Hyundai Santa Fe Sport

The Santa Fe Sport is a stylish and well-equipped two-row mid-sized SUV comparable in size to the Chevrolet Equinox and Ford Edge. It has much to recommend it, as well as a couple of annoying shortcomings that prevent it from scoring higher than it does in our SUV Ratings. The Sport comes with lots of features for the money. It's also roomy, comfortable, fuel-efficient, and stylish.

What Owners Say

"Significant improvement over my 2010 Santa Fe even though they were both 4 cylinders"

JIM U., TX (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"Wow, does the engine HESITATE from a dead start unless you actively select SPORT driving mode! Blind spots are a problem: thank God for blind spot warning system! Strongly recommend forward impact warning/braking system as well. Steering is almost TOO responsive. Brakes excellent. If you add crossbars to roof rack, expect to lose 2 mpg in gas mileage. AWD drive system ROCKS! Must comment 3rd: layout of dash controls: they are confusing, and many important buttons are hidden from view."

STEPHEN B., IN (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"got a straight 4 was told how good it was with power but wish I got a v6"

Anonymous, NC (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"Would prefer just a bit more power without having to get expensive turbo."

Anonymous, AZ (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"Handles well in traffic or out on interstate. Acceleration not great but good enough and economical on long trips."

MIKE B., NC (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"very easy to handle. Comfotable drive"

PIETER K., MI (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"Transmission unnecessarily downshifts two gears on cruise control to maintain speed. Using manual shifting, I often was able to sustain the set speed in 6, or dropping just to 5, and not 4 which it did automatically. This was a major savings in engine RPM (1000 rpm typically)."

GERARD H., PA (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"I purchased the vehicle with the 2.0 Turbo engine. It has all the instant power needed and the three driving modes really let me determine the driving experience i want at any given moment. I think you did a disservice by only testing the vehicle with the base engine."

STEVE C., SC (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"I don't like the small high RPM Twin Turbo. Much rather have a V6."

ROBERT K., IL (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"The engine with respect to acceleration is significantly better than the comparable competitors models"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"Needs more power Needs larger gas tank"

Anonymous, FL (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"Handling is great, however, while in the ECO mode, the vehicle is rather sluggish when accelerating"

Anonymous, NL (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"Hyundai lowered the engine output by 5 horsepower. It is noticeable. The cruise control is annoying because it is constantly down shifting on hilly highways."

Mark W., CT (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"Superb handling and acceleration from a relatively small displacement engine (2.0 liter turbo)"

Anonymous, CO (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"The 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe (Ultimate package) is great! In Eco mode, the acceleration can be sluggish so I use the other two modes and invoke the turbo to make surging passes on the freeway or to accelerate into traffic before switching back to Eco mode. Having the option to do that is great!"

Allen T., WA (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"Excellent acceleration when needed."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"It handles all conditions very well."

Anonymous, MT (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"Since it is only a 4 cylinder the pick-up is not a good feature."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"Underpowered. Fuel economy not what I'd expect for small engine and small car."

Mike P., IA (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"For its size, the car handles well and is very responsive"

Anonymous, PA (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"Very agile. Turns on. A dime very easy to navigate everywhere. You can park it anywhere. Cameras are great it gives a 360 degree view form above. Very responsive and great acceleration. The turbo does have a very small delay when it kicks in. I drive a lot of freeway miles and get on average 24 mpg. The cabin is roomy and extremely comfortable. I will keep driving it until the wheels fall of."

Davida H., GA (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"I have been extremely pleased with the 4 cylinder, 2.0 Turbo. It performs well both on the highway and in the Mountains at 10,000 feet. The MPG on our trips to Colorado and Arizona ranges from 26 to 30 MPG on the highway!"

Don W., TX (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"can be sluggish on hills"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"Cruise control. Rough downshifting when going upgrade and downgrade. I don't like it."

Lynn A., IA (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"Good economy"

Anonymous, CA (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"handling is good, but acceleration is lackluster."

Anthony S., NY (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"We don't like the hesitation experienced when trying to accelerate trying to merge onto the interstate."

Marbeth G., KY (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"4 cylinder has impressive acceleration even at hwy speeds and great on corners and handling @ hwy speeds."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"Acceleration is rather sluggish. The car has difficulty with cruise control when going up even small hills."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

""ECO" mode seems to be useless. It just seems to bog down acceleration. It might be good on a long highway trip, which I haven't done. Otherwise handles nicely and rides OK."

Anonymous, OH (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"Acceleration is sluggish going up neighborhood hills. It seems to struggle. My husband complains about acceleration from a stop."

Susan B., TN (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"Overall it isn't bad, but with eco mode enabled there is a noticeable hesitation in acceleration, more so than any other vehicle I've driven with an eco mode option."

Steve G., PA (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"Could use more pickup on acceleration. Seems to struggle to get to highway speed."

D F., NY (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"The acceleration is as great as me previously v6"

Sandra W., TX (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"The transmission isn't very good. It overshoots in going from first to second and second to third gears. This sometimes leads to hesitant acceleration. The steering and braking are fine."

Anonymous, MD (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"The steering is such that you can not let your eyes leave the road for a few seconds or it will be wandering. Acceleration is adequate.and can be adjusted to Sport Drive Mode."

Anonymous, BC (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"The turbo charged engine allows for rapid acceleration which is fun"

Anonymous, SC (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"This vechile has no problem mercy or moving through traffic and when sport mode is selected it definitely give the vehicle added acceleration. But I rarely use the sports mode"

Richard H., KY (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"It's a four that thinks it's a six."

Eugene M., WI (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"Santa Fe handles well with good acceleration. AWD is excellent in snow. I like it better than 4WD which I had on my previous pickup trucks."

