The Cherokee is old-fashioned and trucklike. It's a good off-road vehicle, but it's noisy and uncomfortable on pavement, where SUVs spend most of their time. Cornering is clumsy, though secure. The six-cylinder engine delivers plenty of power, but it's noisy and thirsty. Still, it's a better choice than the Four. Selectable full-time four-wheel drive is optional.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

What Owners Say

"It turns on a dime! Great for city turns & parking"

Rodney O., FL (2000 Jeep Cherokee)

"Great handling. It just doesn't get stuck in the snow."

Anonymous, MI (2000 Jeep Cherokee)

"excellent 4 x 4. have used many, many times (400+) on the beaches of nc and the back woods of VA."

Ted V., VA (2000 Jeep Cherokee)

"As I said it runs on cdommand"

Robert M., OH (2000 Jeep Cherokee)

"they don't make an affordable vehicle that will do what an old style Cherokee (XJ) does. From driving 100+ miles on dirt "roads" in Death Valley to hauling a couple hundred pounds of stone work without worry about damaging the interior. All for a purchase price ( used) of well under $4000-."

M R., CA (2000 Jeep Cherokee)

"It rides smoothly on the highway, and on rough logging roads the power is ample and steady and the steering is precise."

Anonymous, MD (2000 Jeep Cherokee)

"I live in a very rural setting. All of the Cherokees I have owned have done very nicely fording a creek, getting through west central Illinois snow and up a steep hill."

K F., IL (2000 Jeep Cherokee)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Because it is 4 wheel drive it rides a little rough."

Anonymous, VA (2000 Jeep Cherokee)

"The Jeep is now almost 18 years old. The seats are still comfortable, but I would prefer if the front seats could slide back farther. It has a fairly smooth ride, but with some bouncing over bumps - it's a jeep, so it's supposed to do that. Compared to other Jeeps I've been in, this is a very quiet and smooth ride. Still noisier than other vehicles, but expected for a Jeep."

Neldon H., TX (2000 Jeep Cherokee)

"It's a Jeep! You will have noise & a stiff ride! Seating in front comfortable"

Rodney O., FL (2000 Jeep Cherokee)

"comfortable for me and able to rearrange back seat to carry more large items ie plywood, studding etc"

Ted V., VA (2000 Jeep Cherokee)

"Comfortable for 2000, moderately comfortable for 2018 standards. Noisy and somewhat stiff ride but it's a 2000 Jeep"

Steve C., WA (2000 Jeep Cherokee)

"I've owned several vehicles over my driving years. Jeep seats are by far the most comfortable seats for short and/or long trips of any vehicle I have ever owned."

Mitch V., OH (2000 Jeep Cherokee)

"Too noisy."

Anonymous, CA (2000 Jeep Cherokee)
