With the Sonata's 2015 redesign, Hyundai made some significant improvements. They both improved ride and reduced road noise. The styling became more upright and less sleek, but it still looked pretty sharp. The new design made access easier and the view out appreciably better. As before, controls are easy to reach and simple to use.

Thomas D., NY (2015 Hyundai Sonata SE 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Passenger-side front door handle broke while passenger was opening it. This was in Dec 2017. Apparently, it was a defective grommet that held the handle assembly in place, It took the dealer 20 days (over the holidays) to repair this handle. This was the second occurrence on my Hyundai. About 18 months ago, the same grommet broke on the drivers-side rear door. That only took 10 days to repair. Steve W., WA (2015 Hyundai Sonata Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)
Seat belts

"Drivers side seat belt failed to retract fully. Many times were closed on by the door. If I tossed the belt on the seat I'd end up sitting on it the next time I used the car. I had it in the dealer 3 times and they finally did a partial fix on this item so it's not as irritating"

Problem(s) fueling the tank

"Common problem apparently, the fuel door latch breaks without any user error from simply activating the opening mechanism from inside the vehicle, so the fuel door is locked and cannot be accessed. My wife was stranded when she got to a gas station and couldn't fuel up. They charge $350 for that repair."

"The computer for the GPS and the multi use display needed the unit's firmware/software to be reinstalled. The clock at first did not change time, then it stopped displaying. The firmware/software reinstall fixed the problem. The dealer didn't even charge for that."

Headlights

"Had this problem since We drove it home brand new, HID low beams were aimed too high, causing other drivers to flash their lights because I was blinding them, and high beams made no difference on visibility down the road because they were aimed way too high and lit up the tops of trees not the road ahead, had it to the dealer for this problem about four or five different times, first they said that headlights could not be adjusted, then on another visit they said there was limited adjustment and"

Nancy-Jim D., TX (2015 Hyundai Sonata Limited 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"Car has HID headlights, they were defective when I picked up the new car from the dealer, took over two years and three or four trips to the dealer before a new service manager swapped out the defective ? assemblies. PROBLEM High beams pointed into tree tops and low beams were too high causing me to blind other drivers at night, causing them to flash their brights at me, Got to the point I would not drive the car at night, Dealer said they could not be adjusted but was able to adjust them after which they were too low, took it back to dealer and had then adjusted back to factory settings, finally they replaced both left and right headlight assemblies under warranty with new ones cost $1600 each, $3200, plus labor had to take front end r assembly off car, now headlights are marginally acceptable, Low beams OK but not great, No flashing from other drivers, High beams still way too high but marginally functioning, they over shoot most distance objects road signs but light up the overhead freeway signs COOL but I would like the light on the Road, What A Concept This appears to be a design problem which I suspect has affected many drivers, made for dangerous night driving till they were replaced over TWO YEARS."

Having the windows fog up is really annoying. Otherwise, I love this car. i have owned cheaper cars with much better climate control systems. This is my 3rd Sonota, and all have had this issue."

Alan R., DE (2015 Hyundai Sonata 2.4-L 4 Cyl)

"It involved the "knock" sensor. In September the check engine light was flashing & the car would not go over 30 mph. New wiring harness was installed. Was fine until March 2, 2020. I was traveling from the Cleveland auto show home to Cincinnati. Luckily I was in a rest area when it happened. Car was towed (30mph doesn't cut it on I-71. The dealer reprogramed it said I could pick up the car & return the rental. Soon after they called to say the check engine light was blinking again. They brought me a 2020 Sonata SEL new off the lot as a courtesy car. I got my car back April 17. (much of the time delay was due to coronavirus chaos) Ultimately they replaced the knock sensor tested the car for 3 days & returned it to me.(2 hour drive each way) All of this was covered under warranty even though this car is out of warrantynow. Except for the coronavirus I would probably have lease a 2020 Sonata limited. I would not buy one in a redesign year. Sonata offers what others don't a lot of equipment & easy to use controls although the 2020 Limited controls are not as simple. Still those controlas beat Honda & Mazda. I'd buy a Camry, but I can't get a heated steering wheel, ventilated seats, etc. I would also only consider a 2017 or older Camry due to headlight ratings. But for now I'll keep the Sonata."
