The Elantra is a well-rounded competitor that ranks near the top of our small-sedan Ratings and out-points strong competitors such as the Ford Focus and Honda Civic. Easy to live with, the Elantra combines nimble handling with a comfortable, well-controlled ride and a neatly laid out, well-equipped interior. Coupe-like styling, with a beltline that swoops up toward the rear, can impede the view to the rear quarters.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Quieter than many other small cars, composed, fuel efficient, has automanuel transmission allowing the car to cruise and have power."

Anonymous, NC (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Due to my job in the local mountains, I cannot use this car. Be it the climb up the mountain in optimum conditions, or it's inability to handle severe weather conditions - it simply cannot do the job. A weak engine during the climb, less than surefooted handling when it is wet, or a weak AC intensifies the engine's lack of power when it is hot combine to make this my last choice to use for work."

JON B., CA (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Poor visibility to rear and front oblique. High steering effort. "Twitchy" accelerator response."

ALAN T., VA (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Great Fuel Mileage but the vehicle which has a 6-speed manual transmission is somewhat jerky in acceleration in the lower gears and stalls very easy in start up."

CRAIG H., CA (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Tho' a slightly smaller--bur more high tech engine, the 6-speed automatic transmission gives better acceleration than my 2009 Elantra SE and better gas mileage. 2016 Engine is turning 500 rpm less at 74 mph on freeway. 6-speed shifts are very smooth and well timed, both up and down. .. Because the 2016 SE has bigger, wider, low aspect ratio tires it handles extremely well for an inexpensive little car. It stops extremely short too. It is fun to drive..I've had absolutely no problems with it"

ROY S., TX (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Mostly handles fine. But going over bumps, the car seems to jerk a lot more than I'd expect. And going around corners, the engine revs highly as it seeks a lower gear."

DENNIS H., GA (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Handling is somewhat unpredictable over irregular road - can pull to one side suddenly."

SCOTT S., OR (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Lag in shifting when going uphill"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"I wish it had more hp"

RICHARD K., NJ (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"I have been a little disappointed with the acceleration of the car. It sometimes feels a bit pokey."

ANDREW C., IN (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Over all the car is great, however with the low profile tires (45) you feel every miner bump in the road plus some road noise because of the tires."

Anonymous, WV (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Took it to the dealer after a few weeks because it was sluggish at acceleration and felt like it was chugging, Dealership treated me like I was stupid and said it didn't chug on the highway. I didn't tell them that, it is when i am driving on the side streets, slow acceleration I will not have this car in 12 more months nor will I ever return to the dealer"

LINDA B., MO (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"I was worried about the handling of this vehicle in inclement weather because of the low price and size of this vehicle but this front wheel drive, very cheap sedan handles better in the snow and rain then some of the SUV's I have owned in the past!!! Awesome vehicle!!"

BOBBY G., UT (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Outstanding driving comfort, drove from So. California to Southwest Florida the month after purchase. Comfortable ride as well as great gas mileage. Very happy with car!"

JEANNIE F., FL (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"excellent performance overall"

MIKE B., AR (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Nice styling"

PAULINE W., WI (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"easy to handle both cases"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"The sports ability to change the steering options was a very Interesting experiment for me and given the types of roads l encounter I found the tight steering and engine response of the sport option gave me a feel of control I had never encountered before"

MALCOLM P., NS (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"ample acceleration for passing and from a stop position. great handling and road feel"

Anonymous, AB (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Dual transmission w/ 6 speeds - can operate in automatic mode or manual mode- this is great for on ramp acceleration and in passing up hill when needed. Also fun to drive daily. Traction control works great in sloppy conditions (rain, snow)."

Donald C., VA (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"It's not a sports car, but acceleration and handling are very good...a fun and safe car to drive in all Canadian seasons."

Dave H., ON (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Accelerates quickly and turns on a dime"

Denice B., WA (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"I like the acceleration of the car and the response of the steering"

Anonymous, AL (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"When driving around a curve in the road that has a railroad track in it, the back end of the car slides outward."

