Revised for 2018, the Hyundai Sonata keeps much of what makes it a strong competitor against such big dogs as the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, while making some notable enhancements. Look beyond the freshened skin, and you'll find a Sonata with sharper handling and better braking than before, but the ride has become considerably firmer.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Owner Satisfaction with:

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"Plenty of pep to merge on interstates"

Anonymous, OH (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"Good at both in Comfort and Sport modes. Less so in Econ mode."

Anonymous, NY (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"Acceleration and handling are excellent. We took it on a 2300 mile trip to the Tetons and Yellowstone and had up to 40 mpg on the highway."

Gerald S., TX (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"I had a 2006 and a 2009 Sonata with the 3.3 liter six. I had plenty of acceleration and very good comfort. I am about to retire within the next two years and we decided it would be best to replace (and pay for) my 2009 Sonata. I really like everything about my new Sonata, but I am having to get used to less power. Acceleration is more than adequate, but it kind of runs out of ooph at 75 (Interstate merge in Alabama) The comfort and quietness is better than my 2009 which was really very good. I have the ultimate package so I have features I haven't gotten to yet, but I can already see that this is a better car for my future. We probably won't ever get rid of the Genesis coupe."

Elaine C., AL (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"acceleration is surprisingly good considering it is a non turbo engine. The engine is somewhat noisy though."

Michael B., NC (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"Very quick and responsive"

Anonymous, OH (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"WILL GET UP AND GO WHEN YOU NEED IT TO"

Michael D., TN (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"Smooth and lively acceleration"

Donald D., WA (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"Excellent in every aspect. As comfortable as my last two cars (Hyundai Azeras). Performance in highway driving is excellent for a 2.4 L 4 cylinder engine, even in steep mountain driving on I 70; even when loaded with luggage and 3 passengers. Acceleration is surprisingly good for a 4 cylinder. Trunk capacity is the same as my 2013 Azera. I have almost all safety systems and they are great!"

Anonymous, WY (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"HANDLES BEAUTIFULLY - VERY RESPONSIVE."

Kathy K., WI (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"Transmission tends to hang-up when shifting to another gear thus losing its smoothness"

Anonymous, MD (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"The acceleration is very peppy and handling is very responsive"

Thomas D., NH (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"Wonderful controls such as lane control and speed control.,"

Anonymous, FL (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"Handling is very good. Acceleration is much better than I anticipated."

Anonymous, MD (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"the turbo charged engine has plenty of pep and the 6 speed transmission shifts smoothly. Steering was enhanced this year and is very responsive"

Anonymous, VA (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"I was pleasantly surprised on the acceleration from the 4 Cylinder engine. It feels like 3 degrees of acceleration are available . And from such a big car."

Joseph B., CA (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"smoothness of ride and fastness of acceleration"

Anonymous, FL (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"Love the 2.0 Turbo growl & acceleration!"

Anonymous, FL (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"Sinatra's mid-range pickup is poor."

James K., VA (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"Handling seems to be improved compared to the 2011 Sonata I traded in for it. The steering appears to be very precise. Acceleration and driving experience are best in Sport Mode, which approximates that of the Mazdas I have driven. Eco Mode is mostly useless and I do not find significant differences from the default Comfort Mode."

Anonymous, AL (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"The Sonata has a "Sport" mode which provides better acceleration and handling. I use this mode when necessary and really appreciate it."

Marius G., CO (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"I like to be able to change from eco to sport. Makes big difference."

Ron W., SC (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"seat base is a little firm, could be softer"

Anonymous, FL (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"Overall the value of the car for the money paid for the Limited Ultimate was fair. The comfort of the seats, road noise and stiff ride are definitely not up to par with my previous Lexus ES 350. All in all, the value for amount paid, and the excellent appearance of the car are very good. The air conditioner does not cool the car properly on hot days when the car is in direct sunlight."

Russell H., NY (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"HOW IT HANDLES ON THE ROAD IN A CURVE"

Michael D., TN (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"Driver seat is very comfortable with lumbar support. Noise level is reduced from my 2015 Sonata. Ride is about the same as the 2015."

Thomas D., NY (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"Std cloth seats 6 way manual positionIng lumbar support feature. Seats are extremely comfortable with exceptional back and side support. Ride is smooth not choppy less sporty Road noise is acceptable but not perfect"

David S., NJ (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"I have power seats but have never had to move my seat, ride is quite and smooth"

Anonymous, OH (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"Seats are somewhat low for short people. Also, Hyundai did not equip this model with power controls"

Anonymous, NH (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"Very comfortable on long and short drives very quiet on highway and smooth."

