The Cherokee finally gives Jeep a small SUV for those who want the brand's trail cred but don't want to pay Grand Cherokee prices. And while it does offer a lot of workhorse capability for this class, it fails to get a lot of the day-to-day basics right. The list of flaws is long. Performance and fuel economy from the four-cylinder engine is pathetic.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Owner Satisfaction with:

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

“do not like the feature stop/start even though it can be turned off by a button”

ANTHONY C., NY (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

“transmission shifting non-linear and slow to downshift. some reprogramming of transmission shift points might be desirable”

GARY L., NM (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

“Handling is decent. Acceleration and power is below expectation. Sport mode helps but affects gas mileage. For the resulting milage, we would have chosen a v6 engine.”

PAUL R., NY (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

“I purchased the V-6 upgrade and most pleased with overall acceleration and handling”

JON M., TN (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

“The V-6 and 9 speed transmission are awesome, on hills you don't feel it shift down and it keeps the cruise control within 1 mph. With 9 speeds it is quick.”

RON M., NE (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

“Very nice size to drive yet I still sit high to see the road ahead.”

Anonymous, ON (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

“The V6 is powerful enough for pulling our big trailer and acceleration is outstanding. But I still get 29 mpg average in all around driving.”

JEFFREY G., WI (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

“Power good. nine speed transmission good, but never seen 9th gear kick in; not sure what it is meant for. Power and transmission action is a little out of sync at times.”

Anonymous, BC (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

“The vehicle drives like a dream in the snow. I feel very safe and that is a feeling that is worth a lot.”

KATIE S., MI (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

“Sometimes seems to almost chug a few times on acceleration after I get gas. Take off can be sluggish but I expected this with my engine type.”

Anonymous, NY (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

“Quite a few times while going around a corner and stepping on the gas it does nothing until it figures out what gear it supposed to be in. This 9 speed transmission is crap!”

ROBERT K., MO (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

“Handling initially took some time to get used to, but after several thousand miles is intuitive and forgiving. I really appreciate the 270 or so HP and loads of torque--and the nine-speed tranny shifts easily and almost without notice.”

ROSS F., CO (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

“At times the acceleration feels sluggish”

Anonymous, NY (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

“It handles great and the ride is nice but the 4 cylinder engine can feel sluggish at times.”

THOMAS E., MI (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

“2.4 engine doesn't have the acceleration I'd like in the altitude of mountains”

Anonymous, TX (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

“Seats are very comfortable and ride is excellent”

JON M., TN (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

“so far so good only had car two weeks.”

Anonymous, CT (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

“Very nice smooth ride, better than any jeep product I had ridden in before. Interior noise level is very quiet. A/C cools very well even here in Florida.”

DONALD M., FL (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

“I love the beautiful sunroof. It is a very comfortable ride.”

KATIE S., MI (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

“Front seats are exceptionally comfortable. Driver's seat controls allow for fine adjustments. Climate controls are easy to set and very visible. Navigation and radio controls are very easy to use with little or no learning required.”

Anonymous, TX (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

“Seats are a little short and narrow”

FRED S., NC (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

“Seats comfortable but power seat moves in arc so adjustments are complicated. Vehicle is noisy. Climate control is noisy. Stop-start is annoying.”

Anonymous, MI (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

“Interior noise is greater than I expected.”

DAVID C., MI (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

“Extremely comfortable seats. Exudes quality and solidness. Ride is very good, especially for an SUV.”

JEFFREY G., WI (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

“This vehicle is an excellent value for the money and has many excellent safety features.”

Anonymous, AL (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

“Jeep Cherokee is a great vehicle. Not very fuel efficient on long trips.”

Anonymous, AB (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

“Fit my needs nicely. Very good on gas. I do wish it had a larger gas tank.”

DONALD M., FL (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

“I feel I got a great value for the price. Very happy!”

GREGORY T., MI (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

“The exterior and interior of this car is beautiful. Sporty yet luxury appointed. The ride is like that of a luxury vehicle (Ive owned the BMW X5) and the interior leather seats and dashboard are impressive. I also love the way it handles and drives with no play in the steering wheel. A beauty for the $$.”

Anonymous, NY (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

“Good price compared to other SUV's”

RONALD J., IL (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

“The TrailHawk was exactly what I was looking for in terms of off-road capability (I have a 24,000 acre ranch in Wyoming), towing, and power. Of course I would have liked paying less, but using the Consumer Reports car buying tools I saved several thousand over MSRP. No regrets.”

ROSS F., CO (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

Styling

How it looks inside and out

What Owners Say

“I love the rugged yet refined look that this vehicle has”

Anonymous, ON (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

“I think the styling inside the car is really sharp. There's contrast stitching on the seats, and a lot of little conveniences, such as hidden storage under the passenger seat cushion, and cubbies for holding things. It's also nicely appointed, such as having a regular plug and several USB slots. I've had the car less than a month, so I haven't been through winter with this car, but I am excited about having a heated steering wheel!”

Anonymous, MI (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

“Sleek lines and front end design are unique.”

MICHAEL J., MN (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

“Bad front end and rear view styling. It reminds me of a Fiat Panda.”

DAVID C., MI (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

“the shape of the front of the vehicle”

ANTHONY C., NY (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

“It is a different looking vehicle”

Anonymous, FL (2016 Jeep Cherokee)

Owner-satisfaction Ratings are determined by the percentage of those who answered "definitely yes" to the question asked by the Consumer Reports Annual Auto Survey "Considering all factors (price, performance, reliability, comfort, enjoyment, etc.), would you get this car if you had to do it all over again?". If we don’t have sufficient data, a similar model might be used to form the owner-satisfaction score.