Anonymous, WI (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"The handling is tight and responsive. It has good acceleration when needed. It has a short turning radius and is easy to park."

Anonymous, AZ (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Solid feel relatively quiet for a small car"

Anonymous, MO (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Acceleration is sluggish - takes too long to get up to speed on the highway from a dead stop (like waiting to get onto the highway from a side road that intersects with the highway). Upgraded my tires now so that the care doesn't bottom out going over dips and low grade accesses into parking lots (for example)."

Anonymous, MN (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Engine lags as it's needs more "pep" which the newer engines can do now."

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Tires that came with the car lasted only 2 yrs."

Richard L., ON (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"The Elantra is very responsive and secure in its handling while driving both in traffic and on the highway. Excellent brakes and feedback from all systems while driving."

James M., FL (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Bot acceleration and handling are excellent in my opinion. It's a small 1.8L engine, but a high-tech one, and the outstanding 6-speed automatic transmission matches its torque curve well. Thus I get good acceleration and good gas mileage too. This engine turns 500 rpm less on freeway than my former 4-speed Elantra SE (2009). The wide low-aspect ratio tires provide the excellent handling. I drive pretty aggressively and take curves at far higher speeds than most drivers. I had the new Korean tires removed and replace with Michelin A/S tires before taking delivery, this because I had a tread separation with same Korean ties on my 2009. I'm 80 now, and in my lifetime have worn out about a dozen sets of Michelins with never any problem and always exceeding their guaranteed mileage life."

Roy S., IA (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"not bad for a small 4 banger, mine has a nice shifting 6 speed manual"

Anonymous, NB (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"The vehicle is not a pocket rocket and I've never expected otherwise, it does accelerate very adequately; handling is very adequate which I attribute to the vehicle's stability control system."

Herbert L., NJ (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"The Elantra has blind spots that helps you not see the car on the left coming up on me, it is scary on the highway!!!"

Karen J., FL (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Great gas mileage"

Anonymous, FL (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Acceleration from a stationary start can be sluggish, but may be due to eco drive setting. Handles well and predictably on the road."

Susan S., CO (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Poor acceleration. handling not nimble for a small car"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"The seat belt is cumbersome and does not retract very easily if I have it at the lowest setting"

DARLENE F., FL (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"The car suffers from a lot of road noise. The design of the windshield wipers is annoying. The driver's wiper blade is about 2' long while the passenger side is only about 8" long. The long blade creates a bad streak on the passenger side window."

Anonymous, MI (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"I like the car so much I trade in may 2013 Elantra GT for a 2016"

GARCIA J., DC (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"No room in the back eats for even my grandchildren it might as well be a two seater, only my dogs are comfortable in back no leg room at all"

LINDA B., MO (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"The handling is good, the bounce over uneven road is more than I like."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Pedals too close for steering wheel position. Needs telescoping steering wheel."

ALAN T., VA (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"I think the climate control vents should be more flexible. I don't think they move up, down or from side to side as much as they should (or as much as my former Toyota Corolla's did)."

HONORA D., VA (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Seats good support. Air takes a long time to cool down and on hot days only cools fair"

JO L., FL (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Everything is great so far. The price was much higher that the 2006 Sonata which I expected it only to be somewhat higher, due to it being a smaller vehicle."

CARLOS G., AZ (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"noisy ride"

RICHARD L., ON (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"On my Elantra GT teck model I would have expected a better passenger set. All manual adjustment and no adjustible lumbar."

KEN D., ON (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"everything seems to be ergonomically well placed, easy to reach , uncomplicated controls, good visability, easy simple overall controls."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Its small tires transmit every little defect in the road"

Anonymous, MD (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"We recently had very warm weather where I live, and this was the first time I have driven this vehicle in a warmer climate. I had the climate control on max A/C, and within minutes I had goosebumps from how cold the A/C was. The temperature outside was 93 degrees Fahrenheit outside. I was blown away by how well it worked, no pun intended."

