Right from the trailhead, the redesigned Compass comes up short in the white-hot small SUV market, earning the dubious distinction as the lowest-rated model in its class. It doesn't measure up in several ways. Factor in a price that's typically higher than better competitors, and the result is that shoppers should be driven in another direction.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"I was a little thrown off by the auto shut off of the engine at first, but I've gotten used to it! The take off seems a bit slow, but I can deal with it!"

Anonymous, MI (2018 Jeep Compass)

"Have driven previous versions of the compass. They sucked. They had no acceleration, handled like bricks and didn’t really return good mileage. Jeep hit one out of the park with the redesign though. Acceleration won’t win any drag races, but you don’t buy a Jeep for that unless it’s a trackhawk Grand Cherokee. It has plenty of acceleration for what the vehicle needs and accelerates smoothly through the 9 speed tranny. Cornering is average for this style vehicle—it’s not a sports car but handles itself with poise in corners and has a nice turning radius. Mileage is outstanding. I average 27 overall but get 30-40+ with the cruise set on the highway."

"Our Jeeps have never gotten stuck in snow or mud. It goes anywhere"

Brian G., MI (2018 Jeep Compass)

"The ride is very comfortable and not noisy. The acceleration is a weak point and can feel underpowered at times. It is not a good vehicle for performing passing on the highway. There is a lag in shifting."

Joseph C., OH (2018 Jeep Compass)

"It has plenty of power."

Anonymous, VT (2018 Jeep Compass)

"Acceleration is slow... but i'm not a speedster so i don't mind. Handles quite well."

Jonathan B., MD (2018 Jeep Compass)

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"Seats are very comfortable with many support options. Noise is so low that no one realizes I’m speaking through Bluetooth. Ride is smooth Vet good acceleration. Brakes are sensitive but you get used to them after a week. My only complaint is storage and the console: USEFUL storage is non-existent. There’s no place to hold a phone except for inside the armrest (which is just a bin housing everything else because there’s no other storage); to charge your phone you have to run a cord to the dashboard though. Seems like a no-brainer to either have a convenient phone holder NEAR the charger. Cups holder options are good but are rendered useless if you want to use the armrest slide."

Susan K., NY (2018 Jeep Compass)

"Found head rests in front uncomfortable until I found out how much adjust their tilt. A much more comfortable seat and riding experience now."

Richard W., NY (2018 Jeep Compass)

"Find it interesting in the number of inquiries/interest from other friends, etc.. Biggest positive is the dark roof (black) xxxxe/cream-white bpdy."

Kenneth M., IL (2018 Jeep Compass)

"I wish the seats where full cloth verses the vinyl/coth mix that the Compass has in the lattidue model"

Anonymous, MI (2018 Jeep Compass)

"This vehicle is a really nice ride. Seats are firm and supportive but not hard. Drivers power seat can accommodate anyone. Good leg and head room. My kid loves the back seat—we test drove several vehicles and she picked this one. Climate control is great. The ride is a little noisy and the suspension a little stiff. but no more than I’d expect from a Jeep—people who complain about Jeep’s ride need to look elsewhere. There’s a reason for the stiffness. Overall a great ride that I am thoroughly enjoying."

Anonymous, MI (2018 Jeep Compass)

"This car is very quiet and smooth at low speed. The interior gets a bit louder as you speed up to highway speed."

Edward M., MI (2018 Jeep Compass)

"Smooth ride."

Anonymous, MI (2018 Jeep Compass)

"I absolutely love the low noise level and the smooth ride in our Compass. I really enjoy driving this vehicle every time I get in."

Michael L., MI (2018 Jeep Compass)

"The seat is very comfortable. The 8-way power seat is infinitely adjustable to get just the correct setting for each person. The noise level is minimal. The ride is very comfortable."

Susan S., MN (2018 Jeep Compass)

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Decent value for a limited option, there should be more led/hid lighting. Halogen lights should not be on a top model."

Joseph C., OH (2018 Jeep Compass)

"Equipped with many features for the price"

Anonymous, NY (2018 Jeep Compass)

"Great price for a vehicle that does everything we need."

Brian G., MI (2018 Jeep Compass)

"Great value, great lease price, 4 wheel drive - great for winter driving and pull my boat out of the water.."

Anonymous, MI (2018 Jeep Compass)

"I like styling, seating and handling of this vehicle."

Ray W., MI (2018 Jeep Compass)

"Trim level (i.e., number of features) is exceptional for the price."

Percentage of owners who would definitely purchase that same vehicle again. Owner-satisfaction Ratings are determined by the percentage of those who answered "definitely yes" to the question asked by the Consumer Reports Annual Auto Survey "Considering all factors (price, performance, reliability, comfort, enjoyment, etc.), would you get this car if you had to do it all over again?". If we don’t have sufficient data, a similar model might be used to form the owner-satisfaction score.
