Gear selector or linkage, leaks, transmission computer, transmission sensor or solenoid, clutch adjustment, rough shifting, slipping transmission.
What Owners Say
"Vehicle has 1.6 turbo engine. Car hesitates from a dead stop before moves ahead. This was a major issue with Hyundai 1.6T engines/transmissions."
Anonymous, WI (2016 Hyundai Tucson ECO 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Automatic transmission did not shift properly in the various modes (Normal, Eco, Sport). Noticed vehicle hesitates when attempting to accelerate, particularly when engine was cold. Also, the car would jerk/surge. Returned to the dealer 3 separate times for this problem. First two times, dealer said software updates were performed. Third time dealer performed clutch "re-learn" procedure. Vehicle now operates normally"
Anonymous, FL (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Vibration at low speeds"
Anonymous, NJ (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Ocassional rough shifting at low speeds, reported to Hyundia tech, nothing found. I will continue to monitor. If situation becomes worse, will have to become more aggressive."
Walter C., BC (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Low speed hesitation and not smooth shifting at low speed."
Donald P., IL (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"At very low speed or idling, it almost stalled out. Dealer adjusted and is much better."
Anonymous, FL (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Terrible transmission shake when first moving. First gear is terrible the others are OK. The dealer says I'm nuts and they can't replicate the problem. Just drive this car in traffic for a few blocks and you'd want to put a for sale sign on it! Embarrassing when you have guests in the car. Very poor transmission that was put into service prematurely."
Joan J., FL (2016 Hyundai Tucson Sport 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Clutch engagement when starting from a stop produces a slight chatter. There have been 2 service bulletins/recalls on this which have been applied with minimal results. It's not these symptoms that bother me the most, it's the reports of MAJOR problems with this transmission that might occur in the future. If I had known of these problems when shopping for this car I would have chosen a different trim level that came with a true automatic transmission. It's the anxiety about future problems and the possibility of a transmission failure causing an unsafe condition (which has happened to others) that cause me to rate this vehicle as wouldn't buy again. In other respects we like this vehicle."
Anonymous, FL (2016 Hyundai Tucson Sport 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Seemed to catch at the start of acceleration. The recall fixed it."
Anonymous, NC (2016 Hyundai Tucson 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"The dual clutch transmission is largely misunderstood by consumers, and their lack of information on how best to use it. It delivers quick shifts, and saves on gas mileage, but the implementation in this vehicle is lacking in certain ways. I believe it could be improved with better electronics."
Anonymous, NY (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"CVT is horrible. Vehicle does not alwats accelerate from a stop and will hesitate when accelerating from a complete stop almost causing accidents. Very scary. CVT also jerks/coughs/rough shifting at times when accelerating from a complete stop. There have been 2 recalls to update the CVT but the issues still exist. This vehicle is a safety hazard"
Laurie K., IL (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"doesn't shift smoothly around 40 MPH"
Anonymous, WI (2016 Hyundai Tucson SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"Hesitation, Las g,"
Anonymous, AB (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"At low speed the transmission shifts up and down making for rough driving"
Donald P., IL (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"7 speed electronic transmission had inconsistent downshifting causing severe lag when accelerating and needed two software patches at dealership before shifting was at least acceptable but still not ideal"
Anonymous, IL (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"It sometimes jumps when you take off or sometimes it's like it is not in gear and goes nowhere. I have had it reprogrammed 4 times and it's great for a few weeks then starts acting up again. The last update worked better and longer. I am afraid it affects my gas mileage"
Carol K., IN (2016 Hyundai Tucson ECO 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Don't like the new dual clutch transmission. Shifting is uneven, especially from dead stop"
Myer C., FL (2016 Hyundai Tucson Sport 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"At times the vehicle does not respond ( hesitates) Immediately when the accelerator is pressed downward. It jerks when the transmission does finally engage."
Anonymous, GA (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Especially when cold. First gear to second gear transition is choppy in the dual clutch. I imagine it might stall (it never has) but it is not smooth off the line in the economy mode."
Anonymous, UT (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"The car hesitates upon acceleration. Could be dangerous, but dealer says it's normal. I don't believe it."
Anonymous, (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"The design was problematic for all cars with this model year and they've never been able to resolve the problem"
Anonymous, CA (2016 Hyundai Tucson SE 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"Duel clutch system that causes hesitation and lurch on acceleration. Current open class action suit"
Anonymous, (2016 Hyundai Tucson Sport 2.0-L 4 Cyl)"Wasstopped in an intersection, stepped on the throttle, and the car didn't move. Shifted to neutral and back into drive, finally got the car to move and drove home. Called Hyundai roadside service and they promptly towed the car the nearest Hyundai dealer, 50 miles distant. The dealer performed the recall transmission work and the problem has not happened since. In fairness, I did not have the transmission recall work done two years ago as it was inconvenient to go to the distant dealer (the Hyundai dealer had closed) and I wasn't having any problems. The slippage probably may not have occurred if I had been more diligent."
J S., CA (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Slipping does only once the vehicle start moving after being in stop mode. Dealer does not admit that this is an issue to be taken care of. Car has being doing this since brand new."
Anonymous, FL (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"It is a hesitates when you pull out.Merging with traffic.Slippage.It’s dangerous."