Bob L., NJ (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"This car is as good as a more expensive car. Ride, comfort, looks. Its very quite. There's nothing not to like."

Jeanette S., NC (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"The seat could be more comfortable for long trips. A lumbar support on the passenger seat would be appreciated!"

Edward H., IL (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"Can get loud during acceleration."

Thomas P., KY (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"Very nice comfortable and stylish ride. love the heated and cooled seats."

Shawn S., CO (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"Better then the other cars I looked at."

Benjamin B., UT (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"The seats are incredibly comfortable and provide enough support without being too bolstered. There is also very generous legroom and shoulder room in the front and back of the car. I also like the step in height (not too low) as well as the low noise levels."

Tyler R., MO (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"nice quiet car. seating and ride are very nice"

Thomas D., NH (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"Seats are. Not comfortable, poor adjustments"

Anonymous, OH (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"We can not open the sunroof if driving over 30mph. It hurts your ears, even when cracking the window. Very noisy."

Paula G., MO (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"The comfort and support you feel, sitting in the car seats, plus the low, road, noise level you hear."

Joseph B., CA (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"Very comfortable to drive. Lumbar support is very good because I have a bad back. Seat warmers are great. Ride is generally quiet."

Anonymous, MD (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"The car is a great value, both in purchase price. The six speed transmission provides good acceleration and fuel economy."

Gerald S., TX (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"Very little money down and a mid-200 dollar monthly payment for a vehicle that handles and rides decently and includes all of the new safety technology."

Anonymous, NY (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"Got what I wanted and not much I did not want. Fortunately, smart cruise control, stay in lane and auto braking were add ons at additional cost, as I see no need for them and did not purchase them. In my opinion if you don't want to drive your car and pay attention. . . TAKE A CAB! I was disappoint Hyundai adds on stupid stuff like cargo net and wheel locks automatically."

Janice B., PA (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"Gas mileage and reliability record."

Kevin L., TX (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"Best price of any other vehicle in its class and has all the new safety and convenience features. The 100K warranty isn't bad either."

Anonymous, VA (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"I would be happier with my purchase if they didn’t cut corners to keep costs down. I would rather pay a little more rather than have so many hard interior surfaces or such flimsy sun visors (which feel like barely padded and covered cardboard)."

Anonymous, PA (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"BEST HYUNDAI WE HAVE HAD YET. THIS IS #3 AND WE ARE THOROUGHLY PLEASED WITH IT."

Kathy K., WI (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"The Sonata SEL+ that I have is a great value for money. I have the tech package that includes a full suite of safety features such as radar cruise control and collision braking. This with Apple CarPlay, a 10 year warranty, smart access keys, etc. is an incredible value. I payed just under 23,000 with rebates for this vehicle which is far more value for money than I could have gotten from Honda or Toyota."

Tyler R., MO (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"I compared it to other cars in its class and thought it to be the best value for the price"

Ron W., SC (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"This is my fifth Hyundai. I do not believe any other brand gives as much for the money as they do."

John S., FL (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"Very happy with the car."

Anonymous, WI (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"I believe that for the money the Hyundai Sonata is hard to beat. Great car for less than 20K."

Anonymous, KY (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"3000 rebate and 2600 off MSRP after making calls to 6-7 dealers to negotiate best price, before going to the dealer with the best price"

Anonymous, PA (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"Better then the other cars I looked at. You get a lot more for the money. also more rebates at the time of purchase"

Benjamin B., UT (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"I 100% believe this is the best vehicle value in it's class. May not have the most cutting-edge technology (like LED headlights, for example), but everything you do get WORKS. Many standard features of this car cost extra in competitors and I promise you'll get better value and use for what you spend. Very, very pleased."

Donald Z., OH (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"Better then the other cars I looked at. You get much more for the buck."

Benjamin B., UT (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"You get a lot for your money with the bares model I purchased. Including cross traffic alert, backup camera and Apple Carplay"

Michael B., NC (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"All the electronics of a more expensive car. Love the moving or curving lights and auto high beams"

Bob L., NJ (2018 Hyundai Sonata)

"I traded in my 2015 Sonata (19k mileage) for this one. Received a fair trade-in price and $4500 in incentives."

Thomas D., NY (2018 Hyundai Sonata)
