for the driver for comfort. the passenger seat is too low; hard to get in and out and can't see over the hood.”

MOUNT P., IL (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“road noise very loud! side mirrors and other design details can obstruct vision”

Anonymous, TX (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Like everything except for road noise”

R W., PA (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“The ride seems to be very stiff, to the point that one feels every bump or crack in the pavement. I would rate the ride "poor." The ride is also noisy.”

GEORGE N., ON (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Overall,it is comfortable to me. It is louder than friends' cars and a little bumpier of a ride too (noticed by friends, not me)”

Anonymous, WA (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

JOSE S., FL (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“The car is very comfortable with lots of legroom, but the ride is a little noisy. Climate control is also great.”

CHRIS W., PA (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“The car is sometimes noisy and the handling is poor in winter even with excellent winter tires. It is a lackluster car and we plan to change it for a more luxurious car.”

JEAN-GEORGES L., QC (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

ROBERT B., MA (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Seats need to be flatter to seat wider passengers and drivers. The rise on the seat edges can get uncomfortable on long trips”

Anonymous, FL (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Road noise”

Anonymous, NH (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“We needed a car with ease of entry due to spinal injury. The Prius we loved did not allow us to keep it due to difficult smaller entry clearance. We really like the Elantra but the ride is quite rough and bumpy. We know the suspension could be improved and would pay more for that. The handling is great, the climate control is good, seats are fine, noise is a non-issue since we replaced the tires with much quieter ones.”

Anonymous, ON (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Seats started out comfortable, but after a few thousand miles, they lost some of their support and now I have to use pads to prevent back pain while driving. Climate control is fine, but it takes the AC a little too long to cool the car on a hot day. Road noise is a little louder than I would like. The ride is comfortable.”

ERIC I., PA (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Was lied to when purchasing the vehicle; told I would get 40Mpg and got 26; no spare tire; rough ride; crappy car”

Anonymous, TX (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“The car, overall, is very good. It's only weakness is that your feel every bump you go over. Also, when driving on the freeway, if there are grooves in the freeway, the car tends to follow those grooves and so if these grooves are not parallel to where the car is traveling, it can be a bit scary sometimes as it feels like the car is drifting into the next lane.”

DOUGLAS E., UT (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“The seats are fairly comfortable, the manual gearshift is excellent, and it probably SEEMS to ride better than it really does because there are no rattles or squeaks. One interior annoyance is the low position of the dashboard vents - I gather that was changed in later models.”

DAVID R., ON (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“front seating too low and minor brake issues due to height off the ground”

Anonymous, ON (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“Very tight seating, especially in the rear seats”

Anonymous, KY (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“I am dissatisfied with the ride of my Elantra, it seems that I feel even the smallest of bumps or potholes. The overall ride is choppy and bumpy.”

MICHAEL V., PA (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“The one thing I am discovering to dislike (ever since getting the Toyota Matrix) is the space /room of the vehicle. It's not very comfortable to get into. I typically hit my head on the top door sill. Compared to the Matrix, The cockpit is cramped. When we first bought the car, thought everything, including space, was good. Also I thought the car was quiet, and think it still is, but not compare to some other more expensive cars. Love the seats. Love the controls. After reading Consumer Repo”

They put one in alright, but I ended up paying for it and it was an after market and not the one that comes on this model from the factory. I felt ripped off. “Everyone in family likes it . Wife daughter me.”

RANDOLPHER F., PA (2013 Hyundai Elantra)

“more std. equip. than any in its class and less money. drives and handles very well. rear suspension seems a little soft on bumpy roads. 38 mpg on 2 lane hwys. and 34 on fast interstate. compared all in its class and it won easily.”

“It had low profile tires and large wheels. I wanted regular tires, but was told that would not be possible. I had a blow out before I even had a thousand miles on the car. cost me over two hundred dollars for new tire. The blow out happened on a small pothole. The ride on the low profile tires was awful. When these tires where worn I replaced the rims with 16" rims and bought 16" tires (all 4) It now drives like DIFFERENT car. What an improvement, but at a high cost of OVER $1,200.00.”

“Good- Very small turning radius. Bad- when putting down the back seats to make a bed, the front seats can't be pushed back or reclined. Bad- the engine was replaced in less than 3 years (free of charge). Bad- visibility at night is poor due to the positioning of the headlights. Also, I like the trunk space and the ability to fold down the back seats to make a flat, large area when need be. I do wish that the driver's seat had a little more cushion. My husband likes the h”