DAVID E., MN (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Seats are comfortable although the passenger side seat is way too low. Rear seats are good for a car this size. The road noise on concrete roads is loud. Ride is very stiff and you feel every bump in the road. Climate control system is good"

WILLIAM H., NY (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"I am 5'10 and 210 lbs, but the seat is very snug around the hips"

Anonymous, VA (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Only negative I have is the comfort of the drivers seat as compared to my 2011 Elantra touring. Drivers seat is too narrow on the 2016 Elantra"

ROBIN J., FL (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Could use adjustable lumbar support on drivers seat"

Anonymous, NB (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Great ride and handling for price paid"

Ronald R., FL (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"adjustments on seats are easy to adapt to my height and shape. The noise level is really low The car is not swaying like the old days but absorbs most road irregularities with ease"

Anonymous, AB (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Seats are very comfortable and more than adequate for my needs...and for a small car the ride is very good, however there is limited suspension travel when hitting potholes, etc. The car does transmit road noise into the passenger compartment but not at an unacceptable level."

Herbert L., NJ (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"I would prefer less road noise"

Anonymous, TX (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Cabin noise from road, wind and engine are awful. The in this vehicle is worse than my previous 10 year old Elantra."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Seats are comfortable and easily adjusted. The ride is security and quite."

Wess M., IN (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"More external noise filters in than in the Sonata, but 2016 better in this respect than 2011. Seat adjustments provide very comfortable settings, including lumbar support, and heated seats are great - front & back."

Susan S., CO (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"comfort is good ride is good noise could be better"

Anonymous, CA (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"I find the front seats a little narrow but comfortable"

Anonymous, VA (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"The ride quality seems to have deteriorated especially the rear suspension. It has a twist beam rear suspension that can not control the vehicle over pot holes, ruts, etc. to the point that the car jumps from side to side when impacting such obstacles."

Thomas B., OH (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"passenger seat too low for my wife and not adjustable. Some road noise makes it difficult to hear radio. Rough ride on any road that is not well paved - worse during winter ride with snow tires."

Anonymous, NY (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Noisy ride inside cabin"

Anonymous, NE (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"The road and air noise is greater than I would like it to be"

Anonymous, AL (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Seats not really comfortable. Lumbar support mediocre"

Richard M., NC (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"headrests are not adjustable. Bad angle and very uncomfortable. Would like to have headrests that we can change the angle since my wife had surgery."

Anonymous, CA (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Very stiff can be uncomfortable after driving a couple of hours"

Anonymous, ON (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"When idle in drive there a little vibration of the engine"

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Just too cramped but couldn't afford a larger model."

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"For the price this car is very comfortable. It is noisy, but that is a function of it being a hatch back."

Randy M., TX (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Outstanding value for the money. Dealer beat all the NewCar dealer offers."

JOHN L., MA (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Many features are available with a tech package that comparable cars don't have. The tech package was just a few hundred dollars more and worth every penny."

DEBORAH G., CO (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"This car was only a little over $20K but I bought the Value Edition and got a load of extra useful options for very little money. You can't go wrong for the money. It's no sports car, acceleration is adequate but car stumbles on bumpy roads and can be noisy. Still, a good car for around town, easy to handle and park."

WILLIAM H., NY (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"LEASE FOR 169 A MONTH, NO DOWN PAYMENT"

Anonymous, OK (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"mid size sedan style; feels like a larger car"

Anonymous, NJ (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"For the price (low) it has provided satisfactory performance, comfort, mileage, appearance - essentially meets all the basic requirements for (so far) reliable transportation. Obviously it's not a luxury sedan but once again: the price is low."

GILBERT H., ON (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"It travels too low to ground and catches on parking stops. Viability not good has bad blind spots area. Somewhat noisy cannot get road noise from interfering with conversations and music"

LINDA D., FL (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"It performs quite well, has relatively good comfort, and gets exceptional gas mileage (over 40 on the highway). An exceptional value for the price I paid. Close to a Honda Civic but at a significantly lower price."