Geraldine D., NJ (2016 Hyundai Tucson ECO 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Slipping when taking off from. A stop"
Gandolfo G., CO (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"DCT transmission had hesitation from a stop. There was recall for this (software), and after software update (ECM and TCM) it improved, however I still experience occasionally shuddering and vibrations (in low speed). I hope Hyundai will fix it soon"
Pawel S., BC (2016 Hyundai Tucson ECO 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Had an issue where I tried to accelerate and the car didn't move from a stop"
Anonymous, CA (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"corected by recall/campaign"
Anonymous, FL (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"inconsistent shifting and slippage. had many conversations with dealership. they made transmission adjustments 2 or 3 times it is improved but still very inconsistent"
Anonymous, NV (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"strp on gas from a park area ..delay in going"
Anonymous, MA (2016 Hyundai Tucson ECO 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"It seems to be a known problem with this transmission. We received numerous messages to bring it in to get repaired but it never seemed to fix the problem."
Anonymous, (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Cannot back up on steep hill. DCT sometimes hesitates or fails to engage. Rough shifting. Class action suit pending."
Anonymous, CA (2016 Hyundai Tucson Sport 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"The DCT can decide not to shift into gear and sometimes aggressively shifts into gear and causes the car to lurch or buck."
Anonymous, WI (2016 Hyundai Tucson Sport 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"has been a problem since the beginning. Have had many recalls"
Anonymous, RI (2016 Hyundai Tucson ECO 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Since purchase"

Anonymous, UT (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Trans shifting problem surging, wound shift properly"
Craig E., WA (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"The DCT is subject to inconsistent engagement from a stop, and shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. Hyundai has issued several software updates for the TCM, which have been somewhat helpful. Shift quality is probably the most notable weakness of the car, although it is not a deal breaker."
Anonymous, NY (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Fails to provide power immediately after a stop."
James O., AB (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Was not shifting smoothly, adjusted at dealer and is working OK."
Mark B., CA (2016 Hyundai Tucson Sport 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Does not always downshift to 1st gear when slowing in traffic unless it comes to a full stop causing the vehicle to be problematic when trying to get into a faster moving stream of cars"
Michael F., MO (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Hyundai Tucsons use a 7-speed automated manual gearbox. The programming has been upgraded twice; however, there are still times when it chatters in stop and go traffic, and, most disturbing, the transmission pauses in no gear which can leave you in the middle of an intersection with a car that won't move"
Anonymous, GA (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Vehicle dies suddenly. No acceleration from stop. Frequent hesitations"

Richard H., NC (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"They have had to change something in trans for shifting delay problem"
Craig E., WA (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Hyundai has performed 3 different adjustments to transmission. It continues to hesitate and start roughly from a stop, which we consider very dangerous when pulling out in traffic. I think its a combination between this so called "dual clutch transmission" and an under powered engine whose "turbo" is slow in responding"
Stephen D., SC (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Recalls were done. We had transmission not going, not shifting but stalling, then jack rabbit movement . Trouble getting going and staying while going into traffic or driving. They adjusted computer 5 times but usually said no problem found. The SUV did drive different for. While then back to same problem. Mileage poor when SUV not working right. Never sent recall message but found out when we drove 120 miles to dealer. It took 3 months for dealer to get papers from lease correct. Love the SUV"
Anonymous, WA (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Had 3 updates for the transmission shifting characteristics"
Anonymous, CO (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"it took 2 software updates to correct transmission problem, first update corrected chug from start but added intermittent slip problem. second update corrected both problems"
Anonymous, NY (2016 Hyundai Tucson Sport 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"While starting up, the transmission would not engage. It only had the problem when we were going downhill. Dealer said it was a software problem. After updating the software it has run as expected"
Dale F., NE (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Dual clutch Transmission needs to be reprogrammed. Hesitation at low speeds"
Anonymous, TX (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Transmission was brought in for two technical bulletin updates. First instance the vehicle was stopped at an intersection and the transmission failed to engage. Multiple attempts were made to move the vehicle forward and it took ~2 min before the transmission finally responded"
Anonymous, NE (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"The transmission will disengage while driving at slow speeds. You can put your foot down and the car just sits and thinks about it."
Anonymous, (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Car when starting out mostly cold would jerk, sometimes engine would spin up without connecting with the drive shaft, eco mode especially troublesome, software update didn't solve problem, recently the transmission computer was replaced and updated software under warranty and now the car drives beautifully, old problems gone and we really like driving the car."
Anonymous, (2016 Hyundai Tucson Limited 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Transmission did not shift smoothly when starting from a stop. Dealer made some adjustments to the computer, and it is better."
Anonymous, CA (2016 Hyundai Tucson Sport 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Sometimes, on the DCT version, the clutch decides to not engage when you try to accelerate."
Anonymous, WI (2016 Hyundai Tucson Sport 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"delay in acceleration, at low speed, when turning in traffic & when pulling out at lights"
Anonymous, CA (2016 Hyundai Tucson ECO 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Hesitation on acceleration usually at traffic light when accelerating at green light, or when turning at low speed"
Anonymous, CA (2016 Hyundai Tucson ECO 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"Not sure if it's the sensor, but the automatic shifting from a full stop into first gear is almost always delayed, then the engine guns it high."
Anonymous, MA (2016 Hyundai Tucson Sport 1.6-L 4 Cyl turbo)"I think this is the right area. My main problem is the horrible hesitation and almost stopping sometimes. Over and over for 2+years of lease. Rebooting the computer solves the problem for a few months and will start again. Very hard to drive with the hesitating. I didn't hear about the problem until after I got this car. I had researched which SUV to get and I guess I got the car before this all came to light. Now the gas mileage will drop below 20mpg for awhile then get better for no reason. My driving routine is pretty much the same all the time. It is not meant to be an intown car I have concluded? It will get 32mpg for an extended hwy. trip. So go figure."
