The iconic Jeep Wrangler has a loyal following, thanks to its classic design, rugged image and legendary history. With an updated powertrain, this may be the best version yet, but the Wrangler is seriously outdated in the modern world. While designed for capable offroading ability, on the road performance is uncivilized. The ride is unsettled, sometimes even snappy. Handling is very clumsy.

Overall Owner Satisfaction

Consumer Reports’ Annual Owner Satisfaction Survey can improve the chances of finding a compatible car match. How? Our survey data reveals whether, all things considered, owners would buy the same car again. The answer to that question is what determines our owner-satisfaction rating, which is a powerful piece of intel because it predicts how well a particular model will satisfy other owners.

Driving Experience

Includes acceleration and handling

What Owners Say

"This is the most fun vehicle I've owned since I sold my Miata."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"Peak power is near 6200 RPM. Not enough useful power below 3000 RPM. Passing requires downshifting 2-3 gears. Oil filter/housing design allows oil to bypass the filter."

Anonymous, MI (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"It requires constant attention or it is all over the road. Definitely not a luxury ride."

MARY R., OR (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"Great vehicle for around town parks easy and you can see very well from all angles"

PETE K., CA (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"This is my second Wrangler. this unlimited had all the off road ability of my older 2 door, but rides way better and is much quieter. On road handling limits are moderate, but very confident. the engine has excellent power, but could use a bit more torque in high range. low range ability in outstanding,In my opinion, there is nothing else on the market with the combination of attributes like the Wrangler."

CATHY S., OK (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"I have considerable aftermarket items on the vehicle, some, such as bigger tires and heavy bumpers that slow down acceleration, but it still has plenty of power. I have had considerable engine problems and Jeep finally replaced the engine."

LELAND S., UT (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"Great driving on & off road."

Bill W., NV (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"tight turning radius, which comes in extremely handy for maneuvering and parking in a city; handles beautifully in snow and slush"

Elizabeth S., MD (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"Very good acceleration with 3.6 engine. Handling is typical Jeep."

Anonymous, NC (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"I love the seating position and the handling characteristics of my Wrangler. It feels like you're in control and have a commanding view of the road. I know Consumer Reports is down on this vehicle, mostly for its road manners, but I have always loved how they ride and handle."

Aaron C., NY (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"Auto stick doesn't work all the time for manual shifting..I want more hp"

Michael S., KY (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"Great driving experience."

Steward S., CA (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"Jeep Wranglers are just a lot of joy to drive on and off road!"

Anonymous, OH (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"Excellent acceleration and good handling with doors and hard top off."

Anonymous, SC (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"As expected for a Jeep. It is all about the experience of being a Jeep owner you love the car so much you put up with a loud ride and a bumpy one. It’s part of the nastalgia of owning an off road vehicle. The bad is the seats aren’t super comfortable"

Jennifer C., MA (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"Tepid acceleration; 2012 engine update was an improvement but transmission programming dampens the enthusiasm."

Anonymous, LA (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"I didn’t think that a Jeep had that much 'get up & go'. But to kick it into passing gear it will move out. The Jeep handles very well & corners well."

Cameron S., GA (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"This mean machine can power through any situation. There is nowhere it can’t go. I have ultimate confidence that my Wrangler can go over, around, or through any obstacle I encounter on or off the road."

Anonymous, FL (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"Very easy to maneuver with good acceleration."

Anonymous, KS (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"Handling is great, very responsive and solid feedback."

James S., PA (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"Tight turning radius. Powerful engine"

Ron N., NY (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"Everything is good except cabin wind noise during driving."

Bill W., NV (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

Comfort

Includes seats, climate control, noise, and ride

What Owners Say

"We are tall people and we were amazed as to the actual comfort and ride of this Jeep. We can't believe it's a Jeep - it definitely isn't the Jeep product our dad's drove"

DAVE O., CO (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"I'm told the seats were redone for 2013. I love the upright seating position, but the seats definitely need some lumbar support, and a little more side bolstering would be nice."

AARON C., NY (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"The ride on the street is not too good. Very bumpy and so so street handling. However, you have to remember this is a terrific off road vehicle which I do use in that capacity at times. I love the 6 speed manual in terms of clutch engagement and positive shifting. One of the best I've ever had and I've had a lot of stick shifts in my life."

Anonymous, CO (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"The front bucket seats (adjustable) are the most comfortable of any vehicle I have owned."