JERRY S., CO (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"The car is very good and we like it but the dealership financial managers ripped us off with trick contract leasing the car adding in 3 years of maintenance on the contract saying it was free but turned out they charged us extra in the contract and we got stuck paying way more $293 a month for the 2016 Elantra lease which is way more than they advertised at $179/month for 3 year lease. Fought with manager to no avail because he said we signed the contract and its tough luck! Shady Long Island Ci"

"best warranties, rebates and overall buyer incentives of ANY manufacturer."

MIKE B., AR (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"It's just been a great car. The bargained price was excellent. 40 mpg on the freeway if driven under 65."

JOHN H., UT (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"This car is a wonderful value for a $179 a month standard lease. It is one of the best automotive values possible."

JON B., CA (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Compared to small sedans from Honda, Toyota, Ford, and Mazda, the Elantra gives a lot more bang for the buck. While it doesn't drive quite as nicely as the Civic or Mazda 3, it has more features and great room in front and back, and the driving experience isn't that much worse. It's great for around town driving and ok on the highway where it doesn't have as much acceleration when merging from ramps or trying to pass."

ROBERT G., VA (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Good on gas. Ride is little noisy"

Richard L., ON (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"I HATE THE SEAT BELTS. THEY DO NOT RETRACT EASILY"

Anonymous, PA (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"I'm satisfied with everything except the tires. One was defective very early (bubble). All tires wore very quickly (under 40000 miles)"

Kenneth K., IN (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

Anonymous, VA (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Great value and better than average warranty. Also good styling"

Anonymous, MO (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"A good car with many options that were standard. Room for 4 adults. Road noise could be excessive on certain surfaces and you feel every bump in the road. Good mileage on highways."

William H., NY (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"The car looks good, is comfortable and drives easy and was available for a very good price (he beat the lowest price available from a buy service offered by Consumer Reports."

Anonymous, MA (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Hyundai does no oversight of their dealers. Dealer lost my key fob, then refused to replace it, then dumped some kind of solvent on a floor mat, because I sent a tow truck to remove it from there without allowing them to work on it, which caused it to dissolve, when I complained to Hyundai about them, they said "Just go to another dealership in the future," and didn't do a thing to help me."

Mike S., NV (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"I've always been a Toyota owner but when I drove the Elantra I was sold. It cost less than a Corolla, the styling was better, the interior appointments were more for the money, and the 5 year warranty couldn't be beat. Plus, it's fun to drive."

Anonymous, AZ (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"The size of the auto is just right for my needs. It has more systems than I will ever use, though. All I wanted was cruise control and a simple radio, but it has much more. The price when I bought it new was what I expected to pay."

Anonymous, TX (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"The value is great, but we found the lease price is more than is sustainable. I could have gotten more for my money by buying another car."

Anonymous, NC (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"For dollars spent a GREAT car, Good gas milage, reliable, comfortable, and a pleasure to drive"

Ronald R., FL (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

Anonymous, AZ (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Great options on this trim level. Bought car for son in college and he loves it."

Anonymous, FL (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"This car as a daily driver was a TREMENDOUS value, I was able to get this car with the value edition (sunroof and some electronic upgrades) at under 20k. this compares really well against all the other vehicles which are similar."

Anonymous, WI (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"For me, the value is OUTSTANDING. For a small, inexpensive sedan it handles amazingly well (with the wide low-aspect ratio wheels and tires--have Michelin A/S on it). Acceleration is also excellent. I love its 6-speed automatic with its smooth fast shifts both up and down). I bought this Elantra SE new 9/30/15, and--in almost 3 years and 28k miles of driving--I've not had a single problem with it. Even the factory alignment was all in tolerance, holds settings well. I've gotten 40 mpg on pure highway driving @ 60 mph (35 mpg@70-75), 28 mpg min with pure town driving, and an average overall of about 32 mpg"

Roy S., IA (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Car does what was intended. Gets you from A to B rather economically"

Richard M., NC (2016 Hyundai Elantra)

"Good price for a reliable and good looking car."

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

"Great looks. It looks like a smaller Sonata. There is much more inside room from the previous Elantras."

CARLOS G., AZ (2016 Hyundai Elantra)