Thomas M., NJ (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"Enough power to ascend all the mountain passes near our home in the Rocky Mountains. However the cruise control causes the engine to rev on hills, both up and down. It is only useable on flat drives. Good handling with a surprisingly tight turn circle."

Anonymous, BC (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"Excellent handling, acceleration, and safety features."

Anonymous, MD (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"It has terrific pick up. No hesitation when entering the freeway. More powerful transmission than my 2016 Hyundai Tucson."

Susan S., TX (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"the turbo often causes a split second pause or delay in acceleration, which can be dangerous"

Anonymous, CO (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"Love this car"

Anonymous, MI (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"Very slow and noisy when accelerating."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

Gerry F., NC (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"great car"

Anonymous, TX (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"I find there are lags in acceleration, particularly after turning a corner and accelerating or making a u-turn, the engine almost seems to stall, and then launching much more aggressively than expected"

Brad S., BC (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"Transmission is rough during accelerating and decelerating."

Bernard M., MD (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"The size of this car is multifunctional for town, city, back road driving. Both local and long distance trips are a pleasure."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"Road Noise is too loud."

Anonymous, TX (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"cruise control and the torque from the turbo combines for very little downshifting"

Anonymous, AB (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"We leave it in Eco mode most of the time and it is a bit sluggish on initial accelerations and on windy mountain roads. Putting it in sport mode usually helps. It feels heavy in sharp turns."

"The turbo definitely help acceleration"

Anonymous, UT (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

Anonymous, OK (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"hard to get into...you have to "back into" the seats to avoid hitting your head...and I am not tall."

David C., GA (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"The car has allot of road noise compared to my 2013 ford taurus. But based on the delta in price (Taurus 12k more), guess that is expected. On long trips I still prefer the 2017 hyundai. The driving position is more comfortable and navigating thru Waze with the the android feature off the car screen is superb."

Laird B., FL (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"good looking, reliable, drives well, lots of interior room. Name is improving as quality improves and public accept the change in product development. Not as sophisticated as a Volvo, Audi to Mercedes but not that far off. I own a new Volvo, just gave up an Audi Q5 diesel. Hyundai is very good."

Daryl C., BC (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"Sport setting on transmission selection solves engine lugging in stop and go freeway traffic in big city."

"Acceleration is very good but handling leaves a lot to be desired."

Anonymous, FL (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"There is a serious problem with the acceleration of the vehicle in certain instances. If you begin accelerating out of a parking lot or off a driveway and have your wheels turned, many times the anti-skid feature activates and you can not accelerate. One day this is going to cause a serious accident and somebody will get hurt or worse."

ROBERT K., IL (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

KENNETH B., NY (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"Front seat design is problematic. The contour edges of the seat is raised so high that it takes effort to get in/out of car. As a road car, it is light, tends to "wander" on the road, and one can feel the bumps. I'm sure weight reduction, which helps the gas mileage, suffers in ride comfort."

The Santa Fe Sport has a ride comparable to full-sized vehicles. We recently took a 2,200-mile road trip and after the longest day of driving (14 hours) all 4 passengers were tired but not from being "road weary". "Some creature comforts which are common on many suv's missing here: Rear Heavy trunk lid not automatic closing side mirrors don't have turn signal blinkers"

"Poor value in having to pay for audio / navigation installed hardware as part of the total price paid for the vehicle which then requires you to pay for subscriptions if those items are to be of use. If you don't pay those installed items may as well be bricks. I'm talking to you SiriusXM. But this also applies to navigation and at least one feature of the audio system."

"The Hyundai is a great value for the money."

Leann H., TX (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"Excellent"

Joseph F., NJ (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"Safety. Besides the competitive price, I have and use 360 degree surround cameras, blind spot warning, tire pressure monitors with individual actual pressure readings. Safety is included in this great value."

R B., TX (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"Basically all the safety features (forward collision protection, adaptive cruise, lane departure, rear cross traffic. surround camera, etc.) found on a loaded luxury vehicle and work flawlessly. Better mileage than many similar SUVs. Excellent ride, handling and seat comfort."

B S., BC (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"I got a great deal on the Hyundai (almost $6000 off). I was looking for all-wheel drive and the deal I received was compelling."

Gerry F., NC (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"I owned a 2015 BMW X4. My 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe offers many of the same amenities PLUS others that BMW didn't offer (cooled seats, panoramic sunroof, and more) or offers them at a substantially lower cost--not to mention that insurance is significantly lower on the Hyundai."

Allen T., WA (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"Excellent deal. Got 2017 version of my 2014 vehicle with 5,000 miles from dealer as demonstrator. It has the added features of 2017 Tech package with forward and side cameras for 360 view, forward assist braking, etc. No other new vehicles could approach the cost. Also it has middle rear seat tether for child seat which is not in Honda CR-V or Odyssey. I looked online at reviews at those two plus Kia Sorento,(I purchased and enjoyed Sorento first year it was out) Ford Escape, Explorer, and Toyot..."

"Comparatively, a great car for the money"

Allen M., CA (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"Considering the amount of "standard" features that are included on the 2.0T trim level, the value for the price is very good as compared to the Ford or Mini vehicles we have most recently owned. There weren't any 2.0T AWD Santa Fes available within 500 miles of my location, so I wasn't able to get one without paying extra. But, that would be the only other feature I would like to have added to my purchase. The was an AWD available in the Ultimate, but paying the extra $4500 to get the Ultimate p..."

"A very solid car at a great price. The standard warranty is a plus."

Martin H., NY (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"This car is brand new to us, we bought it on 8/15/2017, so less than a week ago. My husband likes it, and he thinks we got a good deal. It had a lot of nice features, and lots of safety ones."

Judith P., CA (2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport)

"this is number 3, for us great car for value"
