Contemporary compact sedans have grown roomier, more substantial, and more fuel efficient. These aren't the tiny, "first new cars" the segment used to be. Case in point, the Hyundai Elantra. The Elantra delivers the roominess and fuel economy to compete in this crowded segment, but it falls short in refinement and performance. User-friendliness is an Elantra strong point, aided by a relatively spacious interior.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"the most boring car I've ever driven. nothing stands out. feels like I'm driving an appliance. boring acceleration, boring handling. it has no character of any kind"

Matthew J., TX (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

"As I had hoped, the sport model has decent acceleration and handling. Getting onto a highway or passing, the turbo kicks in and the car does what it should."

John S., NC (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

"Good super acceleration when merging onto highway."

Ellen B., PA (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

"The car lags and lurches at times for no apparent reason. I take my foot off the gas and the car 'dies', then suddenly picks back up. It's been this way since I got it, so I guess it how the car drives. Not happy.."

Anonymous, MD (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

"This Hyundai Elantra Sport Sedan corners very well. I also own a MINI Cooper S, and the Hyundai can definitely keep pace with it on the twisty mountain roads of East Tennessee. The 1.6L turbo engine has plenty of punch, and the 6-speed manual shifts very smoothly, even more smoothly than the 6-speed manual on my MINI. This car is a lot of fun to drive, and it gets about 35 MPG on the highway, and it does it on regular 87-octane gasoline. It is a great value."

Ronald H., TN (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

"A little hesitation when staring out."

Anonymous, IA (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

"Very well behaved for a small car. Hyundai has really done well with this car!"

John M., AL (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

"Handling is very good and it rides good for the level of handling it provides"

Anonymous, OH (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

"It is very fuel efficient and the acceleration is impressive for such an economical car"

Jerry S., AZ (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

"It is amazing that we get the kind of driving experience we do from a 4 cylinder engine."

Ronald V., FL (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

"All are very good."

Anonymous, AL (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

"handling is much improved over the the 2013 model of the same car"

Anonymous, TN (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

"Very good acceleration and handling"

Ramiro E., ON (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"missing lumbar support that I have on my 2014."

Anonymous, OH (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

"It may be that my comparison is to the Lexus, but the ride on the Elantra is much harsher...feel every bump. I've test driven a Sonata recently and it's ride is much nicer than the Elantra. The Elantra is the first car of it's size that we've owned so it may just be that small cars have a harsher ride. It's still fun to drive and excellent value for the money!"

Anonymous, MA (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

"Could use a little more back support."

Jeff-Elaine S., PA (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

"The car has a very QUIET ride. I am petite and the car is comfortable for me to drive."

Celeste B., NC (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

"Higher wheels on this model so ride is smoother. Seats are very comfortable."

Anonymous, NY (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

"Seats were very comfortable for a 3000 trip just taken Road noise high in back seat"

Richard B., AZ (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

"This car is so quiet. There is an overall feel of solidity in this car. Four wheel disk brakes, sunroof, push button start, proximity key recognition, Apple Carplay, Android Auto. All in for about $18k. Incredible value."

Anonymous, NY (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

"Heated seats, love."

Anonymous, GA (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

"ride is smooth; noise level quite good; driver's seat is a little small for me, at 165 lbs.0"

Anonymous, WA (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

"This car is an extremely comfortable vehicle to drive. The seats are great, the level of noise isolation is excellent and the ride quality is superb."

Anonymous, NH (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

"Ride and handling are very good. Seats provide poor back support. I have not had back pain while driving a vehicle until I bought this car."

Bill C., IL (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"I have two 2017 Elantras and a 2018 Elantra (two are Limited) Amazing car for the price ...did not pay anywhere near sticker price and have cars packed with tech and safety systems ...AEB with pedestrian detection/ LKA/ Blind Spot Monitoring Dynamic bending Headings / High Beam Assist /...ETC.... an audio system that is just so very easy to use...with the 2.0L the car(s) has done over 40 MPG on the HWY. Great and proven safety features... from a recent accident my daughter walk away from after being rear ended by a truck she was in one of the 2017 Elantras. I did alot of shopping and comparing and for what I got from Hyundai in the Elantra - for the price I actually paid for the Elantra no other car brand was even close..."

Virginia D., VA (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

"A/c, sunroof, heated seats, 7 inch touchscreen, push button start etc... This car has most options people want, at a great price. You cannot option this car"

Don M., TX (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

"I bought this brand new Hyndai Elantra Sport Sedan for under $20,000, and I also got 0% financing for 72-months. This car is a lot of fun to drive, it has great acceleration, and it handles corners as well as my MINI Cooper S does. This is my first Hyundai, and I am thoroughly impressed so far with the value for the money."

Ronald H., TN (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

"comparable vehicles are somewhat more expensive; improvements made by Hyundai over 2004 model (which we still have because it has aged well) are impressive0"

Anonymous, WA (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

"Seems to be a good value for the money. Works well for a young family. Trunk is small- packed with just groceries and a stroller."

Anonymous, GA (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

Anonymous, KS (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

"As a leased car, I am completely satisfied with my monthly payment and the amount of money I had to pay up front. Dealer was very easy to work with and very accommodating."

Anonymous, NY (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

"Used a no-haggle dealer (third time!), so experience was excellent. Everything I wanted was included in price (except I did pay extra for leather). Value Edition was middle choice of five on the Elantra."

Michael F., VA (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

"great mileage and great interior room. Steering is wonderful.Backup camera and ease of parking are great. We appreciate the great reliability of Hyundai products."

Anonymous, AL (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

"I got a very good deal from the dealership on the new car and for my trade-in. I only wish it had a built in CD player. It only came with a radio."

Anonymous, NC (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

"Excellent value all around at avgreat price"

Anonymous, CA (2018 Hyundai Elantra)

"These cars are loaded for the price!"

"Excellent value - the car has all the bells and whistles I want in a car with reasonable cost."

Jonathan R., WA (2018 Hyundai Elantra)
