The Wrangler has entered the modern era, with more creature comforts, updated safety gear, and an available four-door model. Its off-road performance is very impressive. While on-road ride, handling, and refinement are improved, they are still not competitive.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

What Owners Say

"Handling predictable. Can't be beat in heavy snow."

Anonymous, WI (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"I can get around rough rural roads. If I were to get stuck I can easily get myself out."

Anonymous, NM (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"It doesn't have enough torque, could use a bigger gasoline or better yet Diesel engine."

Daniel P., TX (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"Great acceleration, very tight handling, nice firm ride, goes anywhere anytime"

Anonymous, VA (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"Let's face it a Wrangler is not a great road car, but get it off road and its performance is unmatched. I own a stock Rubicon and am always surprised by what it can do off road and how it literally leaves other vehicles in the dust!"

Pugh D., AZ (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"When accelerating from a stop merging into traffic just doesn’t seem to have quick response"

Anonymous, LA (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"I think it handles fine. And you can't beat the turning radius!"

Bruce J., ME (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"We use our Jeep for exploring mountains and deserts in AZ. It is so much fun to drive, turns on a dime, and the undercarriage is amazing going over rocky terrain."

Anonymous, MN (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"Sluggish acceleration, moderate handling."

Anonymous, AP (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"Ease of handling."

Anonymous, LA (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"The problem with the wrangler is the starter. Its an automatic and I have had it checked numerous times but I still have to put in Neutral sometimes to start it."

Anonymous, VA (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"Underpowered"

Anonymous, TN (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"acceleration is less than I expected, especially when going up hills, mountains or when the a/c is functioning."

"Would prefer the newer 3.6 L engine in the newer Wranglers."

Anonymous, ON (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"Great acceleration and handling. Great in tight spaces."

Anonymous, GA (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"a bit ubderpowered"

Anonymous, NC (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

Ken P., ON (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"Despite the engine size, acceleration is slow."

Anonymous, TX (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"Engine is under powered. Have to downshift when climbing a modest hill."

Anonymous, CA (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"Absolutely terrible handling. If it hits a bump a certain way the steering wheel vibrates violently. Some call it the (Death Wobble)."

LYLE C., IL (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"being the only car you can take the top and doors off, which is a summertime and fall blast, makes up for it's performance being slug like"

JIM F., TN (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"CR rates the seats as not very comfortable. I disagree. I like them."

Bruce J., ME (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"It has a blind spot when coming up to intersections. The windshield pillar blocks the view of cars to the left, which may cause an accident. Freeway handling isn't as stable as we would like."

Anonymous, AZ (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"Leather seats are hot in summer and other times of year."

Anonymous, NY (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"Acceleration is slow. Seats very hard."

Anonymous, LA (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"Good solid suspension, seats just OK, do not uses 2dr backseat. Ride rough but competent."

Anonymous, WI (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"we traded the 2008 Wrangler in for the 2015 Wrangler because we could not get the Death Wobble fixed."

Anonymous, NH (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"Loud, rough, uncomfortable especially on longer drives."

Anonymous, AP (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"Comfortable seats handles great. Of course it has more road noise than a car and the ride is not as smooth, but it is a jeep and for that it is great."

Anonymous, GA (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"I've owned many jeeps and you can't compare their comfort to a car. This is a vehicle designed for off road. That said it's the quietest jeep and most comfortable I've ever owned."

Pugh D., AZ (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"This has multiple maintenance broblems.electrical mod;lower ball joints, uses oil, engine under powered.does ride a lot better than older modles. lots of air noise in cab.will never buy another."

Anonymous, MI (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"Seat adjustment and comfort in general... also the seat are supposed to be non-stainable which is not true."

Eddie N., IA (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"The back seat is very uncomfortable. Stiff and doesn't recline."

Douglas E., WA (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"The Jeep is even more limited on space and access to rear seats than I realized when I purchased it. Also the wind noise is excessive."

Anonymous, NM (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"My back always hurts after driving for any length of time. I hear a lot of wind noise at highway speeds."

RON S., OR (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"Seat foam has collapsed at less than 60,000 miles, so seats are very uncomfortable. Wind noise highway speeds. Various water leaks."

JEANNE G., AK (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"GREAT for negotiating in-town/city driving & parking, not good on highway travel. Lousy gas mileage!"

Anonymous, IL (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"Jeep purchased new for $24,000 with 4WD, Auto. trans., and A/C. A Fun vehicle for pleasure/adventures, ie. kayaking, camping, backroading."

Turgeon G., SC (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"Bad value. Jeep does not stand behind their product. Complete engine failure and replacement at our expense."

Jeanne G., AK (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"After 10 years this car is great- never breaks down and good for driving in mountains and snow."

Anonymous, NM (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"Has been fairly reliable. A little under powered during acceleration."

Anonymous, CA (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"Good price bought new at end of year sale and just fun to drive."

Anonymous, LA (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"Very utilitarian. No special features but very low cost to operate and exstreamly good off-road. Great visibility and inexpensive to operate."

Douglas E., WA (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"I purchased this vehicle used. It is a right hand drive for mail delivery. It was priced $3000.00 less then all the others I could find. It did however need transmission work which I knew before I bought it. A new transmission from Jeep cost me 2700 which brings me to the price of all the comparable Jeeps I look at and I got a new tranny."

RACHEL S., VA (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"Existing blue tooth has poor vocal recognition. Ride is loud, but it is a Jeep, not a luxury car. Navigation works relatively well."

Anonymous, AZ (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"GREAT for negotiating in-town/city driving & parking, not good on highway travel. Lousy gas mileage!"

Anonymous, IL (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"Does everything it's supposed to very well. One of the best at holding resale value. Has been trouble free, except for normal wear-and-tear maintenance."

PERRY A., NC (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"The vehicle build quality is abhorrent (the pain in the rear diff when new was dripping and had gaps, some of the suspension components were mis-torqued from the factory). I do quite a bit of work on the vehicle myself ( maintenance, modifications and minor repair) but it's built like a Lego kit which, combined with abundant aftermarket support, allows for an amazing degree of customization and performance build-up. In addition, the platform is absolutely amazing in terms of offroad capability."

Anonymous, AZ (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"I needed a vehicle that could handle the un-maintained and steep dirt roads that are often impassable after a bad storm where I lived at the time. I factory ordered this jeep with a rear locker and a electronic front disconnecting sway bar which allows me to go almost anywhere off road. I get 13 mpg around town and 20 on the highway."

RON S., OR (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"Engine blew up with less than 60,000 miles. Chrysler voided warranty because we had one inspection done in Canada (our nearest town, no nearby US dealership), even though all recall work was done there."

JEANNE G., AK (2008 Jeep Wrangler)

"Rubicon package best winter or off road traction control available. Even on ICE tracks great, sliding is just prevented."