ROBERT J., CA (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"Consumer Reports always downgrades the Wrangler due to its stiff and bumpy ride, wind noise, etc. That's unfair! I chose the Wrangler for its sportiness and off-road capabilities, I don't expect it (nor should other buyers) to ride like a Lexus."

Anonymous, OK (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"Seats could be more comfortable with more adjustments, back seats in particular are uncomfortable in the 4 door model we purchased - they're too shallow. Rides like a truck, little bit noisy."

Anonymous, ID (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"just about what I expected"

CHRISTOPHER V., DE (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"Leather seat on drivers side is very cheaply made - has torn (cracked) in several spots not repairable will need to be replaced"

JOHN B., IN (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"Very comfortable seats, wonderful off road ability."

STEWARD S., CA (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"I am usually a passenger in this vehicle and it is not as smooth of a ride as the vehicle I normally drive. You feel every bump. But from a drivers perspective it handles tight turns very well and is fun to drive."

TARA Y., CO (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"Ride and handling is a little rough"

DAREN C., WA (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"Front drivers seat squeaks really bad. Dealership says to lubricate the seat to get rid of the squeaking. I find it horrendous that in any vehicle made in the last 10 years has seats squeak so bad they would drive me nuts. The back seat is very uncomfortable. My kids dread sitting in it."

Anonymous, NY (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"Very rough ride on poor roads. Unstable at freeway speeds wandering steering. Engine make rattling noises under acceleration."

Anonymous, CA (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"You don't own a Jeep for comfort or a smooth ride."

Anonymous, NC (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"It’s a Wrangler. It’s loud and uncomfortable, but that’s the trade off when you buy a Wrangler. I would pick my other vehicle for a road trip, but the Jeep for a ride through the mountains in the fall or a drive to the beach in the summertime."

Robert H., NE (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"it has a very good ride for a Jeep. Seats are very comfortable"

M C., MI (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"The seats are really uncomfortable for anything but short rides. Any ride longer then 20 minutes hurts my hips. Plus, the seats are extremely noisy like I was driving something from the 60's. May be not, my Aunt's Dodge Dart from the 60's made less noise in the seats then my wrangler. The dealership refused to repair or replace the seats several times while it was under warranty. They just said I needed to lubricate the springs on the seats. I have owned cars built in the 60's to today and never has a mechanic told me to lubricate a seat spring until I owned this wrangler."

Anonymous, OH (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"Amazing vehicle. Confident driving in all weather conditions."

James S., PA (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"Rides like a Jeep. Kind of noisy, jerky, bumpy, and creaky, but it’s all part of the Jeep experience! We love it!"

Miranda P., CO (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"The headrest is at an annoying angle. It needs to be straight up, but it is at an angle that is uncomfortable."

Anonymous, MD (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

Value

Did you get what you wanted relative to the price you paid?

What Owners Say

"One of the best resale values around."

STEWARD S., CA (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"I drive a lot of miles - I'm now at 102,000, and this car has had exactly 1 issue I've needed to take it to the mechanic for - it's been fantastic value for the cost and so reliable."

Anonymous, CT (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"Performs as expected. Ok on highway and can go off-road"

Anonymous, CA (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"Outstanding value."

Steward S., CA (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"I cannot say enough about my Jeep. I got a real bargain when I brought it. I’m a Boy Scout District Commissioner (volunteer) w/76 units scattered over 3 counties in north Georgia. For 2017, I put approximately 11,000 miles on the Jeep in all types of terrain w/o a single problem. Only expenses for the four years: gas, 1 set of tires, water pump and normal servicing. On a scale of 1 - 10, I give it a 10."

Cameron S., GA (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"The Jeep Wrangler works well in all types of weather and all types of roads. It holds its value very well. Best vehicle for the price that I have ever purchased."

Jim W., NH (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"Off road ability, tight turning radius, flat towable behind RV"

Ron N., NY (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"There were no repairs in the last year, and it cost me about $75 to change the oil myself twice."

Anonymous, UT (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"Oil pump was replaced twice.the second time due to metal flakes in n the oil, despite changing the oil every 5000 miles with Mobil1."

Anonymous, MI (2012 Jeep Wrangler)

"A Jeep is a Jeep - holds it's value and have never had a major mechanical issue with it."

Frank A., SC (2012 Jeep Wrangler)
